really lame and greedy. Wanted one too. Not anymore.
same here. No way I'll pay $800 for a device that's essentially the same as the Viewsonic Gtab w/ a better OS (and a few other bells and whistles - NOT $400 worth) for DOUBLE the price. Stupid Stupid move on Motorola's part. $500 makes sense, $800 is pure stupidity. I'll keep my fingers crossed for another device that fits the $500 mark, or just wait it out w/ my newly purchased $399 Galaxy Tab for the prices to come down.
Well, this is not wifi-only device.
I don't think you can expect NON wifi-only device for $500 with this kind of spec.
If you are looking for wifi-only device (like the iPad $500 price point), then this is not for you. You need to wait ... until there is that wifi-only version released.

How funny is that. Were in a recession, yet you want to charge 800 for a tablet that's wifi locked and you MUST pay at least one month of Verizons data plan just to unlock the wifi. I call bull****. Lost alot of respect from me.

So your saying the cellular portion of these devices costs and/or is worth the extra $300 price tag? I would speculate the additional technology cost would be happily subsidized by any cellular company getting a data plan rate from the consumer and SHOULD keep this device around $500. The profits from the data plans that the cellular companies are getting from $20+ a month?? come on...seriously???
Let's call a spade a spade, Motorola believes that people will pay a premium for the 'FIRST' Android 3.0 device AND wants to ride the 'ipad' wave w/ the cellular providers pushing their wares + data plans. This $800 price tag wont last long. Apple sells the 'Apple' brand (hey look I bought an 'APPLE'), Motorola sells devices (no one is running around going 'hey look I bought a 'Motorola' - who cares???)
This thing will drop in price significantly over the next 6 months as they 1) get past the few people that are willing to throw money away to be 'latest/greatest' at all costs and 2) start to realize that significant sales will only come when the price is reasonable and one is purchasing them at this premium.
iPad prices are sure to drop as the iPad2 is released...WHY would people pay $800 for an 'Android' when they will *likely* be able to purchase the ipad 1 for $400-$600??? you have to compete and Motorola isn't unfortantely able to compete on brand, so it needs to compete for price + technology.
Let's not forget these are 'consumer' devices not computers, sure you can go 'spec for spec' w/ the nerds, but the masses don't really care about all that stuff....and the masses is who your selling your device to, to get 10+million devices in sales...
When the price leaked several weeks ago, any hope I had of getting a Xoom was gone. Even if it had not been shot down then, the new news that the price will be $800 and there will be a CHARGE to activate wifi .... would have done me in.
I made the decision to get the Nook Color. A week later someone had ported a working version/img of HC to the NC from the sdk release. The dang $800 Xoom can showcase it's stuff in a few weeks and I'm happy for people that will get it as I know it will be beautiful. The HC UI is gorgeous, beyond my expectations. I'll sit here happily with my $250 NC reader/table running HC. So far everything my friend with an iPad can do, I can do on my NC. It's 100%stable when running the rooted Eclair or Froyo, and about 80+% (and improving with each release) stable and useable running HC.
I guess Motorola thinks people are going to replace their laptops with a 10 inch tablet? Maybe. imo - doubtful. For $800 I'd sooner replace my laptop than get the Xoom.
Wow... that whole thing read like my thought process in the first few minutes after that Best Buy ad came out, including my decision to hold off buying and see what T-Mobile has in store.

Exactly. People aren't exactly looking to just throw $800+ out the window on something they don't need. A $500 Wifi iPad is a MUCH better purchase until Honeycomb/the Xoom become established in the market.
Bull****. No such thing as locking Wifi in Android. So stop the lies.
Its just Verizon wanting to push their service.

The only thing that expensive tablets will bring is more carrier controlled bull****. This subsidized pricing model lets prices get ridiculously inflated and only screws us.

Well, I don't know the price for that cellular components. But take a look on device that has similar specs (hardware wise) and has cellular capability.
Probably, if you shrink the Xoom display to around 4" like your Android phone, you will get that for $500.

