Request: How to Update to Generic 2.3 from Custom ROM - XPERIA X10 General

I am guessing this might be coming from someone once it's released, but it's been a while since I played with my phone and I'm not that tech savy on the latest on these as things are constantly moving/changing.
I'm running a 2.2 Custom ROM and would like to upgrade to the stock generic 2.3 GB once it's released and I have no clue as to the best way to do this. So once it's out, if we can get a decent step by step how to, that would be great.
Thank you.

i would say use the flashtool thread in the dev section, flash a world generic rom and the corresponding baseband. don't root it or anything like that.
sign in, then connect to pc companion and see if the update hits.

Flash stock 2.1 firmware
update your x10 thru SE software

ensure your phone is rooted and xrecovery installed then wait for pre-rooted gb update to come out on here. It will be almost certainly simply bea case of flashing kernal and baseband using flashtool and custom update using xrecovery.
i certainly would not recommend flashing your phone back to stock 2.1 roms at this point in time - if you update to stock gingerbread then rooting may become more tricky and you may well have to go back to 2.1 rooted before you can get a rooted gingerbread - we simply dont know what security fixes will be included in the gingerbread update - so we dont know how easy it will be to root it once you have updated to stock 2.3

step 1. wait for the rom to launch
step 2. go to the gingerbread thread and read!!
step 3. read before posting the same question that's been asked thousands of times already!!

Do you guys know 2.3 update is out?

I'm going for this route as well, wait for a flashtools rootable 2.3. But i don't think it will take much long, the x10 gingerbread rom is based on the one SE worked for the Arc and that was rooted pretty quickly, no?
For those still with stock 2.1 i can understand all the excitement, but for me, i've been using a custom rom with basically the same UI and features for a while, I can wait a little longer.

They were only able to root arc/play/neo 2.3.2 they are still working on a way to root 2.3.3 so far no luck.

If you are referring to using an easy one-click method to root, then yes you are correct.
But there are other ways to achieve root on 2.3.3 which involves flashing.

Yeah, I was reading the post 2 above this one swearing & shaking my fists, because I'm running j's 2.3.3 rooted rom right now....2.3.3 can be rooted, it's just gonna be a little while before it's a one-click. That's always how it goes
Now that arc, neo, play & x10 are all gonna be 2.3.3, maybe it'll get the ball rolling a little faster on one-click solutions. We do have the largest Xperia dev community in the X10 section, afterall

We can simply "repair" the phone with SEUS. SEUS will download the last version for your device and install it automatically.

maybe, but only with an unrooted, unbranded generic 2.1 rom SE says to use PCC, which means it will most likely be available for SEUS, too (IIRC, they use the exact same database for the rom updates)

Good info so far. I might sell my phone (or lend it to a friend) and it would obviously sell best with an OEM 2.3 unlocked ROM which is assumingly bug-free for the most part.
So SEUS looks at what is currently on the phone and repairs it to that?

It reflashes your firmware....and it's saved my ass many, many times If it weren't for SEUS I'd have a bricked phone at least a dozen times over lulz

Do not apply PART2 OTA 2.1 update - If you need root.

I would like to remind ppl, because many of you didn't think about...
If you will apply, 2.1 OTA update, on your 1.5, you will LOOSE ability to root. Don't be fools, and wait until you get "official" rooted 2.1, then flash it by yourself.
Please someone make it more clear if possible...
...But 2.1 official cannot be rooted, after update.
So turn off your Update check on your phone, and wait until there will be 2.1 rooted.
P.S
Looks like there is possibility to downgrade from OTA 2.1!! Omg
May I ask why HEOR upgraded to official 2.1 OTA couldn't be rooted??
It is temporary unable or permanently??
Can you substantiate this claim? Proof that the instantroot method (using the package installer's privileges) does not work on 2.1 for instance?
@iholleh
It's not possible to root at the moment, it could be quite a while before someone figures out how to root it if its already on a device, however if its looked at enough I'm sure they will do it. when its officially released it will be rooted very quickly to be flashed as a zip.
good to know...thanks for hte info!

Thx bro! I just upgraded to 2.1 OTA and trying to downgrade to 1.5, failed however...
Wait for good news
I think we need to make clear. What to do if.
I installed the first package (First OTA, PART 1, Youtube App update)?
Like I heard in develop, if I installed part 1 update, this stupid youtube update, i need downgrade.
I don't really understand why, and how to do that. I think many of noobs like me are interested, what to do now.
I have promted by my phone that 2.1 update is realeased, and I did not downlnoad it, because I would like to have root, to install in a future Android 2.2, etc.
If so, and i have Firmware build number 2.73.405.93, or 2.73.405.94, or 2.73.405.95. What should I do?
Please someone, write step by step action guide.
(Downgrade, root, install rooted 2.1?) If so, how exactly?
I also understand that, there is 100000000000 of guides out there, but IMHO we need new one for a while.
Situation with "not installed" OTA part 1 is little bit easier? Normal ROOT, and install for coocked, and rooted official 2.1?

