Need help rooting - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to root my NC 1.2, and I've downloaded the CM image to write to my sd card. The trouble I'm having is that win32 diskimager doesn't read the files at all. I've extracted them to my desktop, and every time I use win32 to try to burn the bootable sd card, it doesn't even read those files. Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this? Many thanks in advance.

What're you trying to do exactly?
Do you want to root it and leave it on 1.2, install cm7 to the emmc, or instal cm7 to the microas card?

I assume your trying to make a bootable sd card to run CM7. Make sure you are running win 32 as admin. If that doesn't work try winimage to burn it.

[Q] SDcard issues =(

Hi there guys,
I have a T-MOUS LEO 1024 with only the stock 16GB sdcard that came with my phone. I really would like to try those new MUIU builds flying around on the forums, but I get getting sdcard is damaged you might need to reformat.
Here is my problem. i can seem to be only to format sdcard while its in the phone. I have tried reformatting with on android Os and win6.5 os...i still get same issue with those MUIU builds. my pc does not have a built in card read so I cannot you the Panasonic sd reformater g parted.
Is my only option is to have a sdcard reader for my pc?
any ideas would help.
thanks guys
Lawrance the Noobie =)
I was able to fix a similar issue by running the format sd card option in the android os, then booting to recovery and using the partition tool in cwm to delete the partitions and start fresh. I don't know that this method is failsafe, but it certainly saved my class 6 card from the trash.
Oh, and I am sure you know, but the increase in performance you get from using a higher class card makes it a good investment when you are able.

[Q] Noob...easiest way to root NC 1.3 onto MicroSD

Hello
I am looking to root my NC but I don't want to change the internal software. I have looked and read and researched so many methods and threads and I am more confused then anything else.
I need step by step clear (for dummies) instructions to root it onto the SD card.
I just updated it to firmware 1.3 and as i was looking for a method to root it i found very few threads on this.
Then I tried to downgrade to 1.2 and that was unsuccessful. Please someone help me. I want it so bad but i dont know what to do.
No need to downgrade. While I do recommend you do an internal install, it is up to you. Click the link in my sig and go to the SD install section.

Either your description is unclear or I have problem understand your English.
What do you mean by "root NC 1.3 onto MicroSD"?
Moving entire stock ROM version 1.3, rooted, on the uSD to free the internal space?
No. I want to root my NC 1.3, but i want to do it on the MicroSD not on the internal software.
koopakid08...this is probably a dumb question but im lost when i have to download the CM7...which one should I download for the NC..the ones listed are for phones?

Ok so I followed the steps to the T and everything you said happened but after it installed it shut off and did not turn on again.
I turned it on and it booted to the regular nook software. I formated the sd card and did the process again and the same thing happened again.
Did I do something wrong?

Try using winimage to burn the image.
If that doesn't work. Then I'm pretty sure it's your SD card. The only SD card brand you should use to run Android from is a Sandisk brand class 2 or 4. Other SD cards have major issues.

OK. I tried it on my sandisk and the same thing happened.
I will try winimage next. brb
OK that didnt work either.
I dont know what else to do.
You are sure that you are putting the cm.zip file on the boot partition?

I first write the image file on the blank/empty card.
Then I take it out of the computer and put it back, just like you said.
Then I open the card folder usually (j) and drag the zipped cm file onto it.
When that is done I drag the zipped gapps file onto the folder.
When that is done I take out the card and with the NC powered off I put in the MSD card and power it on.
All is well until it says removing the gapps, then it powers off.
When I try to power it on again it boots from the original NC, not the MSD card.
One thing though, When I click run as admin, it does not prompt for a password. It just asks if i want to allow the program to to make changes to the computer. I click yes and it opens up Win32. I select the file and the drive and press write. 5 seconds later its done.

Try just putting just the cm.zip, no gapps. That might be the problem.

Running cm 7 full emmc. Everything works fine till I reboot and my SD card wont mount without formatting. Its a sandisk 16gig not sure if size is the problem or I messed up the rooting. So used to adb rooting on phones this was a weird for me.

Did you format the card in Windows? Sandisk 16Gb are good cards. Used them myself. Pull the card and format with this on your desktop.
If you rooted via ADB you changed files (and installed SU) on the eMMC so the uSD should be OK.
I formatted in the NC it sees it and works fine till reboot only problem is I like to backup roms with clock word and it erases backups if I when I do it.

