**Microsoft Windows ONLY*
This installer is for new people looking to root their HTC Thunderbolt (not sure on other HTC devices but should work.) I compiled an SDK installer that installs all the necessary files to the directory of your choice (default C:\sdk) to your PC. This installer also includes HTC Sync for the Drivers as well as Java if you do not already have Java installed.
So if you're new to Android and want the tools to root, this might be the place to start before making that big step.
**If you have problems with it installing, try right clicking and running as administrator
Android SDK Installer with HTC Sync and Java v3.0 - 117 MB
*This is a pretty good size file but remember it also includes HTC Sync and Java within the installer.
*You cannot download Java and HTC Sync at the same time, so be patient.
*If you do not want to install HTC Sync but want the driver allow it to install them and then cancel out when asking to install HTC Sync.
*If you already have Java you can cancel out of the Java Installer.
**Download might take longer depending on your Internet Connection.
Please let me know what you think below.
Thanks!

v3.0 - Maintenance Update

The only difference in the tutorials is the path.
The path for adb with this installer will be: C:\sdk\platform-tools
*Big thanks to CoolSilver for helping me test this out
Looks good! But where's the link?
Sorry, was still uploading it. Its updated now.
Tried it out, works fine. ADB setup and working.
Such a good idea. Trying to talk someone through installation of sdk is kind of maddening. Do we still have to add the path?

No, it auto installs to C:\sdk
C:\sdk\platform-tools\
This will help a lot of those I see struggling with root not knowing anything about sdk/adb. Great post. Perhaps linking a guide to adb will help people as well?
Looks good. Newbs all around are rejoicing.

I can guarantee and you have my word that the applicaton installer is clean. Norton AV also has many false positives.

Hmm, strange. What version of Windows are you running?
Also, check to see whether you already have java installed. If you do then java is not necessary to complete the installation successfully.
Great job man great contribution! Cheers to you

Glad you were able to get it to work!
Thanks for this!!! My plan is to slowly get to root. I want to try to push a few apps first.
This works really well. Made setting up adb and rooting the thunderbolt so easy.
Thanks I used this to help root my phone.
Only issue I notice is that when I click sdk manager.exe the console comes up shortly and dissappears after about 2 seconds. How do I fix this? Is it because your program only installs the non-jdk version of Java possibly?
Any tips would be appeciated

Hello All.
I've had my UK, T-Mobile G1 for quite a while now. I have rooted it and it is running the latest CyanogenMod recovery image and ROM. I also have Apps2SD set up on my 8GB SD card, on a 512MB ext partition. This was all working fine until the problems below occurred...
I'm having some problems with several apps and ADB.
My PC runs Windows 7, 64 bit, and I can't seem to find a driver for the G1's ADB. I'm probably being incredibly stupid, but I just can't find one. I have used one before on Vista, where I had to set some boot options, but I'm not too sure / happy about doing that on my nicely functioning Windows 7. And as my friend once said; "You mess around with windows, then windows will mess around with you"...
But, anyway, I can't seem to get ADB working, if someone could either send me a link to the drivers or guide me through it, I'd be grateful...
Also, it may be due to me running CyanogenMod, but if I try to update the Facebook app, it downloads the app, and then when it tries to install, gives me the error "Installation Unsuccessful - Incompatible Update".
And with the Google Maps app, it says "Installation unsuccessful - Package file was not signed correctly". This may be due to me trying to get the hacked version of the app to get the Google Maps Navigation working in the UK, but I couldn't get that to work, so I uninstalled it and Nav Launcher, and now when I try to update from the Market it gives me that error.
I've seen a guide online with ADB commands, but as I have no access to ADB, I'm a tad screwed. I've tried runnign the commands in the Terminal Emulator in the phone, which does approximately nothing whatsoever.
So, can anyone give me any guidance on any of my Android problems?
Thanks in advance - Ethan

In that case, do you remember where you obtained the driver from? I would love a link, or a zip file or something...
I'm on Vista x64 SP2 and I can use ADB just fine. You just need to download the SDK and then get the USB driver through there. It used to come included, but now you need to use the ADV and SDK manager and download the drivers as an SDK Component through there.
After that, make sure your phone is set to USB Debugging mode and plug it in then point windows to the new drivers. If it doesn't want to install the new drivers, you might need to remove the old ones first. I had to use USB Deview (DL link at bottom of page) and removed all installed HTC drivers. After that I plugged my G1 back in, pointed it at the newly downloaded drivers and all was well.
I'm running adb/fastboot/android sdk on win7 64b ultimate. The drivers are included in the sdk download. Once you download the sdk, make sure you have java installed. (I had to install JRE and JDK to get it to work properly, not sure if this was needed) Anyhow, when you have the sdk downloaded, run the sdk setup program. Go to settings and check the box for force update (unsure of the exact terminology used there) then go to available updates and your drivers are the last option on the list.
my desktop is kind of broken right now, so i am trying to install the sdk here on my windows 7 x64 laptop. the desktop was vista x32.
ive done this before and had no problems. download JDK and JRE, then the SDK. too easy right? well the SDK installer is lying to me.. its trying to tell me the JDK isnt installed! it wont let me progress from there, it just gives me a link to the download for JDK.
thought maybe i should reinstall. i did. rebooted and what not. still not working.. any insight?
you have already installed JDK right? OK, go here:
Start, Rightclick on "MyComputer" -> Properties -> Left More Settings -> Environment variables -> put in "PATH" the Path to your JDK, mine for example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin" but dont forget to make a ";" before the path. it should work then. sry for my bad englisch
Thank you! Will try soon

