That means you haven't installed ClockworkMod recovery yet. First flash that via ROM Manager, and then attempt to make a backup again. I recommend doing it the manual way by booting into recovery mode, rather than by doing it through the ROM Manager app.

While you did root your phone you must turn off the security protocol. That is why we are mentioning s-off/s-on. IF you look in the development section you will see thread after thread after thread on how to do just that. Simply running VISIONary will not root your phone to the degree that you need. You must turn off that security protocol. If you don't everytime you reboot your phone it's going back to a OE fashion and losing Root Access, and losing the recovery image since the phone is flashing the stock recovery image again.

but thats what im sayin ive even had z4root and visionary but i only temp root not perm do i have to perm root to get this to work...? also ive re-rooted my phone everytime i rebooted cause i know that temp goes away after.... HELP PLEASE

you need to boot into hBoot and look at the top line for s-on or s-off. If s-off just boot the phone normally and click on Temp root, then perma root and your done.

hi guys i turned on s because iam sending this back to tmo. but i forgot to flash the stock recovery img and now i am attempting to root again with visionary. it says already rooted. but it wont give me permission. and the s is on. what do i do please help...
anyone...?
This is probably going to get moved to the Q & A forum before I can finish posting this.
I have yet to find an easier root process or an easier set of instructions to follow, than the following post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
Please read that in its entirety. This is such an easy process that anyone who gets lost or messes it up, might not want to try it in the first place. I'm being as honest as possible, not trying to be insulting.
Ultimately, S=On is part of the un-root process, soooo, you're back at scratch. This means you would need to start back at the top of that post above and follow the instructions on how to root your phone/get S=Off.
Good luck!

i understand BUT when i run visionary it tells me already rooted.... but when i type in su it says permission denied....
We're going to need some additional details. You on 2.2.1? Have you restarted your phone since and tried again?
I'll spell it out for you - it really is dead-simple...
(***paraphrasing the OFFICIAL instructions in the thread I linked to above***)
- Enable USB Debugging
- Extract the root.rar in the original post - MAKE SURE YOU PAID ATTENTION AND NOTICED THERE IS A ROOT FOLDER WITHIN A ROOT FOLDER - a nested folder. You do NOT WANT THIS. You want just one /root folder on your sdcard, within it at the .sh scripts.
- Install VISIONary
- Attempt Temp Root
- Run Terminal emulator, type su and follow the instructions in the original post to execute the script - reboot.
- When your phone comes back up, run VISIONary again
- Attempt Temp Root
- Attempt Perm Root
There is really no way to mess this up. I have done this on 6 MT4G's, so if it's not working, you didn't follow the instructions - no doubt, no question. You don't need ADB - you can do this all from your phone with a file explorer (I use EStrongs) and a terminal emulator (I use Android Terminal Emulator).
I'm surprised this hasn't been moderated yet...

What do you mean it "tells you already rooted"? I am rooted and just running VISIONary - that is, launching VISIONary - it doesn't tell you anything. If you click Temproot now, is that when it shows that?
You know you have to first do Temproot and then do Permroot, right? From what I've seen, you can't "over root," so honestly, I highly recommend starting over again. If possible, I would literally type out each and every step you're taking. Maybe it will show us where you're messing up.

I've been using r14 since my first MT4G and haven't had a single issue on any of the MT4G's I've used it on.

Thanks for answering, but I am rooted, I used the visionary perm-root method. I have terminal emulator and typed "su" and it prompted for super user access. I also have a few apps that use root, which work.
Root access alone is not enough. You need S-Off as well.

for short terms "s" Means security protocol. If your S=ON that means the phone will do a search each time you boot the phone on to see if anything as been tampered with. and if it has it will revert back to a factory status. Just like you first bought the phone. Which includes rooting, recovery images, boot images, engineering screens. What ever you do to your phone that isn't factory will be undone.
It is impossible to do. Because you need to flash the ROM from the recovery image. And since one you boot your phone it will replace Clockwork ROM manager with the factory style recovery image, you cannot not even get to the place you need to flash it from.

Correct because you flashing the Clockwork Recovery image will not STICK unless you have s=off.
They system will replace the aftermarket image with the original EVERYTIME you turn off the phone.
That is the Stock Recovery. You need S-Off and ClockworkMod Recovery. And the right release of CWM Recovery, also. Use CWM Recovery 2.x to back up, restore, and install Android 2.2 (Froyo) based ROMs, including stock, and CWM Recovery 3.x to back up, restore, and install Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) based ROMs, such as CM7.
There is a special version of CWM Recovery that can manage both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs: 3.0.0.6. Search for it in the Development subforum.
Thanks for all the information, I am slowly learning, and trying to understand all of this.
I am currently trying to get s=off. I found this link via google : ht tp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
I am already "rooted" I believe, because I have superuser access. Should I unroot first?
Also, in order to back up my current(stock) rom, do I need to use clockwork recovery 2.x?

