Stuck on boot screen - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Rooted with manual nooter. Later installed dalingrin overclock kernal and formatted cache like instructions say. Now I am stuck on the N screen. I tried turning off the device 8 times but that didnt work. What do I do now?
Should I remove overclock kernal from sd and try to reinstall the manual nooter zip file?

When you said "rooted with manual nooter", I, we, and all of us would assume that you are still running the stock ROM. Is that true?
If it's true, then "remove overclock kernal from sd" should NOT be a valid statement since you're running from eMMC, not off the uSD. Other way to say is the Dalingrin OC kernel would be installed on the eMMC, not the uSD.

Yes I am running the stock rom. 1.2. I read to try and flash stock rom from SD. I did so and the boot screen changed to "future of reading.....". but it still stops on the N screen. Any suggestions?

[Q] Update 1.2 with stock image but CWR installed

Hello,
First time posting, so thanks for the great forum. Found lots of info, that usually take care of my questions, but not this time.
A bit of info before my questions:
I have a dual-boot setup, stock not rooted image on emmc and uSD with CM7 RC4. The CWR was installed unintentionally after I was playing with he ROM Manager. Thought that CWR would be installed in uSD but it got installed on emmc. After an update I am now on CWR 3.0.2.8. I only go into the stock B&N image if I remove my uSD card.
I would like to update to 1.2 (I do use the stock reader app, mostly for magazines) but as far as I understood from other threads, this is only possible if CWR is not installed.
1 - Is it only possible to use the official update to 1.2 if CWR is not installed?
2 - Is there any way that I can remove the CWR without having to erase and register my nook again? I'm out of the USA, so it may be tricky, or it may not work at all.
I did saw several ways of removing CWR and going back to stock, but I just want to remove CWR and not touch the stock image.
Thanks!
i believe there's a mod to the 1.2 update in the development section that allows you to load 1.2 stock via CWR.
I did the same thing as you! Can't get it off.
Try this thread here in the nc development section:
[UPDATE ZIP] Stock 1.2 update.zip flashable from CWM

Thanks for the info. I had already spotted it, but I was wondering about removing the CWR and using the official update as well as boot recovery. There is a mention in that thread "Assuming you haven't fooked up any paritioning by using the "dual-boot" stuff ...", which I am not sure if I didn't.
I also spotted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690 part2 "File to remove CWR and restore stock recovery (2):"
But I simple can't figure out if after removing CWR I have to do the 8 failed boots or if it simply removes CWR and the nook is back at default. Anybody knows?
Edit: Can I just use the boot.img from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919353 and adb?

you didnt, in fact, you dont really have dual boot, that is when you have both roms installed in your main memory, so there is a partition trick you need to do.
CWR is nice, keep it , i would go for than method with the CWR, but i'm waiting for the "autonootered" version
Thanks for the reply don_ernesto. I have been reading a lot these couple of days and now I understand what a true dual boot is (with the changes in partitions, etc).
I figured out two ways of getting 1.2 onboard.
1 - Use the image for CWR
2 - Use the image from point 3 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690 to remove CWR and install 1.2 as if it was an untouched nook!
But first I'll just back up all of my nook for good measure!

[Q] Black Screen after installing overclock kernel

I'm completely new at this I just rooted my nook color today with Stable CM7. I wanted too overclock my nook so I flashed the kernel from this thread onto my device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064095 now whenever I go to turn on my device it's a blank blackish screen. How would I get it back to how it was before I installed this (I must've done something wrong, I'm an idiot). I just tried to install the stock kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908515 but same thing is happening for me.
This exact problem happened to me today. I found some link to a stock 1.1 Nook Color software or something like that, got the Nook Color back to essentially factory settings, and then repeated the whole process of installing CM7, with the added step of installing the kernel along with the ROM and gapps.
Could you link me to this stock software you found?

You used the wrong kernel. That one is apparently for rooted stock, not CM7.
Since your screen is black you might have to revert back to stock OS before reflashing CM7.
Can you boot into CWM from a SD? If so you can just try and redo the install procedure for CM7. This guide is recommended. (Also containing a link to a guide for reverting to stock, if needed...)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Alright I'm going to try to re-flash CM7. Thanks bro.
Well I reinstalled CM7 and when I pressed 'reboot system now' in CWM it just takes me back to CWM so I'm still lost. Going to try to install stock now.
_
Ok I installed stock now and it seems to be working, but It's just stuck at a screen saying 'contains Reader Mobile technology by Adobe Systems Incorporated.' and then the nook symbol in the center of the screen. It could just be loading but it's been 3-5 mins atleast so idk.
Yeah it's not going past that screen where it says 'contains Reader Mobile technology by Adobe Systems Incorporated.' not sure if I should try rebooting though. I tried going into recovery mode and get 'Install failed' so I tried installing again but same results.
I got my nook working with cm7 again, thank you for the help!
weird, my mom called me last night with the same issue. will see it today to see what it was.
Just to add on to the part where you said it took you back to CWM after reboot (for anyone who might come here for answers), you have to take the SD card out before you reboot.

