Is 500 minutes enough for you?
I only have 45 minutes remaining for the last 2.5 weeks of my billing cycle. For me, some months I use a lot some months not so much. This worked out great on my iPhone with AT&T's rollover minutes. I had nearly 2000 minutes saved up.
It doesn't appear that T-Mobile will even let us upgrade to a plan with more minutes.
I have tried using voip with sipdroid, but it is unreliable.
Trying to brace myself for a large bill....
I'm told that you have an additional 500 forwarding min, so if you forward your number to a different phone, work phone, home phone.
Not really the best solution, but its there.
I'm torn because I live on the edge of 500 min every month (currently on a myfaves plan). Going to the even more plus 500 plan would save me 20 bucks a month. If i can stay under 500 min that is.

LOL are you kidding??
NEVER change your plan!
MyFaves + Google Voice = 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 minutes!!! (Unlimited)
I can't believe you don't have that set up?? I did that on day 1 of GV being introduced on my G1!
I was given the option to upgrade my plan the first time I called T Mo to set up my visual voicemail. Call back. The option should be available.
so if i use my google voice # to make/received calls, i am not charged minutes?
that doesn't sound right.......?
(assuming i am making receiving calls during peak non-unlimited times)

If you have a MyFaves plan, you can put 5 phone numbers to call to and receive calls from, unlimited talking.
So put your GV # and you get unlimited minutes!!!
na....i just switched to tmob, so no myfaves......oh well

Right, I'm just saying to the above guy and anyone else with MyFaves, switching off of a MyFaves plan with an Android phone is absolutely INSANE
lol on my T-mobile Austria contract, I have 2000min all around Europe, 1000min to T-mobile and Box, 1000 sms, and 3gb at HSDPA 7,2 for 24€ at all fits perfect with my Nexus one!
I think it´s not to bad

Yeah, I'm aware of this. Don't currently use it that way just because I don't get anywhere near my min. And really, my plan is only $5 cheaper a month than the fully unlimited everything plan from tmo. 39.99 (myfav 300) + 34.99 (G1 data+unlimited text) = 74.98/mo + 10 ish in taxes/fee's = $84.98/mo

Ah, my data plan is $24.99. Why are you paying for texts? GV does free unlimited texting too ; )
They will let you upgrade your plan, they just won't let you downgrade.
They are not gonna turn down more money if you want to give them more money.
resisting change, haven't given out my GV number really. I dunno, been debating for a while want I've been wanting to do about my plan.
TMO Unlimited Talk $49.99
Unlimited Data $19.99
Loving my N1
Loving the NEW GV Group feature fro sms.

