I've always loved the kickstand feature on the Evo (who doesn't?) but always hated that it could only hold up the phone one way, horizontally (unlike the Thunderbolt).
Also, I have been meaning to get a nice case for my evo but haven't been able to find a good one (not too bulky, not hard to take out of my pocket, doesn't prevent me from pushing the volume or power button etc.).
Is there such a case out there that has a kickstand much like the Thunderbolt and is compatible with the evo (has all the openings in the right places for the hdmi and usb) or is this just wishful thinking?
Just wishful thinking man, the kick stand is strictly horizontal for all cases there is really to reason for it to be able to have the phone vertical.

I just bought a nice, sleek case from www.elitextreme.com. It is fully enclosed, access to everything, and only cost $9. Throw on an InvisableShield and this thing is indestructible!

OtterBox Defender
I got an otterbox defender for my evo, as i am very rough on phones..I have to say it is hands down the best phone case i have ever seen/owned. it is a hard case, covered by a soft silicone case, and it is the only case that has a built in screen protector, and not some sticker. it also has a holster, which will allow you use the holster clip as a kickstand for vertical viewing, works great for horizontal also.. It is slightly bulky, but in my honest opinion it is about the best protection you can get for you phone/screen. There is no lag from the built in screen protector, it seems to be some kind of plastic membrane.. all ports/leds/camera's/speaker/mic are all open and accessible. If you are hard on your phone, or have bad luck scratching screens, this case is for you..
Being a noob i can't post outside links, but it is easily found searching otterbox on the net..

It is amazing
ports are well protected nice silicone with good bumps so it has nice grip. And after 3 days I didnt feel it bulky anymore when I take my phone out if feels alot smaller.
Its a bit expensive at 50 bucks but its really worth it I dropped it twice without worrying at all

Try the Trident. Like otterbox but not as bulky
Thanks for all the help! Come to think of it, I guess I don't really NEED the vertical kickstand feature. When I said not too bulky, I guess I was avoiding an Otter box response haha. I think I might try the trident though or the covers from elitextreme, Thank You once again!

You might also want to check out the Go Ballistic HC case: http://www.goballisticcase.com/products/htc-evo-ballistic-hc-series-case
it is better than the otterbox, it is smaller (without the optional silicone layer on the outside), still has the built in screen protector, slides in/out of a pocket (again without the optional silicone layer)
I have the ballistic case and I absolutely love it. its advertised to protect the phone from a five foot drop and my boyfriend is 6'2" and he dropped his down a flight of concrete stairs (he was holding it at his eye level) and there were no scratches and the case stayed on. Unlike the otterbox, the rubber doesn't get in the way of the charger.

Yes. Coolest case i have ever owned. Makes the phone feel like a tank in your hand.
The only thing I don't like as much is the soft rubber, it collects alot of dirt. At least for me. Other then that I love it.

just keep an eye out for the bottom rubber part. I've had mine for less than two months and it got really flimsy and it tore :/

I'm having this same problem right now - what I find is that after you put it back in to the plastic case, push it down a tad and it seems to un flimsy it for it a bit. I can tell it won't last though.
I wish there was a way to shrink the rubber piece so it fit like it did at first, that being said I'd buy it again if it breaks, it's the best evo case I've used.
Love my case. Had it a little over a month and the bottom rubber flap isn't flimsy on mine

Yeah, I've had my otterbox commuter case for about a week now. It's definitely the best case out there. It really makes the power and volume buttons more accessible. Anybody on the fence about this case, just get it - you won't be disappointed.

