Bad news for EVO 4G owners on 2.3 - EVO 4G General

I just finished chatting with a Sprint customer support ("expert"), and he confirmed that the bootloader on the EVO 4G (I made sure he understood EVO 4G, NOT 3D), will remain locked.
So, unrevoked, team win, or whoever else, if you can get root for the EVO, you rock. Heroic work you are doing BTW.
So... Yeah... Not the best news... I think my next android phone will be stock google...

While that "customer support expert" was talking out of his or her ass, I think its widely known in the rooted community, where bootloaders have never been unlocked, but hacked, that they were never going to unlock the the EVO 4G bootloader. They said Sensation and 3D, and Ill eat my own **** if those are unlocked before the end of the year.

The Evo 4G doesnt even have a "locked" bootloader like the sensation and E3D. The sensation and evo 3d have signed and encrypted bootloaders which are nearly impossible to crack unless you find away to disable the key check like Alpharevx has done. The current Evo 4G bootloader is locked in the same way that all previous evo 4g bootloaders were locked. The problem is, the exploit which was used to gain a temporary root shell in the 2.2 firmware (rageagainstthecage) was patched by google in 2.3. So before s-off can be achieved by hacking the hboot they must first find an exploit that allows for temporary root access.

lmao! sprint expert? omg. almost every tech on the phone does that! hahahahhaa who the hell would be stupid enough to talk about root with a sprint tech anyway? HE'S NOTING YOUR ACCOUNT THAT you're liking attempting to root your phone! hahhahahaha! They are required to tell you stories that claim that they will always be in control. That little tech IS A TECH ON THE PHONE! HE DOESN'T MAKE ANY choices in the company. hahahhahaha btw

Except that if I understand correctly, the new bootloader no longer allows the system to be downgraded. Previously you could run any version RUU you wanted; now we're stuck with 4.24.
Also, the EVO bootloader requires HTC signed images as well. I'm curious what is different about it from the 3VO our Sensation?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

The only thing different is its on the EVO 4G and not the Sensation or 3D...Kinda funny how people say its not "locked". Its always been locked, and just like alpharevx found a way around it on the 3D/Sensation, people have worked around it on the 4G.

What do you mean HTC wont unlock bootloaders? Are you saying its all a big lie? If you can't find a link mentioning that alpharevx got S-OFF for both devices than you are not looking hard enough.

Lol the only thing good you can get out of sprint tech reps is your MSL number (and i had a rep gladly give me mine yesteray). I talked to HTC and the furthest I could get up to in the chain of command was "tech support", who happily informed me that there is no confirmation the EVO will be included in the devices being unlocked.

I wouldn't ever expect sprint to allow an unlock anyways. They really don't want you to be able to do whatever you want, they only want you to do what they want with the phone. Not to mention getting things like tethering for free and not paying them...umm yeah they like their money.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

The unlocked scam was put into place to get customers to believe HTC was going to change. BUT IN TRUTH, we won't ever get unlocked phones from them. I find it funny that anyone in here believes we will. Lets get a REAL employee for HTC to give it to us first before we believe it. lol. Just like everyone has said... it will always be locked for our own safety and security. But what I'm hoping they'll do is just unencrypt it. or just give us their key so we can sign it and apply it. :-D
OKAY, I HAVE A PLAN. SOMEONE APPLY FOR HTC and steal the HTC key and quit. :-D

Look at the last 2 in 2.2
Its higher than the others. Tis fake
i shall check tomorrow for the info for dx froyo once i get to work.
There was a froyo build leaked for the incredible today so apparently this ia actually a real possibility. Also with the citing of the x running froyo let's hope this is the real deal. I can't wait to see quadrant after we apply froyo. Not that i give a ****. We are still having scores higher than the DInc w/froyo while we are on eclair. I mainly just like to not only say, but prove my x is better and show i made the right decision to come from incredible to x.

