Hello everyone. I am a novice to rooting and sideloading and ROM loading and etc., etc., etc. While my Nook color was rooted a few moments after I received it and CWR flashed to 1.1 update later, I am in no way shape or form proficient in any of this and have some basic questions I'm hoping can be answered.
I basically want to go to the B&N 1.2 upgrade (clean, fresh, stock, unmolested, CWR removed, etc.) and be able to "dual boot" via SD card to CM7 when I want to use it as a tablet, while keeping all of my current apps and downloads. Currently I'm on a rooted 1.1 ROM flashed via CWM from auto-nooter 1.0.1. Is this possible?
There is a thread in the Android dev section that has 2 zip files attached, basically stating that to do the "revert to clean" upgrade I flash load the zip file, wipe the two directories via CWR, reboot and poof, CWR is gone and 1.2 is fresh and clean, but I'm unsure if this allows me to retain my apps and downloads. Am I correct in my understanding? If not, can anyone point me in the right direction?
Similar but more basic question
Semi-noob with same question as above, except that I didn't install CWM/CWR, like many others I just rooted a Nook Color 1.1 with Autonooter 3, and use Zeam for 50-odd apps along with Stock 1.1 for reading (and wifistatic for my fixed IP). I have all the apps and data backed up with Titanium to a card.
I plan on just shutting off Wifi until:
1. It is clear whether 1.2 will or won't try to autoload with this simple configuration, and what happens if it tries to do so.
2. Autonooter 4 is issued.
3. There are simple instructions for upgrading to 1.2, rerooting it with Autonooter 4, and restoring apps from Titanium. [Please?] The info in the other thread, so far, is too varied and complicated for those of us who appreciate all your hard work but really don't understand it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050164
Thank you!
I too have the Nook (1.1) rooted using Autonooter. Copying the 1.2 B&N file to the nook does nothing. The file disappears after sometime, How does one even upgrade in this case? Thanks.
Tog
I followed the instructions here to restore to stock 1.1 then sideload 1.2. It worked flawlessly.

I used the method listed in this link and it worked perfectly -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
Now to look into a bootable CM7 via SD. I kinda want my old functions back, just don't want a molested nook anymore.

Yes same procedures however your link provides a more basic, easy to follow set of instructions especially for the newbie.
Just make sure you use the correct firmware that came with the nook, either 1.01, or 1.1.

If you find another easy link for this (CM7 on SD) please post, as that's what I'm looking for also.

Potential fix for Angry Bird install after manual neuter
A lot of people are saying that you can't install angry birds with the SD card installed. This sounds like the problem that I had with my Droid X. To fix it I had to delete the file left from the prior install under .android secure on the SD card. I guess that Froyo sometimes has issues with this file getting corrupt on the micro SD and then it can't install correctly during updates and reinstalls. I think you lose all previous data but at least you have it working normally now with the SD card installed. I'll try it on my nook and post back. I would have put this in the manual nooter thread but I don't have enough posts to post there.
Any word on when Autonooter 4 will be out? Can't find any info about that...
Thanks,
Doug

If you look at the manual nooter thread, they're working out a few issues. It's about 95% there, id say, but until the experience is 100% I doubt you'll see an autonooter 4.0.
Is it possible to update the u-boot to 1.2 without having to reflash the whole
ROM? I'm happy with the way everything is on my 12 hour old Nook....
Phiremod v6.2 installed without a hitch and I just want to try out some kernels....
I hope that this thread can be pinned so that we can all be warned about serious conflicts with app updates and versions and some of the kernels and roms we have flashed. Still hoping this thread will be used for solid advice. Please contribute.
Some of these apps/versions are consistently causing problems, including near-bricks.
My first warning is for Xoomers to avoid updating to the 4.XXX version of Clockwork Recovery. This version doesn't "see" our external sdcard, and backs up to the internal sd, and also, prevents flashing from the external sdcard...if you have already updated through Clockwork Mod Rom Manager, you will need to re-flash a good recovery.
Update 6/21-- This is still a problem--do not update to Version 4.XXX of Clockwork Mod Recovery through ROM Manager. If you did, then in RM, scroll to the bottom and flash an older recovery (2.0.2.5 I think) then the newest one pinned to the top of solarnz's thread in the development section.
There have also been problems with the updated busybox and with the binaries that the updated superuser app installs.
Please, can we get more definitive statuses on these two applications?
Please use this thread and add in your own known problem apps, etc. and if possible suggest or link to solutions for others who may be ensnared in these conflicts.
Okantomi is right. This thread should be pinned. I have seen at least a dozen cries for help on Q&A from people that have fallen into these two traps.

Thanks cam30era, you have been one of the people giving the warnings as well.
OK this is a shameless bump to keep the thread visible.
Oh yes, and never flash a .zip file through adb!!!
ROM manager causes so many problems. I don't see the point of it.

