Password-protected notes? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

Hi,
all I want is to write down some stuff (like bank data, etc.) that is protected by a password. Even on my old K750i I could write protected memos... is that also possible on Windows Mobile?
Thanks in advance!

Nobody? Is this really not possible?

I use slimPassword as it's the only one I have found that is free and can be used with my laptop (by syncing the password database file)

Ahh, thanks. That's a good start. I was hoping for something to take longer notes with (like password-protected Word files), as I plan to write my wedding vows on my TP2.

well just download something you like - there's plenty of free one's out there, and most probably even more paid ones too!

You could also use something like FreeOTFE4PDA which will 'mount' a password protected area for you to save files to, making it really easy to protect office files.

I'll take a look at them, but so far they all seem to be intended for storing short stuff like PINs, etc.

I use secure notes 1.2 it's freeware.

eWallet vs CodeWallet Pro

Thinking of getting one of these, any one here have experience of these two apps and any recommendations ?
Thanks.
Hello,
Actually I have pretty much experience with CodeWallet, eWallet and FlexWallet. I've been using eWallet for many years and recently switched to CodeWallet. There is a serious security issue with eWallet. It appears the Category names are in plain text unencrypted format !! Altought the actual cards are encrypted, I wouldn't be so happy for a thief to be able to see what I am hiding inside (i.e. Bank Accounts etc..) Sometimes the category name itself is something you would want to protect. That's why I switched over to CodeWallet even though CodeWallet provides only 128 bit encrptiong while eWallet provides 256 bit, though again with no category encryption.
MOBILER
Thanks for pointing that out.
I agree with you , eWallet is now off my list.
The other option I am looking at is instead getting Sentry 2020 which creates an encrypted mount. Then just have my sensitive info in Excel spreadsheets on that mount encrypted. Perhaps the encrypted mount can be my external storage card.
http://www.softwinter.com/sentry_ce.html
http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/wince/sentry/index.htm
Any opinions on this ?
Gut feeling , CodeWallet seems best all rounder so far.
hey linuxgeek
from my own personal experience, I've used many encryption programs and found all to have flaws except for this one: CryptoStroage which I eventually purchased.
It's key benefits is unlimited size - most other programs have limits of a few Mbs. with this program I can mount a few houndred MB volume on my SD Card where I put all my scanned documents in and view them with acrobat reader.
Another key benefit it has a desktop version so you could use the same volume to mount on your desktop pc. very neat, instead of going to the ppc each time. It is the most fast I've tested and is super easy to use. It looks like another SD card storage.
I think I've tested Sentry 2020 and found it was inconvenient for me.. but i'm not sure.. I may have not tested the recent version so I don't know. but I see Sentry costs $50 and Cryptostorage costs $20.
Let me know if there's something else i can help you with.
Great tip thanks for that.
Cryptostorage looks fab , definately going to get it.
Do you think its worth getting CodeWallet also or shall I just get Cryptostorage and like metioned earlier keep all my info in excel/word files inside the safe ?
Thanks for all your input.
Looking at Cryptostorage website it doesn't mention it works with Windows Mobile 5 .
Are you or any one using on a Universal with WM5 ?

Hey,
Yes it works on my Universal just fine. I found it to be the most convenient program among the encryption programs.
I do suggest getting Codewallet as well. It is not convenient to mount a volume each time, then fire up excel if only to check for a password. I personally have all my passwords, maybe a hundred stored with Codewallet and I also enjoy the Desktop version, which is easier to use when working on the desktop PC. I use my wallet file on the Synced My Document folder and then the desktop version and the PDA version are synced with the latest wallet file each time.
Thanks for reply.
I am moving towards getting eWallet and using cryptic category names because of its 256bit encryption.
I am definately going to get Cryptostorage too now that u confirm it is fine under Universal.
Thanks for all your input mate.
Anyone used cryptocard? I've been thinking of changing from myCodes Lite to this. myCodes seems OK but is a little slow.
Anyone ever wondered, how comes that CodeWallet can sync your Desktop/Mobile wallet without any password entered?
I guess they encrypt the data by record and keep a timestamp unencrypted. But this way if you often use the same login name and have many similar forms (Username, Login, URL), an attacker could get the password somehow, I think, since there is always the same beginning of the records.
It's something like security vs. sync-without-password-prompt. Where as 128bit RC4 isn't "strong" encryption nowadays anyways. I'm a bit concerned about the *real* security of this app...
Cheers,
-mARKUS
CodeWallet insecure
CodeWallet now is a NO GO for me. Found some patched EXE-file of its Desktop-version, where you can enter *any* 3-digit password to open your file. This is not security, this is INsecurity par excellence.