I guess so, but how likely is it that the hero's 2.1 firmware is different in this regard from anything else? A quick google confirmed that the InstantRoot method works on nexus one and motorola droid.
Edit: But a little longer google had me wondering if it does work on 2.1 again. Sorry, I should check more carefully. If anyone has tried it do step up.

What if I want to root it up to 2.2 (Froyo) that would be fine because it is like you are upgrading to newer firmware?
Hi i just have a stupid question :
i'm quite lost with all the stuffs about the 2.1 update :
i have a 1.5 stock rooted rom on my hero.
i would like to update to 2.1 but keep the root thing.
and i want not to wipe my phone
So what i undestand is :
- if i update : i'm not root anymore and won't be able to do it with the 2.1
- if i want to be 2.1+root i have to use a full rom (rooted) to have both but i have to wipe my phone.
Is that right ?
Is there or will it be a way to have an update (not wiping phone), in 2.1, and with root maintained from my 1.5 ??
Thanx for help.. i don't what to do with this ota update...

Best Rooting Method

So since as if we have already been abandoned by the Gingerbreak Project, what can you guys recommend to root my R800i without removing the ability to update the phone to higher Android in the coming months?
So you see I am really new to Android and I have little knowledge on unlocking bootloaders and the like that's why I stuck to Gingerbreak last month. Now that I have updated to 2.3.3, yeah everybody knows Gingerbreak no longer works.
I cannot consider reverting back to 2.3.2 since the 2.3.3 update really improved the battery performance and I'd still choose that over the ability to root on the 2.3.2. But then, bottom line is we really love our phones rooted.
So to cut the crap, anyone please recommend the best method to root the R800i (I would be open for tutorials) whilst preserving our ability to update to better versions in the future?
Ive not rooted or unlocked the boot loader yet myself as this is my first android device im taking it slowly but according to threads in the development section you can root and upgrade as long as you do nothing to the device before upgrading, root the phone then upgrade to 2.3.3
This means flashing backwards first obviously.
As far as upgrading in the future you will be better off flashing a custom rom if development goes well. Custom roms will take this device further than official updates will.

See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090. Follow the steps and you shall have root on 2.3.3 . I have also opted to "freeze" the bloat this time instead of just uninstalling it, in hopes that when 2.3.4 arrives i can do the ota update again and still keep root.
Also @ -josh- rooting will not damage your phone so its safe to root. I am also a first time android user myself but following the steps in the thread above worked fine no problems. And even if it didnt you can use SEUS to fix a phone with a locked bootloader
I rooted my phone when i was using 2.3.2 and found a good improvement.
Then i updated to an unrooted 2.3.3.
Ive left it unrooted for now. 2.3.3 performance is better than a rooted 2.3.2 i find.
It would be nice to root and remove the bloatwarw and overclock to 1.5 ghz, which can now be done. But for now i am happy.
Aside from a few Gameloft games not working, 2.3.3 is outstanding.
Not going to root until something major happens. Only reason i can see to root is to clock to 1.5 ghz to get n64oid working better.
Other than that, no point imo.
i have already tried the 2.3.2 root then flash to 2.3.3 method to no avail.. i don't know what im doing wrong but i think it's because my handset's a HK one, had it bought by someone in HK then i am using it here in the philippines. i'm not considering flashing custom roms either since i can't trust others' hands playing around roms, hehehe.. sigh!
You can are not supposed to flash to 2.3.3.. You are supposed to flash your phone to 2.3.2 uk generic version. After root your phone and through your phone you go to settings /about/update software and upgrade it there without hooking it to the computer. Make sure that your bootloader is LOCKED, otherwise you brick your phone.

Root after upgrading on 2.3.3

Hi,
I just want to know if with the 2.3.3 the root process is diffrent, or just do the same thing as the old 2.2.1.
Anyone as already tried?
funny story its non existent, it cant be rooted and wont be for a very long time if ever
I think you're wrong, cause maybe just needs to downgrade the firmware as usual.
But I need someone who already did it.
if you can figure out how to downgrade it, go ahead. But as of yet, there's no way to root the official gingerbread update.
-Nipqer
And how about the "goldcard" ? create one, and then install just lower version via recovery or something... I've read somewhere that u can install lower builds of OTA and then root the phone ... will that work? or i just missed something during lecture...
I believe that the desire hd gingerbread update has been rooted by means of downgrading. We just need to wait for someone to figure it out for us DZ users

[Q] we need rooted Gingerbread ROM (.ftf) for flashtool

I manually flashed my X10i using this method...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
but soon I realized it's not rooted after flashing and it's too late to install xrecovery or something like that. Something worse is, there's NO working rooting method for official 2.3.3 ROM this time.
We need some developers to make rooted 2.3.3 (in both stock and customized) ROM for flashtool so we can flash rooted ROM using flashtool without xrecovery.
Rooted ROM / Tools
I'm sure the devs will have something soon, if they have a pre-rooted install, it should not be too long before an exploit is found that allows the APK based tools to work.
I have not done much checking, are you sure the current tools (one click, z4root etc) dont work with the stock GB rom?
You could always downgrade using flashtool / adb shell and then re-install the 2.1 firmware, root, then install recovery / 2.3 pre-rooted....
Sucks, but it would be worth it in my opinion to have the freedom.
Otherwise, just wait, it should not be long!