I'm actually about to pull my hair out.
I intstalled droid explorer which wasn't functioning right, so i uninstalled and put android commander on this required me to download android sdk, when downloading that it wanted me to install jdk before it progressed.
I downloaded it and it didn't seem to like it, so I went and downloaded another jdk didn't like it either...
I tried the path thing thinking it would work, seemed like a decent solution its C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23 on my computer and still nothing... really frustrating as I now can't use any software to view my android...
sometimes i just hate computers
Try installing the 32 bit version instead of the 64. That's what solved the issue for me.
I had the same issue (on a Windows 7 64-bit laptop). I ended up giving up on the exe and using the zip file instead.

These.
Or see this thread if you want to install via exe on 64bit JDK (it's looking in the registry): stackoverflow.com/questions/4394584/android-sdk-install-problem
Relevant answer:
On Win 7 x64 the Android SDK Installer is looking JDK in 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft' registry branch, but in reality the JavaSoft was placed in 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft'. I copied all JavaSoft branch to the path search, and then the installer found the JDK.
Hi there,
It's probably something simple, but most things are easy when you know how!
Unrevoked does not see my Aria.
Running Unrevoked 3.32 under Ubuntu 10.04.
The USB debugging is ON in the phone.
I have tried to run reflash from the terminal using 'sudo reflash' but it will not run that way, doesn't even start.
Any ideas?
(the last time I was here, I was getting the windows 6 hack for my Audiovox Starcom 6700! I still have it by the way and it still works as a pocket PC just fine.)
Ted
One more thing.
I upgraded the rom to 1.25.502.12 tonight, hope that didn't kill this method.
Oh, it's 32 bit Ubuntu.
First of all, I ran it on the wife's windows (yecch) machine and everything worked great!
Whooo Hoooo!
Second, I kept looking and found this on the unrevoked page:
I'm running Linux and it won't detect my device!
Either run the program with root permissions, or add appropriate udev rules to the file /etc/rules.d/51-android.rules. Instructions are available at the Android Developers website.
So, I probably would have figured it all out anyhow...
Maybe this will help someone else.

Good information. Thanks for sharing! I'm sure it will help some other newbie down the road.
looking for a simple way to swap and mod a few system files on my HD2 Haret/SD android.
i am not developing anything, only changing.
i am ok with the terminal on the device (using BTEP) but its tedious.
what i need is to mount the phone on wndows 7 (or a MAC if thats easier) so i can copy and paste from the comfort of my own keyboard
its a Haret/SD build, not nand.
thanks
That's not a question of SD or NAND. All you need to know is this: http://androidcommander.com/
Edit: If you are on 64bit-system...install 32bit java...otherwise it will not work!
thanks icke, yes 64bit windows 7, was hoping for a standalone program but specs say i still have to get ADB USB Driver from SDK.
i think thats where the problems were with other methods i tried.
looks just what i was looking for though.
not sure if it will work,
DroidExplorer: http://de.codeplex.com/
Works with NAND Roms, not sure if it works with SD, or does what you want.
Yes, I'd like to do the same as the OP. That Androidcommander looks pretty interesting. Think I'll try it... But I see, I need to d/l and install the Android SDK... as a requirement for Androidcommander. Shouldn't be too difficult... But I see I need to d/l and install the Java Development Kit as a requirement for the Android SDK... wish I were a developer, so I'd have some use for these large programs!!!
Droid Explorer seems to have the same requirements. Is all this even worth it for a non-developer/programmer. Isn't there a better way to run a file explorer on an Android device from a desktop PC?
Haha Lol... with Windows or WM... I feel like a pro! with Android, I'm just a noob... Lol, Lol
(edit)... seems the more I read, the less (I realize) I know... for now. But all this above... I'll figure it out Not a problem!
@ icke... thanks for the reco on androidcommander. And for anyone else reading, the install wasn't too difficult, inclusive of the SDK and the JDK. There were unexpected repercussions (not sure but certainly from the SDK or JDK install). Upon reboot... the WinXP Security Center didn't recognize my firewall or AV pgms... saying the system was unprotected, although both av & firewall were up & running.
The command prompt (cmd.exe), also wouldn't recognize anything typed. But... Google is my friend. One of these DK pgms (probably Java, but I dunno), blew-up the systems environment variable (Path), and so I had to recreate. Done and all is well. AC looks looks to be exactly what I wanted... and then some. Thanks again!

