i got my atrix from best buy 3 weeks ago and i am still within my 30 day exchange period. if you didn't already know, the Nexus S was released today for AT&T at best buy (subsized $99). i know the Nexus S is an mildly inferior spec wise, however, with the plethora of ROMs available (including CM7), switching to the Nexus S seems very enticing. i know the atrix will eventually get AOSP ROMS, but i miss the good ole days on my Nexus One with vanilla android, CM7, etc. Obviously there will be a bias here because I am posting in the atrix forum. but anyone have any thoughts on this? ive read all the phonedog, cnet, youtube, reviews/comparisons on the 2 devices, but I wanted to ask the XDA community.
couple of points:
- hspa+ doesn't seem to be a huge issue for where i live because the max speedtest i ever got on my atrix was 2.9mb/s DL and 1.8 UP (running samcripp's ninja 4.5 w/ faux kernel and latest radio). im assuming even the 3G Nexus S will achieve similar speeds as my buddys iPhone 4 gets 2.8-3.0MBps in our area.
- not a fan of the atrix's color accuracy. samoled looks better to my eyes, despite lower resolution.
anyone that has owned a Nexus S or knows anything about it, please give me your input. thanks fellas/ladies

A friend of mine owns the nexus S and I own the atrix.
It's a nice phone with AOSP gingerbread (and many roms) but I don't think it's very futureproof which puts me off of it.
The source code is being released for atrix gingerbread on 7/29 from the 4.5.91 build, and when that happens, there truly will be an AOSP/CM7 build for the atrix within a week or two.
If you want a better experience with your phone right now (or for the next 4-6 months) I would go with the nexus S, but from an investment point of view the atrix is a far better choice. I enjoy it.
Atrix has dual cores and is more recent. Though that curved screen on the Nexus S looks nice

+1 in a month when cm7 and other roms are available your going to be a little disappointed you hadnt waited out a little longer and got the same or similar ui exprience with more speed and a longer time line in terms of being future proof. soon the nexus s will be completely outdated while the atrix wont
I own both phones. The nexus s is a great phone. Im using launcherpro on both with the exact same homescreen setup and the atrix is noticeably faster. Web browsing is a LOT faster on the atrix as well. And my atrix is still on 2.2. What i like about the nexus s is the camera. It completely destroys the atrix cam especially on night shots. 2.3 is also a plus along with getting first the udates that google will release. I thought i could use the nexus s as my main phone but still ended up using my atrix a lot more.

Honestly, i almost thought about buying the nexus S before the Atrix was released. But like they said, it's not future proof, single core(not the biggest deal breaker, but dual core does make a difference). The main reason i didn't get it was because it doesn't have an sdcard slot, if it had an sdcard slot then i would've got it, another thing is the Atrix's battery is the largest battery in a phone straight out of the box, sure there are extended batteries out there that u could get, but they're so big that they will pretty much double the thickness of your phone if not more which will most likely make your phone uncomfortable after a while.
But overall the Nexus S is a great device if your not too worried about mods/roms, but once these new firmwares/roms are released that require more advanced hardware or software that's not compatible with the nexus S, then you'll be looking for another phone, while a more future proof phone like the Atrix will be able to keep up
just something to think about

Cyanogen replied to a question about Atrix CM7 on Jun 26 stating that they'd probably begin working on it soon. This was right after the unlock was released. You can be sure that with the GB source release they'll be jumping on it both feet first, as they have CM7 for both the T-Mobile G2X and LG Optimus already (other similar Tegra 2 devices).

ANY phone lacking Micro SD, is an automatic deal breaker for me.
That's why I still have and rather use an SGS over the Nexus...
color accuracy on the super amoled displays is horrible imo. it looks like a tv in vivid mode
With an unlocked bootloader, the Atrix puts the Nexus S to shame. The screen on the Nexus S isn't my cup of tea either, the colors are sooooo exaggerated.
Not to mention, with rumors flying around of a Nexus 4G being released first for AT&T in October with Ice Cream Sandwich, the Nexus S will be a thing of the past. If you're getting the Nexus S in hopes of always getting the latest from Google first, remember how well (sarcasm) they treated Nexus One owners ;-)
Finally, honestly, pure Android experience is nice, but Moto does an awesome job (in my opinion) filling in for some key nice features. For example, the stock gallery app on Android is HORRID, it will make you want to stab yourself while you wait for it to load up new photos. Moto on the other hand, did an awesome job with their gallery app, more so especially with Gingerbread for the Atrix.