Debated this for a long time as well, and finally made the switch a couple of weeks ago. It's almost as if I didn't switch at all. I forwarded my new number to anyone that actually texts me. Those that don't, don't need the new number. Those that do text, and thus, got the new number, have cell phones, so all they're doing is changing the number in their phone to the new one. It's not as if they have to memorize your new number (who does that anymore?!). My plan switches to the 500 minute plan on the 14th, and including the money I save from switching plans and dropping the text plan, I'll save $20-30 a month. I do wish I'd switched to MyFaves when I had the chance though...
My wife is under contract to ATT for iphone. I left ATT for unlocked N1 on TMobile with 500 min everything plus plan. We were used to calling each other w/o regard to minutes as it was all "free." I signed up for Skype Out subscription to US/Canada for $2.95 plus vat/euro tax/whatever of .72 per month. Also had to buy $10 worth of credit to send 2 sms to get cell # on the Skype caller id. Installed fring and call her on skype out via fring. About a 2 second delay when we are both in our living room plus its a little tinny sounding. She knows to be prepared for the delay unless its the weekend If android ever gets a full skypeout app then quality and lag should be better.
I didn't change my plan at all. The 500 minute plan would have been a step back for me with how much they wanted compared to what I currently have, so I bought mine unsubsidized.
Unlimited minutes - $49.99
Unlimited data/text - $34.99
So.....$84.98 + taxes/fees each month.
As a college student the 500 minutes seem to be enough for me, mostly i text in the day and call during the unlimited nights and weekends, i still have 400 mins left til the 20th.
I just upgraded my minutes today tmobile upgraded me to 1000 minutes for 10 bucks more a month quick and easy no issues.
Yep and I have been told by a T-mobile rep that once you are out of the 120 Handset recovery period (Google's) you can do whatever you want with your plan so long as you dont cancel service. You can upgrade or downgrade as you need!
What recommendations do you folks have for the best smartphone I can use on Verizon without a data plan? Verizon-branded phones manufactured after November 08 are forced to use the data plan. I am looking for a way around this. (I only need wi-fi) Is there a phone from another carrier I could sneak onto Verizon with minimal effort and that I could find used for under $200? I was thinking about a Touch Pro but can't find up-to-date directions on how to do this and not trigger the data plan. My thanks to you.
hTC TP2 get it from sprint or verzon, you can buy it off of ebay or craigslist.org
good luck
Just wanted to post my experience. I was planning to do the same thing. The best phone I could find made before then was the samsung sch-i760. I would have gotten the htc touch but it didn't have wifi which makes it useless without a data plan. I was planning to do the same thing as you. I bought the phone in May of last year but didn't get around to activating it until August or so. When I brought the phone in they said they had changed the rules from after October of 08 to all smart phones period. Soooo, didn't quite work out. Moral of the story is ask the Verizon salesperson first.
In theory you can activate **ANY** Verizon Wireless smartphone without being billed for a data plan. First, some background: A friend of mine had a Verizon iPhone that he lost at the movies one Friday night. As soon as he got home, he logged into his account and did an ESN swap to a Samsung Gusto so he could at least be able to make calls. Lo and behold when he got his bill, Verizon had billed his 150 some megabytes used on Friday at $1.99 per megabyte. Now we all know that nobody in there right mind would be using 150 megabytes on a sorry flip phone and in fact my friend didn't use ANY mb on the Gusto. He was able to get credit for the data use since it was clearly used on the iPhone and should have been included in his unlimited data plan. The Verizon rep explained that they bill by the day that he would have had to wait till after midnight on Friday to activate the basic phone to allow his data to be billed under his smartphone plan. No worries since they credited him the full amount, but when he told me, it got me thinking...
I realized that if he wanted the iPhone (or any other smartphone) just for the quality of the phone and did not want to use or pay for Verizon data that he could simply activate the smartphone in the morning, use it all day (with the mobile network turned off of course) and then activate a basic phone at night with no data plan. It could get tedious swapping esn's 60 times a month, but supposing it were automated this could work quite nicely.
What if the "night" phone were the Home Phone Connect on a $19.99 unlimited minute plan? Would that give unlimited minutes for 20 bucks on an iPhone? I suppose the "night" phone could be a basic phone on the $10 75 megabyte plan if one wanted just a tiny bit of data.
I don't have Verizon and my friend won't try it because he needs his unlimited data and he doesn't have WiFi access. If anybody tries this, be sure to post your success or failure story.

I can't see that lasting very long. I'm sure Verizon would eventually ask you WTF you're doing.
What y'all are talking about doing is highly illegal and could result in some pretty hefty fines from the fcc xda does not condone this and this thread will probably be locked in the near future.

There is no way around it, pretty much have to have a data plan w/ verizon.
I had the G1 like two years ago. I've been using an iphone for a while then i decided to switch back to the Samsung Vibrant. Which i received yesterday. When i had the G1 they had 3G + Texting plans. one was 25 the other was 35. What happened to those? Now i read that there's only Android data for 30 with no texting and unlimited texting is 15 dollars. so that's 45 dollars a month. is there a way to get back the cheaper 35 dollar for unlimited 3g and texting? thanks!
Just call customer care before you swap it and ask them to keep you on the old plan. Once you're grandfathered in most reps will help you keep the plan.
oh, after i switched the the iphone i canceled the 35 dollar plan. now i plan on switching back. is it still possible?
Nope. Once you take it off you lose it. I remembered when the sidekick data was 20. They grandfathered that price over to my newer sidekick at the time. But they said if u cancel it you lose that price and at the time the price went up to 35. When I got the g1 I paid that price. I continued to pay that price even when I went to the iphone knowing they might raise the price. Sure enough u are mentioning about an increase. I still hold the 35 data price with txt. Man that sux they raised the price