CM7 n98 and OC Kernel

Hey there everyone, I didn't want to post a thread, but from searching around, I couldn't find anything really.
I bought my nook about a week ago, and I have it running on cm7's nightly build 98, from my sd card. Is there any way to get Dalingrin's OC kernel onto my nook? I've tried putting the update file onto the root of my sd card and booting to recovery, but it doesn't work. I've been dealing with rooting/rom'ing with my captivate for a while, so I am pretty sure I didn't mess up on the flash, but I'm at a loss. I know you nook veterans get annoyed at questions like this, but I just wanted to have a place where newbs such as myself could come for a definitive answer.
Thanks to anyone who helps in advance.

To boot to recovery from the SD card after you restart/reboot, hold the "n" button down before the green Cyanogenmod splash screen shows. Instead of "loading", you'll see something like "booting to menu". You can let up on the "n" key at that point. You'll get a screen that describes what to do, but you should boot to the SD card and recovery. The OC kernel will install if you have it located on the sd /boot. This is also the way to install a new nightly or stable ROM update.
Other methods of booting to recovery, such as pressing the power button or selecting recovery in the ROM Manager after Android has booted, don't work because they expect to see the install on the emmc, not the sd.
Thank you for that, last question. If I'm on nightly 98, can I flash whatever the newest one is over my current? and will it wipe anything?
Edit: I put the 6/13 oc kernel update file on the root of my SD, selected SD and recovery from that boot menu, but how do I check if it worked?

The default CM7 kernel has a max OC of 925Mhz in the CM7 Performance Settings. The 6/13 kernel has a default max OC of 1200Mhz.
I suppose it still didn't work then :/ I'll keep trying. Anyone know if a new nightly will wipe everything I have and have set up?

Trying to unroor.

I have followed all the guides to unroot my nook. I was on cm7. I get to cwm. And format everything the guides say but when I format data. I get error. I then install the nook restore file and all is fine till it gets to nook screen animation then it keeps looping. Maybe thus is normal. Please help

Good luck with the unroor. I've even searched for that and came up with nothing.
I meant unroot

Read my #3 post
I'm wondering if you are running into partition issues...?
I had originally installed CM7 on my NC using eyeballer's guide here, [GUIDE] Install CM7, OC kernel + Clockworkmod to EMMC - ALL NOOKS! (Updated:7/14/11).
It was about this time that I had seen reference to nooks with different partition schemes. I had one of the newer NCs where they (B&N) allocated 5GB of the EMMC to books and apps, etc. and 1GB available to us the users to put music, etc. on.
Previous NC's had the partitions reversed. 1GB available for books, apps, etc. and 5GB available to the users to load their own music, etc.
The second post of eyeballer's guide contains more information regarding the partitions issue.
I had decided that I wanted to go dual boot, leaving my stock B&N ROM on the NC and CM7 on the uSD. So I used eyeballer's guide above to load the stock ROM back onto the NC without issue. I just substituted the stock ROM in place of the CM7 and GAPPS files.
I then used verygreen's guide, [ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards. to set up my dual boot environment.
It was all very straight forward with no issues. In fact, I just upgraded from a uSD of 8GB to 16GB using verygreen's guide once again and using the latest nightly (138). The first time from a new install and was amazed that Google re-sync'd everything! I only had to install a few apps as opposed to all of them! The sync even restored my wallpapers, etc... all automatic!
NOTE: If you decide to use eyeballer's guide AND you choose to use any of the newer nightlies of CM7, Dalingrin's OC utility has been incorporated into the newer nightly builds of CM7 so you do not have to install this separately anymore.
If you choose to use verygreen's guide to opt for a dual boot scenario, you can hold down the "n" button when you first see the green banner/splash-screen (before you see the blue "Loading..." message) to enter an interactive screen to choose whether you want to boot from the device or the uSD.
This interactive boot process exists in the newer CM7 builds independently of which guide you use, so you should be able to achieve a dual boot environment easily... You could leave CM7 on your NC and put the stock B&N ROM on the uSD