I'll have to agree with everyone, this case makes the phone feel very secure and protected. Yet it still slips right into my pants pockets. Now when ever I hold my wife's or anyone else's EVO it just feels so fragile, and i'm scared to drop it for fear of breaking it.
So I have to say this is the best case I ever had for any of my phones...
I liked my OtterBox Commuter case for my Evo so much I bought one for the Hero I gave to my girlfriend. She loves hers as well. The only problem is that she tried to put the screen protector on by herself and it was, well to be quite honest, a f***ing disaster.
Dont buy this sh*t,
The case broke my power button.
Stupid of me to think this was a good case.
All these reviews talking about how awesome the case is and then this. Seriously, how did it break your power button? The silicon case is the only thing that touches the power button. The hard plastic shell doesn't come anywhere near it. Did you drop your phone? Why was it stupid of you to think this would be a good case when it's one of the highest rated cases out there? I'm thinking your situation was a fluke, dude.
I have had the case for about two months with my phone and the only issue I have with it is the rubber piece that sticks out of the bottom like everyone else. I am curious as to how you think the case broke your power button as well?
I have heard that some people have been having issues with their power buttons in general but not because of the case.
So ya I just got my Commuter case the other day and could not be more pleased with it. Hands down one of, if not the best designed and well thought out cases on the market.
Like a lot of people I though a case like this would add extra bulk to our bulky friend. But I got to tell you, this case just fills RIGHT. I don't see myself removing this case any time soon.
What I mean by that is, I had a case for work( that HTC rubber one from Sprint) and a case for when I wasn't working(some 10$ thin plastic case from a mall cart).
This case is the best of both of them. It combines the protection of the HTC case with out the extra bulk and slickness of the thin plastic case from the mall.
Best money I've spent in a long time. Well worth paying even full price for it.
The bottom rubber flap sucks, its flimsy and it won't stay ! I think it's just a bad design... should have made it stick just the the flap they put over the headphones plug in.
Other than that, great case...
Ok so the OEM tmobile gel and plastic cases for the G2 are totally worthless. I've never seen a case made of such low quality and they want like 20 - 30 bucks for them.
i was curious to see if anyone bought anything good off ebay or elsewhere?
cheers

How can you say the T-mo gel is worthless? IMO, its the only one worth the money, and its only $16. It fits perfect, it feels good, and it protects GREAT.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I have both the gel case and the Bodyglove snap-on case.
I switch between them as the mood strikes me, but I'm somewhat more fond of the bodyglove case. The gel case adds somewhat more size to the phone and has a tendency to pull money/receipts/etc. along when I take it out of my pocket.
The bodyglove case is smaller, lighter, and allows access to the physical device buttons, whereas the gel case covers them and I find it sometimes difficult to hit the volume buttons, and exceedingly difficult to use the camera focus half-press.
I have the Protective Hard cover. Its a all clear plastic case with kickstand. It looks really nice and is a pain to take off.

LOL!
I have the Body Glove case. I like that it keeps it from slipping out of my hand or off the dash.
I have the t-mo gel case (the thicker $18 one) and I love it. I work next to a cell phone accessory kiosk and none of the other cases even come close to the protection AND quality of the t-mo one. Yeah it sucks when you need to pull it out of your pocket, but that can be said of any gel case.
I use the Maya case from Proporta. It's just a nice leather sleeve with a soft microfiber-like interior. I don't like having an actual case around my phone, but like to have it in the sleeve in my pocket to protect it from scratches and drops.
There is a nice body glove case w/out a clip and has a kinda disco pattern on it. Not bulky at all for being BG.

Picked one up on Ebay for $4 shipped and it fits great. Nice sleeve to protect the phone when its in my pockets from scratches. With a Skinomi screen protector on the screen, I know my phone is well protected.
I've got the Tmo metallic dark purple snap-on hard shell case. The stores were having (are still maybe?) a sale on accessories. I love the color more than I thought I would and it's definitely very good quality in my opinion. That being said, I wish it was a rubberized finish similar to the back battery cover of the G1, but I'll order a shell case like that soon.
I also made a "holder" for my G2 out of a Moleskine Memo Pocket (I left one pocket for my ID, credit cards, etc and cut the rest out carefully with an exacto knife then padded the interior with micro-suede). I just slip the phone in and it's protected from any other stuff rattling around in my purse. Or I can just add my ID and necessities for a quick carry-all.
I have both the bodyglove and the $16 case. The bodyglove case which protects the back half of the phone is great. But, the other front half of the case's frame is too thin and not durable. If you remove the case about once a day, the snaps will give out or just not catch anymore. Also the cutout to the camera makes it impossible for me to fit my finger in and focus the picture before taking it.(hold half way down to focus). The $16 case is perfect for me. There are no cut outs to the volume toggle or camera button so it allows you to apply slight force to focus then a full press of the button to take a picture. Also the bottom base of the front half wraps around the keypad for a more secure fit.
Take a look at this video I made, fast forward to 4:06 where I did a quick rant of the bodyglove case. Linked below. You'll see the sides of the case started to spread apart and peel off. The $16 which I've had on longer than the bodyglove does not give me any of those problems.