Ah well, two options, wait for a tool to get updated, or roll back.
I would personally not bother, the only thing i "really" needed root for was barnacle, and wifi tethering is native now. With that said, you may have a use that im not listing (Titanium backup maybe for data), the choice is yours, its a pain to do, but doesnt take too long time wise.
Write back if you need a hand, im glad to help / point you to the correct spot!
Use flashtool and flash a 2.1 Rom. Root install xrec.
Then follow any of the mod/roms in development installation instructions.

After the first session done with xrecovery, I pulled out the battery and run second session to flash kernel with flashtool.
Now it has rooted 2.3.3.

PC10img.zip from Tmobile store sd card

Here is the pc10img.zip file that is available from T-Mobile stores. Make sure your phone is fully charged before you attempt to install it, the demo I installed it on would not install unless the battery was 100%.

Great, thank you! Not looking forward to reinstalling all my apps but downgrading again from 2.3.3 would have been a lengthy process as well.

I hold out hope that someone can unpack and build a rooted flash out of this. Otherwise, it's going to be just like the leak in that once you flash it you're left sitting around waiting for someone to do something...anything with it.
Mad props to the OP for putting this up. This should definitely get a ball rolling since we now have the FULL PC10IMG ROM flash version of the newest build/GB available for the G2.
Interesting too - the newest stuff (tp's) in that archive are 7/29/2011 - soooo fresh
Thanks for uploading this file. I updated my G2 last week. Kinda odd the update zip I used was only 73.1 MB and this one is 131.MB almost doubled. What is the differance between the two files. It seemed to update just fine from 2.2 to 2.3.4. Everything is running just smooth. Unless there are files and apps that I might be missing. I might give this a try again. Currently running 2.3.4 unrooted with S-ON. Still waiting for someone who can fully root the OTA 2.3.4 with S-OFF. Anyone know about the update zip that was leaked last week? Should I flash this one instead or keep what I have?

We already got a rooted flash of this we need it tweaked up with someone who knows what there doing. Seems we have little development for our phones anymore so I'm not holding out that it will be soon.

The update.zip is an update from 2.2 to 2.3.4. This PC10IMG.zip is the whole operating system. You can be on the first OS that shipped with the phone (2.2 but before wifi calling) and still use this file. To use the update.zip, you must be running the update that included wifi calling.
PC10IMG.zip will factory reset your phone.
Just like blink said, this is the full system image, the update essentially just includes the updated code not the entire image.
My hope is that this will help the developers intigrate this into their roms.

lulwot? This is THE first I've seen of the PC10IMG - full ROM from the T-Mobile store sdcard update. If there is a rooted flash of this please provide the link. Like yesterday! ROFL
Otherwise, all we have or have had is a rooted franken-build flashable mashup of the OTA and whatever other stuff.
Like I said, if you got a link to the full rooted flash of THIS rom, I'm all ears
Again - huge props to @atlp99 who made good saying he would bring the in-store copy ASAP. Well done!
PS - @atlp99 I saw your thread and it looks like they deleted it. Regrettably unless your posting CM7 crap or some variation of that or some Sense rom, they seem to delete new threads.
@RM, question, why not just delete the Vision stuff off xda? Or, alternatively quit deleting **** you pinhead.
Mirror!
Does anybody have a mirror download for this? I cant seem to download it from radidshare

I made a rooted version of the stock ROM. Right now I'm testing it, should be up in 20 minutes

Cool can't wait. What rooted version of what stock rom are you talking about? The PC10img.zip that we are talking about here ( I hope so) or the stock 2.2?

Sorry im a newbie..do i just rename the file PC10IMG.ZIP and put it on my sd card, boot up into the bootloader and go from there? I did that with the earlier PC10IMG.ZIP 2.3.4 that was posted on this thread..can it override that??

No no, what this is is a stock 2.3.4 image created from the PC10IMG that will not overwrite hboot, will not kick you back to stock recovery, will not update your radio and is rooted.
Just flash it with CWM.
just wanted to say this worked to upgrade the leaked 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 . you lose your apps but that's not a big deal
thanks!!! i had the leaked 2.3.3 and was gonna go through the painful process of downgrading then upgrading to 2.3.4
but this file saved all that work! wuhu!
What is the diff between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4?
