NVIDIA and Qualcomm seem to get all the love when it comes to processors for Android devices. While these are powerful processors, we can’t forget about our good old friends from Texas Instruments (TI), whose processors are very capable of running all your content. To prove this, Texas Instruments has just announced they are the first to partner with Netflix to run the Netflix HD app coming to OMAP 4 Android devices.
Netflix HD will be able to stream your favorite movies and TV shows at 1080p at about 30 frames per second. The OMAP 4 Netflix certification will support Android 2.3 Gingerbread. But according to TI, support for other Android versions is coming this year (probably Android 2.3+).

It was only a matter of time before AMD followed Nvidia's lead and finally jumped onto the Android bandwagon, as the company is now recruiting engineers to create chipset drivers for Android. According to unnamed sources, the nation's second largest CPU manufacturer is now looking to offer notebook and tablet partners chipset solutions supporting Google's popular mobile platform.
"The Linux Base Graphics team is looking for Android Driver Development engineers to help us evolve our driver stack for new platforms and in line with the development trends in the Android ecosystem," reads the job description. "Experience with video decode acceleration within the Android web browser or video player application would be an asset. Experience with webm and/or OpenMax would be a bonus."
The company confirmed its interest in Android during an interview back in mid-March. Neal Robison, senior director of content and application support at AMD, indicated that offering support for Google's mobile platform makes a lot of sense for the company. "That is something we will be investigating as we take our Fusion architecture [into new markets] and we are able to create versions of this architecture for lower power environments that would work quite well for, perhaps, a tablet using this operating system."

Funny because the other week I speculated this
Does AMD even have an ARM CPU? Or can Android run on x86?
It's good ATI will come to Android.
I just ordered a lot of ati gear. Great was my surprise to receive it in hp boxes. So basically hp is creating phones?

HP is WebOs but they aren't apart of AMD. They're just buyers of AMD/ATI products and embed them within their systems.
good news for us
hopefully this time they actually make the drivers open source
last time i purchased an AMD/ATI based Windows Phone, it was a disaster, no drivers, so the GPU was wasted

blame it on Microsoft they'll have to release source to comply with android. Otherwise they will be in trouble.
Who knows? Nexus 4 could feature amd. Amd definitely have a lot of work to do to catch up to its competitors.

All the Qualcomm CPUs use Adreno GPUs, which is a rehashed ATI product. ATI used to own Imageon.
Hopefully this will lead to cheaper phones too....like the six core they have for like 200

There are alot of games, both with 3D and 2D graphics, that work fine with the new chip. Gameloft and Glu Mobile are examples of companies with 3D games that run flawlessly on the E3D and the Sensation.
Any game using the Unity engine on the other hand, constantly freezes. Both game developers and Unity are blaming the firmware and the drivers that HTC has installed. Although I understand that there can definately be problems with the drivers and that the full potential of the MSM8660 is still out in the open, I find it hard to believe that is the sole problem here.
I'm just curious what you guys think. There are multiple threads on both the Android Forums as well as the Unity forums talking about this. If it is a problem with the driver, what is the culprite behind the scenes doing to allow one 3D engine work and another not too?
no one will know. This is the only thing that sucks about phone that dont use nvidia chipset. Nvidia actually helps out developers optimize games for their tegra chipsets, while qualcomm is not that involved, it is up to the developer to use the tools provided by qualcomm and do their own thing, if they are having problems I doubt qualcomm steps out of their way like nvidia to be in sync with developers.
Plus there is a root issue, if there was root may be developers here will be able to impelent latest drivers they could get from qualcomm, just like they did with nvidia tegra based devices.
Unless HTC takes responsibility you and I will be waiting for a wile before the game developers figures out to work out all the kinks.
Ya, time will tell I guess...Hopefully HTC unlocks the bootloader soon.
I hear HTC is developing a site like Tegra Zone

I know that Qualcomm said they were making an appstore similar to the Tegra Zone, I never heard HTC doing anything like that though.
Skype just updated their Android app and stated that those phones not directly on the list but running 2.2 should still be able to manually enable skype via going into settings....unfortunately when I installed it there is no enable video call...
Link to article --> http://www.pcworld.com/article/2372..._on_more_android_smartphones.html#tk.rss_news
Wonder if this is because I'm now on gingerbread and its not enabled generically on 2.3.4 or the other line in the story is if video enablement is not visible in settings it means your phone does not meet minimum requirements (hard to believe as this is more advanced than many of the enabled phones)
Hoping some of our devs can find a hack to enable!!!
So they have, that sucks because I have contacts I would frequently like to call using video.
I want video calls support too ...

Outside of Fring which isn't nearly as well known and no PC platform, it would allow you to make video calls to all our iphone contacts plus PC/Mac users.
I've used the yahoo messenger videochat and its not bad, but not nearly as many people use/run yahoo messenger so its not as ubiquitous as skype..

