Hi guys, I'm a stock rom user and I've getting bored of my current screen. It looks like stock rom has less themes. And after I've go thru the theme's topic in this forum, CM7 has really attracted me with it's beautiful theme. I would like to change to CM7 and I have few question to ask before I'd really change it =)
- I heard that CM has a bug of, showing all the contacts in numbers instead of name. Is this true? Or has it fixed? Can someone list me the bugs of CM?
- Is it available to use the market app that I'm using now? If i used Mybackup to backup my phone, after I have turn it into CM, can I download back the Mybackup and then restore my things?
- What are the other features can be found on CM7? Can it overclock too?
Please provide me other relavent infos that I need to know before I turning my wildfire into CM7.
Thanks a thousand
OK to answer your question about bugs. I'm on the RC1 and haven't found any! Everything works perfectly! If you find anything let them know and it might be fixed in a nightly.
Yes you can download mybackup and then restore all your apps! I use titanium backup as it has more features but mybackup works just as well.
Other features: Loads!!! Basically everything is configurable!
When you asked if it can overclock, all ROMS can be overclocked, however you must first install an overclock kernal like HCDR.Jacob 4.1 which I use.
Hope I've been of help, if you've now got any more questions stick them below!
Things to know about before changing is that you CAN'T get any HTC apps on it, and that's really it!
Also CM doesn't have an FM radio. Don't know if Jacob will add it in the future.
first of all, thanks to djdevine2 and imlgl for the reply. much appreciated =).
@djdevine2
what do you mean by "Things to know about before changing is that you CAN'T get any HTC apps on it, and that's really it!"? only HTC apps but on the apps on the market right? what is an example of HTC apps? Htc Sense?
titanium backups can backup contacts also? i dont mind about apps, the most important thing for me is my contacts. i couldnt afford to lose any of it.
what do you mean by RC1?
@imlgl
i see no radio huh. but what does that radio worked as? I think it's not referring to the FM AM broadcast radio right?
and yeah if anyone has the full thread of installing CM7 and all the relevent stuffs, please provide me also?
I can't wait to try it out already X).
thank you very much!

Yeah, you can't install HTC apps like the HTC Camera or the HTC FM radio or the sense launcher. No titanium backup doesn't do contacts but when I created contacts I created them on google so I just log in and they're downloaded straight away.
RC1 is the best version of CM7 at the moment in terms of things working.
Answering your question to @IMLGL by radio they mean the FM radio, it will NOT work in CM7 but you can download apps that let you stream it so it's not much of a problem!
Are you rooted? I can guide you to it if you need it or I can go straight to CM7!
I'm sure you'll like CM7!
CM7 is pretty good.

Ummm Titanium Backup does do contacts. And SMS, and Calendar, etc, but it probably wont work as its moving from HTC to AOSP ROM.
Cyanogenmod.com has a wiki that details the install process, and also their own forum.
I have found a few bugs, mostly minor though and safely ignored. One that comes to mind is that when trackball centre is assigned to screen-on, it sometimes does nothing. CM7 is freakin' awesome, and so fast. Gameboid runs full speed when holding down screen unlike other rom's. And gingerbread is such an improvement! I especially love the customization in the Notifications button widget... best access to music controls when in another app!
Edit: just do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. If the new one doesn't work out, restore nandroid and no harm done

My nandroid bootlooped once, that was fun =D
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Could you elaborate on that? I.e. how you overcame it, and what you did wrong? It's not very nice trying to scare people for no reason. I have never had a nandroid restore cause a bootloop.
Hahaha i'm not trying to scare them, it just happened. I don't know why :S, after formatting my sd card, repartitioning it and putting everything back, it was all fine. it happened when i tried to upgrade wildpuzzle, LOL.
Well yes, you should always format the swap partition (if you have one) and also do a full wipe/factory reset to erase the .android_secure folder before restoring from a nandroid backup (all under Clockworkmod). Recovery is known to be quite buggy on the Wildfire, though it's mainly with the ADB server.
@djdevine2
hey there. couldnt install htc camera, but there are others camera apps on market right?
maybe you can list me a list of apps that i should get after i change to CM7 TONIGHT<< .
my phone is rooted! android 2.2 rooted. so how do i start now?
@jonusc
hey there. =). so titanium backup is out, and then does nandroid backup contacts too? i've used mybackup and it worked quite well. so if no other suitable backup apps i guess i will just stick to it?
@kevin2516
huh huh that will encounter errors too? how often does that happen on people who did the same thing like you?
It was a rare occurrence, only happened like once or twice. But it really doesn't bother me since i'm used to flashing and restoring apps with titanium backup only takes like 20-30min. (i don't have over 100 billion apps i want) ;D