When u reboot does it take u to cwm clock work mod? If so...turn off the nook then take out the card, turn it on without the card and when its at the home screen pop it back in. Im going to buy another SD card because of this reason but not sure how to format it
HTC Wildfire S (VM) "s-off" "rooted" Stock Rom
Just format it in a card reader with Windows.
What's in the content of the uSD and what do you try to do with it?
1. Intention to use it as pure personal stuff?
2. Intention to use it as flashable CwMR card?
If 1., just reformat the uSD. Using Windows is fine. MiniTool Wizard is OK.
If 2., suggest to recreate. With it, you can make a Nandroid backup as well as using it to install/update ROMs/Gapps

Bootable sd card?

Is there a dummies guide to creating a bootable sd card for the Nook? I'm trying to follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227&page=61
but I can't seem to get the Nook to recognize the card. My goal is to root my Nook 1.3 so I can use the Amazon App Store. If there is an easier method I would love to give it a try.
Check out the guide in my sig.

I used this 5 part series youtube videos as a reference when I did my first CM7 install to run from SD. For me at least it is a lot easier to understand the process when I can see it.

Thanks for the reply. The instructions were basically what I followed but they do not explain how to make the SD card bootable.
Thanks Imbroglio I'll check out the videos.
My issue was my internal card reader was being viewed as a floppy drive...had to use a USB card reader.

You just plug your SD card into your computer open up WIN32DISKIMAGER as admin, select the drive letter of your SD card, select the image you have to burn, now click burn image. Then pop it into your Nook and bam.

The image makes the card bootable. You don't have to do anything else after the image is successfully loaded to the card.
1. download Win32DiskImager (older version preferred, r15 or something)
2. download CwM R (either 3.0.2.8 or newest 3.2.0.1 depends on your system)
3. execute the Win32DiskImager
4. Browse to select the drive (uSD) and the image file (step 2 above) then click Write.
Done.

I'm guessing this is my issue. I'm using a cheap micro sd to usb adapter. I did the same steps the others have mentioned. Seems like it should be pretty self explanatory. I'll try picking up a card reader.
Success! I had the wrong Win32diskimager zip file. (I tried both). With the help of Youtube I got the correct version and am all set. I appreciate the help and patience.

Great to hear you got it going. These folks are a LOT of help.
When I first started I had the same problems with getting IMG files correctly to the card.

Hello, I'm new to these forums and I'm not sure this is the right place to put this, but I'm wanting to upgrade my bootable sd with cm7.1 on it to cm7.2. I know there is a way to do this without redoing the entire card by just replacing 7.1 with7.2 but I can't find instructions on how to do that. So I decided to just make a new one, but when I go to format my sd card it days I have the write- protect switch on. I'm guessing it means the lock switch on the side of the sd card adapter is on, but its not. If I put in the other sd card I have, it reads fine. Is there something wrong with my sd card or is there something I'm doing wrong? oh and if someone can point me to instructions on how to upgrade 7.1 to 7.2 without redoing my whole card "i think using goo inside me" I would very much appreciate it. Thank you

Just take the existing card out and put in the PC. Download the new CM from cyanogenmod.com. Copy the new CM7.2 zip to it (make sure the name starts with update-). Put it back into the nook and boot. Hold the n key while booting until the boot menu comes up. Select SD and recovery and finish booting. The script will install it and turn off. Just reboot again. The new CM should come up.
By the way I meant to make my title in question form. Fist time to do this

First let Me start out by saying thank you for your help. I was confused about something. There is a stable version of cm7.2 but it doesn't begin with update. Should I stear clear of that one? if so do you mind explaining why? I'm always wondering if there are different roms to use for a bootable sd card verse flashing to my hard drive.

by the way, I'm now stuck on the boot loop. Are there any tricks to make that go away?

On the boot loop, go to my tips thread linked in my signature to learn more.
On the naming, CM recently changed the standard. The new ones now start with cm- instead of update-. Just rename to update- so that the script will install it.
And you use the same ROMs for SD and internal. The install script on the SD fixes it for you.
