how to determine a SD card class ? by it's speed by mbps ?
it should be a little number on the upper side of the card.
2,4,6, or 10
or take test.

If you can see number inside the circle, that's the SDcard class..
thanks, and what's good for x8 ? class 6 ?

damn, I have class 2 card
Its ok, you can buy new one next time with higher class..
I think you can check by using sd tools on the market. Generally the average write speed should be the class of the sd card. E.g. 2 MB per second is class 2 but i don't think this works if you have second partition on sd card or if app is on sd card.

Card class does not reflect read and write speed. Sd tools will show write speed of 6.5mbs and read speed of 21.5mbs on my 8gb class 2.

I currently have a 2Gb class 2 micro sd card.
What is the best class and size for speed and battery consumption?
I was thinking about something like this class 10 card: http://www.mymemory.co.uk/SDHC/Transcend/Transcend-8GB-SD-Card-(SDHC)---Class-10-
Anyone know if there are any fast low power cards that will work effectively?
Class 6 is enough. Just buy a Sandisk or some other reputable brand

isnt it possible to put the android rom on the mobile memory directly to improve speed'n stuff ?
The card you are looking at is an SD. You need a microSD.

8GB Class 6... Can't go wrong

D'oh! class 10s are a fortune! class 6 it is.........
Does it make a difference in terms of Phone performance (Note: Not asking about connecting to a PC for data transfer) for having a External SD card if compare to having Class 5 to better class?

I can't answer for sure but if the sotware sd card speed tester is correct mine is very quick (8/11) and i didn't get a very high score at quadrant benchmark with the minocan fix
Now this benchmark is hard to analyse
It would, theoretically, make a difference if you are using a data on SD mod like minocan's fix. Even then I haven't seen a huge difference between people using cheap class 2 cards and people using class 6 cards. Hell, some class 2 cards are as fast as class 6 cards already. You should test the card you have before you buy a new one.
If you're not doing any mods that put the data folder on the SD card, then for the most part no, your SD card is only accessed to store things like pictures or movies, and even only then if you choose to use the external card.
Also, MicroSD cards come in Class 2, Class 4, and Class 6, and Class 10 speeds. Each number corresponding to their minimum write speed.
if i got the answer correct, you guys are saying its negligible, right?
And this applies towards Samsuing Galaxy S which install the application on Internal SD card... right?
Hi,
Does anybody here knows which class is the 8gb micro sd card included in the Desire Z??
Not 100% positive on this but I remember reading somewhere that it was only a class 2 card... =/
I got a class 4 card, but seems to be a bit of lottery.
I've read that some got class 2.
Mine was 8 GB, Samsung, Class 2. And it got replaced right away with a 16 GB Class 10.

Is there any point in a class 10?
Can the Z handle it? I know the Pulse has a limit of class 6...
Also - nice card.
Damm I hope I get a class 4 but how can you know which class is the sd card? Does it say on it?
Yes typically the card will have the class printed on it.
Remember though the class is a measurement of the MINIMUM speed the card is capable of handling.
Ex: Class 4 can write at a MINIMUM of 4 mb/s. I have a kingston class 4, 8GB card that I have tested thourougly and it regularly writes at 8+ mb/s.
Not sure where you draw the line on what is overkill for an Android Device. I know on other devices, I.E. SLR Cameras, a slow/bad card can have a big impact on the way things run...
Came with a Samsung Class 2 8GB for me, replaced it with an San Disk 16GB Class 4.