I can't tell you what apps you'll like or find useful! But I like overclock widget for overclocking and LCD density is quite cool!
I have bought MyBackup Pro, I may try it. I had a problem with TB, I backed up everything in CM7 and reinstalled fresh, but it does not restore Widgets for ADWLauncher properly
Nandroid is very different to MyBackup/TB. It takes a complete 1:1 image of your phone. Yes it does do contacts, but you cannot restore those contacts individually - you use nandroid as a complete ROM restore. Before you edit your firmware, Nandroid is used as a backup incase you want to revert. It has no use for migrating across rom's, but is the best and only way for an exact entire backup.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using Tapatalk
actually i've found the best way to backup contacts!
just go into the phone/contacts there, press menu, export to sd card and thats done! done perfectly!
and for notes backup, i suggest you all to use OnePunchNotes. It can backup either automatically or manually, then restore it even with password. This is the best notes app that I've found so far.
for the apps i dont really care i can download it again =).
Im in CM7 now, the GUI is awesome!!!!!!! makes my phone so fresh
but just one problem, sometimes the apps will get force closed and hang, anyone knows why?
p/s: the kernal for overclock is same as stock rom? what what jacob?
Force close AND hang? They are both completely different things. Which one is it? I get no FC's, if you do try a permissions repair in ROM manager.
If you mean hanging, yes I get this too but only within first few minutes of booting up. Just press Wait and let it finish, pressing Close will make it take even longer to load. Remember that this is RC, it is still in testing stages, so there's nothing you can do except wait for a new version.
Yes, Jacob's HDCR kernel is already in CM7. It is probably best to stick with it too instead of flashing the generic one.
Under performance settings, using a 32mb heap and enabling JIT may help with hanging. Also, switching off dithering definitely helps reduce hanging. It also seems to make my emulators faster
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using Tapatalk
so means that i can directly install SetCPU into it right? I see.
And 1 more thing, the video keeps hang, do you know why? When i start play the video then after 3 secs it hanged =(
I don't know for sure cause I don't have a Wildfire myself, but in cm7 you can change the CPU speed in Settings - CyanogenMod settings - Performance - CPU settings
it force closed =(
i'm really getting tired of redoing my info every time i try a new rom... i know froyo is supposed to be able to back up user info but it seems we dont' get that option from sammy. i always back up my apps with titanium but what about the contact list, phone settings, passwords, bookmarks, etc... something that would transfer between roms
mybackup root.
Umm...nandroid? Do a backup and flash rom, then do a selective restore and only restore data. works everytime for me except when downgrading gingerbread back to froyo. Other than that I occasionally use mybackup root

No but just keep a copy on your sd card. It's the one exception.
I know its a pain but a fresh Install us always the best. I use an app called "appbak" and its so easy. U backup your apps and its just like a text file. Then u restore them and it gives you all your Apps in a list. U for down the list one by one and when you click on the app it will take u directly to that app in the market. Then u just download it. Its pretty fast and it gives u a fresh Install. Then ill use titanium to restore some data for some if my apps.

I haven't found a good way around having to enter my gmail account info each time (especially since I've been going back and forth between froyo and GB roms so nandroid backup isn't a good option) but I do keep my contacts organized in gmail, not on the phone, so whenever I do flash a new rom, it just automatically syncs the contacts and I never have to worry about them.
Titanium backup is the best for me.

My Backup wouldn't restore the last backup I made with it, even though the files on the SDcard were fine.
I've switched to Titanium root and it's been reliable so far.
titanium backup pro works. It might restore some older not needed apps but you can take them out later. You can take out any app or info even system apps, info, data.

