So the proximity sensor completely stopped working sibce I upgraded to Gingerbread. Well the little red light still comes on but when I put the phone to my face while in a call I expect the screen to automatically turn off but I forget that it no longer works so I end up pressing buttons while talking. If anyone else is experiencing the same issue, or if there are any known fixes someone PLEASE help. Other than that I still really like Gingerbread.

Sadly I don't have any help for you as I am limited in my knowledge...However, I used Kenn's 2.3.4 beta ROM a couple weeks ago or whatever, and I ALSO have noticed that the sensor doesn't seem to work properly. It works right most of the time for me (dunno about you), but there have been times where it screws up. Kind of lame, but I'm sure this is fixable if other people experience the same issue and someone is willing to fix.
Try fix permissions
I am also experiencing this same issue, worked before but not now. I have already fixed permissions...

Yes but since the phone has the sensor I'd rather not have to hit the power button every time I start a phone call. Then I have to hit the power button again to get to the dialer or other apps. Hence inconvenient.

I pull my battery often, my sensor stopped working shortly after I flashed Gingerblur a few months back...hmmmm
Someone out there please tell me how to edit the info in the build.prop. I see where my proximity sensor is at and both sections are labeled as disabled. Need to know how to edit so I can get it working again!!
I use root explorer. open build prop. make it r/w at the top. Hold finger on screen to open menu. scroll down to open in text editor.
edit: my current settings are below. and my sensor does not turn of screen. I think mine stopped working on the 1.5.7 update. hasn't work since.

I mean seriously, do you even read any of the posts before replying?
1) OP said he's running a Villain ROM which means he's rooted and modded.
2) Another poster running Villain can't replicate the problem.
3) No one other than the OP (and I'm assuming even you) can replicate the problem.
4) Who knows what the OP might be running app wise that might be triggering the issue on his phone.
I know I'm not a mod but these little "crisis" posts that start out as embers end up being raging fires. Maybe its because of all the different languages spoken. By all means, if anyone running a stock ROM can replicate this report back. It would indeed then be an issue worthy of the front page and the title "Security Flaw in our phones."
Just to add - I'm using litening 1.1, and I have an enforced exchange PIN.
Double clicking the home button will not get past the password entry screen.
Believe me, I've tried all ROMs and various apps to get around the password, still haven't found one yet.

So far I have found apps that force orientation all the time! I want it only for the phone.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
You can go another way:
1) flash the portrait zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084850 and uncheck "Auto-rotate screen". Now by default all applications will stay in portrait.
2) then install the Smart Rotator from Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.xdevelop.rotator_t&feature=search_result) and select all applications you want to be able to autorotate.
Im interested; however, how do I un-flash the zip should I decide I hate it?

Besides, the only thing the zip does (together with Autoritation unckecked): it prevents autorotation.
And if you want any application to be able to rotate, you just tell your wish to Smart Rotator, that`s all.
that's pretty nifty! might try that workaround myself thanks.
If you only want your home screen in portrait (not lockscreen) then you can use LauncherPro and turn off the auto-rotate settings for LP when your screen is in portrait. The rest of your apps will still follow the Streak's setting for auto-rotate.
Had the same problem and since I didn't want to mess anything up by flashing, I bought an app called Orientatiom switch. Lets you lock the screen in portrait or landscape. Made a thread about it here since I was so excited to see it actually work :-D

I almost forgot about this thread. I ended up using an app called Smart Rotator from the Market. It allows you to lock the streak into Landscape (...or whatever your phone uses for default) and elect which other programs you want to release from the landscape lock.
Now I don't have to chase the end button when I take the phone from my ear (in landscape mode while the phone is simultaneously turning the screen back on) and try to hit the end key while it is trying to switch to portrait. This seems to be the natural way my calls ended up. The phone is trying to do all those things and the whole process ends up with me cussing the phonewhioe trying to hit the damned end button.
Now, No matter what I'm doing...the screen is on Landscape, Period. Incidently, so are the contacts. They are linked to the phone so if you lock one, you are inadvertantly locking the other.

