So I just saw a posting from Ubergizmo on a possible Atrix 2 (w/8MP & 1080p) for ATT.
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/07/motorola-atrix-2-is-this-it/
Thoughts?
wow, now I feel like they cheaped out on the Atrix 5mp camera so they could pull this crap from out of their sleeve. Honestly, if the Atrix launched with a back illuminated 1080p sensor, this wouldn't exist. But here we are....damn you motorola, you aren't giving us 1080p, are you......
i'd be pissed because i just bought my atrix 3 weeks ago >_<
But does it have an unlocked bootloader? No?
I'll take what we got proudly.
Most likely not on the unlocked bootloader. Motorola is pretty strict haha
I'm looking at the images on my atrix... But doesnt the notification bar say china mobile?
Take a look at the XT860 thou... Its an atrix with a keyboard.... Coming to canada bell...

Meh, I'll take an unlocked bootloader over 3 more MP's and 1080p recording.
Hmm, probably just another superphone from Motorola that will be similar to the atrix and photon. I doubt they might call it the atrix 2 considering the current model was only released 5 months ago.
I'd be pissed if this was released, I JUST got mine haha
Hmm... if you actually go to that link, then go to the original article on unwiredview.... someone made an interesting discovery in the comments section. Between the Motorola logo and AT&T logo in the upper left and right corners of the front of the phone... you can make out the words Sony Ericsson.
Looks like a KIRF to me.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I see it! well thats good to know. But I'm not upgrading my phone for a while. The Atrix works just fine now and I have a XOOM....
No fingerprint reader?

As soon as we get CM7 on the Atrix - I don't think any of us will be caring about that thing
Looks to be a Sony Ericsson V611...
no way!! please moto dont be like apple who always launched better version of the device in such a short time. there are more to probe from the current atrix. keep the development going and i will sure atrix could beat its competitior
I'm not sure what to think.
Looking at the photos from Unwired View I can see a Sony Ericsson watermark in two photos. (I call it a watermark for the sake of visual understanding).
If you look at the first photo in the series, you can see the watermark where China Mobile would display after it would connect to the network. It's really faint and looks like it shows "Sony Ericsson V680, or V68(1)" or something close to it. There is no visible watermark between Motorola and the ATT logo.
If you look at the third photo in the series, you can see a watermark between the Motorola and ATT logo that appears to show "Sony Ericsson V611", but no watermark above/behind the "China Mobile" carrier text.
The watermarks clearly shift but I don't know if that's because of Photoshop or because of the lighting and angle under which the photos were taken.
Regardless, either it's a photoshop or just another crippled moto product. Either way it's a lose/lose situation.
I just got my atrix. Hopefully, they wont announce atrix 2 until atleast 2012.
www.droid-life.com has disproved that whole fake thing. The photo's came from forum that puts a logo on all there pictures.

here's the part that i don't get. Yes it's annoying that moto is so locked down, but it's not like it was any surprise to anyone. They have a history of it, a well known history. They've been working on the droid X since it came out, with about no success, and yet everyone that bought the atrix is screaming about how it should be broken. My question is, if you really wanted a hackable phone, why did you choose this one? You could have gone with something else, even if that meant waiting for other phones to come to AT&T. i believe at&t is launching something like 22+ phones this year?

I think that some people bought the phone because Motorola said that they would provide a solution that allowed developers to access the phone (these people are the "Good Faith" purchasers). I believe that Motorola said it first on their YouTube account (after the Motorola employee responsible for replying to comments there said basically what you said above but with fewer words and in a rather rude tone) and then again on their support forums where they said that they hoped to have a solution in place before the 30-day AT&T return policy expired. Motorola may also have said something similar on their Facebook page but I'm not sure.
Other people bought the phone because they didn't understand that Motorola's encrypted bootloaders have never been broken. They are the ones that say stuff like "everything's hackable", which may actually be true but is meaningless in reality unless you also include a timeframe and I don't think that most people want to wait ten trillion years for a brute force crack of a bootloader.
I, on the other hand, decided to wait and see what Motorola would do before making a purchase and so far it's not looking good but I am still hopeful.

