[Q] This question will only take a second! - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
I was using my Mytouch 4g and wondered the other day, if there would ever be an update? I am pretty much a noob and running Android 2.2.1. This is probably a stupid question, but is there an update for the Mytouch 4g and is it worth it if there is? What are some specs? Also I am not rooted, do I need to be rooted?
THANK YOU for any answers possbile,
Justin

It would only take a second to take a look at General section and see if there are any threads that contain words "official" and "update" in their names

Thanks! Before I update do you think it is worth it? What are some changes?

I'm sorry but one more quick question, will you be able to use HTC Sense?

don't update if you want to root
If you want to root and change stuff then stay with 2.2.1 as far as i know there is no way to perm root 2.3.4 yet, if not update. As for you question about HTC sense its Tmobiles version like you have now.

Yes... The myTouch 4G is powered by HTC Sense with an overlay called T-Mobile mySense, aka espresso Sense.

SO.
I just rooted using the Unrevoked 3.2 and #009 update.zip (thanks attn1!).
I have a couple questions:
1.when got to manage apps-
Why do I still have these left over files which look like what was removed during the root and how do I get rid of them ie. com.ulocate?
2.Updating OS:
Is this possible when a phone is rooted? Or am I missing something?

Froyo is the latest version of the Android OS. Currently the only way to get Froyo on the Aria is flashing CM6 on the phone.
It's really not a question of "Do you need it?" more so, "Do you want it?"
I updated about a month ago to CM6 and it was a small learning curve from HTC Sense UI to the Android UI. I haven't felt the need to go back to the Sense UI, both have their ups and downs.

That link is a pretty good read. Hope that helps a little! As for your first post... I don't know the answer to the first question, but the 2nd is Yes, you can still update (that is when AT&T allows a 2.2 update) even though you are rooted.

HTC Sense on T-Mobile G2

Hi all,
Can anyone try to install HTC Sense on T-Mobile G2, is it possible?
Pls tell me how can and how I get HTC Sense for G2.
Thanks
Look for a custom ROM with Sense built into it on the dev forum.
Root your G2 with the rooting procedure back in the Development Forum for the Vision/G2.
Go to this and find one that your comfortable with: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=758#

Nice find! I'll sticky this for a couple weeks and we'll see where it goes from here.
Yes, hopefully we will get a proper version of the 2708 Radio for the 1.2
Cool, I'll be unrooting the wife's phone for this.
O.T.A. for My Touch 3g Fender/1.2
Okay this thread is for the My Touch 1.2/Fender OTA to be released 1/12/11. If you have any insight as to what we need to do to "catch" this update please post here. I know a lot of people are going to say the Magic OTA has already been released but this is a different phone that was not included in the first update and I'm sure the Magic forum Moderator knows this better than most. Does anyone know for sure if we can just be on the stock Fender ROM with root and still receive the OTA? Any information regarding this topic is welcome please post for the rest of us!
JeffakaJeff and I have custom build of this update for people who want root and the update go here.

They are not the same the Fender/1.2 is a 32a but they use the EBI0 kernel like the 32b Dream. From what I have seen the 32a Magic use the EBI1 kernel (correct?).

You guys must have issues reading and searching. Not only has this been discussed... but I started an entire new thread just for this phone. And because I knew that would not be enough... I started a WHOLE new thread dedicated to the update just for this phone. Hell, I even made them stickies! Yet... here we are.
I merged your thread in with the appropriate topic already in discussion.

Does anyone know for sure that's necessary? I've heard that being on Binary's deodexed fender with root would suffice to receive the update. Anybody know for sure?
I know nobody want's to talk about it but that damn keyboard is the only reason I'm doing this to begin with.

Logcat to get update links

Use logcat (search this forum) to capture the download link(s).
Expecting three separate zip files we collectively need links for. First should be new hboot/radio package. Second will be the ROM package for each device (one for for 1.2 and one for Fender.)
Edit: No more than two files, we already have hboot and a radio update (if any) would be packaged with the ROM itself. - K
Now what I want to know is will this keep my phone from rebooting when I get a Gmail or SMS notification while using Google Nav and Pandora radio at the same time?
Kind Regards,
Kevin

So being hooked to ADB running DDMS will give you the links?
I unrooted the wifes phone to make sure it catches the update. I'll be sticking with CM 6.1. I'm going to have her not do the updates when she gets prompted so I can pull the links. I don't imagine we'll see an SPL update, but I'm thinking we might get the new radio. We'll see, unless its in that announcement from T-Mobile already.