Same system version as what we have now? (.604) and yet it's 2.2.
Sounds like a lousy photoshop to me.
so i went to a vzw store and talked to a tech guy, and ill say that it is very rare that u find one that knows as much as us fellas on xda, im by no means a dev or anything but i do have a decent general knowledge. anyways, this guy seemed to know what he was talking aboput and he said it should def be out to the x in the next 2 weeks. he also said that the x was put into production actually 5 weeks early bc vzw needed something else bc of the huge shortages of the incredible. also he said that the phone was actually never intended to have 2.1 software and thats probably why its got several bugs. he said had they actually put it out when it was originally planned it would have been sold off the shelves with froyo. makes sense basically what i took from this is that 2.1 was a placeholder for the phone. with that said hopefully froyo will be far better and truly use the amaxing hardware that this phone has to the fullest of its potential. our benchmarks already blow the doors off of almost everything out there with graphics renderring being absolutely top notch. i mean i average about 1250 on quadrant and thats almost 3 times that of any snapdragon powered phones. with all of that gibberish said, this will soon be a phone to be dealt with. i made the switch from the DInc with the beleif that our great devs over here in the states WILL crack the bootloader issue. cant wait for some effen froyo.

Seems to be a looot of DINC hate in this thread, lol
IDK as far as a few of the top posts are concered, im scoring in the 1400s with my Froyo DINC on benchmarks and my Linpacks are in the 40s, so i dont beleive that above post that says the X is faster then the DINC even though its still running 2.1... we all know the X has suffered from random lag issues here and there for appariently no reason as well which would get old from day to day use
I was choosing between the DINC and the X myself at one point.. However the X is going to be ***substantially*** harder to root and flash a custom recovery image on, and therefore the freedom of the DINC won me over versus the locked down nature that the X is going to suffer from..
the DINC is already rooted with many custom roms and custom overclock kernals available, and soon we will have permanent nand unlock S-Off as well for a truly 100% unlocked device, i dont see that anywere in the X's future, certainly not anytime soon... basically because Motorola gave a big FU to rooters where as HTC has been a lot more lenient

The Droid X IS rooted.
I don't have any dinc hate i own one. I just want people to realize that A) benchmarks not all that important.B) neither moto or verizon is going to send out a froyo update that actually slows ur phone. When i referred to benchmarks i meant with both phones on 2.1. And yes at that point the x is just that mu h faster. On quadrant and linpack. Also the laginess seems to be remedied by alternative launchers. Sorry if i sound like im hating on dinc. I do indeed love my dinc.

The Never Again thing ended a month ago when Samsung decided to give us FROYO. even though it wasn't the OFFICIAL OTA, but we still got it didn't we?
Their hardware is great.
You want to complain about Samsung? You think we have it tough? Motorola in the past has always had LOCKED bootloaders, meaning NO ROMS for you.
We got the updates, and our devs have already begun on Gingerbread.
most of the phone's aren't even on Froyo dude.
Be thankful and positive instead of thinking negative 24/7.
If you get the S2, your 3G will not work on Tmobile in the US. The S2 runs on HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 frequencies, you want one that runs on 1700 / 2100 for your Tmobile to work at 3G speeds. Otherwise you're stuck on the Edge network.
Believe me, that was the first thing I checked when this phone was released for specs. It sucks, because I too am very interested in it. Personally I'd hands down much rather have the I9000 than the Vibrant, but I know if I ordered one, I'd be stuck with no 3G.
So yeah, if you're not on Tmobile in the US (if you're on say AT&T) then go for it. You'll probably get the next two maybe three releases of Android with it.
EDIT: This is assuming you get the S2 that's being released soon. If you wait for the Tmobile version, then yeah that'll obviously work and probably have 4G (and be running Eclair jk )

I'd disagree.
I THINK Eugene wasn't even working on Gingerbread, and neither was Master. A few other dev's left, and i think its a tragedy, because we DO need them in the end.
The only roms that i know are working on GingerBread is the EDT team, CM7, and TW
Yes, we probably need Eugene, and the others to get the other things such as kernels modems etc..
but I see what your trying to say, and agree with it, but not 100%
It would definitely be worth the upgrade. Assuming the phone comes to T-Mobile which I believe it will. This phone will either have the Exynos duo core or Tegra 2 chip with gingerbread. Gingerbread will be able to fully utilize the phones maximum potential.

