Rumor: Sprint and T-Mobile may team up to complete 4G network

On paper, Sprint and T-Mobile seem like complete opposites: Sprint has 4G, T-Mobile has "4G speeds" with HSPA+; Sprint is CDMA, T-Mobile is GSM; Sprint is yellow, T-Mobile is magenta. Ok, maybe that last one is a bit of a stretch, but you get the point. Despite the glaring differences, a rumor has surfaced today stating that the two carriers may soon be in cahoots to finish building out Sprint's 4G network. Three people "familiar with the situation" have spoken to the Wall Street Journal, saying that Sprint's board of directors is considering allowing T-Mobile to invest in Clearwire, the company that is aiding Sprint with their WiMAX network (Sprint also owns 54 percent of Clearwire). Clearwire currently needs billions of dollars to finished expanding its 4G network, the WSJ says, and it needs to figure out if it will continue to soldier on alone or get some financial aid from T-Mobile. This isn't the first time we've heard the possibility of Sprint and T-Mobile teaming up and, if Clearwire and Sprint need as much cash as the WSJ says they do, it may not be the last time.
Although Sprint and T-Mobile could use each other to help bring the fight to AT&T and Verizon, I would be kind of surprised to the number three and four carriers come together. T-Mobile seems pretty invested in their HSPA+ network upgrades and, if they were to invest in WiMAX, their hot new HSPA+ phones would become kind of obsolete. It would, however, allow them to immediately have a 4G network available to some of its customers, so maybe the idea isn't so far-fetched. What do you think, readers? Will we soon be hearing about SprinT-Mobile?

I'll believe it when I see it. Number three and number four? I agree with T being four in terms of network Sprint is #2 behind Verizon last I heard.

Last I read, Sprint is moving forward with LTE purchases. That opens talks again with T.
T will not move to wimax.

I heard that too... but HSPA+ is not LTE and neither are technically 4G. i dont really consider wimax to to be 4G either thou.

I dont want a merger lol less competition equals more money from my pockets. There is plenty of competition right now though among the monthly plan companies keeping things low I guess.
Also it sounds like T-Mobile would be paying Sprint to help build 4G and T-Mobile would get in reward to use 4G. So... now we gotta share with T-Mobile. Also I bet if we start sharing we get capped. I mean currently 4G is uncapped mostly because there arnt a huge network of people using all of its resources.

Not quite. The reason there aren't any worries with WiMax is because of the huge amounts of bandwidth Clearwire and Sprint have access to. The bandwidth combined with the shorter range of towers means that the network can handle a lot of people using the network at any given time. T-mobile is small enough, it shouldn't make a big enough difference. The bandwidth part won't change if they ever convert to LTE, so Clear and Sprint have the advantage right now due to having the only functioning 4G capable network and the ability to upgrade that network relatively effortlessly, and still have enough bandwidth to beat Verizon/everyone else.

I actually don't think this is a bad idea. If it would help expedite the expansion of the 4G network then onward and upward I say. For the amount of bandwidth that T-Mo would gain access to it would be a benefit to them. And maybe Sprint could get some pointers from T-Mo on customer service. Sprint has come a long way in that respect since we signed up, but I hear a lot of T customers swear by the service they get. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

February Announcement from Sprint

What's your gut feel?
All of the poll options seem extremely relevant.
SVDO - Technically the HTC Thunderbird (Verizon EVO) is going to support this, at least that's what leaked documents propose. It'd make sense for Sprint to launch something similar.
Nationwide 4G coverage - It's really starting to pick up, they just lit up 4g in my area and i've heard a lot of reports of new 4g locations going in all over the country
CMDA iPhone - You have to admit that the technology is there, all it would take is an agreement with Apple and Sprint could support the iPhone just as well as Verizon. I find this one to be the least likely, although possible
Dual core phones - I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed that ATT / Verizon stole the show and Sprint had no new phone announcements at CES... It seems likely that they'd try and sign on with a handset manufacturer to get some competition going for ATT / Verizon and their Tegra handsets.

Dual core phones, or tablets.
Other than that, plan changes.

I hope voice and data. But I don't expect it. Maybe they will formally announce that they are going to slightly screw existing customers with their new gold and silver premier customer requirements.

The slogan of "making the impossible possible" made me think SVDO is going to be the announcement. It had better be big with a phrase like that

Of course none of the above. This big annoucement will be about Froyo and a Sprint iPhone.

My gut feel is the overlay of Wimax with LTE. Maybe announcing an LTE device as well. The trials have been underway since last year, so I would imagine it would be about time.

A Sprint iPhone that runs GingerBread and an iPad that runs Honeycomb.

A little bird told me that the rumor within Sprint is an HTC dual-core 3D phone. That wouldn't "make the impossible possible," but it would explain the presence of an illusionist.
This little bird, however, is only one step up from a Sprint retail rep. So, I'm not putting too much stock in it.

They just threw up 4g towers this week in Lansing and Flint, MI.... if they're canning 4g they probably would have stopped rolling it out by now. As far as I can tell (hit up the EVO forums for a better judge) there's a lot of new 4g sites rolling out.

Maybe they going give us actually 3g speed. You know the fast speed that t mobile has which ironically is the same speed as our 4g.

where did you hear about the Lansing towers? I just tried and wasn't able to connect.

