[Q] Transformer ROM Port - Acer Iconia A500

I'm trying to figure out whether or not a ROM still exists that was a port of the ASUS Transformer 3.1 ROM. The last time I looked into the Iconia, there was no topic for the Iconia at the time and only two ROMs that I could come across. One was the Virtuoso Picasso and the other might have been PRIME, but I can't be sure.
I'm strongly considering getting a Iconia over the Transformer, but I would very much be interested in finding a port of the Transformer OS if that is still an option, or at the very least ports of the office app, weather app, and live wallpaper.
Also, if a ROM port does exist, does it support the landscape/portrait lock switch?
Thanks for all your help in advance.

I believe there a port of the Stock 3.1 build, but I don't think it is being updated anymore.
Edit: Here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121790
Turns out he doesn't use XDA anymore, thats why he stopped. Its on another forum.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. Not too sure if I want to give up the Dolby Digital, but I might also look into ports of the widgets and wallpaper just in case.

with Virtuous Picasso 1.05 iirc you had a choice, Acer, or Asus build, but it's no longer available. I think I have a copy saved though?

[Q] What's in the box?

Would someone please tell me what is supposed to be included in the Elocity 7 box when purchased?
Is it supposed to include a USB to USB cable? If not, how is it supposed to be connected to our computer (if necessary)?
I saw the following and wonder if if is correct (it doesn't mention a USB cable):
What is in the box:
eLocity™ 7-Inch Internet, Tablet with 4GB internal memory, rechargeable lithium polymer battery, user manual and safety guide, warranty card and AC adaptor with power cord.
Thank you.
Bobby
That's all folks!!!
Yup, that was all that was in the box. I actually had a screen protector in my box, but it got ruined when I tried to remove the tape from it. It was taped to the A7 to hold it.
I bought 5 bluetooth dongles from eBay - only 2 bucks each - and plugged them into my computers. I can easily transfer files now between all computers and the A7 - and my phones now - and each other.
Really there was nothing else in there.
I did buy a case....the USAGear neoprene black one. Bought it on Amazon. On sale now for about 13 bucks. Fits almost perfect. It could be just a touch longer, but looks good.
Make sure you do the upgrade to latest firmware from website, then Dexters mod 1.41 - makes it a great machine!
I have a bluetooth gps receiver coming - have heard they work with the A7.

What firmware update are you referring to?
I already have PBJ8000.2.0.0133.
(I'm personally not too 'fond' of the updates because they keep replacing apps I previous removed. And I understand every future update will do the same.)
The A7 need a dedicated dev to work on it, thanks Dexter but your legion is to motorola, was using Dexter mod but went back to the stock rom, have less issue with stock than with Dexter mod..don't have to reinsert SD or USB and It show the correct SD card size ..
Firmware update
I believe the latest firmware update is 2.2
It was out in February - i think the 24th, but not sure.
Anyway, i did install the latest firmware, then in order to get the Market place app, I "upgraded" to Dexters mod 1.41 so I could install almost any app from marketplace.

i never seen sdcard (external) reported in stock rom reported correctly or even found? i know it mounts it at /storage/sdcard-disk0 but thats it, for previous releases.. can you tell me how you see it better or do you actually mean internal storage, because "correct sdcard size" is fine here too?
btw(little OT),
for those using stock and want all the new gameloft HD games running, you cannot use stock, as /storage is not supported, it reports "no free space".
if you want to use the usb cable, you still need to be able to switch between host/device, which is not working in our firmware...
you can manually switch but the OS do not acknowledge it correctly.

The newbie on his grandmothers account is right.
He is naming the fw version
2.2 is the android OS version.
Not directly related.
Guess with dextermod were running android 1.41 ? Lol
Ya im looking forward to dexterbread 2.3 and maybe if were lucky even
dextercomb 3.0 LOL!
And in back to the topic, you only received the other accessories if you ordered
your tablet off of Amazon back when it first came out.It was a bonus package,
the only items in the box now are tablet with battery, power cord screen protector
and the paper work.

