I SERIOUSLY doubt it's been changed. Well the box should have it as well as if you remove the battery it should say it on the back of the phone, so the guy would have had to hard program it into the phone and also changed out inside the phone.
Don't worry about it.

Maybe I think too much
I'm from China. In China many 'refurbishers' specialize in these works.
I need to examine the whole phone and I wish I won't be unfortunate.

Check to make sure the IMEI on the back of the phone under the battery is the same one listed in settings > about.
Also if you got a box make sure that it is the same IMEI as on the phone.
If all three are the same it is very highly doubtful that it was changed.

x1i prototype?

I just recently purchased an x1i for what I thought was a bargain price. At half the retail, i got the phone in perfect condition and a charger. i didn't mind back then and have been using the phone on a daily basis and it works great. I never questioned why I just got the phone, seeing how adding a box and manual can't be that hard. I wanted to update my ROM to R2A today and when I took the battery out I noticed for the first time: "Prototype build:AP1" and underneath it "Prototype not for sale". So here's my question, is this a prototype and is it in anyway inferior to a retail model?
Thats why it was so cheap
Mine not say prototype....
But you should not care about that if it works well...And have no cracks
prototypes tend to have downgraded hardware than the actual retail
do you have pics of it? please show them! i'm curious to know if yours has a button on the bottom left corner.. kinda like the camera button but instead it's on the left side. iirc the prototype models had that button and one of the reviewers said it was supposed to be made for switching between landscape/portrait.
This is not supposed to be sold! I work there at Sony Ericsson, last time somebody sold a prototype version of a phone he got fired. This guy is either stupid or careless
Depends how old the prototype is then the hardware might be inferior (less ram). One advantage you have is that your phone is most likely "Security Unlocked"
Have a look at the back, what week was it produced on?
As for the person that sold it, they shouldn't have. It's not meant for resale!
I can confirm that anything above 08W25 is good
thanks
thanks for tbe info. mine says 08W26. as for the button to switch between portrait and landscape, it doesn't exist on my x1. The phone is security unlocked. I'll post some pictures up soon.
I bought a proto p990i, didnt know it was a proto. I kept it for spare parts since the firmware couldnt be updated. When I used any function besides calling someone it would lock up on me

Quite the opposite: SE prototypes ALWAYS have the final HW inside, it's usually the initial sw that's pre-RC - which does not effect him as his most likely been upgraded to MR1 at least...

Yes, it is a final prototype for operators to test. This means that it is probably someone outside of SE that has sold it.
It is not inferior in any way, but you can probably not upgrade firmware via SE tools. And you can forget getting help at a SE service location if needed. Some operators also disables the prototype IMEI number in their net after some time, which will make it useless as a phone.
Best thing to do: Turn it in to the nearest SE Service center with details of who sold it. You might be rewarded with a retail X1.

False. Login to to Emma and take a look - if you have a real proto with operator test release sw then you can upgrade it, provided you have access to Emma (you're an authorized SE service center, a SE employee or anyone with Emma login.)

False again. They will help you but it won't be free as it's not covoered by warranty - but again, any used phone you buy won't have warranty or max. one year - if it was retail - anyway.

My X1i is also prototype 08W25, and it doesn't have another button, also all hardware is the same as in final device. You can update rom to any in this forum without any problems, of course it also mean you can update to official R2A rom. I had about 5 X1i different prototypes, older and newer (with extra button and without, full ram 288mb and half 128mb and all can be updated to any newest rom available. But for this which have only 128mb ram I recommend R1A rom which have less ram requaiment (ie there is some problems with running some apps on R2A roms after few hours of use on 128mb ram device becouse much ram is missing then).
Edit 1:
Oh, and prototype devices have much better cover/housing, I have mine more then 5 months (and it wasnt new when I bought it) and it still don't have any crack on the cover!

You are truly clueless: these are most likely not stolen but sales samples, pal. Another newsflash: tracking users are borderline illegal in most countries (unless you have a criminal case and police/court/law is involved.)

FYI: almost all protos are given away and their owners are free to sell it later. (it isn't nice to sell it when it's still new, khm. )
Once retail products are out en masse most protos end up either collect dust on a shelf or end up on eBay.
I'm sure few end up being stolen but they are just like any other phone - nobody traces them down at all unless someone requests it.

Real or fake

Hey guys was going to buy an s5 from my daughter for Xmas off a third party, how would I make sure its real and not fake any help would be great cheers
Don't do it. If you must study the real handset and lookup fakes online. But seriously it's worth paying extra for a genuine new unit. Do you have a link for this third party?

