I'm not sure if this has been mentioned on the board yet but I found a program called "Worldcard Mobile" yesterday and am, very, very impressed.
It 's a program used to automatically enter business card data into contacts using the Tytn's built in camera. The app automates the shooting of pics of business cards, the subsequent OCR recognition and the saving of data as a contact card (see below) in a quick and easy workflow.
The program works unbelievably well. Very cool, really.
One note: Although the web site doesn't explicitly mention it, the "trial" version is not fully functional, you can not save the data you generate to contacts or anywhere else.
Nevertheless, IMHO it's worthwhile to install just to see it work.
A few important points:
1. put your camery into macro mode by using the little switch next to the lens before snapping
2. for best results I've found that using the Tytn's flash while shooting results in near perfect pics/recognition.
3. I'm not sure if this is another "trial" limitation (since penpower don't say what they are), but the address area of the business card is not recoginised by default, you must us the "browse" button and put a box arround the area to recognise it (see manual).
4. The install requires about 10MB but works fine installed on my memory card.
Although, I ordered a license from the company's yahoo shop (US$24) yesterday and received a order confirmation, there is no notice of how/when I will receive the Product ID necessary to enable the fully version. I hope to get it when they get back into the office on Monday ???!!
The app download and user manual (worthwhile) can be found here:
http://www.penpower.net/enversion/product/wc_mobile.html
Have fun
M.
This is perfect! I'm going to try this out for sure!
For all those people I meet who still hand me their cards instead of bluethoothing me their contact info. How old fashioned ;-)
In singapore at least, this is bundled with 838pro......
I tried it with my device, this is amazing. about 95% of the data came right, the software is very intuitive. I am really impressed.
Is it part of the Dopod Extended ROM?

Does not work very well with my TyTN. Among other things, it seems almost incapable of recognizing text in italics. I tried to scan a number of business cards and it only recognized regular typeface text.

too bad no one hosts the version that comes on the DoPod
works great for me, $25...not so sure about that one.
BTW Got the key on yesterday. The export to contacts works flawlessly. No other features were enabled after registration.

how did you get the key? per email? the yahoo shop talks about actually sending the product per fedex!!! which costs extra 55 dollar to europe, double the price of the product itself. why don't they only send the key per email?

Interesting product - are there any other camera/character recognition programs out there -not necessairily that sync with contacts?

this will not install on the wizard due to memory issues
WorldCard Mobile: Issues with German Business Cards
At least for German business cards, WorldCard Mobile only works to a limited extend:
While the OCR recognition is quite good, it usually doesn´t associate text with the right contents. I tried it with about 20 business cards. It always recognized items like WWW-Address, EMail., Phone numbers etc.. correctly. However, it did not find address and company names.
I presume the reason is that the english version doesn´t understand how to find german style postal codes, street names etc...
Thus, the program is not sufficient for me, because I need to complete the contact data manually. In this case, I type in the whole information on my PC rather than scanning it partially and adding the address manually on my Tytn / T-Mobil Vario II.
anyone have trial version cab file? their ftp is down

Does the same thing just web based...no app to install.

I thought it was giving problems with WM5 or the exec? I'm holding off for now.... on my last device though, I had to install it to the memory, but was able to install it to the small internal storage memory on the jam, and avoided cluttering up the main memory.
I didn't know that Voice command does not work with WM 5.
Hmmm....maybe that would explain the problems.
Anybody else want to chip in?
VC works fine, especially with the BT reg hack.
The only pain is that it does not work when the unit is closed with the screen face down.
Yup, works great for me with the registry hack but it is a small bummer that the "show (contact name)" will only display a white screen. Overall very happy that all my calls can be made via bluetooth and with the caller ID on my Sony BT I don't have to touch the phone at all!
Regards,
Gordo
Is it worth the high price for it ?
I only had a trial UK version and although it worked ok with the SPV M1000 I'm not sure about it on the Exec. And Microsoft doesn't just give them away free....
I installed Microsoft Voice Command on my jas-jar and my views are well mixed.
The speaker independent voice recognition amazes you most of the time yet it manages to annoy you too. For "good" words in english that are not difficult to pronounce it does good and if you have your contacts stored as initials such as JD for Junaid it works wonders with 100% accuracy. And its really good for opening applications like "Start Internet Explorer". Also I had no problems installing it on WM5. However most of my contacts have names that do not spell very well in English and hence I uninstalled it however it is worth the price in my opinion very good recognition.
It's working well on my jasjar. I think it's worth the price especially if you have a lot of contacts. It can be tedious if you have to associate a lot of voice tags for contacts with the included voice software.
For those of you who have VC working well on the Universal, where did you all install the program to?
The SD card or internal memory?