Killer app for Tytn/Hermes and Prophet!

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned on the board yet but I found a program called "Worldcard Mobile" yesterday and am, very, very impressed.
It 's a program used to automatically enter business card data into contacts using the Tytn's built in camera. The app automates the shooting of pics of business cards, the subsequent OCR recognition and the saving of data as a contact card (see below) in a quick and easy workflow.
The program works unbelievably well. Very cool, really.
One note: Although the web site doesn't explicitly mention it, the "trial" version is not fully functional, you can not save the data you generate to contacts or anywhere else.
Nevertheless, IMHO it's worthwhile to install just to see it work.
A few important points:
1. put your camery into macro mode by using the little switch next to the lens before snapping
2. for best results I've found that using the Tytn's flash while shooting results in near perfect pics/recognition.
3. I'm not sure if this is another "trial" limitation (since penpower don't say what they are), but the address area of the business card is not recoginised by default, you must us the "browse" button and put a box arround the area to recognise it (see manual).
4. The install requires about 10MB but works fine installed on my memory card.
Although, I ordered a license from the company's yahoo shop (US$24) yesterday and received a order confirmation, there is no notice of how/when I will receive the Product ID necessary to enable the fully version. I hope to get it when they get back into the office on Monday ???!!
The app download and user manual (worthwhile) can be found here:
http://www.penpower.net/enversion/product/wc_mobile.html
Have fun
M.
This is perfect! I'm going to try this out for sure!
For all those people I meet who still hand me their cards instead of bluethoothing me their contact info. How old fashioned ;-)
In singapore at least, this is bundled with 838pro......

Does not work very well with my TyTN. Among other things, it seems almost incapable of recognizing text in italics. I tried to scan a number of business cards and it only recognized regular typeface text.

WorldCard Mobile: Issues with German Business Cards
At least for German business cards, WorldCard Mobile only works to a limited extend:
While the OCR recognition is quite good, it usually doesn´t associate text with the right contents. I tried it with about 20 business cards. It always recognized items like WWW-Address, EMail., Phone numbers etc.. correctly. However, it did not find address and company names.
I presume the reason is that the english version doesn´t understand how to find german style postal codes, street names etc...
Thus, the program is not sufficient for me, because I need to complete the contact data manually. In this case, I type in the whole information on my PC rather than scanning it partially and adding the address manually on my Tytn / T-Mobil Vario II.
anyone have trial version cab file? their ftp is down

{REQ}Awesome application Request_Using a Barcode and automatic Torrent Download...

Imagine you are standing in a store looking at DVDs. You photograph a barcode with your phone and press a couple of buttons. By the time you make it home, the movie is waiting for you in your torrent client.
This is the link for the app which is available on Android. I wonder if anyone could come up with something like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h05KrEjHW6g
and VERY legal indeed...
While it is a clever idea, that kind of talk really isn't allowed here.. I think this thread will be closed!
thats amazing.. wonder how he is getting away with that!
not that i encourage illegal behavior or download anything illegaly, but i would love to see someone get something like that working for winmo too (not that i would use it)!
Illegal downloads
Its not like im encouraging illegal movie downloads. Just because a shop is providing bullets and guns doesnt mean that they are encouraging shooting and killing...
I think this would be a wonderful app and could have many uses other than illegal movie downloads so take a chill pill...
Yes, the implications are incredible. I'm sure there are *many* other uses other than illegal movie downloads, I just can't think of any right now.
..
Oh wait, got one! Music download?!
Hardly saying I'm against it, but do you really think this is the place for you to request an app which would make you a trigger-happy barcode reader?
other possible use
instead of having it take you to a torrent of the movie you can you use it log you dvds or cds to make a list of all your dvds or possibly use it with microsofts netflix app to add the scanned dvd to you rental list
Think outside the box lill fella there could be a lot more uses than just piracy... I saw the video on youtube and was very impressed so lighten up and go BUY a dvd or something if it makes u happy...
I already downloaded a torrent client on my mobile and am able to download content from many sites... Its called winmobile torrent if anyone is interested.
Please posts messages regarding development or alternatives to this rather that sarcy comments from now on.
p.s.
Dashraider that is an excellent idea...