Same for me. How do Google expect to showcase their platform with a neutered phone? Ridiculous.
thank you to everyone! i never expected so many helpful responses. unfortunately, this makes my decision even harder. i am the type of person that changes phone literally every 3 months. i will be getting the iPhone 5(4S or whatever) when it comes out. Don't get me wrong, I love android, but I also have a hidden passion for iOS devices. However, whichever android phone I decide upon, I will be keeping. If we really are going to be getting true AOSP ROMS on the atrix in the coming weeks, I think I am just going to stick with it. The Nexus S just look so sexy though. ugh. tough call here. but thanks again everyone

I believe Samcripp is working on making Ninja SF into an AOSP ROM (already themed as such)
Plus, why get the Nexus S now, when the next one is rumored(?) to be coming out soon?
no point in getting nexus S now. it's been out too long and there are many phones now that are better than it spec wise.
like some have said, you should wait for the next nexus phone.
one thing great about nexus phones is that they get all the new updates faster than others. i held my nexus one for more than 1 year before selling it for something better. but while all the software updates are good, the phone eventually got too laggy for me even with launchers and other things running on it.
if you're getting an iphone 5.... i have no words for you
they are already working on a new nexus, too bad samsung is making it. ihope they change it.

The atrix is going to be outdated before the nexus s because the nexus s will keep getting updates before any phone which will keep it up to date. Afterall it is a Google phone and Google is bound to release 2.4 fairly soon and by that time, nexus s would have the newest update while the atrix would remain on 2.3 for another 4-5 months.

I love my nexus one and yes I was tempted by the nexus s but as we all know internally its just another random device out there. My question is when dual cores come out what are you going to do with your Nexus One?
My plan is to keep my Nexus One at home in the box as my back up phone. Ever so often take it out boot it up and flash it to the lastest version of Android it can handle.
Well I think the n1 is far from its end of life. The only disadvantage it will have over the dual cores is ability to run advanced games. Unless google makes major ui changes like how running live wallpapers made the g1 look more like a last gen device, then we are good

I'm hoping to use my Nexus for at least 2 more years. There is absolutely nothing out or coming out soon that seems like a large enough jump for me to justify buying another phone.

Same. Unless something awesome comes out on a really good contract. I do like the look of that LG Star/2X, and I imagine 'better' manufacturers will come out with their similar spec'd offerings shortly, which is why I have no real interest in the Nexus S.
At that point, the N1 will be sold for whatever I can get for it

See I can afford to replace my phone with the latest and greatest the thing is there isn't anything worth buying. I play games on my computer, not my phone so the Nexus S doesn't benefit me in any way.
I'll dump my N1 when something ground breaking comes out (dual core might be it but would need support for it) or when my N1 feels slow like my sons G1 does compared to my N1.
I'll upgrade to a Nexus S once they're free (or $50) on contract, and a decent car dock is shipping. The N1 car dock leaves a lot to be desired, but I wouldn't be without it.
I bought my wife a NS to replace her broken G1, and frankly I'm amazed at how much I like it over the N1. It's ridiculously fast and the 4" screen is a lot better for my middle-aged eyes. My N1 gets so laggy at times I just want to smash it, and I've never had that happen with the NS.
It baffles me why they can't release accessories like car and desk docks when these phones come out, instead of waiting 3-6 months.
I might give some thought to running an AOSP ROM on a Galaxy S, but with the G1 and N1 I've really preferred the bugs in Google's official releases over the bugs in the other ROMs I've tried. Right now my N1 has FRG83D+root and I'm looking forward to the official 2.3 update.