Sorry...doesn't know how it is working on WinXP (Only tried Win7 64x). All I can say: everything I do between my Leo and Pc, I use Android Commander. For me, there's no better way to copy, merge, paste...or anything else working 1:1 with my device.
BTW: There is an pluggin for TotalCommander PC...but doesn't worked for me yet...maybe on 32X systems.

Just to reiterate... It's working very well in WinXP. I'm genuinely pleased with how it all panned out and I was just thanking you again for the recommendation.
The Java jdk, or was it the android sdk (still not sure which) overwrote and changed my systems environment variable (AKA system path) and so the command prompt and some security pgms appeared to not be working... Once I restored the path - everything worked again. AC is must have for what it does!
Hello,
I ran into a couple problems having android studio to install and work. thought I'd share my findings!
First, it wouldn't install. Not finding Java JDK even though it was installed.
This is solved by changing the name of C:\Windows\System32\Java.exe to something else before the installation.
Don't forget to change it back to java.exe once installed.
After installing Android studio, it wouldn't run (normal or admin didn't change a thing).
You will need to create a system environment variable named JDK_HOME with your JDK installation path (in my case C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_21\ ).
Android studio should now launch. (more help here )
Now that Android Studio launches, it asks for the latest android SDK
Just download and install the SDK 22 from Here
make sure you run the .exe as administrator after installation

For those having issues starting Android Studio in some Linux distros, such as Studio not finding JAVA_HOME, JDK_HOME, STUDIO_JDK, set any of those variables to the directory where Java is installed (e.g. /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_21) previously to the whole validation statements in the startup shell file (studio.sh) and everything should be fine...

It should work fine on 1.6.
Maybe it depends if you're 32bit or 64bit?
My personal setup is Windows 8 64 bit running the 64bit version of Java 1.7.
Also, for the SDK issues, if you already have the SDK installed from using Eclipse, you can just point Android Studio to that SDK under Project Settings or something (I forget the exact wording of the setting and I'm not at my computer right now...)
Thank you! I was having trouble getting Android Studio to start once installed. Setting JDK_HOME fixed this.
Im using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and set the JDK_HOME variable but it wont start...
/Edit: it works now.

I'm having a small issue with Android Studio for Mac, and was wondering if anyone was running into a similar issue or has any advice.
When running my application, I'm getting an error on the install, specifically a Failure: [install_failed_invalid_apk].
I'm sure it's something really simple and elementary, but it wasn't an error I'm familiar with seeing coming from Eclipse.
Try on Linux.

android studio is in 0.1 version, while eclipse is a really good IDE for android coding.
i get used to Eclipse, and i love it more. but also i think that Google will make android studio to be the right tool for development.
Maybe android studio is in 0.1, but is based on intellij Idea which is not new, supports android already, and seems better and faster.
I don't know how it is for an experienced developer which already know ways to move, but I started with Eclipse about a year ago, and I can say that I hate it. I've lost hours and hours to wait the very slow build process of eclipse, to wait for recover from crashes, to wait for restarts because graphical editor goes mad, to clean and reclean project so eclipse be able to see a new resource added, fix and refix layouts because graphical editor shows them completely wrong(especially on dialogs).
I don't know how android studio or intellij Idea will be(I used it for very short time until now), but I find it better, faster and maybe easier(maybe because I'm more familiar with eclipse) and I think that I will spend less time to learn it that the time I'll loose with eclipse.
Fixed [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_APK]
Ok, so I was able to fix the [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_APK] error I was getting, and finally get my app running on my phone. I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.
When I examined Logcat, I found that my package name in the Manifest was what was giving me issues, specifically the default package name given by Android Studio on project creation. The package name in my Manifest was invalid, and did not have a "." separator. Once I corrected this, I was able to run my application.
Another error I found further down the line was that new activities do not appear to be automatically added to the Android Manifest at the moment, so keep that in mind as well.
Happy programming
A different problem, if Android studio doesn't start, could be that the studio must be run as administrator. So it was at least for me.

Proxy Settings for Gradle/Maven
Hi,
just tried the Android Studio using a proxy on WindowsXP.
Even if configuring the proxy in the Settings I got an error when creating a new project.
First I had to download the "gradle-1.6-bin.zip" and had to copy it to ".gradle\wrapper\dists\gradle-1.6-bin\72.....\
After that Gradle couldn't connect to the maven repository.
Solution: create a "gradle.properties" file in the ".gradle" directory
with content like this
Code:
systemProp.http.proxyHost=
systemProp.http.proxyPort=8080
systemProp.http.proxyUser=
systemProp.http.proxyPassword=
After that the first test project was generated without problems.
And even running it from the IDE and deploying/starting on my device (Galaxy Note, N7000) succeeded.
Is anyone here using this on Win 7 or 8? It has the stupid taskbar problem like Eclipse where you pin the exe, but when you launch it, it adds a second icon to the taskbar for the actual running app. What's even more ridiculous is, IntelliJ, which Android Studio basically is, doesn't have this problem! Any solutions?