Yes that method will work.
no do not unroot prior to starting that method

you can use the link i posted ^^^ there.
I will state this though. That link that you posted is the simplest way of truly rooting your phone. If that seem complex i would advice against you doing it at this point in time.
Rooting your phone basically turns your phone into a computer that can make and receive phone calls. And doing the wrong thing at the wrong time will seriously FUBAR your phone.
If you take a look in the Q&A section and the General Section you will see TONS of post with people in your shoes that didn't know what they were getting into and didn't take the warning laid out there.
READ READ READ about the android ADB before you decide to root your phone. And learn what everything is and what it does.
not trying to sound like a "Richard" but i don't want to see you mess up your phone either.

Isnt that just a video of temprooting and then confirming the root with terminal emulator?
I have seen many people with problems and they think they bricked their phone. I dont want to be one of them, and I've had a few close calls, and I'll tell you it wasnt fun.
From what I see ADB is just a remote terminal?
I appreciate that, and have taken the warnings very seriously.

That's kind of my point. People don't read.
If you take your time and read and do the entire process you won't have a problem. but you need to read all the way through something prior to jumping in the ring. There is a very strict set a rules that need to be followed.

you are correct in your assumption.
The HTC Glacier and Vision have a security protocol in place that will revert the phone back to a 100% stock fashion every-time you turn off the phone. If you wish to do custom ROMs, recovery images, and radio files you must turn the "s-on" to "s-off".

You can try the sh root.sh method.
1a ) download and install VISIONary.apk. Download from here
-Looks like you've done that since you have come this far.
1b) when you run VISIONary make sure both set system to R/W and Run Visionary.sh are both checked.
2) Download the script to the root of your SDcard
This is the file
3) Extract the folder from the .zip and store the folder with it's contents onto the root of the SDcard.
4) Download Terminal emulator from the market
-Link to the market for this app.
5) open the Terminal Emulator and type
Code:
$ su
#
The Dollar Sign " $ " should change to a pound sign " # ". If the Super user program ask for your permission, you'll want to grant it. You're screen should look like the box just above this line.
6 ) Change the directory to the root folder
Code:
# cd /sdcard/root
7) run the script
Code:
# sh root.sh
make sure you do not get any errors.
If you havent you can reboot into hBoot and look for s-off.
i personally used this method to root my phone before i left the t-mobile store when i bought the phone.

After doing the above method you're gonna have to reinstall the recovery from Rom Manager. Watch it carefully do not let the phone sleep (I recommend going to delopment check never sleep while charging and plug it into a charger while it downloads.) You have to pay attention because it will ask for SU permissions when it finishes downloading, and it for some reason only gives you like 3 or 4 seconds instead of the usual ten. If you have already tried installing the recovery you may wanna go to the SU App and make sure that Rom Manager didn't get denied premission which is the default if you do not select Allow fast enough.

Seriously though, some of these phones won't root with visionary root.sh method. Bad news is if it's not working you will need to try gfree method to root which is indicative of a phone with the emmc chip that is considered to be faulty. For more info search for the thread about emmc chips.

If your bootloader still shows S-ON, you're definitely not rooted. Here are two root methods to try:

TJ is pretty much hit the nail on head.
The "s-on / s-off" is a security check. If your "s-on" the phone will restore it self to a 100% new status, any recovery images, fonts, rooted apps, have been replaced back to a like new status. You need to manually turn the security check off. Which one of the two links TJ will do for you.
Then just download rom manager from market. Open it and flash cwm through it. That simple.

If your bootloader still shows S-ON, you're definitely not rooted. Here are two root methods to try:

Personally, I recommend the first one that uses Visionary and the root.sh script.

[Q] unrevoked wont flash

hi
im a complete noob at this game so plz bear with me.. i managed to s off my wildfire earlier with alpharev (cheers alpharev) and have followed instructions on other threads but i still cant get the latest unrevoked to work..it still asks if the firmware is new? ive also tried the older version which also fails to flash the recovery.
i used the latest superoneclick and it went through the motions and deemed that the phone was rooted but as i checked it, it wasnt
i have just used rom manager premium and it downloads clockwork to about 99% then freezes and force closes
can anyone point me it the right direction as im loosing my hair atm
thanks in advance.

worked a treat
kudos to you man
no need of shell root first. Directly hitting the root also gives permaroot.
And go with PC49IMG process or fastboot flash recovery process for custom recovery. Donot use unrevoked.