The irony is, that NS CPU performance-wise is about equal to N1. Hence it must be the difference between 2.2 and 2.3. Or you have some funny background tasks on your N1.
I dont plan on upgrading until something that's clearly a generation leap comes out. Im used to upgrading every year but haven't found anything worth upgrading to yet

I had the same problem with my N95
I dont upgrade every time something new comes out my upgrade was there for the g1 when it came out Oct two years ago. My contract went up in Oct of this year currently out of contract. I bought my N1 off of someone from Clist for 320 back in May. I figured since I have the upgrade why not use it and put my N1 in a safe place where it wont get hurt
In the current scenario , there's absolutely no reason to justify an upgrade . Gingerbread based ROMs will appear soon & I am absolutely clear in my mind that even honeycomb can be modified to run smoothly on our N1's albeit some overclocking might be necessary with higher versions of android . But thats not the case with gingerbread & Nexus S is a complete failure from my point of view as a Google Developer / Flagship device.
I am not willing to upgrade for atleast one more year .
Can I have one fact about NS CPU being faster than N1's?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I am eyeing the Motorola Olympus because of build quality and tegra dual core. But I would have gladly bought the Nexus S if it had two mics and AT&T 3g bands. I can't figure out why these GSM phones aren't all pentaband these days. The antenna chips are usually capable but they leave out key parts like certain cheap amplifiers that keep the capability off. It's really annoying.

the 1ghz hummingbird is similar to the 1ghz snapdragon in the n1, however the GPU is many times faster... for anything that involves graphics, the GPU will help out immensely.

N1 performance-wise is still on the very top of the smartphones. Yes, the touch screen digitizer is not perfect and the GPU is not the quickest in the world, but for the OS itself it is pretty much a non issue.
If N1 is not powerful enough to run the honeycomb, then very little of todays phones are (in fact none). Instantly making all of them obsolete.
Of course it is entirely another thing if goog will want to invest into N1 development.
No intentions of upgrading until maybe this time next year. Right now it meets everyone of my needs. Still having fun with it. The flaws most folks point out generally either don't bother me or I don't notice them on a day to day use. The only phone I was torn on getting was a G2 even that was more because I had a G1 and loved that phone. I rode that one into the ground. 4-5 warranty trade outs. Still have it rooted running CM as a protable game system for my 3 year old son.
Every phone that has come out so far has been slightly better. When it is time to retire the N1 it will be for something 1-2 generations better than what's available now.
I've always said my nexus one is worthy of a permanent collection device since It's nicer than most phones. Besides I don't have any backup emergency device so I'm gonna keep it in case of emergency backup device.
Normally I sell my device after 6 months for 50% of what I paid and use that cash for my next device.

Cars? Yes. I have owned almost 20 different vehicles in the last ten years.
Clothes? No. I still have some clothes that were "cool" in the 90's.
I've been saying those other phones dont come close for a while. The Captivate is garbage with it's broken GPS and laggy file sytem and Samsungs poor support. I returned mine after 2 weeks. The Inspire is nice but it's an old design with god awfull battery life. The Atrix is the best phone you can buy right now.

I came to the Atrix from a rooted, modded, changed, altered Nexus One No regrets here. Honestly, I flashed a lot of ROMs with my N1 and if I never get to flash a full, true ROM with this phone, I don't care. I like it so much more than my Nexus. The screen (I can see the Atrix in the sunlight!), the size of the screen, the speed, touch sensitivity, etc. Plus I live in a strong AT&T area and do not have problems like some do.
I would like HSUPA enabled, but from what is floating around here, AT&T is supposed to be "turning on" HSUPA at some point.
I got the lg g2x (ugly phone)on release date.
Since i was eligiable for an upgrade i decided to go with the g2x after reading all the reviews and specs i gave my wife the NS
5 days after
I miss the screen
How the NS Feels on my hand
G2x is fast but i havent really notice nothing really impresive
2.2 and god knows when 2.3 update will arrive
G2x camera sucks
Speakers are to low
Two Pros: 4G and HDMI tv output
Thankfully i got a defective unit (screen bleeding) so i will be returning my g2x today.
Should i get a replament unit or get myself another Nexus S?