Getting my vibe tomorrow, and want to get some stuff to protect it. Since it is a giant piece of plastic, it must be vulnerable to damage moreso than other phones. I will be putting the phone in my pocket most often.
Suggestions: Are Hard or Gel or Silicon or TPU the best material for cases in terms of dropping and scratching? Should I get a screen protector (don't want to spend more than a few bucks on this).
Please leave a little description or note so it's easier to understand the reasoning for the product. Thanks!
I've looked at some suggestions so far, with 10$ for 2 screens and other various expensive stuff. I was wondering if the cheaper ebay stuff such as http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Clear-LCD-S...811631?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item43a4730aaf would still be good for the vibrant? Definitely cost cutting.
Also, some TPU cases are just 1-2 dollars on ebay. Otterboxes on the other hand are +25$ sadly.

Zagg invisible shield and otterbox commuter case. TPU cases from ebay is pretty good and cheeap also.
+1 on the realook sp and body glove flex chrome case. it might feel a little weighty but the lip on the faux chrome bit is well worth the size increase.
thanks! lots of suggestions here. it will help if you leave a little note about your suggestion since everyone has a different opinion (such as why you might want to avoid getting screen protectors)
Seidio Innocase or Otterbox commuter. Had the Otterbox on my Slide and it worked awesome. I got the Seidio for the Vibe because I also wanted the clip and so far all is good with it. I'm using the screen protector from T-Mobile cause I had it left from when my wife got hers, works fine for me.

I have it and really like it. I was going to suggest it, but it might be too bulky for pocket carry. The outside would probably be covered in dust and lint also. I don't own the Otterbox Commuter, but I think the Trident Cyclops provides more protection. It has dust covers for the speakers and silicone plugs for the usb and headphone jack. Only thing unprotected would be the microphone hole.
in what sense would the speakers and plugs be unprotected--just dust? cant you use that keyboard compressed air blower for those?
i was wondering because my silicone case makes it impossible to get the usb charging port open so i was considering it just leaving it open forever, but not if its vulnerable to dmg
I have the T-Mobile rubber one, I like it but I hate the lint/hair it collects. I also hate how it scratched the hell out of the bezel. But I think that woud happen with any other case.
I've been checking out the Trident one and thought it looked pretty good.
My girlfriend got a Seido case for her Droinc and it reminds me of the inCase cases for iPhones, I wish they'd make them for the Vibrant...

Nothing can be better than the Otterbox. Pricey though.
Which do you guys recommend?
If you have any intentions of keeping your phone in a pocket, then I would steer clear of the Defender. I got one right after I bought my Atrix, and I maybe had it on for a total of 30 minutes.
It makes it difficult at best to get in and out of pockets, and whatever rubber they use will attract lint from pants you don't even remember owning.
It's probably a great case if you have a man purse or have an affinity for genie pants, but I think for the average joe it's just a bit bulky.
Oh and the screen protector kinda gives a rainbow effect. Overall I was not impressed by the case that so many had raved about.

Thanks for the quick response. Have you tried the Commuter?
Defender is made for belt clip, commuter is made for pockets, impact is silicon case for purses, etc!
All you have to do is go to the Otterbox website to see this!

Screen protector rainbow effect is a very well known issue. There are solutions for this, one using baby powder, the other using the natural oil on your fingers. Both easily found with Google.

