Android SDK and ADB on Linux? - Vibrant General

Ok I've tried installing it a thousand times already but every website I went to has instructions that are really vague or the language is so complicated it doesn't make sense. Will someone please post the instructions in this format.
Step 1:
Step 2:
Step 3:
I know it seems pretty elementary but I'm kind of new to Ubuntu AND android SDK. The only program I've ever used for android on my computer was Odin when I had a windows OS. Thanks.

If you have Ubuntu/Debian/Linux Mint then this should work. Just follow the first post. You'll have to manually find the udev rules for your Vibrant since the only rules I've included are for HTC phones.

One stop shopping for apps2sd procedure

I am interested in doing the apps2sd thing, but I am having a hard time finding all the info I need in one place. I am finding parts of several methods and I can't see what goes with what and in what order. I am rooted and running Liberated R003 with the additional zip for sideloading. I was able to find great instructions for those procedures.
Is there a post anywhere that has a complete step by step procedure for (nervous but willing) noobs? I am hoping for a link to whatever drivers and zips needed for this. I am not having luck finding an ADB driver for windows and aria (do I even need those?).
Not expecting to be spoon fed, I just want to have a complete step by step that makes no assumptions about knowledge of terminals and command lines.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Ok...one of those "right after I posted that I found my answer" moments. And it was right here in this forum. All I need now is to figure out the ADB thing. Where do I get it?
Sent from my (liberated) HTC Liberty using XDA App
I cannot figure out the ADB driver issue. I installed the SDK and included the drivers. When I plug in my aria and it advises me of the missing driver, I point (64bit) vista to the SDK folder named USB drivers. Nothing is found. What am I doing wrong?

Unrevoked doesn't see aria - Ubuntu 10.04

Hi there,
It's probably something simple, but most things are easy when you know how!
Unrevoked does not see my Aria.
Running Unrevoked 3.32 under Ubuntu 10.04.
The USB debugging is ON in the phone.
I have tried to run reflash from the terminal using 'sudo reflash' but it will not run that way, doesn't even start.
Any ideas?
(the last time I was here, I was getting the windows 6 hack for my Audiovox Starcom 6700! I still have it by the way and it still works as a pocket PC just fine.)
Ted
One more thing.
I upgraded the rom to 1.25.502.12 tonight, hope that didn't kill this method.
Oh, it's 32 bit Ubuntu.
First of all, I ran it on the wife's windows (yecch) machine and everything worked great!
Whooo Hoooo!
Second, I kept looking and found this on the unrevoked page:
I'm running Linux and it won't detect my device!
Either run the program with root permissions, or add appropriate udev rules to the file /etc/rules.d/51-android.rules. Instructions are available at the Android Developers website.
So, I probably would have figured it all out anyhow...
Maybe this will help someone else.

[Prerequisite to Rooting] Android SDK Installer - v3.0 for Windows

**Microsoft Windows ONLY*
This installer is for new people looking to root their HTC Thunderbolt (not sure on other HTC devices but should work.) I compiled an SDK installer that installs all the necessary files to the directory of your choice (default C:\sdk) to your PC. This installer also includes HTC Sync for the Drivers as well as Java if you do not already have Java installed.
So if you're new to Android and want the tools to root, this might be the place to start before making that big step.
**If you have problems with it installing, try right clicking and running as administrator
Android SDK Installer with HTC Sync and Java v3.0 - 117 MB
*This is a pretty good size file but remember it also includes HTC Sync and Java within the installer.
*You cannot download Java and HTC Sync at the same time, so be patient.
*If you do not want to install HTC Sync but want the driver allow it to install them and then cancel out when asking to install HTC Sync.
*If you already have Java you can cancel out of the Java Installer.
**Download might take longer depending on your Internet Connection.
Please let me know what you think below.
Thanks!
Changelog:
v3.0 - Maintenance Update
v2.0 - Fixed Directory Issues
v1.0 - Initial Release
Also, here is a great tutorial brought to you by Captainkrtek.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=9959449
The only difference in the tutorials is the path.
The path for adb with this installer will be: C:\sdk\platform-tools
*Big thanks to CoolSilver for helping me test this out
Looks good! But where's the link?
Sorry, was still uploading it. Its updated now.
Tried it out, works fine. ADB setup and working.
Such a good idea. Trying to talk someone through installation of sdk is kind of maddening. Do we still have to add the path?

No, it auto installs to C:\sdk
C:\sdk\platform-tools\
This will help a lot of those I see struggling with root not knowing anything about sdk/adb. Great post. Perhaps linking a guide to adb will help people as well?
Looks good. Newbs all around are rejoicing.

I can guarantee and you have my word that the applicaton installer is clean. Norton AV also has many false positives.

Hmm, strange. What version of Windows are you running?
Also, check to see whether you already have java installed. If you do then java is not necessary to complete the installation successfully.
Great job man great contribution! Cheers to you

Glad you were able to get it to work!
Thanks for this!!! My plan is to slowly get to root. I want to try to push a few apps first.
This works really well. Made setting up adb and rooting the thunderbolt so easy.
Thanks I used this to help root my phone.
Only issue I notice is that when I click sdk manager.exe the console comes up shortly and dissappears after about 2 seconds. How do I fix this? Is it because your program only installs the non-jdk version of Java possibly?
Any tips would be appeciated

I had the same trouble when i was trying to get root access, it ended up being that i was using the wrong drivers. I uninstalled all the drivers i had and started from scratch.
Use Ubuntu to get it work. Drivers under Windows are crap and I tried Xp, Seven 7 and all the possible drivers. Never worked until I installed Linux...

[Q] Is it possible to install Android without going through Linux?

I'd love to be able to use Android on my Omnia 2, but it looks like it involves some linux, at which I'm complete novice.
Is there a way to install Android on Omnia 2 from a MS Windows computer?
There are 2 methods to install Android on our Omnia 2
Method 1: Using the auto installer to install on the external SD Card.
Download the package from the developers website http://o2droid.phj.hu/index_en.php
Method 2: Using Ubuntu to install in the internal storage
It is not difficult to install Android using Linux,
Use Ubuntu Live CD, download from the below link
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
There are also instructions on the website on how to make Live CD, or you may Google it for step by step instructions.
Once you have Ubuntu loaded you may follow my Video tutorial on the below link for step by step instructions to install Android on Omnia 2 using Ubuntu

All the best..!

I've been trying the first method, but my Omnia 2 keeps freezing in the middle of installation. The developer doesn't seem to run a discussion forum on his website. Do you know if he provides support on XDA?
Below is the discussion thread, read the first page carefully

I don't think there should be a problem if its version 7 now, The tool is made for certain task (to create partitions) and it should do it.