I guess I should add another group of people: Those who didn't understand that getting root was not the same as cracking the bootloader but heard that devs had root even before the phone was released.

this . exactly this. when Moto said they will give some access to devs. i thought they are going the HTC way and not Sony way.
now HTC went Moto Way and Sony went the HTC way.
i mean, how stupid can these companies be ? seriously ? sony released the Xperia X10. a beauitiful device and early in UK. people didnt buy it because it was locked. Sony learned from their mistake. new phones? open for you to play with.
HTC ? thery were doing fine. alot of sales. nice devices. they saw Sony failing because of their locked ****. they saw Motorolla devices are not selling very high after they locked them down " thus, sales of new the devices is much less than the droid 1 " as far as i know " i dont have data "
how hard is it to understand when a phone has no community, its a DOA phone ?

i did. my only concern is about the screen brightness, from the videos i have seen its fine. i know its not a powerful device like tegra 2. but i am in for the gaming since i am gamer " speaking of which. i know its OT but how is the 3DS ? pass till NGP ?"
i think PS emulator and N64/SNES/GEn Emulators will be amazing on this phone and i will be finally able to have all the old classics on one system + whatever new games comes out will be fine as well.
looking at tegra zone specific games, i dont have much hope to get alot of games on it. and that difference in the games isnt even big at all.
plus the phone looks sexy as hell with its curves. and the screen is really pretty. i know its an LCD but for some reason sony screens look much better than a normal LCD screen, " and if the xperia play is SLCD, then i am happy panda "

I'd wait for the NGP, mostly because of a personal distaste for the screen tech of the 3DS.
As for the Play, I'd be concerned about a lot more than just the dim display. Battery life, an outdated processor, and RAM specs that aren't even really in line with last-gen tech all make it seem like one would be better off buying a more future-ready phone that's compatible with the Android Playstation games. Especially if bought on contract -- in 2 years the Play will be 4 years outdated. I was really looking forward to a solid gaming phone, but this just doesn't seem to be it. Now by no means am I saying the Atrix is the better gaming alternative...only that the Play has some seemingly unsurpassable issues that dedicated gaming controls can't make up for. Then again...until the phone actually comes out, who knows?

Now that Sony Ericsson has taken a leap forward which really is a surprise considering that they have taken a tough stance on unlocking anything. This would put more pressure to Motorola if they need to get a bigger piece of the pie. For sure Motorola is surprised that Sony Ericsson took a different path.
After all, it does make sense that if you have a great piece of hardware and you let the community take a hold of it, word will spread and more consumers will take a note and purchase it.
Guaranteed that ATnT is probably disappointed with some consumers returning their Atrix. I also doubt Bell Canada is breaking open the champagne here when across the store there are more ppl lining up for the iPAD2 than for the Atrix.
The ball is in Motorola's court. Time for them to make a move and less replying on facebook.

i don't understand why you need us to convince you to keep something. it's your own decision. if you want the SGS2, then get it. if you're happy with your atrix, then keep it. we all have different opinions and decisions. make your own, honestly.

Any ideas on a good place to sell the Atrix and buy the SGS2 (or the Samsung Attain which will be the AT&T version of the SGS2)? I'm new on eBay so I'm a little worried that buyers wouldn't buy from me because I don't have any feedback. Any other options?
Think about it, try out the GSII if you are able, look at the dev threads and maybe wait a few weeks to see what the situation is for the Atrix compared to it. I know I certainly will consider it if/when the GSII comes to AT&T.
EDIT: Only other place I can think of is Craigslist. If you post plenty of pictures and a detailed description, that will help.

This is what you should do.
Also the processor and GPU on the Atrix is better than the one on the SGSII. When the Atrix gets 2.3 it will do circles around the SGSII.
There are only 2 things that will pull me towards an SGSII
1. Unlocked bootloader (this likely going to be locked when it comes to AT&T)
2. Super Amoled screen
If those are important to you go get it if not keep the atrix. The dev section is booming we might get the bootloader unlocked.