Really? You use yet another phone as a comparison?
What part of "size is a factor " didn't you understand?
You have a screen that is almost three times the size.
Way more RAM
And a much larger battery.
And these are simply the more obvious differences.
A 32gb Class 6 sd card alone runs about $100
The screens aren't cheap either. My guess is that they are at least $200.
And we haven't even talked about development costs, and the other parts.

Let's not act like the article doesn't have some good points though. Let's take a look at Apple, and the iPad. You can buy a 16, 32 and 64 gig iPad. You can only buy a 32 gig Xoom. Personally, I do not need a 32 gig device, so I cannot justify throwing out $800 for something I'm not going to fully use.
THAT is where Moto made their mistake if you ask me. Only coming to the table with one option. Now, we've heard rumors of a WiFi ony model waiting in the wings, so maybe they do have an entry level 16 gig Xoom waiting in the wings. BUT, Moto would be much better served releasing it from the get go than holding it back.
You can add SD card with Xoom

I dont understand posts that say, If you dont wanna pay the premium, go get an iPad! pfffft~!..
Most of us here are fans of android, and want to see it succeed... Over the iPad and iOS devices..
What I'm worried is about the platform itself getting a bad image.. the iPad has a huge lead in user base already.. and apps already get months of early release on the iPad, starting android development only after the iOS version launches.. a device like this will only widen the gap..
Remember Sony and the PS3? "We want our users to work harder and save up for a PS3"... remember what happened? People bought 360's and Wii's...
Sigh.. and I own a ps3.. and I want a Xoom.. I'm just worried about the platform itself.. and since the Xoom was revealed to most of the general public in a high profile Superbowl ad, people will get this impression of the platform as expensive.. and not worth a premium over the iPad.. which is pretty too.. but cheaper.. and made by Apple.. which we all know is wrong.. but the general consumer doesnt..
I was talking w/ some of the people at my school, and people still dont realize that Android has anything to do with Google.. which i think is a mistake also.. people think android is a DROID device.. made by verizon.. some people dont realize that droid is even on other networks.. People trust Apple.. People trust Google.. but people dont know that Android = Google.. this I think is a problem..
And developers and other users follow where the general public user goes.. this is what I think the biggest problem is.

No, your eyes do not deceive you. What you see here supposedly is a display at a Sam's Club trainer store (a faux store where they show real stores how it's done) with a Wifi-only Motorola Xoom. At least, that's what the display says. No telling when it might actually be coming, and considering the price tag shows it running Android 2.0 "Homeycomb" -- there's a Photoshop contest waiting to happen -- well, we'll just have to see, won't we.
As for the $539 price? We'd still like to see a sub-$500 listing, but it's certainly a little more in the ballpark.

Lol that would be awesome. Makes sense though. Whenever you buy an Apple product you gotta factor in the cost of the proprietary peripherals.
Since it would be $539 for the 32GB version, I'd say it's pretty good. I mean, certainly, even the average consumer can look at $499 for the 16GB iPad 2, $599 for the 32GB iPad 2, and $539 for the 32GB Xoom, and tell that the Xoom is the better deal, right?
Right? Come on, help restore my faith in the intelligence of the general population.

Yes, that is very true, ONLY if the consumer cares about storage. Many iPad users (no knock on them, but 95% are just average consumers) don't look at storage, JUST price. And because of that many will choose iPad at $499.
Now $539 is just a stone's throw away from $499 so they're effectively the same price, and you can justify the difference even not looking at storage just by using the device or liking what it offers.

Yes, and I would agree that a $100 difference would make a someone think twice even about twice the storage, but not $40. Throw in the fact that storage can be expanded on the Xoom (I'm sure SD card support will be enabled by then), and assuming that Motorola actively markets that fact, then I think only the most ignorant person would choose the iPad 2 based at all on price.
Other factors, maybe and certainly in many cases. But not price.
I don't see "32GB" in any of the photos, I only see Android 2.0 Homeycomb. How did you know that's $539 is for the 32GB model?