Yes, it can handle the Class 10. The only real benefit is when doing 720p video recording. Most of the time, anything over a Class 4 will feel the same in day-to-day usage (other than video recording).
The other advantage is that if you transfer files to the phone, it'll be somewhat faster.
Also, the card you get with the DZ, it show the class right on the card itself. In my case it was a Samsung 8GB MicroSDHC Class 2. Replaced with a Kingston 16GB MicroSDHC Class 10. <3
Here's a somewhat subjective read on the topic: http://pocketnow.com/android/does-using-a-faster-sdcard-make-your-phone-faster
I don't know if you can see the difference between Class 2 and Class 10 on the Desire Z. Maybe running some apps that install on SD Card is a little faster, also saving photos, browsing through MP3s, playing videos, etc.
When moving large quantities of data (bigger files), there is an increase in speed, e.g. 18 MB/s (Class 10) vs. 10-12 MB/s (Class 2). I expect the differencte to be the same with small files, but I haven't tested yet. Maybe it's not worth the double price tag, but I needed 16 GB and chose to go with the fastest option available...
Mine and everyone else I know with a Z or G2 came with a samsung 8gb class 2 card.
I have now put my 8Gb class 4 in, but I might look to get a bigger class 4 or 6 card soon.

HOLD FIRE on mymemory. This new card is giving read speeds of 10 mbs but write speed only 1 mbs!!!!!!!!!! I need to test in my Hero to see what I get.
Can anyone recommend good speed test apps, for either android or to run off my Windows lappy?
I got a SanDisk Class 4, 8GB card with mine (NAM Unbranded/Unlocked Version)
Tested it and it writes at 5.21 mb/s and reads at 14.8 mb/s
I have a micro sd 2gb card , its class 4. And i have problems when i install some roms with data on ext, and similar.. so i will buy a new one.
i need an advice from you.. Which card should i buy so i can get that my hd2 works normally with rom with data on ext ( i mean that the partition sd card to be the main memory for all that stuff on phone) ?

Size depends on your usage, you'll have to judge for yourself. I personally would stick to class 2 or 4, they perform as well if not better than class 10 cards for running SD Android, class 10s are only really good for large file transfers. Far more important than class is brand from what I've seen. SanDisk and other branded cards perform much better than unbranded cards (although this obviously comes at a higher price too).
I'd be very grateful if you could explain the contrary between this:

and this:
NativeSD (SD-EXT)
*For high speed read/write SD Card only (Class 6 or 10). Otherwise you may get poor performance.

Is the difference in NativeSD and usual SD roms?

I don't have class 2 micro sd card. Comparing class 4 G.skill and class 10 Sandisk on HD2 they are almost the same write speed to 5MB/s-7MB/s. but testing on PC, the class 10 is faster can reach 10MB/s write.
... but as we all know by now, the raw write speed of the card is no indicator of how well it will perform, since most files accessed are in the 4k filesize range, and many class 10 cards have TERRIBLE 4k block size read/write speed, whilst lower class cards ( 8, 6, 4) usually have better 4k random read/write speed.

Basically what samsamuel said. If you have the time, you could also read this thread from ny_limited, which explains a lot about SDs. It's in the Android general though so I don't know if it'll have anything about specifically running an OS from the SD card. Either way, he's very adamant on the NexusHD2 thread that class doesn't necessarily matter.
Hi,

Sandisk doing better than Samsung in SD, for higher performance, i use Sandisk UHS-I 8GB SD.
I used both NativeSD and DataonExt. My Scandisk Ultra 16G work fine.
Sandisk 10 class with UHS - hd2 incompatible
I tested 2 microsd cards(I bought in one place at once) with 2 different hd2.
first card worked with bouh hd2, but only 1-2 days => after freeze.
second card freezed at boot always, on both phones.
MD5 checksum was identical for both cards.
Both cards work very quickly with other devices without glitches.
Now i use 4.2.2 with transcend 10 class without UHS. HD2 is fast now, more than ever... A1 SD Bench: 18.9mb/s read, 10.5mb/s write.

I would strongly suggest checking out this thread.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947560
My SanDisk 32gb class 6 card reads about 10mbs higher than yours. My suspicion is that it's your buffer size that needs to be adjusted, but that thread is one of the best resources for optimizing you're card.

Do you test speed by "SD Tools" ? In this programm my transcend show 33mb/s, but it's cached speed, i saw same speed on 2 class card.
I agree what sandisk very fast. But cards with UHS not worked with my both hd2(512mb EU and RU versions )
SDTools seems to be the XDA standard from most when testing you're SD card. I find it very accurate and reliable.