My Backup has never successfully restored anything for me. Titanium has been perfect and I've been using it since I got this phone nearly a year ago, though it doesn't do SMS so I also use SMS Backup & Restore, a little freebie from the market which so far has worked well (though I've only tried it a few times).
I agree, Titanium Pro works great. I too also use SMS Backup & Restore for text messages.
Clockwork Mod does all that and then some. Just do a backup in clockwork, install new rom, go back into clockwork/backup&restore/ advanced restore/ and restore data only. It will restore all contacts/texts/picture mail/logins/passwords/apps+app data, etc, all data that doesnt interfere with the new rom.
?= Question Not Yet Answered √=Question Answered, Thanks!
Been rooted for quite awhile now, but stuck with stock 2.2.1 at first. Now I'm ready to flash CM7, mostly because I'm sick of certain bugs and issues I've been having that I hope this will fix, and I have many questions. I have spent weeks reading various forums, reviews, instructions, etc. I like to do my research, but need some things better clarified. Please humor someone fairly new to all of this and answer as many as you can. Thanks.
√I have CWM Recovery 3.x right now, should I upgrade to the 5.x one?
√What's this Amon_Ra Recovery I've been seeing? Is it different? better?
√Should I start with CM 7.0.3 or jump right into the new 7.1.0?
√What kind of changes can I expect to see to functions and appearance?
√Will I still have all of the basic apps? i.e. camera, gallery, swype, bluetooth, gps, weather, calender, clock, etc?
√What about the T-Mobile specific things like MyAccount?
√Does it effect the Genius Button?
√I want to know what kind of work will be involved with getting my phone back to the way I like it and what kinds of things will be replaced(I assume with better apps) or removed all together requiring me to find replacements. I've tried to review the changelog, but quite frankly, I don't understand most of what it lists.
I use LauncherPro and Folder Organizer.
√Will all of that stuff still be there on my homescreens?
√Will I need to redo all of my settings, ringtones, wallpapers, alarms, etc?
Yes, I want to be rid of sense and use CM instead.
Yes, I want to be updated to GingerBread without waiting anymore for the OTA
No, I do not want to lose my customization, apps or anything else except the bloatware.
I have a full titanium pro backup of all apps and system files plus data.
I have a nandroid backup done through clockwork mod recovery.
My e-mail, calender & contacts should be backed up through Google.
I use SMS Backup & Restore for all of my texts and Handcent is the app.
I backed up my LauncherPro and my Folder Organizer.
I have the SD card backed up in full on my PC.
√Did I miss anything?
I read that I should wipe not just the phone but my SD card too and do a partition on it for Apps2SD.
√Do I wipe, partition, then just copy everything back to it?
√Is it better to do it while in the phone connected to the pc or pop it out and do it directly from the pc?
√Should I be using ADB for any of this?
I'm sure I will come up with even more questions as I continue to research and get answers to these, but thank you so very much to anyone willing to take the time to settle a new root user's overloaded brain. There is just SO much info out there, sometimes it is hard to make sense of it all and this forum has always seemed to me to be not just the most knowledgeable, but also the most willing to break things down and clarify things without judging a poster for being confused. Noobs like me appreciate that.

You should update clockworkmod recovery just to be on the safe side. I don't believe there is an amon_RA recovery for the MT4G. we only have Clockworkmod and ext4 recovery. I would personally go for clockworkmod.
Now as for which CM7 version, that depends on you. Do you want Android 2.3.4 (CM7) or Android 2.3.7 (CM7.1)? Both are pretty much the same, just a different base and minor changes.
When you flash CM7, you'll need to flash the gapps as well, since Google apps are not preinstalled. Instructions on the CM thread. But besides gapps, all the other stock apps should be there, (minus the bloatware). So like camera, phone, messages, gallery etc will all be there. Tmobile my account can be downloaded from the market for free.
THIS ROM DOES NOT INCLUDE THE GENIUS BUTTON FEATURE, THE BUTTON IS REMAPPED TO THE SEARCH FUNCTION.
Now as for apps and back ups, yes you will lose all data as you are required to do a FULL WIPE. but if you have already backed up apps in titanium backup then you should be fine.
NO NEED TO WIPE THE SDCARD, JUST THE PHONE. well, unless you want to eliminate all error. But I don't suggest you do it.
If you have any more questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Only swipe card if you are having issues that you can't solve. Is pretty low the probability that card gives you problems.
For your apps, you can back them up with another app, called titanium back up i.e.
Do not skip this line ! - do not restore your from your google account . That will always bring problems . once you flash the tom, skip the the logging and restore apps from titanium back up. Then log in and skip "restore" from your account in google .
Not too many people know this , and trust me, it will avoid a lot of issues with any ROM

lol someone has lots of questions
but that's ok
really, android 2.3.4 and 2.3.7 don't have any BIG differences, or noticeable ones. base means the android version that the rom is based on/running on.
titanium backup only covers apps, all of the rest of the settings WILL BE ERASED, sorry. when you wipe the phone in clockworkmod recovery, you're basically doing a factory reset. doing a nandroid backup only back ups the CURRENT rom your phone is running right now, in your case, stock 2.2.1. the nandroid is used to go back to in case you need it.

The first 2, System Settings & Android Home, think they will cover all that extra customization stuff? And will it give me any problems when I restore it?

if you are going to flash cm7, you must manually install gapps, since they are not included in the rom.

√OK, and then once I install the actual apps from there, I use Titanium to restore my settings and data?

OK Thanks, so I should be able to find a list somewhere of Gingerbread features and that's what will be in the ROM? Is there a straightforward list somewhere, in layman's terms, of what apps & features & such come with it or don't? Does the appearance of things change? Like the settings screens, notifications, lock screen, etc?

android 2.3.4 and 2.3.7 don't have any big changes, google it, and maybe you can find some screenshots.
you can't back up the phone, dictionary, android home, system app etc from stock MT4G and restore it once you are in CM7. the roms are totally different, the apps were made for HTC roms, and you are running AOSP.
once you install the gapps, yes, you can use titanium to restore your downloaded apps+data. BUT NOT SYSTEM APPS BACKED UP FROM YOUR PREVIOUS ROM.