You are half right, most people will see $4xx and $5xx unless they are a bit tech savvy to check the specs or do a double take on the prices vs features. This $4.99 vs $5.00 marketing stratagy has been nightmare for your average consumer for at least 20 years. It is all in what people think they see and to most people the $40 difference (due to the overlap in hundreds) will appear at first glance to be a $100 difference.

It's an assumption based on the fact that the only versions that Motorola has discussed so far are the 32GB wifi-only version and the 32GB 3G/4G version. That, and Sam's Club will never sell for more than the MSRP, and I can't imagine Motorola would set an MSRP for a 16GB version, if it exists, at more than the iPad 2 since everything else is pretty much the same.
So, if Sam's Club is selling it for $539, then I'm assuming it's a 32GB version that has an MSRP of $599. That just fits Sam's Club pricing, pretty much.

I think there's a bit of confusion here... As I understand it, this is a shot from a central "showcase" location that Sam's Club uses to stage products that are coming at some point in the future. So, the wifi-only version hasn't been released yet, and I'm guessing it won't be until April. My understanding (can't find the link) is that Verizon has a 60-day exclusive on the Xoom.

Yes this is correct. No actual Sam's Club locations are actually advertising this in stores and have stock.
Not sure about the Verizon exclusivity lasting 60 days. I don't think we'll be waiting a full 60 days (aka March 24th) to see the WiFi only model. I'm pretty sure Verizon did pull some kinda deal and Motorola played ball with them, but 60 days is just killing them if they wait that long. I don't think they can afford to wait that long and I'd be surprised if these kinda promotional materials would be coming out 50+ days early. We see these things a couple weeks before it comes out.
Whether Verizon is holding them back or not, we know the WiFi version (and GSM version) both exist and there is no manufacturing or physical reason why they wouldn't (swap radios, gg), and as soon as they can sell these things, they will. I just wish Motorola would grow a pair and not bend over for Verizon, or any other carrier for that matter.
Let me know guys. Thanks!

There are things I love/hate about both the iPhone and Atrix, so I'm seriously caught in the middle. Any thoughts about why I shouldn't ditch the Atrix yet? You said wait, but I'm not sure "what" you wanted me to wait for
Some are selling on ebay for around $350.
not spending 500 bucks...
I'm in with the "cheaper dock" thing
I want the dock, I find the idea to be genial, but I do not see why I should pay $500 for essentially a screen, a keyboard and a battery.
So, anyone know of a cheaper source (or when - if - prices eventually go down), let me know. I'll keep subscribed to this thread
As I mentioned. Best Buy - $399.00 ($100 off)
You can order it from Motorola for around 360; granted I took my Atrix back before I got a chance to use it.
I love the idea but a lot of reviews and people with first hand experience said it was a little laggy.
If it was 200 bucks I'd grab one today though.

Not anymore, you can't. It is not available anymore in Moto's online store. Before they took the accessory down, they bumped up the price again to US$499.
Not sure if I even want to spend 400 bucks on it (bestbuy). I personally think that is still too much for this piece of hardware.

Only applies for people on an AT&T plan. Where this does not apply, this is the same price as letstalk.com.
Thanks for pointing it out though, this is another place to order. And a good deal for AT&T customers
It seems the Lapdock is now on sale in Canada for a mere CAD 330 (as opposed to US$ 399 being the cheapest in US). Unfortunately, it seems futureshop does not ship internationally, so it seems there is no way for me to order it from there.
This, however, brings up an interesting pricing question: is Moto test-driving a different price in Canada, just to see how it sells? Does that mean the US price is going to drop, or does it mean the Canadian price is going to go up later on?
More importantly: how do I get this shipped internationally from Canada? Any ideas?

So here is the link with the details of the trade in offer. Being on AT&T, the only option is an Atrix HD. The problem is, that came out with a price point of $50. Amazon and Best Buy now have it listed for free with a contract renewal. So once again, we just got another slap in the face.
It is tempting to get a free Atrix HD and slap the Razor Maxx battery in it though...saw that in their forum. I also saw in their forum that they have finally rooted it but are still working on the bootloader...get that done and it is tempting.