First a little clarification. You have not "rooted" the Nook, you replaced the ROM with a custom ROM (CM7). Rooting is simply opening up the stock system without replacing the ROM. So if you followed instructions for un-rooting that was the problem. Unless you have a real need to go back to stock, I would make sure you have the latest version of CWR (v. 3.2.0.1) first and then reinstall CM7. The new version of CWR will prevent that error message you originally got as well as any freezing when trying to wipe the Davlik cache. Once installed, if you still do not want to keep CM7 follow the instruction for restoring the stock ROM, not for "un-rooting".
i did the same as pitmanr2003, but after i encountered this problem i di the 8x reboot, and it proceeded to "installing update", im guessing that worked. Now it says "Read Forever" when i boot up, but i get stuck into a loop at the same stage. Im having a little trouble trying to do what u said to do in post #3 though.

[Q] CWM problem

Good day all. I recently bought a Nook Color. I'm running CM7.0.2 along with gapps 20110613 from a 16gb SanDisk class 4 SD. When set up the apps (after enabling wifi) I got an error, due to the fact that my sucky router dropped the signal. As a result of this I was not able to download gmail, google maps, etc. My android market runs perfectly but I wanted to flash gapps so as to download gmail and the others. I went into ROM manager and updated to the latest CWM. However, no matter what I do I can't but into recovery. I tried n+power button, reboot into recovery from the power button menu, and from within ROM manager. All no go...it just booted into CM7, so I removed the SD card to boot into stock Nook 1.2 software. When I did this it brought me to the CWM recovery menu (SD card not in). Of course I could not select anything on the menu. Put back in the SD while still in the menu to try select an option but nothing. Shut it down by holding the power button and booted it back up and it went str8 into CM7. Shut down took out SD and it booted into stock Nook 1.2 software. What am I doing wrong guys? I'm trying to flash the overclock kernel and reflash gapps. THANKS
Could the reason gmail, youtube, googlemaps didn't install on setup be due to the fact that I'm not in the USA? If so I'd still like to know what the problem is so I can flash the overclock kernel.
No one has any idea? I know one option is to backup and redo everything, but I'd really like some troubleshooting ideas before.
Did you use the 1.3 image from verygreens thread? If so the old 7.0.* stables are not supported. You will need to back up and redo it either with the old image or a new CM7 version.

Yea I used the 1.3 in the thread with 7.0.2. What version cm7 would I need to use with the 1.3? 7.0.3 or a nightly,? Where would I be able to find an older image to work with 7.0.2 and what version of the image should it be?
The 1.3 image won't work with any 7.0.* versions. You should upgrade to either a recent nightly or the 7.1.0 RC. You could find an older image somewhere but there isn't much of a point as you would have to redo it all anyway so why not upgrade? Plus your battery life will improve by a lot as 7.1 RC and the nightlys have deep sleep.

As I said many times to newbie who runs CM7 off uSD that do not or should not mess up with ROM Manager. In fact, there are members also confirm that if booting off uSD, ROM Manager has no effect.
Based on what you, OP, described, you had flashed the CwM into the internal memory.
Keep your fingers crossed as I do hope you didn't screw up anything else.
Anyway, using verygreen's 1.3 image along with the latest nightly-built CM7 and the latest 06132001 gapps and boot it off uSD again. You should be fine.
Before that, fix your home wireless network first.
I decided to just go with 7.1RC1 since I wanted the better battery life. Is there a way to check about the CWM on the internal and how would I go about removing it if I did? I ask for warranty purposes ofcourse since I opted for the 2 year extended one. Also to flash upgrades and such, since you don't recomend using ROM manager then how should I go about doing it (i.e. overclocking kernel)?

1. I never have any issue related to battery with any nightly build that I've ever used. I am currently having the nb153 and it is fantastic.
2. Check CwM and how to remove off the internal memory? I don't know any quick way except restoring the original ROM.
Again, for warranty purposes, strongly suggest running off uSD
3. Updating by loading/copying/dragging the updated files onto the root folder (aka "boot" partition), then TRY loading into Recovery by:
a. combination of power/N buttons if you have skill or
b. let it boot normally into CM7, wait until completely loaded, then reboot and select "recovery" option. Keep yr fingers crossed. This is an easy method but if it doesn't work then option a is the only choice.
Sorry the battery issue was as compared to the current CM7 stable not the nightly. I got everything installed so far besides the overclock kernel. So I will try your recommendation for booting into recovery not using ROM manager.
You don't flash anything when running off an sd card you just boot into recovery and then reboot. Easiest way to get the overclock kernel would be to just upgrade to the latest nightly.
