[Q] Weird Network Behaviour!!!! - XPERIA X10 General

Hi friends,
I was using a custom ROM by Wolfbreak and my network was behaving weirdly...
The icons in the top switched to E when at home and H when at office and when the icon was H,The network speed was more than 3mbps and when it was E the network speed was less than 1mbps.
And i have returned to stock 2.1 tonight just preparing my phone for oncomming GB update and i found that the network icon doesnt change to H anymore and i got stuck with 600kbps network spped.
Can anyone explain the behaviour and also suggest me how to get that H network with high speed GPRS while satying on my Stock ROM.

Your problem is probably because of bad signal strength or in your mobile network options you have use only 2g,...
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

I dont see option to set 2G and 3G. As i told you im using stock 2.1 ROM...is there any way to check where the settings are? i want that H network kind of speed..

Your phone was able to connect to 3g before? You haven't changed cellular providers?
Are you using an x10a or x10i and what cell company?
It currently means you are connecting via Edge....1 way...and not 3g...2 way.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=665171
And check your MMS settings.

Im using X10i with Airtel as cellular provider and its the same sim i used earlier.and i didnt have 3G activated from the begining but i was getting H network.

Why cant you search?

Conecting to 3G

hello,
after searching on "3G" in the forum, i seems that the problems are just the opposite to my question, they all want 3G to be turned off.
Now I want to connect to 3G (with the "G" icon on the staus bar).
My problem is that it always connect on "edge", with the "E" icon in status bar and when I want to make a video call, it always says that there is no connection to 3G so I can't make videocall.
Anyone knwos how to activate 3G?
I looked into the connections, but I don't want to mess in it without knowing what I do.
BTW I'm in Europe (Belgium).
Thanks
You fell into the same trap I did when I first got a Windows Mobile phone.
G means GPRS and is the lowest, simplest connection speed.
G = GPRS. "Normal" internet speed (9.6-14.4kbps)
E - Edge. "Enhanced" internet speed (normally 48kbps, but can be higher)
3G = 3G internet speed (128-384kbps). Also allows video calls.
H = HSDPA. "Mobile broadband" speed. (1.8Mbps, 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps depending on operator).
You'll want to go to:
Start > Settings > Connections > Advanced Network
Make sure that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled
From then on, it depends on the signal in your area. If you find that you're having a problem getting and maintaining a 3G or H signal, you might need to get an updated SIM from your operator. I got a new SIM from O2-UK and it solved my connection problems immediately.
I see that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled.
Could it have something to do with the settings in connections (instead of advanced network settings)?
I will also check with my provider (sim card)
Thanks for the reply
i cannot connect to the internet not using wifi. i do however h an H symbol next to my signal. i dont get why i have the hsdpa but cannot connect. i've tried anything i can think of.
*i can't turn data connection on in my comm manager, it automatically disconnects and says wap.cingular not working or gprs not working somthing like that.
*in the connection settings i pick media net wich is automatically picks att but still won't
*in settings/personal/phone i left if auto defualts for bands
*settings/connections/advance network i even tried to put it to hsda ONLY won't work
the only new lead im getting is this Zenith post saying he got new sim card so now it's working. that's all im getting at now. but im even skeptical about that
If you are not getting the 3G or H icon then you either have no coverage or an incompatible SIM.
If you can't connect to the internet you either have incorrect settings on your phone, or your network aren't allowing you on their APN.
Suggest in all cases phoning your network to get clarification.

you wouldn't believe how i found out i had no internet. they say'd it was in the system but it was disabled in thier system. i put in my brothers sims and his work just fine. so i told them to look at whatever his plan is and they switch to what he had. anyways long story short i found out not my settings bc you just auto configure it connectin wizards, and wasn't sims card, it was stupid att. i was getting the H icon but not an H on my signal. anyways its all done now. thanks again guys

Can't get HSDPA on T-Mobile UK

As the title says, I'm not getting HSDPA in areas where I was getting it before with my Galaxy S. I only ever get 3G and it is driving me nuts!
Is there anyway to change it to allow HSDPA on the phone? It is noticably slower, particularly streaming videos.
I'm on T-Mobile UK with the web & walk+ tariff.
Are you running the stock rom?
If so - afaik you get 3G for both 3G and HSDPA. Check your connection type in "About Phone" in settings - should be under "status".
Highland3r is correct. HSDPA is a 3G technology, and the stock ROM on the Nexus S does not differentiate it in the connection type display. You are most likely connected to your provider's HSPA network, your phone simply doesn't advertise that fact.
T mobile UK, uses a different band
it uses the same frequency as the 3G from ATT in USA
Nexus S is an AWS band phone
I'm having a similar issue with my Nexus S on Orange UK. I have to manually force it to use HSDPA in the engineer's menu but after a certain amount of time it defaults to UMTS.
My brother-in-law's Galaxy S has a constant HSDPA connection.