Just call them and tell them that you never cancelled, that they missed interpreted you.. you just wanted to "check" and for some reason they took it off... now you got the vibrand and there is no reason why you have to pay 45 for tex+web when you've always paid 35 (or whatever) that you need them to put it back as its supposed to be since you never took it out (blame it on them LOL)
I have t-mobile since 2001 (used to be voicestream) and I pay 25 for data+tex unlimited.. they will always granfather you the low price if you complain and show that you have been with them for a while
I have a Blackberry supplied by my employer. I can't use it for personal e-mail and Web content is very limited. I'd like to get a smart phone for personal use but wouldn't use it enough to warrant a full plan under my wireless carrier (AT&T). Does anyone have any pay-as-you-go or cheap data-only plan and carrier suggestions? My MB usage would be low as it's really just for e-mail and a small amount of Web use. I'm located in Florida.
i wud say THREE 3 , there best for price plans , but signal isnt all that well . its certain areas .
i pay 15 pound a month and get 600 mins, 3000 texts, 1gb internet . i dont use 600 mins so i wanna go down to £10 a month 300 mins 3000 texts 1gb internet .
hope this helped
just seen ur in florida . sorry , any1 else this may help
three do a good deal for 15.00 a month like the other poster states , but it now offers unlimited internet (yep truely unlimited) same minutes and texts etc, good deal , plus if you buy through say quidco or topcashback websites , you will get a nice rebate also
Virgin Mobile may be your best bet. $25 for unlimited text, data, email etc. and 300 minutes.

three in uk is best for data plan..
I have the £15 month all you can eat (its not unlimited as most think see the terms and conditions) 80gig data a month yep 80 gig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have the normal pay and go topup monthly (not rolling contract) which is 300 mins 3000 texts and 80gig a month the rolling contract is 600 mins and 6000 texts and 80gig a month data.. its £15 no matter which plan you go for..., so pick best for you.
signal is not always the best but data speed is best every had. And does tend to work most every where I go(inc most mountain areas but not all but this is same across the networks)....
word of warning they will soon be stopping the all you can eat sim!!!(friend works for them and told me after I bought it) so get it whilst you can...
Sometimes I wish I was in the UK but I am in the States (Florida). Virgin seems to be the best bet for now. I will go by a local AT&T store to see if they will offer me an unadvertised deal, though. Thanks!
Florida resident here, I'm with tmobile, have 5 phones and a broadband stick. Pay about $200 a month, data, unlimited voice and text on even more plus plan. I'm decently happy with the service. For me, I work at a car dealership, and tmobile gives me a discount for being a "Kia" employee although I technically work for many different dealerships.
Straight Talk I think would be a good choice for you. They have a nice $30/month plan that would work well for you. Check out the Howard Forums Straight Talk threads for info on how to use one of their sim cards in a phone of your choice.
AT&T just took away my unlimited data plan since I upgraded to a Nexus One... I will likely be switching to Straight Talk at the end of the month.
Edit: I forgot to mention that they use AT&T's towers!
If all of this is true Straight Talk may just take over the market I know once get my hands the right equipment they might just win me over!!

Looking for a no contract plan with decent amount of minutes (preferably at least 200/250 per month) and unlimited texting. Data doesn't really matter to me that much as I'm almost always near Wifi.
Any suggestions?
I'm currently eyeing the T-Mobile $30 no contract plan that includes 100 min., unlim. texting, and unlim. data (4G speeds up to 5 GB) but the minutes seem like they won't be enough and the next level of plans is the $50 unlimited everything.
Is there anything comparable to this from services like Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, and such that's easy on the wallet? (Broke college student)
I also need it to use swappable SIM cards (GSM) similar to the prepaid T-Mobile plan described above, unlike Metro PCS, Boost, and such because I like to fiddle with various phones (the XDA community knows a little about this addiction
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Note: I'm located in Southern California (LA area) if it matters.
Virgin Mobile for $35, you get 300 minutes and unlimited web, data messaging, and email.
EDIT: Oops NVM, you wanted swapable SIMS, in that case, there is Red Pocket Mobile. You can bring your own GSM phone and it's $30 for 250 minutes voice and unlimited text, 10 MMS, and 10 MB data (better make sure you use WiFi). I think they use AT&Ts network.
man did not even kno about red pocket mobile

Thanks adelmundo, Red Pocket sounds like a good option, but I think people get the most bang for the buck with the $30 T-Mobile one for smartphone users. I really don't talk on the phone that much but like I said, 3.33 minutes per day seems too little. But I think they have like a fixed rate per minute if you go over the 100 minutes (I'm not sure what exactly that rate is) but even if you go over, it still be less than $45/$50, beating a lot of the 2-year contract plans out there.
PS: Awesome avatar!
my T mobile plan is unlimited everything and it is 75 per month. For me it works pretty well I do around 100-200 texts average,,, 3500 min + phone average and around 5-7 gig of internet......... the thing to consider with some of the off brand or smaller sub companies is if you travel at all they totally suck on coverage and speed. So, for me Tmobile is a good choice. But... if you just stay in one location basically, then the smaller companies would be good enough. It all depends on what you need.