I'm going to try the stock Fender w/root. A while back I un-rooted and re-rooted but with the UniversalAndroot this time, so I should show up as stock if I am on 1.6 and my build.prop is right. Anybody know of an app that would store logcat on sdcard?

I found a nice one in the market and the best thing about is after testing the logcat won't start when I start the app it will have information from long before the app starting point so this should work nicely.- See the update message start the logcat and it should go back far enough to include when the message was sent and any temporary cache download links (lets hope) This should get me the first one till I get home and hook to my computer-will running the ddms during the update process get any subsequent links?

I'll add some tags in a few minutes.
If you are just using the stock just for the Swype keyboard you can look into SlideIT. Can't remember how much it costs but it's pretty much the same thing. Really. Some may even argue that it's better.
Regarding the update for the rooted stock roms... you should be able to get the update still. My theory is that the rom, spl and radio would be the only thing to get the update. Rom (stock), SPL, (1.33.0013), radio (2.22.23.02) possibly kernel. If any of these are different then you may not get the update. Another theory of mine is that it may require a certain build.prop file. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure that I used the same build.prop file in my rooted stock rom. So either way I don't see why you wouldn't still get the update.
Looks like I need to find a flashable 2.23.XX radio I switched to the 2708 radio when it came out.

Anything to read a logcat will work. Download links should look something like below:

[Q] How to get stock android 2.3.4 on mytouch 4g

I recently got a new a new MyTouch 4G since my other one got lost.
The new one has 2.3.4 with HTC Sense. I wanted to root my phone, but found out that I would have to downgrade and do a bunch of other stuff. Now I don't care if it is rooted or not. I would just like to have HTC sense with all the bloated software removed and just have Stock Android 2.3.4. This is also my first time here. Can anyone help? Thanks
PS: My previous mytouch 4g was rooted and was running 2.3.4. Mod version RoyalGinger 3.0
You have to "downgrade and do a bunch of other stuff".
Or leave it as is.
No third option.

HBOOT 2.8 With S-OFF but it still say's i have S-ON
i just put Smelkus Amon Ra-Supersonic-4.3 recovery on it.
it's not letting me post the link because i am a new user and cant post links until i make over 10 post.
But its HTCEVOHACKS Guide for people that need to root HBOOT-2.18.0001
Probably the easiest thing to do is follow the instructions on how to downgrade your Hboot and just leave it at that. You'll lose root and have s-on, and you'll also get rid of the watermark in the bootloader screen that indicates that it's unlocked. Follow the steps in this guide to downgrade your Hboot:

What is the difference between S-ON and S-OFF?
Also where can i get the default rom for my phone for when i turn it back in to upgrade.
Or when i unroot my phone and downgrade my hboot will it set it all back to normal?
and thank you for the help i appreciate it.

Essentially, s-on is "security on", and vice-versa. Having s-off allows you the ability to flash things like radios to your phone. As far as the stock ROM, there are links to two different stock Sprint ROM's (sometimes also referred to as RUU or ROM Upgrade Utilities) in that thread I linked you to. Just pick one. Since you won't be rooting it again it won't matter, and a Sprint rep won't know that the ROM on your phone isn't the one it came with to begin with.

Along the lines of the original issue, will Sprint activate a rooted phone or do they actively check to see if it's rooted before activating? Just curious b/c I have an extra one I'm selling and it's still rooted.
Yes i have another question too, if i unroot my phone is it perminitly unrooted? Or would i be able to re root it.
Just helpfull for the future if i decide to root whatever phone i upgrade too.

No it's not permanent. You can root again after unrooting. A lot of people will unroot to take their phone in for service or warranty claims and then root it again after it's fixed.

Nope, not permanent at all. You could do it every morning when you woke up, if you wanted to.