The same thing happened to me...
I returned G2x....back to Nexus S
If you already are disappointed and miss your NS, then why do you actually need our "permission" for this ? Just go for it ! If we would've said get another G2x instead of a new NS, would you have done this ? I, for one, wouldn't have. So yea man... just go for it, especially if you already know how the NS is and feels. Then you CAN'T go wrong.
Wait for sg2 or HTC sensation is what I think I would do just cuz dual core more future proof IMO I do like my nexus but Google isn't what its all cracked up to be IMO
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The main reason I haven't got the G2X is because of its looks (Fugly little monster xD) but anyways, I did notice the camera was a lot better than the NS. Surprised to see you say it sucks lol. T-Mobile did say that 2.3 is not far away and also Cyanogen has been working on getting CM7 onto it which will definitely be 2.3.3
Anyways, I'm extremely happy with the Nexus S and besides a slightly faster phone with improved camera I don't see much of a reason to get the G2X.
I was going to make the jump to T-Mobile, and I held off a couple weeks to try the G2X. I was wary about service at my new place, because my AT&T didn't get any reception. I wanted to get something with UMA, and G2X seemed like the best phone with 4G and WiFi calling. Now that I've realized that I get perfect reception at my home, I don't need to stick with the G2X. After reception and battery issues with the LG, I'm welcoming the delivery of my Nexus S with open arms. I love the screens on my Focus and my old Captivate, so I'm really looking forward to Super AMOLED again.

God knows I wont try that again.
I would go back to the sexy nexy Nexus-S is a bad ass device, who cares about dual core right now, I would wait until "Ice cream" update is out, for true dual core support, and then get the newest Android phone out at that time, which will probably be a dual core Nexus-3.0 that will be first phone with "Ice Cream" 3.1.
So get the Nexus-S now and have fun. And upgrade to the Nexus-3.0 next year.
Agreeing with the one saying that you don't need our permission. When I saw the G2X I fell in love, but I knew deep down that I would't love it as much as I love my Nexus S. You see, in the future there will be something similar to the Nexus S, the Galaxy S2. It will have better specs, and offer the same development ( or similar) that the Nexus S provides( unlocked boot loader). Trust me, keep your Nexus S and wait for that xD

Take a look at the atrix section. It's all threads about no boot loader unlock, themes, returns, and problems. I liked my atrix for a few days. Then gave mine back.

It's a boring device, sorta how the iPad 2 is right now, since it can't be jailbroken as of now you just use it like a normal human being, which is impossible for me.

What he said. But even with jailbreaking a device, customization is still very limited compared to a Android device with access to root / custom recovery.
@OP
I thought the G2X was extremely sexy, sure it looks a lot like the iPhone 4 but the edges were nice and for a 4inch device it felt amazing in the hand, I also loved how the speakers were not on the back, but the bottom(which makes it a great media experience).
Still, I would go with my NS.
Why didn't you guys did what I did got g2x when it came out and also kept my ns so I can switch between devices whenever I feel like. They're both nice phones I think when 2.3 comes out for g2x will be a lot better phone than it is.

Well the G2X just doesn't have the same look and feel as the Nexus S
you see the Nexus S looks like it was the only device on the planet to run stock Gingerbread, the device is all black, and so when you look at the status bar it blends in with the body of the device. The curved display just makes it look so distinct as well, and plus you can't forget about stock Android. Plus the specs are really not that noticeable. Yes that beast processor is better but the multi tasking experience would have been about the same.
I am currently on a sgs. Is it a good idea to change for a nexus s? Or should i wait for the sgs 2???

Couldn't agree more ! Well said.
I just bought a nexus off ebay in random thought of upgrading my gf from her utterly annoying and pathetic samsung intercept. Now my problem is that I can't decide if its worth it for me to switch from my beloved epic to a nexus... Is the gpu better in the epic or nexus or same? I can live without the keyboard if theres something there besides ICS. Little help/opinion is appreciated especially from those who've had first hand usage.

I was wondering the same thing, since Sprint has the Nexus for free until today. I don't play that many games, so top of the line isn't something I have to have.

Its Pretty much an epic with more roms (ics, official cm7, official miui, sense, blur, ics touchwiz, sonys ics ui, and many more). Same gpu. If you don't use your keyboard much, its probably best to pick nexus.