I don't think we can blame the software for not being able to handle names like Siobhan and Caolin.
MSVC on jasjar
I have it working, and working well. Install to device to try and avoid the time lag on startup from device and storage.
There is a file that can be installed from the ozvga package that if placed into the windows folder will allow the contacts details to be shown, their is a detailed forum on how to do this.
outres.96.dll I think is the name of the file you will need.
Overall, I am very very happy with, and much better than processing voice tags.

It's a bit big to install to main memory?
I kepp all system apps that iuse daily in storage and useful occasional apps to sd card.
anything that needs to be available at boot up should be on device, eg today plug ins like spb and omega one (both of which I have all, both of which I removed due to seious slow downs)
so the only one I now keep on my device are resco explorer and plugins, voice command, and m$ eread4er (reqd to activate)
in have over 20 meg still avilable, and a 1 gig storage cqrd 75% full.
also, word, excel notes and camera all save to storage, so I don't even have much of a need for the existing extra except for emails and web pages and temps.
without spb and omegaone, my device runs really fast, particularly if you keep but upps on device, don't display memory readers or battery readers.
it boots up with msvc, 5meg pim and resco plugin as 30meg.
I did overload the plugins and features and they all slowed it down. so managing and understanding what is necessary at bootup and what can slow it down, and changing all non vital storage to sd card means that everything is really fast, efficient and stable.
I've had no luck with the outres.96.dll file and I've copied it into the \Windows folder. MS Voice Command does find the contact but the contact details are not shown. (It'd be even better if MSVC displayed Pocket Informant contacts !!)
Has anybody had any luck getting contacts to display without using one of the VGA hacks ?

Here's a tip for you guys ... Voice command uses both contact name and nickname, so add a NICKNAME field to your contact and spell the name how you would pronounce it. For example, I have a friend named "Hwa Chang", but it's actually pronounced more like "Hua Chung"
To my experience....
No point wasting money on this since there are to many word variations in the english dictionary....I found "dial" number to be absolutlly useless.... find myself talking like a robot.... after a while you might feel like throwing your handheld against the wall...half the time i cant understand what that robotic merlin voice is on about and at times talks to fast....
This is only my opinion since everyone is entitled to one and a few people here have said to be happy with it and at the end of the day it has a trial period so you can only try it and see for yourselfe.

I use the 'CALL HOME' style which seems to work fine but I'd say the computer voice is more like chinese lady than merlin & robotic.

Ihad no luck with displaying the contacts, and when I tried to install the vga stuff it stopped my XDA from restarting properly had to do a hard-reset.
One thing to note is that the .dll needs to be registered and if you have the pin number option when starting it hides the prompt asking for you to allow the .dll
If you turn off the pin number option you can accept the .dll - though it did not work for me it may for you! You can always turn the pin back on afterwards.