I agree that Motorola and the locked bootloaders is worse than what Samsung does, however, that doesn't excuse them for practically abandoning Vibrant users. Yes, they released Froyo through Kies, but like you said, it wasn't official OTA, and to be fair it was not even close to the quality our devs produce in a fraction of the time. I'm happy with my Vibrant and we are fortunate for the great dev community and ease at which we can root, but you'd be an idiot to expect that to carry over to next gen Samsung devices. I'm not saying the next Samsung device will necessarily be any harder to root, but I wouldn't count on a the devs being their for the next gen Samsung devices. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am. To sum it up, with the rep Samsung devices (except the Nexus S) have gotten so far, I wouldn't pick up another Samsung device and expect the dev community to be just as great as the one for Galaxy S devices.

Grr .. New Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread build for Droid X reportedly is pushing OTA

http://www.androidcentral.com/new-a...ing-over-air?utm_source=ac&utm_medium=twitter
A new build of Android 2.3.3 for the Motorola Droid X is making the rounds this afternoon and reportedly has hit up a few people OTA-style. Here's the deal:
We're looking at Android 2.3.3. That's Gingerbread, folks.
It's system version 4.5.588 -- the leaked build we played with last month was 4.5.573.
It's said that the update might be pushed out silently -- you could get it an not even know it. We'll believe that when we don't see it.
If you don't feel like waiting for the update, you can update manually. (We've got instructions after the break.)
And if you do update (manually or over the air), the old 2.3.340 SBF file will still work, just in case you need to roll back.
So, that's that. We're halfway expecting Verizon to let us know if this thing's for real -- they've been really good about announcing updates the past few months. Anyone actually seeing this over the air yet? If you wanna give it a go the manual way, head on past the break. [Droid X Forums via P3Droid and Android Central Forums]

HTC is losing their edge to Motorola. They'll even let you downgrade from GB.
Not a good look for them since many people are so loyal to HTC for that very reason. And now that Motorola is talking about easing up on the rooting crowd...

Uhh. One of the first is kinda general.. there is no definition for it.
Being THE first and ONE of the first is a huge difference. If 30 android phones eventually receive the GB update and the EVO was tenth.. then yes it will be one of the first, especially if the EVO gets it in June and the other 20 don't get it until November.
I think you just like to argue or you got defensive thinking I was talking about you.. when I don't think I was.
Either way, all I ever said was the EVO would not be the first to get the update since there were leaks already for Samsung and Motorola phones.. and I got flamed for it.

You're trying to dispute the definition of the phrase "one of the first" and bring up an old post where I say "likely first maybe second" and you're going to accuse ME of trying to argue?
I love XDA forums.

Uh look at the second link. You said it will be THE first. I never once in that thread said it wouldn't be ONE of the first. Who the heck would argue that? Use your brain..
First you come in here and say "the wording was one of the first" and I proved otherwise. You didn't say likely first until you said THE first.
The Evo is going to be the first ...maybe second but likely first

stop trying to spin it, you chose to reply to my comment in here.. just own what you say.
It's ok if you're mad.. but it wasnt' the wording and you were pretty adamant about it being the first. You were wrong, it's ok.

Ok, first you said this.
The Evo will be getting gingerbread in quarter two....
Quarter two is April first to June first.
Show me one phone that has been updated to gingerbread (dev phones don't count obviously.)
The Evo is going to be the first ...maybe second but likely first

Then you said this
Given the track record of all those phones I would bet the Evo gets it first.
The Evo was the fastest phone ever to get an update...kinda sad...but true

You can even see in my posts you quoted from that thread that we were debating who gets it FIRST, not ONE of the first. We weren't debating that at all, nobody was.
Can we let it go now? The EVO will get it, it won't be first but we will get it eventually.

yea i did, like a month ago and been a fan of your work since my first day in the ns4g section and we were both perusing the 01120 prl thing for a while.
but now back to your first question. i dont understand the point/purpose/need for a thread about sending your phone in for repairs/replacement, so i did the typical innernet thing and posted an obnoxious picture that best explained what i just explained lol. now go get your shinebox.
btw how is that aosp rom coming, i missed out on it before but im eager to try it when its ready

yes that's why i returned mine, canceled sprint, went to verizon and got good service and a kick ass phone now. for the ns4g users that are waiting for this "fix" to come, i hope it comes soon for you guys.
when i get employed again and can get off my familys account on sprint i was thinking about Verizon or ATT. those are the only 2 companys i haven't tried.
i had VZ years ago but that was before there were such thing as smartphones.
i kind of have a thing for the Droid charge, really wanna get a feel for that phone

verizon service is 10x better than sprint. i even get 4g at my home now. yes im paying more but soo far it's worth it. i agree the charge looks like a nice phone but i got the tbolt, htc has a better rep with their phones.
I came from Verizon to sprint, my work has a sprint tower on property so yep. Best hurry and sign the contract before tiered goes in or has it already?