Read more closely, you get a $100 Motorola Visa Prepaid Card for using the trade-in program. So you can either get it from Amazon for free or get it from AT&T for $99 and use the $100 rebate. Either way you end up even as far as money spent. That being said, AT&T won't keep the Atrix HD at $99 forever, so you can probably make a little money on that offer if you aren't dying to do it today.

I'm not sure how future-proof it will be, but then again, it looks like Motorola is turning these things into disposable devices, despite the 2 - 3 year contracts.

Don't forget that this new phone will probably come with its bootloader locked tighter than San Quentin during a riot. But I'm sure we can count on Motorola to keep the OS current.

What a bunch of worthless clowns, they're merely guaranteeing 100$ from Clover Wireless, a company that buys used phones and reconditions them for resale. You can send your phone to them at any time for trade in value.
Or, you could sell it on Craigslist.
In addition you don't get the phone unless the phone is active on your account at the time of purchase of the new phone.

The business concept for mobile phones is to make people think they are disposable products. Device makers working with carriers to ensure a mutual benefit; make a device with a 1-2 year life span, claim a price 10 times what it cost to make, sell it for double what it cost to make ($50-$200) with a minimum 2 year contract then just before the contracts start giving out (18 months) stop issuing updates to persuade people they need to trade in their old device which is still viable. Set up a trade-in program, refurbish for $0-$20 a device, turn around and sell it used for another $50-$100.
Pretty sweet deal if you ask me considering both the device makers and the carriers all win big off of consumers.
As for the actual cost of a device, take the iPhone 5 for an example. 64gb device costs $399 for a 2 year contract and the 32gb version costs $299 with the same contract? Wow...that better be by far the fastest, most incredibly efficient 32gb of $100 memory considering I paid $90 for an OCZ Agility 3 64gb drive nearly a year ago. The whole process is nothing more than gouging the consumer and borderline price fixing/oligopoly both of which the Telcom industry has not only been notorious for but so notorious that the Bell System/ATT antri trust agreement with the Feds that occurred back in the early 80's only recently ended.

LOL. But did they say when? Actually, there was some "development device" they were marketing, but the only thing I saw that made it a development device was an unlockable bootloader and lack of warranty and nothing on a hardware level access (serial/JTAG/ICSP) or documentation level.

My dad has an iPhone 3GS. Old device.. and he's running iOS 6!!!!
I can't believe Motorola left us out in the cold again. I had a Motorola Cliq. I should have learned my lesson, but noooo... I had to go back to them.
Meanwhile, my other phone (a Galaxy Note) receives so many updates a month I actually have to choose which ones I want to apply.
Motorola: NEVER AGAIN.

Hey man I'm not saying I believed it or anything.
Actually...there's not many phones with 2GB of ram. IMO...Atrix HD is a nice phone with nice performance.

Have not read all of the details but how about do the trade in for Atrix HD with ATT and get the $100 from Moto. Before 30 days is up, you can go back to att and trade the HD in for SGIII or other phone. Will Moto know any different? Just saying.

We have a winner
So what started off as a 500$ unlocked (16gb) to 400$ and now to 300$ all in 5 months. [August Release Date]
What sort of resell value are we looking at before the Moto X2 comes out around august?? Im only curious because I would like to purchase this moto x unlocked phone now for 300 and sell around July/August.
At this rate, its looking like ~100$-125$? What do you guys think?
You should not consider a smartphone as an investment. It depend on how much more discount Google will give it. If the price stay the same, I would say if you keep it mint, my guess is $240.
You couldn't even buy a mint (international) Galaxy S2 for $125 and its 3 years old.

Probably around $250 if you keep it in good condition.

I just sold my black Verizon branded x on swappa for $290. That right there bad for the $299 unlocked motomaker I just ordered.