Just curious if anyone has tried WorldCard Mobile (optical character recognition program) on the Hermes? Supposedly you can take a picture of a business card and it will import all contact details into a new contact record in Outlook for you...

i have.. it worked the first few times then i started having dramas with text being missed so i stopped trying it out.
It works perfect on X01HT (Hermes)...
Work Well no problem at all
anyone know of a simillar program, that just recognices text, without buisiness cards?
tried it, gave up after using it a few times. Not accurate enough.
I've used WorldCard Mobile extensively on my Dopod 838Pro and it works well. Found it especially a boon when at trade shows where you tend to collect too many business cards!
As to accuracy, the product is as accurate as other such offerings that scan cards and then recognize them. I've used an AccuCard scanner for some years and it is just as good.
If you expect 100% results, you will be disappointed but if you're prepared to edit the results a little, this app can save you valuable time.
Best of all, it came free with my Dopod phone!
Works fine on my Orange SPV M3100. A bit of editing is usually necessary though.
any link to this application or can a cab file be posted in here.
I found a website that may sell this application, but it doesn't look like there is a demo version to test for 30 days.
http://www.penpower.net/enversion/product/wc_mobile.html
It's bundled into several pocketpc phones as part of the OEM software package.
Ok - found out it offers a 30 day trial, but doesn't let you export the data to anything, so I have no idea how well it imports into Outlook contacts. That's a half-useless demo. But it does seem to recognize the characters pretty well. If only someone had a real .cab from one of the bundled OEM pdas to try out...
Even the OEM bundled app on my Dopod 838Pro required registration on the site and this registration number is locked to the phone...
In fact Dopod supplies the software on a separate CD that must be installed and it's not pre-installed in the ROM.
But the recognition is the difficult part and the one area where some manual intervention may be necessary. In any case, I like to keep all my phone numbers in the +<Country_Code> international format and since few business cards display information that way, editing is almost always necessary.
The actual export to Outlook is virtually a non-issue. Works perfectly, quickly and reliably so if you like the recognition, go ahead and buy the app.
thanks - glad to know the Outlook export works. I'm going to test on some more business cards then, and see how the recognition works...
I bought this app on website three months ago and it works. Save my time. Typing every contacts almost kills me. Recognition is good and export to outlook perfectly. Every field is fit on Outlook. So, no doubt Worldcard Mobile is great app for my HTC. I recommend this for you!!!
I have WorldCard Color. It preforms well. Not the high-end product in this company, but I prefer this because price is reasonable and also can scan my photos. That is my another reason to buy WorldCard Color instead of Ultra. Honestly, I like Ultra's look more than Color. So stylish and not look like scanner. Cool ...but pricey...
For quality and speed, Color did a very good job. Recognizing any size of business cards and any language. Very fast, and easy to use. I also used Cardscan for a while, works perfect. But for price issue, I chose this Color. Multi-function and lower price attract me to own this.
If I remember, the price is $130 or lower. I got this with some promotion. Hopefully, there is some promotion. Economy is so bad and save money is big issue.
Hi guys.
I saw this program on the news a minute ago and the concept is really cool. With the builtin GPS or WiFi (how can WiFi be accurate!!!!), a user presses an auto/self configured button to report each of the 4 kinds of trap. When a user is at the vicinity of a trap, a shrill voice (builtin/self recorded) will announce the type of trap to the user. The web site is at http://www.trapster.com. Every body must have thought of this concept before (me included) but thank Jebus finally some body did it!!!
I just sent my X7500 back to get the MicroDrive fixed so don't have anything to test it with. Would some body with an Athena please try this program and report any problems using it on this particular device?
It's still in beta and free right now. However, if it becomes a subscription service, I wouldn'd mind paying for it. Provided that the fee is reasonable like the $20/year subscription fee of www.schedulesdirect.org If it is more than $20/year, I will have second thoughts.
How much would you pay for it?

Woah, who got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?...
In the US it's a good idea - very sketchy in the UK at the moment and not as good as the PocketGPS ones or those available in Cameraware. But then they are free! Again, critical mass needs to be reached - in the US with very little alternative, it might be, in the UK I'm not so sure.
Just my 2d's worth.
I'm going to DL it and test it for ya bud. Thanks for the heads up with this s/w. And as "Con" said they're in the UK so they have other options we don't. I'll give feedbacks later on after I test it.