Thanks, I think I'm set now switching from my epic My gal would rather have a keyboard any way.
Waiiitt, the Nexus S 4G is free?! Do you need to be eligible for an upgrade?
Edit: Never mind, I see you do. Damn!
wouldn't it be better to stick with EPIC for now ( since Sprint should be releasing LTE phones in 2012 ) ?
you probably should stick it out, but if you want to switch its not a whole lot different.
My friend has the nexus s and from my playing with it there are a few negatives that i saw:
1. camera always makes the pictures upside down, every picture i get from them is upside down.
2. no gorilla glass
3. no keyboard obviously (not a major issue but for some on here it is)
but the pluses are obviously android updates in a timely fashion and more support for roms. and its a little sleeker and lighter.
just my thoughts

Also:
No Micro SD slot.
No native 4G toggle.
Camera app is inferior and is limited to 480p on video recording.
No physical camera shutter button.
With the release of Gingerbread, the devs here have really managed to have turned the epic into a best of class phone. It's pretty awesome now.
ICS should be awesome on the Nexus and official support should be great. Just keep in mind the limitations of both phones. It's a close race for me at this point in time.
Stay with the Epic check out the Cyanogenmod forum.
Stay with the Epic and use your upgrade for an LTE 4G phone. Flash the latest cyanogenmod ROM. This is much better than the Nexus Rom the only downside is no 4G.
Stay epic!!!!!!
Whatever gets you laid.
Do remember upgrades are now 2 years not 1 so in 6 mths you will be punching yourself when they release a quadcore lte nexus lmao

I would keep both the Nexus and the Epic. I had the same problem with my gf's phone she had a horrible LG Optimus S so I got her a used HTC Evo 4G and put CM7 on it and she loves it. I know this doesn't help you but I'm just saying this because my gf didn't want to really use her phine to its full potential she just wanted a good phone. Maybe your gf would just want a decent phone?

Phone came today and my gf looked at it was like candy LOL.... with that being said I ended up activating the phone for her. I don't have my upgrade available till sept/oct next year so I'm stuck waiting for a lte phone.
I've seen more than one of these threads, I guess I'll throw in my opinion:
Stick with the Epic. It is still a beast when it comes to power and development for it is still continuing with quite a few people still using it. And it has a physical keyboard
Wait for some LTE phones to come out also. I for one would love to see a good (Android) HTC phone on Sprint again.

Since i'm one of the few who actually read the op and knows that he ALREADY BOUGHT BOTH, i'm not going to answer "save your money" like some of the others here...
Nexus S by far feels more "solid", I owned the epic until the release date of the nexus s and having used both extensively I really think i'm justified in saying that the nexus s is just overall a better user experience.
The keyboard for me was useless because of the dropped keys and I like the thinner profile of the nexus, not to mention both of my epics felt broken because of the sloppy hinge. The overall build if the nexus is just great
The nexus s is better ... But sprint should be getting the galaxy nexus soon... Why would you buy the nexus s thats so old?

Lol you get a pat on the back. The Nexus does feel solid and easier to hold vs my Epic, also 2.3.7 is super smooth stock.
Responding to post above:
I bought the phone as a gift for my gal to get her off a crappy intercept. I wanted a pure google phone and didn't care for anything else besides the Epic touch (which was priced far out of my range).
I'm so tired of people with GNex's geeking out over JB. Few people in my Android G+ Circle claimed it's a waste of money to get anything other than a Nexus.
Jellybean is cool....but the hardware is just not up to par with the new Android heavy hitters. I'll wait for the new GNex and decide on keeping the GS3 or jumping ship.

Jelly Bean is way smoother and faster than ICS for sure BUTTTT GS3's will be even faster when we get CM10 so I am not really too upset. Source was released today so we should have some roms within a week or two(optimistically).
It's really at your discretion. Basically Nexus is software, it's the latest and greatest and most natural google experience. You get a non nexus device, it's all about the latest hardware, better Processor, more/faster ram, better gpu, better screen, stuff like that.
So you want software and wait another year for better hardware or you want hardware and wait a few weeks-months after source is released to get the latest (buggy somewhat to a certain point) software.

I agree with you I had the GNex and it's a great phone, very fast for every thing. Except for gaming. Sure it runs 2D games good but when I got to the 3D games like Shadowgun and such the hardware starts showing its age.

Actually I played with my friends GNex w/Jellybean for a hour or so this weekend and I didn't find it to be any faster than my GS3. Slower at doing intensive stuff. Mind you I running a tweaked Kernel, JB Transition Mod, and Nova Launcher (which is waaaayyy faster than Touchwiz launcher).
If the new GNex comes with Key Lime Pie this year, i'd probably jump all over that. I just don't think its worth buying a GNex now over the GS3 or One X.
I'm on the fence. My friend let me borrow a nexus running jb he got at Google io, and my s3 is powered off. I'm debating returning the s3. I really enjoy the vanilla experience. I'm not a very big phone gamer.