I can remember having some of the same problems with the droid 1 in the beginning but it got worked out and I am still using it as my main phone running gingerbread and can do anything that the newer phones can do and a lot of the things they cant. The ones of us that love this tablet for what it is and can understand even the basics will get a long and happy life out of the A7.

checked it already and its not complete, for compile.. and no details on how to actually making it compile..
tried to copy it on top of 2.6.36.3 but some scripts were missing, so its nice, but not really useful.
anyways A7 has different hardware, and is similar to the Harmony board (called naz10) where Asus the much newer Whistler board for their kit, which has more video mem and some other functions on the board we dont have here..
similar but not quite the same when you get technical.

[Q] Best 3.2 Rom

What is the best 3.2 Rom currently for A500?
There supposedly is only the
Virtuous Xoom
Asus Transformer-Prime
Asus modified
With Samsung coming out this week or next.
Thank you
The one that has worked the best for me is the asus one, the xoom one tends to lag sometimes

Yes it is.
I switched to prime yesterday and I doubt i'll go back to acer roms until we get a 3.2 rom for it. I like being able to see both internal and SD card when connected via usb. GPS is fast to lock!. Updated drivers for everything else....The ONLY cons are lack of the dolby feature (never used it) and the landscape/portrait lock button does nothing since the asus doesn't have it. That's it.... the pro's definitely outweigh the cons.
just make sure if you flash prime and don't have/want 3G to add the ro.carrier=wifi-only line to your build.prop to disable that piece of the os.

If you don´t use / need 3G, you can disable it by editing /system/build.prop and adding the line
ro.carrier=wifi-only
Seems that saves battery with 3G disabled...

Thank you all for your kind suggestions, though it is sad that many of the good Rom makers have either retired or left XDA.
Some of the Roms are very amazing and really want to say thank you to all the Rom developers to allow us to enjoy 3.2 before Acer has released it.
Fyi, there is a new one. A mod of PRIME 9. Using it right now and it has its hicups, but pretty solid.

started with PRIMEE-P9 David's MOD v1, now using virtuous xoom. in either case, the camera app is unable to work with the rear facing camera (i only get a black screen). it works only with the front facing camera. the lightspeed 1.0.1 doesn't have this problem.
i flashed my tablet several times, followed the instructions to the letter, still the same thing. otherwise i'm pretty happy with the 3.2 custom roms.
hi does the usb works on this rom? And im using it and its far vetter than anytouch wiz rom out there, hands down for this rom the only question can i plug in a usb keyboard or pair a bluetooth keyboard or mouse ?

Acer HC 3.2 really piss poor

I'm sure I'll hear differing opinions, but I see big show stoppers here. I've gone back to 3.1 already.
I've tried stock, custom, different kernels, and from what I can see it all points to that version of Android, not any particular customizations.
1. Dropped wifi connections - I'm not the only one
2. Something a bit more obscure:
The latest version of the email client does not allow you to set the port for your incoming mail server. While most folks wouldn't care or even notice, this is something that I require and has been an option available on 3.0 and 3.1.
3. Streaming Flash videos seem to just lock up on you at random times.
Realky piss poor job, Acer/Google! Ever hear of Quality Assurance, or are we your testers?

Two things:
1. Seeing that you have gone back to 3.1 indicates that you haven't used the ROM provided by Acer but by one of the developers here. So maybe the problems you are seeing with wifi might not be result of Acer/Google's work. Correct me if I'm wrong but the new recovery can't be downgraded (still).
2. Have you tried to set the port in the name of the server? Like mail.provider.com:25 ? I'm waiting for root for 3.2 before I update because after months of flashing my phone I came to the conclusion that stock is aways the best option when stability is a must. Maybe when Acer discontinues supporting the A500, custom ROMs will be the better option, but surely not now (in the mean time you have to be sure not to flash a unrootable recovery). Having said that, I don't know if setting the port in the server name would work but definitely worth a try.

What does recovery have to do with this?
Before writing my post, I did try a stock 3.2 from Acer. Nothing to do with custom or stock. I started with stock 3.0, just like most people here.
When I saw the port number issue, I went to Acer's servers, downloaded 3.2, and the it was, a missingport number inputbarea. Still there for outgoing servers.
I've been around the block a few times. I'm no newbie when it comes to technology, and I won't brag about what I do for a living.
As soon as you enter mail.somewhere.com:6799 or whatever your favorite port numer is, the Next button becoms greyed out. Just typing the colon after the server name does the trick, you don'even have to go as far as the port number. In the pervios versions of Email, there is an input box for the port number, it's gone missing.
The problem with wifi has been reported by users of 3.2 in general, meaning Asus and other brands as well. I did do some poking around on here on xda.

