ARIA : Post Root discussion - HTC Aria General

SO.
I just rooted using the Unrevoked 3.2 and #009 update.zip (thanks attn1!).
I have a couple questions:
1.when got to manage apps-
Why do I still have these left over files which look like what was removed during the root and how do I get rid of them ie. com.ulocate?
2.Updating OS:
Is this possible when a phone is rooted? Or am I missing something?

OH and..
What is Froyo and do I need it?

Froyo is the latest version of the Android OS. Currently the only way to get Froyo on the Aria is flashing CM6 on the phone.
It's really not a question of "Do you need it?" more so, "Do you want it?"
I updated about a month ago to CM6 and it was a small learning curve from HTC Sense UI to the Android UI. I haven't felt the need to go back to the Sense UI, both have their ups and downs.

That link is a pretty good read. Hope that helps a little! As for your first post... I don't know the answer to the first question, but the 2nd is Yes, you can still update (that is when AT&T allows a 2.2 update) even though you are rooted.

New G2 Touch (Hero) - need your help.

Hi guys,
I have got my G2 Touch (Hero) sat at home waiting for me and cannot wait to get back and play with it.
I was hoping you guys could help me with the following questions though:
1. How do I know if I should bother rooting it or not? If I root at a later date will I lose all of my other stuff on the phone?
2. How do I know if I have Donut on my phone and if I don't, should I root first or update to donut first?
3. Is there a list of "mush have apps" on the forum... I've spent all day reading articles on "must haves" but was hoping for "real life" feedback from you guys on what I must get.
Thanks

be prepared to wipe everything, as this is the solution for 95% of all problems (people not wiping before upgrade). don't you dare to ask for help before you wiped and reflashed afaik you can get root access without wiping, but i am pretty sure you are going to want a custom rom like modacos rom, and this almost inevitably means you have to wipe.
in q&a there is a thread for what you can do with root. it is not really complete, another try is to search for "root" in the market. most applications that need root access are found by this, so you can see what you could do if you where rooted.

easy one. there is no donut rom for hero (except for a custom one here on the forum, which does not _really_ work), so you don't have it on your phone. imho: don't bother updating to donut rom, unless you know what you are doing.

what about the thread called "must have apps on your Hero" here in the themes&applications section? i don't think it will get any better than that... you need to do the reading yourself, you won't find a post that says "here is a zip with the ten apps you need to be happy" (well maybe you will find it, but i doubt that actually will be happy with it).

Hi kendong2, thanks for the response...
I have read about this update on tmobile's website...
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=SOFTWAREDOWNLOADS&tab=2
If this isn't the Donut update, is it just an updated version of the original rom?

It isn't Donut - it is just the T-Mobile version of the 2.73 ROM. Since your phone is very new, it probably already has it anyway, but to check go to Menu-> Settings -> About Phone, and check the build number. If it starts 2.73, you've already got the updated ROM.
If you get a 1.xx build number, my advice would be *not* to install the T-Mobile update as it will make it much harder for you to move to a custom ROM at a later date. You should download and install a generic 2.73 that has been pre-rooted.

Dave

Hi again guys...
Checked my Touch last night and it is on 1.76
I'm a bit weary about rooting and installing generic / custom roms for fear of voiding the warranty and then owning a £500 brick...
Will updating to 2.73 from tmobile really make it harder to move to a custom rom later....?

Put it this way -if you upgrade to 2.73 via the T-Mobile RUU, in order to move to a custom ROM in future you will have to "downgrade" to a generic HTC 2.73 ROM via a Goldcard (see here) which is much more complicated when you've already got a ROM on your phone which is "exploitable".
The other thing you should bear in mind is that when Android 2.0 is released for the Hero, it will likely first come out as a ROM for unbranded phones with operator branded versions following some time later. This is what happened when 2.73 was released, and T-Mobile in particular was quite tardy in getting its own version out.
So, if you want to go to Android 2.0 sooner rather than later, you should look at a non-T-Mobile version of 2.73 now.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks very much for the advice guys, going to do as you suggested.
Unfortunately I have more questions though:
1. to load the generic 2.73 I just "oneclickroot" (found the video on youtube to follow) and then download the theme and rename it "update.zip" put this onto your memory card, turn off your phone then press and hold the "home" button while pressing the power button.... keep the "home" button down until you get to the recovery screen then select flash the update.zip as you would a rom. Is that right or have I missed anything?
2. Having a Tmobile G2 Touch rather than a Hero won't make any difference to the rom that I choose will it?
3. Will putting a new rom on lose my contacts or widgets / scenes etc?
4. Can you recommend a nice rom to go for, like what you guys are using? Want it to look nice, be stable but fast
Cheers again for the help guys.
Answers!
1. Can't help here as I didn't use the one-click method.
2. No.
3. Yes. However, if you've synced your contacts to Google, you will get them back again once you set the phone up again.
4. Modaco - nuff said.
Regards,
Dave
For a newbie I can recommend 'the unlockr'-Google it- they have easy to follow vids for rooting and flashing roms for the hero. It's really easy and you won't brick your phone if you have half a brain cell.

Options for Official Sprint 2.1

Hey Guys,
My wife has had the official Sprint 2.1 on her phone for a month or so and has had nothing, but problems. I am sure she would love to go back to stock 1.5 and I know she really doesn't want me to root her phone, but I am just wondering what options I have to get her something more stable. Her phone really has worked horrible since the update, I have been on various 2.1 roms for months and have not had near the problems she has had. Thanks for any ideas.

i say go ahead and root it. i was so scared when i rooted mine but it was all pretty easy. and its almost impossible to brick your phone. and then flash this rom
its the stock 2.1 rom just rooted and literally no issues and a major speed increase. my 2cents
It is not an issue of me rooting her phone. My phone is rooted and has been forever. I flash roms all the time. She does not want her phone rooted, but if that is the only option I might be able to convince her. However I am not convinced anything stock even with root would be a good option.