Honestly, if you can wait and just run ICS for about a month to two months, we should be getting some stable JB roms by then.
I am sure the sgs3 is better then the gnex.
But I must say I love my gnex.
I use to have a sgs2 and thought it was great. Even after my gnex came I was a little disappointed. But now after a week of rocking the gnex i can say wow what a difference. I use to rom my sgs2, and run the latest buggy roms. But it always felt forced. The devs are great and without them android wouldn't be what it is today.
But the nexus experience is awesome. With jelly coming soon(offical ota) and the promise of klp I will rock this phone until next google I/o.
Granted my sgs2 was a cdma phone so it was a little behind the the gsm counterparts. And I love what Samsung does, but they are a little slow with updates or releases.
Another thing I would like to point out is the gnex(ics), in my hand, which is as smooth if not smoother then your sgs3 is old. I mean there has been 2 if not 3 new processors out since its release. I am proud it is still competing with the newest hardware.
There are some things I wish were better, camera to name one. But still this thing is smooth and sips battery compared to my sgs2 with a Rom of ics.
As far as 3d games go, I don't game on my phone, that's what tablets are for.
Oh and this thing was only $350 sans contact. Now I only pay $45 a month for unlimited everything.

sure we'll have to wait, but since we all have top-tier phones, we should all get decent update support from samsung. I'm sure this was part of the reason to release one model in the us (and almost the same model overseas). I prefer better hardware over quicker updates. Besides once cm10 gets going on our devices, it won't matter much. CM10 gs3 vs cm10 gnex, the gs3 will win in a landslide.

The S III will get JB or CM10 sooner than later with all the dev support for it. Once that happens, it won't even be a contest.
Even with the wait, lets look at these major advantages for the S III.
***Expandable memory*** (this is HUGE)
2gb of ram vs 1gb
Superior GPU
Bigger battery
Yes, since the S III isn't a Nexus device we won't always get the latest and greatest first. But given the hardware and dev support, I wouldn't hesitate to get the S III over the Nexus again.
It'll be a different story once the next Nexus comes out, but that won't be for awhile. I thought about waiting, but the current GSM Nexus didn't come out until April. I don't think the next unlocked GSM Nexus will come out until early 2013 which is a long time from now. I'd rather enjoy my S III and wait for CM10 and enjoy the phone here and now.

International sgs3 + official cm = win ... Nothing beats that combo.
I have yet to meet a 3D game that lags on my GNex. Come to think of it, I can't think of any apps an S3 can run that I can't. BTW, Jellybean is awesome

The Galaxy Nexus was released November of last year (I bought the GSM unlocked when it came out). The next Nexus will most likely be released 4th quarter of this year. That said, I initially told myself I'd wait until the next Nexus to buy another phone, but the GS3 was a little too tempting so I made the leap. I still have my Nexus though, but I'll probably be selling it this week, and pre-ordering the Nexus 7.

Yup. No point getting current GNex.
I've had the GNex for a while now and I wasn't expecting to be as impressed with the S3 as I have been, during the short period of time that I have had it.
Most everybody knows the strong and weak points of the GNex by now, so I'm just going list the areas where I think the s3 really outclasses it. First off battery life, battery life, battery life! Yeah I said that three times. The reason is because I literally get about three times the battery length that I got with the GNex, with essentially the same size battery. I don't get it at all but I am getting crazy battery life, even with the screen cranked up to about 75% brightness, when I used to leave the GNex on auto brightness. This alone is enough of an advantage to recommend the S3. On top of this the S3 also has a considerably better processor, an sd card slot, better build quality, much better camera, much better speakers, and seems to get a better signal as well.
I love the GNex for many reasons, I don't plan on selling it as I will probably still activate it from time to time, but I don't think that there is any question about which is a better everyday phone. I even like a lot of the features of touchwiz, the overall look of the UI is pretty much hideous in my opinion though. I hope to be able to run a touchwiz based rom that is themed like aosp, with on screen buttons some time in the near future. I think that I could be thoroughly satisfied with that for a long time.