It's actually a very useful app in so many ways, but there should be more coordination between the developers...it seems the 4.XXX update sort of treats the Xoom like a phone with only a small internal memory and an external sd card being the only thing called sdcard.
On a tablet, however, we have a large internal sdcard (32GB on Xoom) and mounted to that is our external sdcard (this mount point is one of the reasons that Google is hesitant to OK the external SDcard on tablets--makes for an awkward file structure, I guess). This version of CWM seems to only see our internal sdcard on the root directory and treats it as the external sd.
If this explanation is wrong, those with more knowledge please correct me. I think it's helpful for people to know, in layman's terms, what's going wrong, as it can help them use logic to avoid problems in the future, but I don't want to spread mis-information!

I think these are either in conflict with the Tiamat ROM 1.0 /and or newest updates missing files (busybox). This was recorded in an ongoing discussion in development (dinomight OP) and I fell victim to updating to a conflicting busybox version. All was fine until I rebooted and stared the dreaded RSD 3 in the face. God only knows how I made it back from the edge...

I installed busybox from the market too, is it safe to uninstall? I was trying to get cifs to work somehow and I ended up installing busy box. The xoom froze and I got the RSD 3 somehow. I kept smashing button combinations until it rebooted. It has been fine ever since.

Long story short :
The busybox wasn't compiled with run-parts. In our rom, the ramdisk used to rely on this for init.d. This has been fixed.
With superuser, the su binary appears to be incompatible. I haven't had a look at this issue yet.

Thank you solarnz. So is the busybox in the market safe to install/update or do you have a link to the fixed version?
As long as you have flashed the rom update 3, you can flash busybox without worrying.
Ok, my wife got an NC and at first she loved it, then the more she started messing around with it, the more she noticed it would freeze occasionally here and there. I suggested going the custom rom route and overclocking, but before I started the process wanted to make sure a couple of things.
1. After reading it seems like if you want to run a custom rom, it MUST be run from the sd card? Is this correct? Or is it possible to run it from the emmc?
2. After installing custom roms, will she still be able to access her library? Can she re-download the stuff she had previously? I'm not sure how all this works yet tbh, lol... (I would assume yes, but we all know what assuming does )
3. I saw something where people were install the custom rom to the sd, but still running the stock on the emmc, why?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

1. False, I would reccomend running from the eemc if you won't miss the stock ui
2. I do not know as after I opened up my nook I installed cm7 to my eemc hopefully someone else can help you here
3. Eh, some people like the stock reading experience I guess. You could run stock from a SD card if you still want to keep it around.

1.It's not necessary to run it in the emmc, but it is RECOMMENDED provided that you're willing to lose the STOCK ROM.
2.She can't access her library IF the custom ROM has been installed in the emmc, but if it was installed in the sd, she can. What she'll need to do is just boot the nook without the SD in it.
3.Yup. It's because theywant to retain being able to use the regular stock ROM, which of course has access to B&N's market for books and apps. But now, it's possible to install the stock ROM in the sd.
Ok, so if she wants access to her library she has to use the stock rom PERIOD, right? Any tips on making the stock rom freeze up less? Is it safe just rooting and overclocking the stock rom?

YES. If the library's a MUST for her, then you can just root the stock rom (so you can install market apps) and flash dalingrin's kernel to overclock it (which would significantly speed up the nook and lessen freezes).
I am running CM7 from emmc and have access to all my Barnes and Noble books through the Nook app from market, if that is what you mean. There are a few children's books that may not work with the Nook app and I am given to understand some magazine subscriptions might be unavailable but it is not a problem for me.

All yours questions have been answered by others so I just chip in my experience.
1. If you run CM7 off uSD card, using Nook App will be much better.
2. If you run CM7 from eMMC and want to use Nook App, you MUST have an external uSD card plugged in anyway. W/o the card, it won't work properly.
3. Even with the Nook app running, I believe you will lose some features that stock Froyo offered such audio book?

That is not correct. If her library is of the books that she has downloaded from B&N that library is always available. When she signs in with the Nook Android app the library will sync and she can re-download any book she previously purchased from B&N.
Hi all.
I'm sorry first of all on creating a new thread as I'm not allowed to add to dev posts.
I have created Custom MTD Partitions of : 140, 5
using CyanogenMod 7 Nightly: 220
(New Market)
I have tried to download a game third blade and i get an error of insufficient space
like ''Hanakie'' in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233340
I have downgraded the market now to an old one and now able to download this game.
I am going to try tonight to upgrade the market from old to new but not a fresh install of a rom and see if if Im still able to. I will post my findings when done.
ps I would like to thank all the Developers here for for making my phone awesome and interesting til my next upgrade and then will have 2 phones to tinker with.
5mb cache is too low i had the same problem
edit: cm7 should move cache files to data/local if they are larger but this dont work for me i got the low memory message
Only problem I had with 5mb cache was in clockwork recovery, I always got an error as there wasn't enough space for it to write a log.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
I have tried these MTD Partitions: 140,5 140,10 140,20 140,25 and 140,35 with same results.
Im currently running at 145,45 as i know works great, but would like to see if i can get a little more space.
I like to try everything on here lol i love beta testing.