I am not looking at this as an investment. I am simply need a temporary to use a 4G/LTE compatible phone because I am using ATT Iphone4s on Tmobile network, which is very spotty due to different bands (And lack of). I will probably look into a top tier phone like S5 or Iphone6 come July. I am just looking to buy one motox new (take care of it) then sell it and have it hopefully cost me 20-30$ a month on average.
Im happy everyones so optimistic that till still be near the 200$ range considering its only $300-330 now. Whats the best way to sell? Craigslist, ebay or Swappa? Thanks guys!

Craiglist only if you carry a Remington 12 gauge for protection, otherwise Swappa is hassle free. You might be able to get a few dollars more from eBay, but they have lots of fees so in the end it's not worth it.
I think you should look to buy a phone as a keeper than just temp use. People have said Moto X feel faster than their Note 3 due to better software optimization. Seems like a waste if you're buying it just to use LTE temporarily.

Why not a moto g?
Also IIRC ebay + paypal fees run about 13% on a phone I think - about $40 on a $300 sale? Swappa is $10 + paypal fees (3%) - about $19.

It actually started out at $600 for those who just can't wait when a new phone is released. :/ I've sold phones on eBay and Craigslist. As mentioned, you might get a little more from eBay but Craigslist is usually faster. Regarding the shotgun comment, always be sure to meet in a public place and don't give your description until you arrive. Most people are decent and just looking for the item you're selling.

It's true though that the X has lost more value from release date in 6 months than nearly any other flagship I've ever seen. Yes that's because google and Motorola themselves have dropped the price. But even so, resell value for those who bought on release date has dropped well over 50% in 6 months. That's remarkable. Takes an iPhone about 2 years to lose that much value. Samsung and htc flagships don't drop that fast either, by a long shot.
I'm thinking the major discounts are going to level off...I can't really see Moto selling this phone for less than $300. It's possible it might eventually hit $300 off contract as the standard price, but if you keep your phone in good condition, I would think you would be able to net $200 for it in the summer (so $220-230ish before fees/shipping). That's what I'm hoping at least...
I've never bothered selling an old phone....I gift them to family and friends that have even older phones.
But, based on current prices of the Moto x, I'd say we won't be getting too much selling them used later. I've seen used nexus 4's for almost the same as used Moto x's.....
Guess we'll see later.

After I got the Moto X, I sold my previous phone (the HTC Rezound) on eBay for $80 (although I included 2 spare batteries, and had it S-OFF with an unlocked bootloader).
That phone was in rough shape, and heavily used. I think $100 will be the absolute minimum the Moto X would go for. A nice, thin 4G phone with great battery life? You won't get $250 in July, but it'll still hold up pretty well.
One problem I see is with bizarro color combinations, and the effect that will have on resale value.

Never thought of that. LOL. Moto makers will be a tough sell. They'd have to like the color combination to even consider it. Personally if I saw a wood back phone in the classifieds, I'd be hitting the back button before I read a thing. No matter the price. Lol

Get a nexus 5. I was one of the first to buy. I just sold it on eBay for 399.95. It cost me about 50 bucks for a few months which basically was tax and shipping. Chances are you'll like it enough to keep it.

Definitely not true. Prior to the price drops, 16GB Moto X's could be found on swappa for roughly 450 dollars. Roughly about the same price on ebay, but I was able to snag a very lucky BIN for $400 for a 16gb back in November.
If you look at the most recent sold listings on swappa, most of them are still in the $350 range, which is plenty good considering they had their huge fire sale for $350 a month ago AND the $300 sale the other day.
Phones that are usually subsidized by the carriers and that are actually POPULAR, like the HTC One or S4, usually sell for much less at this point in time. Look on swappa's listings of sold S4s, they're all low 300s. Granted the phone has been out longer, but that's nearly a 250-300 drop in value. The X's used price hasn't changed very much in comparison, given that Moto dropped the price over 150 dollars over the past couple months.
That my friend is supply and demand. There isn't an abundance of used x's like every other phone yet. I don't even think Motorola sold that many new lol. Up until a few days ago second hand was the only way to get them overseas. Now that's not the case so I still say the prices will drop, but you're still better buying and selling at full price than subsidizing with Verizon or at&t. Especially if you switch every few months.
For the op however, I reiterate... Nexus 5