Thanks for the link! I will post on that thread and ask them.
their library does not support the Tegra. Our processor doesn't support NEON architecture, which the Skype video libary uses. there's no way devs can get around it, because they've tried. The main Skype app hacker, droidrx, in the Software forum IS an Atrix owner, ironically. He's enabled video on Skype for dozens of devices but ours will NOT work until Skype makes the library compatible with the Tegra.
see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285
Anyone read this before and have access to this kit?
Tegra 2 enables new mobile media and gaming capabilities:
For the first time, consumers will be able to game with multiple players using different types of devices. For example, a Tegra 2-powered super phone or tablet can be used to play with players on a desktop PC.
NVIDIA demonstrated a prototype of Skype HD video calling on an Android tablet at its CES 2011 press conference. NVIDIA developed a reference implementation of HD video conferencing on Tegra 2-based tablets using SkypeKit. SkypeKit is a collection of software and APIs that allows virtually any Internet connected device to offer Skype voice and video calls.
Tango
There is a good option that I just started using which is TANGO. This app is compatible with the iOS devices, and have just announced support for Windows. Skype does not have the slightest intent to support the Tegra CPU.
Come on skype...The atrix community wants video too.
our phone is such the most powerful phone that we dont support skype. gotta love irony eh? ;D
I'm starting to regret getting the Atrix soley based on Tegra 2, it seems to be responsible for more problems than good it does.
:/ Darn. Well this sucks.
we just have to be patient.
i can't wait until the atrix gets skype w/ video.
Dude u dont regret about getting a phone just because you dont have enough support available for it yet. When the phone came out, people who bought it bought 'em not only because its a nice sexy piece of harware but its the most powerful phone of its time.
Lets deal with, things are getting better, bootloader unlocked, new custom roms available, all sorts of hacks are being made available... it will get there when we can make a video call through skype...
just wait not hate..
Cheers

pretty sad that bigOl' NVidia tegra 1 was fail, not tegra 2 is still missing features. they make some of the best chips, i mean.. come on. at least AMD didnt make it LOL, our phones would be 100C and melt. but still. im sure we will get support sometime, when nokia releases their new Meebo phone they are working on i think im going to go to that for a while and wait to tegra 2 gets fully optimized.

Gingerbread cannot run full profile HD whether it be 720 or 1080P due to lack of NEON code. Which most likely is the same reason why skype video does not work on Tegra 2...Plenty of posts about full profile HD not running on Tegra 2, not now probably not ever...
Skype Video for Tegra 2
IIRC, on CES 2011, nVidia wrote an app using SkypeKit and demoed video calling with the Tegra 2.
So although the official Skype app requires NEON instruction sets, I wonder if it is possible to write an app similar to nVidia's which we know works with Tegra 2.
Hi all. The other day I was "lucky" winner RK66

Summarizes the characteristics: Rockchip RK3066, ARM Cortex-A9 dual core, 1.2GHZ; GPU: Mali-400 MP4 quad core
Interested in running it XBMC (xbmc ! org).
Now there is a RC3 version for Android devices, but it is not a pleasant limit screen resolution (1280x672).
I also read about a version of linux for android mini pc, but it is in the stage of pre-alpha.
Maybe someone else knows what or installation options XBMC (media center or similar)?
Just looking for information on updating the device in the future, where I can get the firmware?
Interested in running CyanogenMod and firmware based on it.
XBMC like the ability to install additional plug-ins to watch online movies from websites.
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.
Edit: Sorry misread your post. Yes linux Pi****u is 0.3 alpha. Wireless isn't working on it properly yet among other things.
There is a XBMC Frodo Beta 2 on the net somewhere done by someone called Lewy I've not tried it but it works on the MK808
If you search youtube for MK808 XBMC beta 2 the video will show up. From what I've read a lot of the features are working with this version, but again I've not tried it.
Hope this helps.

This device is quite similar to others like the MK802iii from the sounds of it. Progress on CM on them will likely help this, given it's an RK3066 CPU as well.
Thanks for answers.
I realized that I would have to wait.
Even test the version XBMC, support for Full HD still no.
Do not tell me how to get root rights on this ustroyve or similar?
P.S. They are in very short supply for functions mount, reboot.

Has anybody confirmed this? I am interested as well as I have recently purchased an rk66 mini tv box.

I keep seeing conflicting info, is there a way to get Amazon Prime Video on my Nexus-Player, as a Prime customer??? I have installed Amazon Underground but it is still asking for Prime Video to be installed, which I haven't found.
There is a method using Amazon Underground as well as a custom launcher hosted here somewhere called Prime Video Launcher which handles the proper login needed. However, the video quality seems to be limited to 480p, and the apps don't work well at all without a keyboard/mouse.
Huge headache. I gave up. Amazon doesn't want my money bad enough.

Sorry
Has anyone tried the amazon video for the nvidia shield?
Noob User
I have a Roku and fireTV boxes, but since I really like streamers I bought a Nexus Player this week, because I saw a comparison video with a MiBox and the Nexus was running Android 7.1 and recent security update. I bought an OTG Ethernet adapter from Amazon to go with it. After factory resetting the player it was like setting up a brand new streamer. Anyway, Amazon Video is what we all want, of course, if we have a Prime membership. I knew the Shield had recently gotten the app and since the Nexus is still being supported with updates very well I have to wonder, reasonably I think, if there is a real chance the Nexus will get the app. I did install the APK for Amazon Video and like everybody else it installs, you can watch trailers, but that's as far as it goes.
Anybody think there is any chance the deal will be done for the Nexus Player? thanks!
I doubt it. I finally gave up and bought the Shield.

wont install, I believe because its not an x86 app as the nexus player is using an intel x86 processor and not the more common ARM or ARM64 in phones (if it where you could just deal with a portrait/phone/touch based UI on a tv until you get to video playing back). Also its supposedly (according to reddit) the same app countries other than USA have had in the play store for some time, amazon only today flagged it as install-able by the USA market.
Ok, was suspicious about the x86 proc. Not many devices left using it. Cheers.

I'm not sure if it's a x86 thing.
I just updated the Amazon Prime Video app (current version 3.0.209.146341) through the Play Store on my wife's Asus Memo Pad 7 ME572C, and that tablet has an Intel Atom Z3560 (quad-core 1.83GHz / PowerVR G6430 with 2GB RAM / 16GB memory) in it. The Nexus Player has the exact same SoC, I believe.
I would imagine that the Prime Video app doesn't show up on the Play Store because it doesn't have a Leanback UI so it's not flagged as compatible for the Nexus Player. That's my guess, anyway.