That is your only option. The way HTC designed this phone you cannot downgrade back to 1.5 unless HTC put out a new RUU to do so(which isn't going to happen).
If she wants 1.5 then you have to root to do so.
My wife didnt want me to root her samsung moment. I did it anyways, and she couldnt be happier. Have it overclocked as well.
Just dont tell the wife...they'll never know. Woman don't like technology change. You have to override that.

I was going to say the same thing. Just root it and flash a ROM and say here you go. She can always run the 2.1 RUU again.
See, your problem is, you need your Wife to be rooted so you can have SU access.
Once you do that, then you can root her phone.....
Well I can tell she is frustrated, when she just looked at me and said "I don't care just get it fixed." Now I just need to read up on how to root a stock 2.1 since I did mine back at 1.5.

Epic 4g froyo help~!

I got the Epic 4g thinking it would be easy to get Froyo on here. With all these options and additional downloads...i am confused and ready to give up~!. At this point ill take any help....or should i wait for them to push it out agian?
So you are running stock 2.1? Getting 2.2 can be very easy or a little harder depending on your choice. Do you want to go to stock 2.2 or would you like to go to one of the custom roms running 2.2?
I am running stock right now. I'm looking for froyo 2.2 Main reason are for Skype and Flash.

If you just want stock 2.2.1, then go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963652
I think you can start from step 11.
I am unsure if your data will be preserved with this method. Might want to wait for someone who knows more than I to answer that.
Thanks for taking the time to look into this.
Its working now.....
You got it all working? The way I went to stock 2.2 was very easy and preserved all of my data, the zip method, but if you got out done then it sounds like you are good to go?

Rooting

So I just received the gingerbread update from t-mobile.
I was wondering since this is the new update, what would be the way to root this phone. I mainly want to uninstall the bloatware. also after rooting and removing bloatware. Can you undo the root and still keep the bloatware off?
Yes this is a noob android question, but your help is appreciated!
This thread will help you immeasurably if you want to do anything to your phone.

The rooting methods there should work fine for you. I personally recommend this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021
because of the fact that it's mainly meant for people who are just getting started in the world of rooted phones.
Hopefully all this helps you out
There is no way to root with the update as of yet.
Is there a way to make the phone force check update

Hmmm, well that sucks. I guess at best all you could do is downgrade your phone to Froyo with PD15IMG, root your phone there with whatever method you prefer, and then upgrade back up to Gingerbread using a a custom rom like CyanogenMod or something.
If the Sense features are what make you want to keep the stock rom, then I recommend you upgrade to Virtuous Unity 1.31. It's got Sense 3.0 on it, and that's got pretty much all the sense features you'll ever want or need, and it runs pretty damn well if you ask me.

No, you can downgrade anyway. There's a thread that I've linked to in at least 3-4 posts only today, that explains how to do it.

[Q] Stock G2 2.3.4, want to Root, what is the best way??

Title says it all...Finally thinking about rooting, but I dont know it its possible yet since I got the 2.3.4 update. Can someone point me in the right direction please? All the posts I found are kind of old.
Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206930 must have S-OFF before you update to 2.3.4 or you will have to downgrade to 2.2 turn S-OFF then patch again to 2.3.4 then root...
Damn, no other way huh? I don't feel like downgrading, guess I'll wait till there is another way...lol. Thanks for the response!

Desire Z 2.3.3 ROOT
Hi,
I am using EU version of G2 (desire Z) with htc official gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM. I am also new in this so downgrading to 2.2 isn't option for me. Does anybody knows if there will be some simplyfied way to root desire z 2.3.3 (one click root or something like that) somwhere in near future.
Thanks for reply!

Well considering that there isn't even a reliable one-click root for the 2.2 release (and even farther from one-click for the European version) I'd highly doubt that you're going to see a one-click for the 2.3 release any time soon, if at all.
Just because you're new doesn't mean that downgrading isn't an option for you! Just do your research and follow the detailed guides and you'll be fine. It may take some time for you to build up some confidence to do it, but when its done you'll be glad you took the time to learn a lot about the device as you learned to root it the hard way.

i'm afraid there's no other way for now, you have to downgrade to older version which had root method already.
Not a temproot? I think I have seen a topic for temproot of G2, but no responses from anybody who has tried, so I don't want to be first to try.
I wish only to remove annoying ADS, all the rest is fine with 2.3.4.
Because you said that I might have to wait a long time to get one click solution I have decided to give it a try and root my phone:
firstly I have downgraded my software with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
and than root it with this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision
and than install Virtuous 2.0 ROM with Rom Manager
I had no problems and everything works nice now.
But still I would like to change some things on my phone and I hope someone could give me some directions how to do it.
1) firstly I would like to delete/hide stock battery icon from notification bar becazse I use ZDBox to monitor battery. I have found this tread on this forum but I am not shure if this method works for Desire Z with this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740502
Does prhaps anyone knows how to do that with Virtuous 2.0 ROM on Desire Z
2)secondly I would like to ask you which ROM do you suggest to try out.
I really like how MIUI ROM looks like and how much free RAM you get with this rom but as I was reading comments about it it seem that there is no landscape orientation in this ROM. Does this issue apply only for launcher or are systam apps like sms app or email app also only in portrait mode.
thanks for answers and ideas

1) you can use the uot kitchen to create a theme with whatever battery icon you like.
2) i would suggest cm7, by far the best rom in my opinion, fast and stable and always have the theme chooser to change it up. if your looking for a sense rom though i would go with the synergy port.