"My wifi is fine" - I hear that from a lot of people. Mine isn't. Ohters are complaining about this as well. Acer's support claims it's the router. Oh, come on, Acer. I have a couple of routers here, servicing FreeBSD systems, Mac OS X systems, iPhones, whatever a guest to my home might bring over, and gasp - Windows systems. It's not my router(s). And the fact that 3.0 and 3.1 work just fine, custom or stock, throws up a big red flag to me.
Emailing Acer support, or calling them for that matter, is the same as emailing or calling a brick wall.

I can second this: If you'd used 3.2 from Acer, you'd be stuck with it. Right now it locks you in and you can't downgrade. Really douche move from Acer, if you ask me. It's this kind of crap that you would expect from Mac.
As for your wifi issues, it might be a faulty unit like others have said, but I doubt it. I know the radio on mine is rather week (can't go more than 20 feet from the router). The GPS is also weak (only works on sunny days) with a low SNR even then. I suspect these two transmitters are underpowered on mine. I was an early adopter and I noticed that Acer had refurb units out only a few weeks after the initial release. This usually means they had many many returns. This is never a good sign.
The good news is that it is likely not a hardware thing in your case. If it worked better with 3.1, then you know that your transmitter is at least capable of a solid connection. If you don't mind losing root, try the OTA update. Keep in mind this is a one-way trip.
Otherwise, just stick with 3.1 until ICS comes out in a few months. 3.2 really is nothing spectacular; i wouldn't recommend upgrading unless it specifically fixes something you need.
Cheers,
-PW

Wifi Issues
As someone who has had the occasional wifi issues and been trying to hunt it down, I can say it almost always has to do with the AP, regardless of whether or not other devices have issues. I have about 8 different APs at my house that I have used to test across a wide variety of manufacturers. The biggest issues I have seen are tied to WPA2-PSK AES/TKIP support, and pre-N support. If the device is set to support both AES and TKIP I have seen issues. Set it to either one, it's fine. N has had major issues as well. Any AP I have tried that is Pre-N gives issues. Anything after the standard has been ratified has not had issue. It's not just A500 that I've noticed this behavior. I have a Moto Defy that acts the same way as well Smartbook. If you crank the support down to G only the issues disappears. Ironically the only device that I have had 0 issues with is my roommates Apple AP........go figure the irony on that.
---------- Post added at 09:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:16 AM ----------
Also as far as 3.2 goes.....I've noticed the only people that are getting the 3.2 update are the ones with Gen1 devices. I have a Gen2 and have seen nothing. Maybe there was a slight hardware revision?
I had really some problems after updating the device but after doing a factory reset all problems vanish.
There aren't different hardware gen versions by software update. The use of "gen" in the rom/update name appears to merely be some sort of codeword for acer and acer only.
Check out this post to see the original code lines for 3.1..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16061585&postcount=3
Updated it to reflect the various 3.2 roms that have popped to upgrade from 3.1. I still have not seen one for the US rom line that was up to Acer_A500_4.010.13_COM_GEN2.
Originally the US rom line was gen1 prior to 3.1.
If anyone was on 4.010.13 and got the update could you please post your software versions?
There is a version of 3.2 posted in the dev section that is the best bet for those wanting to try it out before a userland root exploit is figured out. It's version A500_4.010.41_7.006.01_COM_GEN1. The only thing done to this otherwise stock rom is root, custom recovery (CWM), busybox, and the new bootloader removed. This rom is ready to go and flashable from CWM which means no need to unroot and revert recoveries.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265847
We need to have a DEV work on the other codetrain versions that exist to have a similar rom posted for each section of the world.