Hi, I'm running Slim 4.3 Build 1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393971) on my lcd version nexus s and really like the on screen buttons included with the rom. Is there any way to remove the back light from the capacities buttons and stop them vibrating?
Thanks
If you download Nexus S Tools from the Play Store, you can disable the capacitive lights, and there's a file somewhere in system/usr that has the keycodes for the capacitive buttons (you'll know what file it is when you see it, there's like 4 lines for back, home, search, and menu). What you gotta do is put a # in front of each line and reboot, then the capacitive buttons will be disabled.

To edit the file, download a file explorer (ES File Explorer is what I use) and enable "root explorer" then go into settings and make sure /system is set to "R/W" (there's a little check box somewhere).
From there go into /system/usr/keylayout/cypress-touchkey.kl and open it as text. Then put a # in front of every line that doesn't have one and then reboot

Marmite that comes with slim rom is good. I have disabled the back lights using that and nstools in the past. But often they would flicker if you touched them which bugs me.
In the settings somewhere you should be able to disable the hardware keys without altering any system files. I am not on that rom anymore so I can't tell you exactly where!
Ended up using nstools + disabling vibration

Hi fellow devs nd members of xda,
I have got problems with my Galaxy S4.. The sview is flashing throughout my screen without any S-Cover or any magnetic material. This happens randomly.. So I need to disable the s-view service and associated files.
I have tried the following :
1. Disable s-view from system settings
2. Renamed and changed permission for system/app/sview service.apk
I heard from another developer to change the value from OPEN to CLOSE in hall_detect file located at sys/devices/virtual/sec/sec_key. But I can't write into the file or rename the file.. The only thing I can do is change the permissions, but that doesn't help..
Does anyone have any idea how this sview works. It's become annoying when I play movies or games on my S4..
Many thanks

Have you ever figured out how to turn off S-view magnet sensor? I have the same problem with a magnetic car mount and it's very annoying.

Many thanks
AJ

Well people say just by removing the L1 screw in our phones under the back, the issue gets resolved.
There is one screw name L1 just under our cover.

Hey Man,
didn't work for me with my GT-I9500 and "The AirDock" still the s view lock screen comes on. Had that screw fully removed and had put the back on after that. Anyone other Ideas ?
Could someone upload their orginal SViewService.apk + SViewService.odex (both in system/app) because I have accidentally delete my ?

First Thanks for uploading your files but sadly I think I broke something because I geting only a black screen with statusbar at the top even when I paste in your files back in and this happens since I accidentally delete my. (before that black screen with time, date and so on)
I found no process or app or autostart that contains "s view" or something like that. How did find it and how was it named ?

Okay I understand. My problem is I can't find it (screenshot) there mainly I broke it somehow but do you know if there is any way to install a app back into touchwiz framework because when I try to install that apk it fails.

You saved my ass, thanks for that. After getting root and so on I tried to follow your instructions. The App was there and I stopped it but needed only one tap (clicked once ->Force Stop) and then stick it on the phone holder but again the S View Cover Screen comes on (with time/date and status bar). I have no clue what to do now because I can't deactivate the app even.
EDIT: When I deactivate the app per third party app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.SystemCleanup.Inteks.org) the black screen comes on without time and date. So there is any other process that start when a magnet comes close to the S4 ?

Does your dock have something magnetic??
A magnet triggers that stupid sview.
Use any custom rom that doesnot have sview. It shall get solved.

Yes, of course the holder has magnets too so yeah I know its triggering that view but I thought that view could be fully disabled without a custom rom.
A custom rom is no solve for me right now.
The Question would be how the S View got removed in the roms then I could do the same for my stock rom.
Found out that the Hall Sensor triggers that but found nothing to disable or something like that.