If you had bought it, use this app to check if it is genuine or fake:
Phone INFO ★Samsung★ > Menu > 'Refurbishment Check'.
You should also compare the IMEI and S/N on the box, in the app and on the back plate (behind the battery). They should be all the same.
Also use a bar code scanner app to scan the bar code on that back plate, and it should match with the IMEI.

Hi, first just like to say thanks for your above guide to buying second hand phones.
I have another phone that interests me another S5 But this guy seems very genuine he said that i could check anything I want on the phone there and then. Only thing is no box it was damaged by his kid brother, seems like a nice guy. Do you think I would be O.K if I just went by your above guide?

so thanks again
On a different note wouldn't it be handy for truthful sellers and truthful buyers of phones to make a transaction without the fear of being scammed Surely in this day and age there has to be a way to do that Would a transaction through the likes of paypal not be a better idea? I just mean how would you get a buyer to give you the phone to run all these checks on it before you have even gave him the money. And then from his point of view how could he trust you with the phone without money, you could be doing anything to it, I mean is there some info on a phone that could be dangerous for someone to have? I guess that's why people say not to buy second hand. But these phones a very expensive a specially for teenagers so that is why its nice for parent's to get them for a better price then at least they can mess around with rooting and flashing I mean £300 is better than £600 not to mention bringing them to school they are so often stolen but hey that is just my opinion.
This website has good details about the difference between real and fake S5.

Topic closed! Got my answer. Thank you for everyone.
If you hand it into the police (At least in the UK) after a period of time, 4 weeks or something, it legally becomes yours if no-one claims it and you can go and collect it
Hand it In its being tracked
Not only that, but a local mobile network operator have no right to say you can keep a phone that does not belong to you, just because it was lost
Only the police can do that, and only after they try to find the rightful owner / give them a chance to report it lost and have it returned

Yes, I was dumb to replace the broken parts myself. But whats done, its done.
So. Can I use Google Play? Can I use WIFI or 4G?

Wipe data & system and install a new rom via Odin and you're done.
Wipe data removes 99% of tracking apps, wiping system removes the rest.
Use a custom recovery and delete everything than use a custom rom/kernel and flash modem/bootloader files too via odin

It is traceable via IMEI.
But someone who lost this phone (apparently it looks like this) and phone was bought on contract, there is huge possibility that someone will block IMEI on network provider. After that 2 ways left. Sell it to foreign country or use it w/o mobile network.

And that has something to do with him because ... ? phones don't comit crimes, people do. Let's say police was tracking a phone for some reason, once the criminal sells the phone it will be tracked for an X amount of time until police knows for certain the buyer doesn't have anything to do with the seller. Anyway more than 50% of phones out there have been used in... unapropiate way from prank calling to showing the latest vid of a gf to your friends (and you know what I mean by prank and vid).
Let us not make any more of what it is: a found phone, repaired, end of story. Nobody will come after it and if it does you can show the owner the receipt for spare parts. If he is as honest as wanting his/her phone back at least they can pay for repairs.
Just use it if you really wanted to... The authorities aren't gonna bother raiding your home and arresting you and stuff just for the sake of a lost phone. So just use it normally. If they blocked it then fine just use it as a gaming device or multimedia device. If someone tracked it then give it back to them and charge them the cost for fixing it. If it really came into accusing you of stealing(which has 0.1% chance of happening) then dare them a lie detector test.

An IMEI is kinda important.

Because if it was sold to you from someone then a reward might be available for the apprehension of the person that had stolen it and you would have valuable information.
Also, it is against forum rules to assist anyone in unlocking or tampering with an IMEI an any way especially for a stolen device. Since it appears to be that way, you're on your own. So good luck!

Certain stores sell these out if it's excessively supplied by Samsung. It's supplied by samsung on an entirely free no-agreement basis, since they are not expected to survive after the device reaches EOL (LED Burn-in, Customer Damages.. etc).
So the OP may not have necessarily stolen it, but may have obtained it in a clearance sale.
And of course, No. There is no reward involved as the device itself is designed without an IMEI so that the general public may not get to use it.
As all ready posted if it's a demo unit then basically all you have and will have is a wifi tablet. There is no IMEI number for the device and any attempt to use a different one is illegal. Really hope you weren't ripped off with it but as IMEI changing is illegal I will have to close the thread