I've got both handsets and to be honest the grass isn't necessarily greener on the SGS II side. Geez its a nice handset though, but I still believe 4" is the best size. I've found that the SGS II has a very plastic feel, and the back cover is so thin. I've been in a few situations where I've accidently sat down with the Atrix in my back pocket, and its survived easily, but I worry about doing the same with the SGS II. The SGS II probably isn't the phone I would take out drinking with the boys on a Friday night - I'm sure I would easily break it.
If you're looking for a speed comparison between Gingerbread handsets, it runs just as smooth on the SGS II as it does on my Nexus S (yes I also have the NS). There's no real difference between them IMO, (even though the Nexus S is single core). Where the SGS II shines is in having numerous widgets going and live wall papers at the same time - and although the lag is still there in momentary milliseconds, its no where as bad as the Atrix with live wallpapers going with Android 2.2. I think this is where Gingerbread shines though - and I'm sure the Atrix will perform similar when it gets Gingerbread. Its this very reason why, although I've been tempted to sell the Atrix as well, I'm prepared to hang onto it until it gets 2.3.
Damage wise, I've found the Atrix is easier to fix. For example, I dropped my Atrix onto my concrete driveway from low height and damaged the corners of the back cover - However, the cover was easily replaced by one from www.cnn.cn. As you know, the cover on the Atrix covers the corners, so when you replace the back cover, its all fixed. The SGS II isn't the same. If you drop it on the corners, you need to replace the entire body..! I'm not looking forward to this..
I think other than the shear size of the SGS II being a negative for me, I really wish the SGS II had qHD screen resolution. 800x480 at 4.3" on the SGS II is just bad IMO, although maybe if I hadn't gone from the Atrix to the SGS II, I wouldn't have cared. I feel I have been spoilt by the qHD though, especially when I view high resolution photos I've taken with my Canon 5D Mk II DSLR - on the SGS II, the sub-pixelation is a killer...
My 2 cents

Normally I would agree with this school of thought, but the SG2 is a $600-$900 phone to just "Jump into".
The Atrix unlocked is not cheap either.
It's nice to hear other people's input since XDA is a "community" that tries to help others.
Sure you can read reviews in Samsung's forum, but to hear it from somebody in here gives you more perspective.
Sure I've seen multiple threads about this, "and wish it was all in one neat thread", but if Motorola got their act together (especially for Bell users) this **** wouldn't be happening as much...

LOL! All I could think of was this:
“I command ye, therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors. You have sat here too long for the good you do. In the name of God, go!”
@cheetah2k Thanks for the great writeup!
Everyday to and from work, I think about making the switch myself. I've had the Bell Atrix for over a month, and have probably used it for half the time. My Motorola Milestone is kicking it's ass right now and that's not sitting well with me.
^ (still have a capped device with no Stock SBF and Adfree still doesn't work)
The only thing that still keeps me holding on is hoping that Gingerbread actually fixes this device, and that I get the "Telus Fascinate" experience again.
^Basically I had the same garbage issues with the Fascinate on Eclair, but Froyo almost fixed everything. Sadly GPS was still broken, but the phone was way better than before.
Last week I actually wiped my Atrix and almost sold it, but after reading about some of the bugs on the SGII it's bought me a little bit more time.
Hardware and form factor wise the Atrix is PERFECT, but it's like using a Core 2 Duo PC running on 98/Me. Part of me still doesn't trust Motorola, and the support on their forums blows right now, but the phone has so much potential in front of it.
If the Galaxy S II didn't have so many dead pixel units reported, I would have pulled the trigger a long time ago and pitted the 2 phones against each other. For now I'm just waiting for the SG2 to either come down in price, or Moto to give us an "official" timetable of when Gingerbread is gonna be rolled out (including the forgotten Bell units)...
+1 for cheetah2k, a good seemingly unbiased comparison. I think its best that I stick with the Atrix because of the things it still has that the SGS2 doesn't, like qHD and the awesome fingerprint sensor. Plus, it'll probably be a little while before the SGS2 officially comes on AT&T, so I might as well just wait for the next Nexus. Thanks again, cheetah2k!
system update is really a issue constraining phone's spec
I bought atrix just for it is the first phone with 1ghz*2 +1g ram
but I'm now considering to replace it with a next-g nexus
for it is branded by Google and always gets the latest version

HTC just announced a little over an hour ago that it will no longer lock any of the bootloaders on their devices.
Link to FB post: http://www.facebook.com/HTC/posts/10150307320018084
Here is the site where Sony Ericsson users can unlock their phones:
http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/
This is a quote from Motorola in regards to the locked bootloder:
"We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it."