Thank you.
Unless your planning on running your phone over with a truck, The Otter Box Commuter is amazing. I currently have it on my Atrix "4G" and it works as advertised. I've dropped mine from a 25 foot cat walk and have it survive. Also i've thrown it against a wall multiple times to brag about how well it works.
Otter Box Commuter
I have the Defender and the Impact.
First and foremost let me say this, Don't waste a dime on the Impact! It is a HIGHLY OVERPRICED Gel Skin Case slapped with the Otterbox name on it.
I know the link was posted above showed all 3, but definitely steer clear from the Impact.
As for the Defender, it's will easily protect your phone if you don't mind wearing it on your belt. It it definitely not the case to purchase if you are gonna have it in your pocket. (way to much of a PITA to take in and out)
As for the Defender Case itself, it's a "Bomb Shelter" and basically turns your Atrix into a rugged Motorola Defy (minus the submerged water test)
Bottom line -
Defender - Best Case for Outside Belt Wear
Commuter - Good for the pockets
Impact - Overpriced Junk!
Hope that helps...
I have debated buying the Commuter. Suits me more as I play pocket pool with my Atrix! Still contemplating whether I will lose the silky smooth feeling I get when I put my hand in my pocket if I use one instead of the nude Atrix!
I had the Defender on my iPhone 3GS, but got tired of bumping it off getting in and out of the car. Glad it was on there, cos' it sure did protect the phone when it got knocked off my belt and smashed on the concrete.
Impact............what he said -------> ccrows
Thanks everyone! Went with the Commuter. I'll write up a quick review when it comes in tomorrow.
I have the Commuter. Works pretty well, has survived several drops without issue. It makes the phone much easier to securely hold as well.
I used the included screen protector for a week or so and couldn't stand the feel vs the naked glass. Took the protector off and I have no plans to replace it.

i have the defender (love it), but in my line of work I needed something that was rugged, so alot of it just depends on what it is that you do.
I use the commuter and carry mostly in a shirt pocket. It makes the phone a bit less slippery, which is good for a shirt pocket.
I do not use the screen protector. The only problem I have ever had is drops which dent corners. The commuter does that very well without a screen protector.

I was so anxious about dropping\scratching my phone that I bought this huge case from amazon and now I've realized....Using a case just ****ing ruins this phone, it literally becomes a working brick (literally) also its well known that its probably the thinnest phone around, i mean forget the case yo. I have had an Evo, and an Evo 3D previously. Both of which I never used a cover/case on.
Then I got a small clip on case for my GSIII, but really dislike the bulkiness that it adds to the phone. I keep toying around with it, taking the case off, then putting it back on. I really am thinking of going caseless. But I do need to find a good screen protector. If I decided to do that.
I'm still debating, every time I buy cases I end up taking it off with in a few days...I already got a screen protector and I think that's all I need.

This is my solution to the whole thing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645709 It focuses more on the screen protection than the case itself, so I'll sum it up here too.
I have found XO skin to be the best pick of wet install protection. Their skins cover any device so perfectly edge to edge that they virtually disappear. Other companies like ZAGG say they have "features" like the "orange peel effect", and that due to the fact that the Galaxy Nexus has a curved screen the shield needs to be smaller to accommodate this and there's nothing they can do. It's bull. They look like crap and it's their way of trying to hide that. XO has a full body protection option that when installed properly offers complete protection from every day nicks dings and short distance fumbles (all you can ask for from a case) that you almost forget is there. And when you do remember you show it off to people, instead of shoving your ZAGG covered phone back in your pocket in embarrassment. It still has a slight rubbery feel under hot heavy use (no innuendo intended), so I put a brand new new cheepo throw away plastic screen protector over it every couple of weeks to solve all my issues. (trust me when I say the XO Skin is completely unnoticeable underneath it. It does NOT look like you have two screen protectors on. Many people didn't believe me) I have been case free for 2 months without a care in the world about it, and my phone still looks wonderful.

I need a case. My hands are small so when I try to reach with my thumb across the screen, the base of my thumb will usually barely touch the screen causing chaos with the touchscreen. Case with raised sides that protect the screen some when dropped keep my thumb from hitting the touchscreen on the sides.
I picked up a otterbox commuter a few days ago it's was a pain to get the phone in and is a bit big but I am happy with the case and screen protector as accidents happen and it's better to protect the phone then pay $600 to replace it.

Thats the point. It replaces the battery cover and adds protection to the screen. Sure it prolly wouldn't be that great for the back but you would have an extra back cover.