Already has... happened on the 7th. VZW can go shove tiers up there ass

How much is the difference in pay? i'd be lying if i said i didn't care how much lol
I had a HTC phone and enjoyed sense but i'm more of AOSP guy. HTC is still quite difficult to unlock but it is possible. it took me 10 minutes to root my nexus after installing the drivers.
AOSP is the way to go man. Speed and reliability over Bulky sense anyday

Any news

okay its the first of august I'm so tired of hearing stories about the magic s-off ... Has anyone seen or herd anything about getting root on the OG evo. 2.3.3 gingerbread.. p.s. and not just wishful thinking..lol

There is no news because, well, there is no news. Not once has there ever been news other than bullcrap rumors that "they" are working on a hack to the locked bootloader (thanks HTC). Face it, we're never going to get root on OTA 2.3.3. HTC wins and the hackers / modders lose.

Dude...we've all had our 2.3.3 phones rooted for a few days. Didn't you see that thread that talked about the exploit? You had to run it this weekend, though, because Sprint pushed a silent update to patch the vulnerability this morning. Sorry you missed it.

knowing how long 2.3.3 has been without root and how many phones are affected by the OTA and knowing how anxious everyone is to find root, you never thought to yourself, "hmmm these boards are probably going to be littered with threads about someone FINALLY finding root"...? jesus christ, use your f'ing head.
I see this is turning in to troll city..lol
Short answer... NO. No one cares about the og EVO anymore. Atleast not enough to root it because it would have been done already if they did.

If you goto the irc #unrevokedtest it says right at the top they are not working on our phone and don't ask eta in caps. So I'd say we gotta get new phones or new skills. Hate to be a Negative Nancy as I lost my root to insurance but its not looking good for us unskilled folks

Um yeah I already got banned from their channel on IRC for asking when "revolutionary" will include the og evo or if it will ever. They didn't ever answer me and I got banned so I have to assume they don't give a damn about the og anymore. But hey atleast agrabren reports that he is working on finding a way to port fr3vo to the og.
Sent from my no root S-On 2.3.3 EVO4g ...
just boycott htc and upgrade to another phone when you can, also if at all possible make sure to let sprint know DIRECTLY (by email dumbasses, not the store manager whos going to forget about anything bad you tell him by the time you walk out of the store) about how disgusted you are with the latest OTA, if you can exchange your phone a couple of times (cost them money) , and let them know that "their" software updates might make you not take them in the future at all, you can go all out and tell them how now you actually want to root because of it, and how you might change companies if they are going to ruin your phones with their bloatwared software
htc doesnt give a ****, but sprint just might
I had a EVO that unfortunately was locked due to the bootloader changing with the 2.3.3 update but instead of waiting 1) we are talking about a device that has been out for a year, 2) the bootloader unlock that HTC promised which I don't believe included the OG EVO 4g. I think its about time to move on or wait for hopefully one of the many hackers out there to do there thing. I moved onto the Sensation 4g but in my personal opinion I believe that a lot of the hackers and developers are focused on the EVO 3D and The Sensation 4g then the EVO 4g.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
There are stickies about rooting that will be updated when there is news. They even say "Updated mm/dd/yyyy" in the subject line to let you know when they are last updated. No need to post any questions about rooting, they just open the flood gate to stupidness and trolling.
Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can answer this.
When I had my Hero, it was rooted with s-on. I remember when they figured out the S-OFF thing, because it meant you would never lose root, if you flashed a RUU.
So I guess my question is, Why do we have to have S-OFF to be rooted?
Or was the unlocked bootloader used to obtain root in the first place?