Well after reading the how to on the website today, you have to actually dl it to the pc first and install it through active sync. I wasn't able to do it from work plus I didn't have my data cable with me in the office. I'll get around to it tonight tho and let you know how it goes.

What a big disappointment!!! The concept is great but the Windows Mobile version of this program is still in *JUNK* status. It lacks many of most basic functions such as GPS configuration (port, baud, etc...) It installed alright on my Athena. However, when I ran it, it kept telling me "Can't get GPS location (87)..." while all of my other GPS apps (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live) that were running at the same time had no GPS problem at all. I'll wait for the next version before using it.
Edited: The GPS problem is most likely due to AP4...
I have downgraded my athena to ap3 and the gps problem is fixed. so the previous gps problem is because of ap4. with the athena, there's no good way to report redlight, etc... by key press as the athena's key assignment took precedent. However, the announcement is excellent though the volume is pretty low. I will have to re-record the alert messages.
Sorry for late chime - in

We've now added the capability to connect to GPS directly via the COM port, in addition to the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) method which is supposed to handle all that automatically. The problem with the direct COM port method is that the app (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live, and Trapster(R)) then "hogs" the GPS. This sort of sharing is what the GPSID was supposed to fix, but unfortunately in an attempt to block all apps that are not paid (like TeleNav etc.) carriers have gimped the config screens etc. I've seen COM port "splitter" programs but have not tested them personally.
What a big disappointment!!!

I think this fixes your main objection. Please give it another look and let us know what you think.
We also added (some other stuff relevant to Windows):
- a mobile site. Just go to trapster.com/m and you can sign up, sign in, and download right there.
- "Ack" feature for Windows Mobile and "CarPC" (which means just run on your laptop) If you are a regular Trapster user in any US metro area (where trap density is high) you will definitely appreciate the "Ack" feature. No more ears ringing "police often hide here"... you just hit Ack (or mapped voice command) and it mutes until you encounter a new trap.
- support for WiFi location mode in Vista.
Hey trapster,
Thank you for such a cool app. Once I get used to it, it's pretty cool to use. I used it in July while I was visiting Florida and it did saved me from being pulled over while driving through the Alligator Alley. I'm using it every day now. Pretty cool.
For us Athena users, while the key mapping is not working well, I found that we can put the trapster folder on Start menu and have it opened in the background with all command icons showing. I'm using it with CoPilot. When I see an incident I need to report, I simply click on the [OK] button to minimize CoPilot and click on the appropriate icon to report the incident. Then I click on CoPilot again to open it up over the trapster menu. It's workable. Wish Athena has more buttons or Trapster is integrated with Microsoft Voice Command. It would be sooo cool to click a button to activate Microsoft Voice Command and say "Report Live Police" and have everything else done for us.