I'm on vodafone in the uk and I get HSPA mostly all of the time, u guys are right, it says 3g in the bar at the top of the screen but looking deeper it is in actual fact HSPA.

it's been like this since Android 2.3. They only display 3G whether your using 3G or HSDPA... they are essentially the same.
Therefore they just show 3G...
I prefer it to show me 3G or H or UMTS ( sometimes on UMTS aswell and still shows as 3G )
I am currently on CM7 and it does display H most of the time as the coverage is pretty good where I am. This has been the case even before I rooted the phone.
Thanks for the info guys, like Highlan3r suggested it has HSDPA in the status menu but 3G in the notification bar! It is the stock ROM also, just found it a bit unusual since changing from the Galaxy S only a week ago but now I know.
Thanks again!
Just to clarify, my Nexus S shows UMTS under status, even when a data connection is active. If I force it onto HSDPA by selecting WCDMA only in the engineer's menu, it again reverts to UMTS after a certain length of time.
My brother-in-law's Galaxy S has constant HSDPA connection on the same network. We are both using stock roms.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
you will only see HSDPA when there is network traffic. If the connection's idle, it goes back to display UMTS (to save battery and network resources)

Are you using a custom ROM of any kind? It _could_ be an issue with the APN's setup - CM7 for example doesn't set a default APN on my phone which seems to cause mobile data connectivity problems until a default is set/the extra crap is removed.
<edit>
You're probably best starting a new thread for this btw as it's likely to be a different issue to the ops
</edit>
And now after the 2.3.3 update it switches to HSDPA perfectly.

How do I toggle between 3G and HSDPA?

Have searched the entire forum for this to no avail. I want to disable HSDPA and only enable 3G. This was a straightforward process on my SGS. Assistance appreciated.
/h2
HSDPA is the only 3G standard that the phone supports, as far as I understand. So as far as the Desire HD goes, they're the same thing.
I am on t-mobile in th UK. My dhd switches between showing a G or H on the top line. If I go into settings, about phone, network, mobile network type. It shows either gprs, udms or hsdpa depending on signal type available. The phone supports edge too and can show an E on the too line but T-Mobile uk don't appear to support this.
Not sure how you could limit it but t-mobile have done this for some, contracts as reports elsewhere of download speeds capped at 384kbs I.e. max rate for 3G rather than the 2mbs+ I have seen on mine. Seems to be,contracts bought through resellers that don't include data and they use the free booster to provide the data element.
Hth
I am on T-Mob in the UK too. I get either G (GPRS) 3g (3g) or H (HSDPA) not seen an E yet and I have had it since October.
Mine switched between 3G and H on its own accord, there is no toggle that I know, think it depends on where you are and the mast you are connected to at the time?

I get E every now and then but mostly when my phone switches from orange to the T-Mobile network.

It depends on where you are and the signal strength your getting, why you would want to disable HSDPA is beyond me, it is the fastest you can get on your desire hd, E being the slowest (edge) then G, 3G, then H.
Why would you want to make your device slower?
Very weird, but anyway, as far as i know you can only toggle between 2g and 3g which will incorporate HSDPA as well.
Hope this helps.

HSDPA consumes more battery. My SGS used to support Edge, 3G and HSDPA too with an option to disable HSDPA and and allow 3G and Edge only.
Thanks for all your replies guys.

Download Advanced Settings app, go into phone info and there are some options there. Can't remember which is which though, there is a thread in here somewhere about the settings

Who was telling otherwise?
For Using only 3G or HSPA
Settings->Wireless &Networks->Mobile Networks->Network Mode->select WCDMA only.
Here according to your preference change between UTMS(or WCDMA) or GSM(2G).
Also to clarify speeds
G<E<3G<H.

[Q] 3g issues

Im having trouble connecting to 3g.
My Xplay connects to H network fine, but when that drops out it only connects to 2g.
When i manually try to select 3g im given a pop up 'your sim card doesn't allow a connection to that network'.
Ive phoned my provider & they say it's not sim related & there's no problem with the network.
Any suggestions?

Same issue here. But mine does go into 3G mode. But when i try to register for 3G it gives that error.
Most likely a frequency incompatibility. Not sure what H is, but check the gsm frequencies from the SE website and compare it with the 3G/HSPA frequencies your carrier runs on.
its a frequency issue, the only fully working networks are in the uk
I am in the in the UK !
same here, i did yesterday see my signal go from H to 3g but only for a few seconds. I am connected to vodafone uk and live in the city center where 3g always is available, how come mines mainly displaying H am I missing some settings ? does anyone elses xperia play show 3g in the taskbar ?.... tanks in advance
H is faster think of it as 3.5g

Does your phone connect in 2G, 3G or 4G network? What icon do you have above signal bar when you turn on data, 2G, 3G or 4G ?

ıf it works every update, should i use FR- Orange rom ?
Have you tried making speedtest on your phone ? Using speedtest app from Ookla, try it and see how much of ping you getting.
Also I don't think flashing a diffrent firmware would do anything. I would rather tried changing the simcard and see if that helps.

Yes I did. Nothing wrong. when i did it says 6,9 Mbps. Bu i connect like 64 kbps
This might seem like a dumb question, but do you have a metal case on it? I have the LOVE Mei on mine and it completely kills NFC and slows down wifi (havent tested cell connection myself). Even a crappy knockoff aluminium/plastic case renders NFC useless for me.
Also, are you rooted and do you have something that intercepts the connection installed, like AdBlock?
İ have same issue on turkey -turkcell. Connection drops between hspda and edge. İ flashed orange fr rom, and my issue solved. Orange fr have hspda-3g-edge, so connection not drop, it becomes 3g between them. sorry for my bad english, it is only solution for this problem