I love the Atrix but I'm feverishly looking for the quickest way to get an HTC Sensation (willing to switch back to old provider if need be!). I'll gladly sell my Atrix to anyone here. The only way I want to stay is if we get an unlocked bootloader or HDMI mirroring for landscape mode.
I hope Motorola comments on this. I should subtly troll their Twitter.

Forget the Sensation man, it's Holiday time!
http://www.pcworld.com/article/228445/htc_holiday_specs_outed.html
Above link said:
The rumored specifications come courtesy of a ROM discovered by 911Sniper, a prominent source for HTC-related leaks. The exposed details point towards the device having a lot in common with the HTC Sensation. The Holiday will apparently have a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of memory, and a slightly excessive 4.5-inch, 540 by 960 resolution screen.
The ROM leak also pointed towards the smartphone running Android version 2.3.4 (Gingerbread), and having both an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera.
Further details regarding the phone, such as price points, are currently low on the ground, but some sites are suggesting that the HTC Holiday could be part of AT&T's promised range of late-2011 4G LTE smartphones.

Damn, I'll have to keep an eye out. I think I'll draw the line at 4.3", but the nice thing is that I'm sure it's ROM will be ported to the Sensation or Evo 3D.

Sprint got a better version of our phone it seems.

and it has an unlocked bootloader
and it seems new blur.. assuming gingerbread...
hope it makes to atrix sooner this month itself

lol. well i was mostly basing it on how it doesnt look like a prepaid phone.. unlike out Atrix's haha xD. and the screen looks great on it, etc
This is exactly like that "Newer than your device" commercial. Imagine our Atrix on a real 4G network like sprint's *lol* This phone looks amazing. Still LOVE my Atrix tho.

haha yeah. i dont even get 4g, mine is unlocked with Tmobile. im probably just going to wait till the Sensation hits big and trade lol. well if the phone doesnt get better (by ROMs i mean). surprisingly i do like this phone alot more than i thought i did. but i just HATE how it looks like a $20 phone you would buy from boostmobile or some crap. i havent seen any cases to make it look better either lol, also the 8mp camera it has
Somebody remind me why I even have AT&T to begin with?

Are you sure about that?
I really hope this means the Atrix will have its bootloader unlocked in a future update.
Also take into consideration that our Atrix phone has been out since feb while these are still newer phones are still waiting to be released...

For me, I actually prefer the stealthy look of the Atrix. I hate shiny plastic and I hate flashy devices. They just become status symbols that have nothing to do with actual functionality. What matters to me is what happens when I press the power button. This, of course, is just my opinion.
The only feature of the Sprint device that I find interesting is the 8mp Camera. Other than that, nothing that makes me envious. I think the Atrix is the perfect size and weight. I have no need for a bigger device. I am not saying I would not buy the Sprint version because of that, just that it is a slight negative in my mind.
To each their own.
More interstingly, did anyone notice the USB and HDMI ports are in a different location? This means you would not be able to use it with existing docks.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts. I've always found it strange, in retrospect, that the Atrix is the only high end Motorola phone without an 8mp camera. But, I dont use the camera much so I dont really care that much. I prefer the Atrix look, but then again I'm kind of a minimalist. I want my phones to look as generic as possible.