Hi sumtingwong, thanks for the kind words and glad Trapster saved you a ticket in Alligator Alley (of course the way the enforcement system works, that just means someone else got pulled over instead, but...).
Stephen Skarlatos of Pocket Now wrote about Trapster being integrated with Microsoft Voice Command here:
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1051&p=1
and in there says:
I use Microsoft Voice Command to report traps. As example to report a live police activity, I initiate Voice Command and say "start report live police", which initiate the trapster report livepolice function.
Hi guys,
I must admit that I didn’t write software for a few years, and this is my first attempt after a long break – so please be gentle…
Xchange R8 is a simple currency convertor. You can choose 3 currencies to be displayed and for the time being you have two WebServices available: Bank of Romania (for my Romanian friends) and Bank of England (for my other friends). Bank of England currency are accessed via the Export Technologies WebService.
You need of course an Internet connection.
For Bank of Romania you can choose to see the currencies as they were at a certain date. Before you ask, chosing a date in the future will alas not work. The Export Technologies service does not have this function though, and when working with the Bank of England this choice will be unavailable.
The program remembers the last downloaded values for each service.
Please note that the Export Technologies service (for Bank of England) is slow – an update can take up to a minute. There’s nothing I can do about that.
I wrote this program initially for myself, as I often needed to know the currency rates and this is much faster than navigating from the browser. Then I saw somebody on this forum asking about such a program. While I’m sure better solutions can be found, I had a lot of fun writing this. Besides, it’s free!
I’m totally willing to add other WebServices to the list if you can provide me with their address.
Please note that I can only work on this during weekends: I have a company to run and it takes almost all my time.
Another note: .NET 3.5 framework is required.
UPDATE: v 1.1:
Added Bank of Hungary web service
Corrected a bug in the calendar: when first opened it always went to a day in July. Now it defaults to today.
Notes: Bank of Hungary does not update the service daily. Therefore, after you press Download, you may see a different date than today appearing at the top: this is the date of the last update. Furthermore, because of this, when you use the calendar to choose a date, you may get the message "No data available for the chosen date!". Simply choose another date. Hint: they don't update during weekends.
UPDATE 21/08/08 v 1.2
Added Invert function for those who prefer to see the exchange course mirrored. For example, if before you saw 1 GBP = 2 USD, after Invert you'll see 1 USD = 0.5 GBP.
Added calculator. For pic see next post.
UPDATE Oct 9 2008 v 2.0
You can now convert from EUR to USD and actually whatever you want from a list of 150 currencies. Choose Webservicex from Options -> Currencies.
Please note that this service is updating all the time, so values taken at a few minutes apart can vary slightly. This may actually be a good thing if you want to feel the pulse of the market in these stressed times.
One problem with Webservicex (affecting only Romanians as far as I can tell): it only contains the old currency (ROL) and it always returns zero. I don't see this as real trouble, as you can always use the Bank of Romania service.
Pic for the calculator:

I definitely would. However, I need what is called a WebService, like http://www.exporttechnologies.com/webservices/currencyservice/currencyservice.asmx?WSDL.
That is usually an XML file defining the access to the service. A site simply giving a list of currencies is not a web service.
I looked at the Czech National Bank site (the english version) and could not find any link to a service. Perhaps you can help me there?

Russian CBR. Is it OK? Or you need smth. else?
thanks for the app, is very usefull, can you add El Banco de España: Bank of Spain, please
Also would be nice to have the following feature:
CUR1/CUR2 (both chosen by user)
i.e. EUR/USD
This is lovely (for some, and for me!), downloading now.
Why not add a mini-calc as well?

I definitely would. However, I need what is called a WebService, like http://www.exporttechnologies.com/webservices/currencyservice/currencyservice.asmx?WSDL.
That is usually an XML file defining the access to the service. A site simply giving a list of currencies is not a web service.
I looked at the Czech National Bank site (the english version) and could not find any link to a service. Perhaps you can help me there?

Sorry, unless I'm very wrong this is just a method to set the date (and info) on their site. I can't use this to retrieve the data in the application.
A webservice link always ends with WSDL.
This can tell you if I can use it or not. By the way, WSDL = Web Services Description Language, in case you wondered

I now, what is WSDL.
CNB provides only txt or HTML format. You can't use txt format?
Thanx
Hi there! I'm looking for a good anti theft software for my X1. I have already tried several ones. I'd like to know your opinion, what you are using and what you can recommend and WHY. Here's what I've tried: Ultimate Theft Alert, SmartProtect and WIMP. I have also tried Smartphone Tracker which was the best IMO but it's not antitheft, just tracking. What I absolutely need to have is the following:
-Notify on SIM change
-Determine GPS Coordinates
-Not easy removable (Or it should be possible ot make it hard to remove manually)
Nice to have:
-Send Google Maps link with the location
-Live tracking
-Several commandos to lock phone etc...
-Remote control over internet instead of SMS
-Get image of the cam that captures you during videocalls, so you can see the thief if he looks at the phone in that very moment
I hope you have some suggestions to make. You can also suggest the software I've already tried, but tell me WHY. So far I didn't get Ultimate Theft Alert to work at all. WIMP works well but offers too little and it's quite slow. SmartProtect has a crappy interface. The last 2 can be uninstalled through "Remove Programs" and are fully unfunctional afterwards - bull****.
Thank you for your help!
that sounds like some crazy FBI stuff
lol i would be more then happy to get my hands on that
but for phones i duno if theres any good enough trackers