Try Koushik Dutta's Windows Mobile Bar Code Manager and API.
Another possible use:
It scans the barcode, then identifies the product and checks online for different prices. So you can find the lowest price or whatever.

Just an FYI there is already a WM program being developed that does this called Barcorama. It's a little crude in the fact that it doesn't actually "read" the barcode, it just searches a predefined string using the barcode numbers that you photograph, and opens a browser page with the prices.
You can edit the search string as well, I think it defaults to a Google Shop search, but you can make it search Amazon/Whatever fairly easily.
To take this a step further, basically what I imagine the general workings of this application would do would be something of the following.
Using pretty much the same foundation as barcorama you would take a pic of the barcode, but instead of displaying the pricing page it would instead parse the data for a title of a movie/artist/etc. This operation would likely be hidden to conserve resources. Beyond this you could take the data that you got from searching the UPC and then plug that into a torrent search site such as isohunt, and have it grab whichever torrent has the closest match or best seeds.
The problems would be that while you could do all the steps on the PPC, I'm not exactly sure how you would get the .torrent opened on your PC without some sort of remote feature/LogMeIn etc. which are probably difficult to integrate into the application.
An additional problem would be that the application would have to judge which torrent from the tracker is "best" to download which would probably have to be handled by some combo of which torrent has the most seeds and which most precisely matches the data it acquired from the barcode.
I'd imagine that this project can be done without too much trouble, but it will probably take awhile to work out the bugs/fine tune the search/etc.
-Edit: After rereading this I came up with an idea for a workaround to get the file to the PC. It's only an idea like I said and would require additional development, but I'm just planting the seed for the more creative minds to bloom.
Basically the steps would be the same as above, but when you reached the point where the .torrent has been found, have the program save the .torrent to a temporary directory, attach it to an email document, and email it to an address you would input. You would probably have to run an app always on the PC that would watch your email, and open any .torrents that came in, I'm not sure how difficult that would be.
I think something like this is the easiest way to do this, but anyone can feel free to chime in with tweaks/new ideas

I've always been interested in creating a barcode reading program.
Before my two kids came along and took away all our free time, my wife used to collect coupons. She would put them all in a index card holder and reference them whenever she was buying something. The most time consuming part was keeping up with the expiration dates and what each coupon was for, then compare them to fliers from the supermarkets.
My idea was to barcode scan each coupon and have an online database of what the coupons were for, how much off, expiration date, and barcodes of products the coupon was valid for. I know that supermarkets have such a database but it would be great if it was available online somewhere.
Even as a community effort (users scan a coupon and type in the applicable info then upload and share with everyone else), this would be a useful little program.
In this economy, we can all use an app like this, can't we? My Wife and I used to leave the supermarket with a shopping cart full of food and personal hygiene products having only paid $3 - $10 bucks.

Not sure what exactly you trying to do ... but I am a long time Linux desktop user. Synchronising my HD2 with Kontact (the contacts and appointments) over SynCE and OpenSync without problems.
Syncing is of no interest for me, as I never use that unreliable process anyway.
Never sure what gets overwritten where.
I have TONS of tech notes stored in my Tuxcards archive which I need for my work. So I'm desperately looking for an XML viewer for my SmartPhone that can handle/display the TuxCards archive.
I've read a TuxCards look-a-like tool called BasketNotes, but it also only exports in HTML format.
And that makes the entire Collapsible Tree functionality of Tuxcards go away.
Its a real pain in the rear trying to browse through hundreds of static web pages on a smart phone.
Anyone know of a way to easily import Tuxcard XML archives e.g. into Phatnotes?
bump...bump...bump
Sorry, but I'm still looking desperately for an XML Reader for WM6.