No, I don't. That's my honest opinion and I stand by my words. The devs here do outstanding job considering they don't have the resources the manufacturers have. But at the end of the day, custom roms just lack proper testing. They do bring more features but if you read carefully what I have written in my post, I said they are inferior in terms of stability not features.
EDIT: If you have gone back to 3.1 you did NOT update with the stock ROM. Period. At best you updated with a near-stock ROM (with removed recovery, added superuser app, busybox and God knows what else) and in the process you should have wiped cache, etc. You are the only one who knows what you have done in the process and that's exactly why manufacturers void warranties on rooted/custom recovery devices. There are many with wifi problems you say, well there are also many that don't have them. The only way we could know if those problems are caused by Acer or by the users is to have someone that had stock unrooted 3.1 working who updated OTA with the stock 3.2 provided by Acer and started having wifi issues. Not someone who flashes every other day something cooked by anyone but Acer.

I am running the Prime 2.1.1 ROM and it's good. I have had trouble with the Revolution HD ROM (didn't restore apps automatically, Market crashes, some apps are shown as not compatible etc.). I will wait until the first ICS ROMs come out before I try anything new (e.g. the KRAKD ROM looks promising).
So maybe i play honeycomb and wait for the ICS roms to drop then cause that works

I have tried revolver, prime, and revolution HD for me revolution is the most stable and the battery is amazing on it. the only thing I don't like is how really stock it is. Revolver is really customizable rom you can do alot tweets but the battery drains fast. Well prime, I was getting alot of fc so I didn't play with it to much.

First off, make sure that you always make a backup of what you have working on the tablet. This will save you much frustration if something goes wrong. Nandroid backups are the ones that will restore a whole ROM for you. As for backing up apps with data, you can use Titanium Backup (requires root).
The two main firsts are that you should get it rooted (very easy now) and install CWM (Clockwork Recovery Mod). CWM will allow you to flash ROMs, make backups of the ROM itself and handle various memory functions.
Read through the Stickies in the Android Dev section, they will tell you all information you need to know.
As mentioned above, if you run into any kind of issue, before you post, use the search function and see if it is something that has been asked and answered before. If you are following the steps to whatever you are doing and you get stuck, chances are good someone else has done the same thing and gotten help with it.
Another thing to note is when you choose a ROM, look through its feature list, and if available, the bug list. Looking through both of those should aid you in deciding if that specific ROM or Kernel is something you want to use. If you get as far as flashing Kernels, make sure it is one that is compatible with the ROM you are using, otherwise the tablet probably won't boot and you'll have to flash a Kernel known to work with whichever ROM you chose.
Read thru the stickies above.
First thing you'll need to do is check the serial number on it and make sure you even have the choice of rooting it. AFAIK, most serials after the B60 series have a locked bootloader that hasn't been cracked yet. I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't read anything to the contrary yet.

Well that's why I said I hope I'm wrong and haven't read that I was. Are all TF's in fact now rootable?

You sir, are very wrong.
I rooted my B90 with razorclaw without a hitch.
This has been common knowledge around the community for about a month now.... :/

Just a month? Back when I rooted my TF we had to walk uphill in the snow both ways just to get the documentation on the process.
Anyways, back on topic...I use the latest PRIME! and I rarely have issues. Good luck when you get it!

You okay there Buckii?
Anyway, I would recommend getting the dock. Sometimes it is nice to have a physical keyboard, plus the additional battery adds hours of use time.

USB DVD-Rom recognized via keyboard?

Will the android os and tablet recognize a usb dvdrom? I am thinking of getting the keyboard down the road I just got the tablet and was wondering if this was even possible.

The rom is CleanROM Inheritance (msd24200 beat me to it)... It really is an amazing rom. If you read the comments you'll notice there is no one that has anything but praise for the rom. Sbdags is the developer & one of the most helpful ones I've come across (I do have to say that most of the developers in the TF300T forum are very helpful).
I'll have to give this a go my pc has a usb DVD burner... now all I need is a Android App to rip DVD's an app to encode and an app to run a usb tv tuner, then a steam client for Android and I can ditch the PC
I forgot to add that the keyboard dock is definitely worth getting. You'll find you use the tablet more once you get the dock.
Thank you for the help, I might wait to unlock it once the 4.2 is released. I have my galaxy s3 unlocked and will probably do the same thing on this, is it worth doing for the tablet?
wait is 4.2 out already for the tablet? Mine says 4.1.1 and no update shows
Not yet. We'll probably get 4.2, but I don't know when.