SmartProtect is for free. You can find it on XDA. This is nothing special nor has it anything to do with FBI. It's basically about catching incoming messages, recognizing SIM change and determining GPS Position. Basic stuff. There are a lot of these apps out there. The developers are just to bad to produce something very good, or I haven't found it yet, which is more likely. That's why I opened this thread.
Smartphone tracker
Sprite Terminator works well
WIMP is what you need. I have it installed on mine in stealth mode.

The first thing I would do if I want to steal an WM phone un-notice is flash it w/ any rom via SD method then render all those software useless

Yeah for sure, but we're not talking about thiefs who actually know what a ROM/Hardreset/Flash is. You should consider that out of 100 people maybe 1 person knows how to mess with a well-hidden Antitheft Software. So if the software is working properly you should stand a 99% chance to get your moible back, and that's quite worth the 2 MB of space it consumes.
THanks to the others for your suggestions. I'll try RemoteTracker then. BuddyLee, what do you like about WIMP? I don't really see any advantages, what can you do with it apart from locating your phone?
Any other suggestions are ALWAYS welcome!
i think gpsgate would be god.
It uses imei and (wifi or gprs) . log on the gpsgate page and see where is phone. if its cooked in for YOurself remember to turn off the service after reboot to save battery.
so if the phone will be stolen they will insert ovn card and as soon phone gets wifi or gprs it will send location .
cos if sim card is changed YOu cant send sms to phone

SW that needs a portal to see your location sucks. If they're bankrupt, your phone is lost. Good anti-theft SW detects SIM change and notifies you - you will find this in my 1st post in necessary features. It means that the SW checks the SIM on boot and if it'a different, it sends an SMS to a predefined number. Obviously, the SMS will be sent over the thief's number and as the receiver you will see his number then. That's the main point of anti-theft-SW.

Well for me all i wanted it for was incase I lose my xperia i can find it back.
Its installed and all program links, remove programs from the list and other detection are gone (stealth mode only way you notice it is if you go into the windows directory when you hook it up to the computer ... meanwhile its some funny name that you would never think its that)
It texts you everytime the sim is changed to give your their new number + gps cordinates
Thats basically it for me with my needs for lojack
I'm using RemoteTracker. Best about it, that you can make it Hardreset safe if you cook it into your ROM.
I have Ultimate Theft Alert, it has few glitches, most notably the GPS not sending the longitude (therefore useless).
But it takes remote commands, can be cooked in rom, sends phones and sms's from the thief and stuff. Pretty powerful and at discount is very cheap.
If they fix the gps glitch (which they said are working on), it'll be perfect.

Don't get it , why not using a free open source program, when it works just fine and is very very smart? there you can make changes if you need, can or have money to make some one do it for you!
I see your suggestions vary. I have installed Sprite Terminator meanwhile and so far it seems to be the best one among all that were mentioned - if it works the way it should. I have been abroad, so I didn't want to test the features because I don't have unlimited money cheat enabled in my life But I will test it tomorrow. UI and features look great though, uninstallation is password-protected and configuration is simple and effective. I will post my experiences as soon as I've tested it regarding GPS performance and command processing.
why not try smart phone tracker?
it does fine...and its free too
I've tried the GPS of Sprite Terminator now and I'm very pleased but there is one disadvantage, the link provided in the message uses a Website of the manufacturer to display the location (using Google Maps). Direct link to Google Maps would be far better... But apart from that, it's just perfect!