Hhhmm, I had googled my eyes out for an XML WM6 reader and couldn't find *anything* other than Porn Sites & Crack Torrents....
I'll try the Haali Reader for starters.
Thankz a lot...
I tried all of those your Google list came up with and none works.
The best I get is some notepad like prog which reads XML like a flat text file.
Not one of them even cares to interpret the inner structure of the XML data, so no chance of a snowball in hell to get a hierarchical notebook like layout of it :-(
Specially that Haali app was a big disappointment here.
And even apps like phatnotes only support plain text file imports and TuxCards doesn't export to plain text....(only to HTML)

The question wouldn't be that stupid if not for the ABYSMALLY LOUSY quality of that HTML export
While TuxCards itself offers dynamic tree navigation, the exported HTML file is one big static dump, w/o proper font sizing and minimal (if any) graphic support.
In essence, its a pain in the rear to review, specially on a PocketPC device.
I think they just put it in there to have something listed under "Export" (just like the PhatNotes folks with their lousy Text Only import "feature").

WAMP-like (AAMP?)

Has anybody seen, or considered developing a program similar to WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL PHP) for the Android?
I've always been interested in hosting my own sites, and usually purchased the hosting simply because I never leave a computer on all day.
But given I leave my phone on all day, who's to say there can't be an application developed to host and constantly stream a website from the phone itself?
Would anybody be interested in developing something like this? I'd honestly throw down 10 bucks in android market for such a thing.

First, why? what's your use case? You're going to host websites to the internet off your 1Ghz mobile device? interesting thought but it'd be cheaper and less stress to just pay that web host.
Second, that'd be one hell of a way to chew through your battery?

Thirdly, you will have high bills for your transfer and users will have to wait ages for page to load.
Ahh and if you really want to do this, then you shouldn't think about neither Apache, MySQL nor PHP. You should use, what you have onboard: sqlite + Java (or maybe C) + some simple HTTP server (Java or C).
It wouldn't necessarily be for a professional site so to speak, more or less to fool around with.
For example (even though having use of facebook renders this completely useless) a blog hosted directly from the phone. Or with password protection, an over-the-web ftp to add apps to your phone from anywhere should you not have your cord on you.
Just little things to play with.
Nice addition Brut. But to clear the confusion, by saying WAMP, I was simply using it as a reference tool to get the point I was trying to make across. I didn't mean actually waste time making a work-around apache server on the droid, but simply a program that uses what's available on the phone to achieve the same ends.
Thanks for the input gents.
@Ruxton as far as chomping away at the battery, I wouldn't suspect it would use a high amount for what the uses are. Now to host some high-traffic sort of thing like google.com for example, ha, there really wouldn't be a chance to use the phone before it died. But as stated in my last post, little things for small uses. Of course, I didn't specify that in the topic start.

MediaWiki on Android?
Hi...
I'm interested in an "AAMP" too as I have lots of information stashed away on my laptop via MediaWiki running on WAMP. I'd love to be able to carry it around with me on my mobile phone by uploading it from my laptop's MySQL DB onto the phone (in my case, HTC Desire) if it can run "AAMP".
I just downloaded i-Jetty and what I can do with it isn't entirely apparent. Is it something that would run an AAMP and therefore allow me to do the above?

Not sure why the thank button is so close to the quote button... but oh well, I digress.
Have you considered dumping static pages from your mediawiki setup and then pushing those to the phone? If you don't need to edit the content, then having the full db backend on the phone is pointless. Just set up a script to dump the all the pages in an elegant way (wget comes to mind but there is probably a better way) and then bundle them for transfer to the phone.
Thanks for reply! Sorry for delay (floods tend to take you off the grid).
Not a bad idea about dumping static pages..but I would like to be able to navigate around & search through the mediawiki. Anyone have thoughts on AAMPing a mediawiki?
AAMPing a MediaWiki?
Anyone have any further thoughts or smart ideas on pulling this off?
Have you tried PAW Server?

Thanks for the reply. PAW server is an interesting bit of kit and certainly is a demonstration of what the device can serve up.
However..it isn't exactly what I'm trying to achieve. Basically...I need something which will run the php files and the MySQL database which are what MediaWiki is comprised of.
Whilst I could simply generate static pages from my Wiki's & read them directly on the phone, this means I lose all the advantages of links & searching which is one of the reasons why I put my notes in a MediaWiki to start off with.
So..anyone know of something like an AAMP?

Has anybody seen, or considered developing a program similar to WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL PHP) for the Android?
I've always been interested in hosting my own sites, and usually purchased the hosting simply because I never leave a computer on all day.
But given I leave my phone on all day, who's to say there can't be an application developed to host and constantly stream a website from the phone itself?
Would anybody be interested in developing something like this? I'd honestly throw down 10 bucks in android market for such a thing.