im looking at my Atrix right now and the whole is shiny plastic lol. tbh i think it looks more cheap than the galaxy line. which is sad. yeah and they dont get the laptop dock! i cant afford it anyways lmao. but i do take alot of pictures which is why its dumb for them to put 8mp on the bionix or whatever, and this phone, even the new droid.
The specs look nice.. if it really is coming with an unlock bootloader.. even better.. I would miss my fingerprint reader.. haha... but I've been looking to get a good global phone.. kinda makes you think this is what the Atrix should have been when it was release...
Oh well, by the time my contract is up, this will not look as appealing.. but right now, it does look nice..
Anyone know if the infuse has an unlocked bootloader? Will the AT&T Attain be unlocked when it's released? I just want to know so I can decide on what to get once I sell my atrix.
Really......they get an unlocked bootloader....
The only thing I envy from this phone is the unlocked bootloader (if the rumours are true). Other than that, the battery on the atrix is slightly bigger. We also have the fingerprint scanner, which I am thoroughly enjoying. The 8 mp camera doesn't make a lick of difference to me because if I'm going to take a picture that I want to print out or frame, I'm going to take it with a real camera. I can't imagine the difference between our 5 mp camera and the 8 mp camera on the Photon will be very noticeable for regular everyday point and shoot shots. Sure the Photon comes with 2.3, but we'll be getting it soon enough, and to that end, I'm sure we'll be getting an unlocked bootloader, or at the very least a way around it in the near future as well. All in all, the Atrix still has the specs to compete with the latest and greatest phones, and that's saying something considering the age we live in and the fact the phone is now almost 6 months old!
This isnt the forum for this but this is where most of the sprint users go (and the evo forum)
I've seen all the topics about evo3d vs the GS2 but nothing on the motorola photon.
the specs are on the internet, but I'm not exactly sure how those specs would stack up to the GS2 or the evo3d.
I work right next to the motorola building in Ft. Lauderdale and I was able to talk to some of the people working on the phone and even use one of theres for a second.
It was running gingerbread with motoblur (although this version of motoblur looked really nice, and they told me it can be turned off.
They also told me that it will have a locked bootloader
They said they were told it was going to release by july 31st.
The phone felt very solid in my hand had some weight to it kinda like an iphone.
I manage a restaurant so i kind of overheard them talking about stuff like getting stuff through fcc and all sorts of debugging that had to do with problems popping back up on them. It was just very interesting to hear because it sounded like talk from these forums.
I wish i would have got a picture because I cant seem to find anything online thats not stock picture of the device.
What does everyone think? Will it be a good upgrade from the epic?
Here's what people think bro.

Ha i know right
The Photon is not an upgrade from the Epic in any conceivable way. It has a lesser quality LCD display, weaker processor, locked bootloader (enjoy the stock rom and slight variants because that's all they get) and motorola's poor customer support.

I wouldn't be so unequivocal...
The Photon has a dual core processor, the Epic has a single core, plus it has a larger, and higher resolution display from the Epic. The guy who reviewed it from Phonescoop said the screen on the Photon is excellent, particularly compared to other motos. It also has the webtop software. As for the bootloader, Sprint will have to decide whether to let Motorola unlock it later in the year. If the bootloader does get unlocked then I personally would definitely consider it an upgrade from the Epic.
To the OP: it sounds like they are having issues with the FCC approval. That's not unusual. It's what held up the EVO 3D's release for a while too.
Had Sprint not f'd us over with the Premier program changes back in April, I'd be jumping from the Epic to the Photon on august 1st once my upgrade window opens. But no, no more yearly upgrade for one line, just 1/2 discount.
Looks like it is missing the keyboard too. Downgrade from the Epic.
No keyboard = not for me, but I saw the unboxing video online and it looked pretty solid. A friend of mine has a droid 3 on vzw, and if its ant indication of average moto ****, I like it. I do wanna see how they handle the unlocking of the bootloader.

I've been playing with it for the past couple of days, and I gotta say it's a really solid device. The webtop app is amazing, and I've been considering this phone just for that reason. All the different boot up options intrigue me as I don't know what they do. I'm not the biggest fan of the display as it's a pentile lcd, and I'm one of those people who can see the miniscule dots every time I look at it a certain way.
Also, I'm pretty confident moto will unlock it in time. I don't think OEMs can afford to alienate the dev community any longer.
Id say it has HUGE development potential, but sadly I don't think many devs will buy it. One of the main reasons I'm holding out for the within.
Which I hope, I hope, I hope, please god, give it a bigger dev community than the epic. I just might cry if it's left in the dust again by htc's inferior hardware.

Locked bootloader
There will be an update to unlock the bootloader, according to Motorola.