√OK, so if I understand correctly. The CM7 ROM has it's own apps which replace the stock ones and I will need to set them up all over again. Correct?
?Is there a list of these apps out there so I can go through my current ones and maybe write down key settings to use when setting up the new ones?

√So any App that I actually downloaded and installed myself after getting the phone, but nothing that came on the phone initially with the Stock ROM, correct? It just won't do it or it will cause problems?

yes, that's all correct.
well, list...? you mean like list of all the stock apps on CM7?
if you try to restore the stock apps from another rom onto this rom, it will get messed up.

Yes, like I've seen some ROMs that have listed features such as includes camera, calendar, messages, etc or what they have added like screenshot, apps2sd, etc But I can't seem to find anything like that for CM7. I've looked at the Changelog page but it lists everything like fixes and updates and tweaks, and a lot of it I don't understand. For example... it lists... Common: Camera timer - Danesh Mondegarian
√Does that mean it comes with a camera or just that it adds a timer to the camera app, but I have to get & install the app?
And this has to be an inside joke, right? Common: "eat" pushes fresh brunch/breakfast to device - Ricardo Cerqueira
Good to know about the stock apps. Thank You! I probably would have tried to restore everything if you hadn't said something. See, questions overload pays off LOL
√So once I flash the ROM, Should I actually re-download and reinstall my apps, will it find them automatically from the SD card, or do I have to restore everything from the backups?
√I saw you mention the VU ROM... I was looking into that one awhile ago before I settled on CM7. How do you like it? That's a Sense one, right? Much different from CM? How hard would it be to switch between them to check them both out?

UPDATE: I found a decent list here... http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html
oddly though, it only goes up to 2.3.4, no 2.3.7, but from what I could gather elsewhere the only main changes from .4 to .7 were for the Nexus S and Galaxy S, so I guess I need to look more at the difference between CM 7.0.3 & CM 7.1.0 to decide.
√And in that case 7.1 should just add on to whatever was already there in 7.0, right?
And OMG 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, looks amazing! I can't wait.

You would have to restore the data manually through titanium backup.
VU is AMAZINGGGG
Awesome battery life, smooth as butter, beautiful UI. better than CM7 IMO lol. VU is a Sense 3.0 Tom based off of the HTC Sensation.
VU is a LOT different from CM, since one is sense and the other is AOSP.
It wouldn't be very hard to switch between them and try both of them, just do the basics for both Roms:
1) MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
2) do a full wipe (DATA, CACHE, DALVIK CACHE)
3) flash rom.zip
4) reboot, wait patiently (first boot should take longer)
5) enjoy!
6) flash any other mods/tweaks/themes etc
7) hit the thanks button

Hmmm... My son and his girlfriend both have the Sensation. They love them. OK, I will definitely check that one out too.
Which is the current stable version to get? Do I still need the GAPPS?
I would love to see a side by side comparison chart of ROM apps and features. Can't believe no one has done one yet. Although I guess with all of the frequent updates to ROMs it would be a pain to maintain.
Thank you for answering so many of my questions, saranhai, you've been very kind and patient. Would you mind taking one more look through these posts and see if you might be able to answer any of the remaining ones with question marks? Thanks so much!

Yes definitely check out VU
The most stable version would be the latest one, v2.39.
You don't need to flash gapps for this Rom, they're all included
I suggest you wait until the Virtuous team releases their sense 3.5 version
I can't wait!!
Lol no problem bro, just hit the thanks button if I've helped

√Currently when I use my Bluetooth it utilizes the genius button features for commands to access calls, maps, navigation, searches, etc when I am in the car. So will I no longer be able to use my Bluetooth or voice commands? If so, recommended replacement?

I read that I should wipe not just the phone but my SD card too and do a partition on it for Apps2SD.
?Do I wipe, partition, then just copy everything back to it?
√Is it better to do it while in the phone connected to the pc or pop it out and do it directly from the pc?
√Should I be using ADB for any of this?

I'm hoping in addition to all of the regular added benefits of flashing a new ROM that these issues will be solved once and for all as well...
√So, knowing that, what do you think? Wipe the SD too?

for VU: if the genius button feature is not present, you can still use bluetooth and voice commands for google search. google search is pretty much the same thing as genius, maybe not as many features, but not bad at all.
all roms should include the stock apps, messages, camera, phone, calender, calculator, etc etc, and that includes CM7. i'm not so sure about the camera timer on CM7 though. really, it doesn't matter which version you install, though i would suggest CM7.1 because it seems more stable to me.
SDcard: if you are experiencing issues, then yes, wipe the SDcard and partition it. i would say that you pop out the SDcard and plug it into the computer, just to be on the safe side
you shouldn't need to be using adb for any of this.