You were able to fit the latest CM Nightly on a 110MB /system partition? Did you go for a barebones build? AFAIK, the standard CM will not fit on a 110MB system partition. (Unless of course, it is stripped)
its not bearbone as such ujst took out all ringtones, all but on each alarm tone and notification tone and removed some of the not needed apps from the rom like email, music player (got power amp), cm wallpapers, live wallpapers u get the picture
hi 3xeno (thank you for your hard work)
I'm not using any Apps2SD any more as wanted all my stuff on internal memory.
i did a
1. wipe/factory reset
2. MTD Partitions Guide but instead of restoring from backup i did a fresh flash of
cm7 nightly 220
3. Then flashed gapps-gb-20110828 for Market

Hi.
My nook color was on 1.4 (latest bn update), I dual boot it with cm7 following this set of instructions - youtube.com/watch?v=OxDEZ1Fc6iE
when started, the android guy didn't appear and it didn't ask to log in to my google account. in the menu, there's no market.
went to settings - manage applications - there's no google service framework nor market.
I then rooted it instead with cm7 again following - youtube.com/watch?v=lmmmm8cBpe0
same thing, no google service framework, no market.
I've dual booted, rooted, unrooted to 1.0, rooted, over and over again but no luck. I doubt there's something wrong with the files, is it not reading/installing it properly? I downloaded the files through the right links multiple times.
since then, I tried all sorts of ways to try to download the apps but nothing works as well. I also tried installing the files individually (google service framework, onetimeinitializer, setupwizard, talk, vending) but it keeps saying "Application not installed."
Once I did manage to download market, but when I open it, it just gets out and crashes.
Is there another way to root it with a sure way of having market on it? or what am I doing wrong?
Please help. ): I'm not an expert with all these things so if you could explain it in simple terms.
So are you running from an SD card? Did you download gapps.zip and put it on the boot partition?

yes, I rooted from an sdcard. I followed the exact instructions on the video - (youtube.com/watch?v=lmmmm8cBpe0) Is something missing? Am I suppose to partition the sd? By my understanding, partition is something like splitting the memory on the sd? is it?
Sorry, I'm a real beginner on this.
Well the video you followed on Failtube has you installing to your internal memory. Did you flash the google apps zip while in clockwork?

Okay, I managed to install CM7 and market! I followed eyeballer's guide at forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227&fb_source=message through Koopakid08's link on his/her signature.
There was market on it and it opens. but doesn't start dowloads. I did the usual of delete the caches, reboot and now, it downloads fine.
I then overclocked it with www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mvwmx9qSZY guidance. not much of a guide but i managed to find the files and installed. but it overclocked to 1.1ghz, not 1.3. I don't really mind, but just wondering what I did wrong.. I'm thinking of trying it again but using the latest phiremod 7.1. I used the old 6.1 yesterday instead because I wasn't very sure.
So, now my question would be do I have to revert it back to cm7 then overclock it again? or can I just do it over what I've already done? or must I start from scratch, unroot, root to cm7 then overclock?

Go to download a rom to choose the rom you want.
You should install clockwork to your internal memory using rom manager and then you won't have to fool around with SD cards. If you want to update manualy through recovery then you need to wipe dalvik cache and then use the install a zip option. To boot into recovery hold volume up on boot.

Okay, after all the trial and errors, my nook color is finally up and running awesomely on cm7,phiremod 7.1 at 1.2ghz.
Went to rom manager - download rom - phiremod - v7.1 - reboot after that, I had to do gapps again because some files like market wasn't in the menu, but on the homepage. rom manager - download rom - phiremod - gapps - reboot.
so everything is working well so far.
thanks to all the help I received, especially koopakid08!
If you want to easily overclock your nook to the Max, along with adjusting voltage to handle it and adjusting speaker gain and other stuff, look up Nook Tweaks (icon is a nook outline with gears inside). The process is very simple, just make sure you install it to the device not SD (I made that mistake), because otherwise it won't set the CPU speed and voltage settings on boot (even with the boxes checked). I am able to get my nook running smoothly at 1300MHz, but the option goes up to 1600. So wherever your nook's Max is can be found with this app. No need to readjust your kernel, just install the app and go. If you want to make sure that it is working on boot, download autostarts, which shows what starts during boot.

True but you will not gain any performance by going over 1.2, only worse battery life and the chance of overheating.

Well I certainly don't think I know any better than anyone else, its just that I recorded a pretty decent increase from 1.2 to 1.3 when I ran a benchmark using Quadrant Standard. That's the only basis I currently have, but I figured since Quadrant Standard got good reviews that it was creditable... do you know of a better benchmark?

Oh, sounds great but I think I'll keep it at 1.3 rather than 1.6, I don't want it to overheat it or something. I've already downloaded the app and tried to change it to 1.3, but what is the CPU stepping 1,2,3,4,5? I changed it to 800, 900, 1000, 1200 and 1300. Is that okay?