I vote nationwide 4g and a few new phones. I just checked clear's site and it is now showing tuisa as well as every other major city in oklahoma as having some coverage (not 100% covered). Previously no 4g coverage was available anywhere in the state. I think that sprint will reveal a slew of new cities for the new 4g rollout.
That being said I'm still mad because the 4g coverage in tulsa is only in north tulsa and I live in south tulsa. :sigh

Its going to be the blackberry tablet and some boring phones with maybe 1 good phone being announced.

I'd love to see some major 4g roll out, I'm still aggrivated by the fact that I live in San Diego(one of the largest cities in the united states and part of one of the largest economies in the world, yes thats right CA's economy is an incredibly large portion of the US's economy) and we don't even have 4g.

Thanks. I keep hoping I will see something (we need any kind of tower really, but 4g would be nice). There is 4g 100 miles north and 65 miles south of me (and for like 80-90 miles of coast too), so I keep hoping they will connect the dots.
Having used 4G in DC, I certainly hope they don't can it either as it worked great (better than my home connection usually). If Clearwire continues the way they were last time I paid attention, it doesn't look good though

I used to check that all the time then I stopped. There is coverage shown 10 friggin minutes south of me now (not "Best Clear", but 4G nonetheless).
Interesting that they skipped Stuart. I understand skipping Hobe Sound and even Jupiter (just below it, very near to where it's full coverage), but Stuart is a major cash town, almost as much so as where I am, but with 4X the population to boot.
Ack. They best keep moving north.

I think they are testing the connection in rural areas where traffic is low then moving up into more densely populated areas later. This is how they rolled out in many cities that now have coverage. One of the posters talked about how in memphis only "the hood" is covered, the same could be said for tulsa and probably many other cities.
They will cover us eventually. If you look at Dallas, tx you will notice that all of the suburbs around it are covered, the same is likely to happen for Memphis, Tulsa, Port St. Lucie and others.

Celebration in the Florida Panhandle

Well guys, I don't know how many of you (if any of you) live in the Florida Panhandle, but if you do, you would know that for years our area has been very much behind the rest of the nation in terms of upgrading to newer and faster wireless cellular networking standards. Well, we Panhandlers can now rejoice!! Our years of painful waiting have not been in vain.
On the GSM side...
T-Mobile
After years of dealing with the painfully slow Edge network, T-Mobile users in Pensacola got both 3g AND 4g coverage in limited areas this past week. I was not in town when it got switched on apparently (was in Louisiana where they already have 4g), but was pleasently surprised to see the HSPA+ indicator come on when I got back. It hasn't been turned on everywhere in town yet though, or at least not according to my phone. North, Northeast, and Central P-Cola are the areas I've tested thus far, all of which are served by one tower in the North Central section. Downtown area and Southeast side (East Hill/Heights) still running on Edge. No official announcement from T-Mobile about it though (which is weird, hope they're not just doing a large-scale beta test). Apparently 4g has been switched on a 100 miles east in Panama City as well, per the T-Mobile website. Also per the T-Mobile coverage locator, 2 new cell towers have just been added to the local Pensacola network (one in the northeastern suburb of Pace, and one on the southwestern beach town of Perdido Key), though I haven't been able to test if these are in fact 4g/3g towers yet.
AT&T
AT&T is still in the baby stages of rolling out their 4g system, with little information about when and if they are going to upgrade their infrastructure here in the Panhandle. But they have had 3g here in Pensacola for a while now, and it is decently quick. Much better than Edge, at any rate. I REALLY hope the T-Mobile buyout doesn't go through...I can't stand AT&T. But if it does, then AT&T will absorb all of T-Mobile's infrastructure, and therefore inherit whatever 4g systems T-Mobile has in place here in the Panhandle. This may, in fact be the reason why there is no news/rumors/anything about AT&T releasing their own 4g in the Panhandle - because they aren't planning to. Hmm...
On the CDMA side of things...
Sprint
Many unconfirmed reports have gone around that Sprint is testing their 4g network in and around small parts of Pensacola as well. I confirmed this (at least for myself) by testing out a friend's Evo 4g near the Cordova Mall area where there had been 4g spottings. Not very fast or strong, but we did pick up 4g. However, no one knows for sure when they will finish testing it and fully switch it on. But it's encouraging to see they're definitely working on rolling it out.
Verizon
Verizon just officially launched their 4g LTE in Pensacola and 50 miles to the west in Mobile, AL. Unlike T-Mobile, Verizon has made this event quite a public affair, with even the local news reporting on it: LINK. As Verizon is proudly displays their true data coverage map that breaks down the types of data networks by the different "g's" (unlike some other type of company i know *cough*AT&T*cough*), it is easy to see that their 4g coverage envelops all of Pensacola proper, with most of the surrounding suburbs/small towns getting 4g as well. There are a few 3g gaps here and there, but the overwhelming majority of all the urbanized areas now gets 4g service. It is by far the most expansive 4g network in the Pensacola area, and also covers most of Lower Alabama as well (Mobile, Daphne, Gulf Shores, Foley, Dauphin Island, Theodore, etc.). Panama City and most of the other Panhandle areas are not currently covered by Verizon 4g (save Tallahassle). However, according to THIS article, all other Panhandle areas will be covered by sometime in 2013. Not bad Verizon, not bad at all.
So, all in all, we now have 3 different cellular providers that offer (at least limited) 4g in Pensacola and other parts of the FL panhandle. All 4 providers now have at least 3g coverage in most urbanized areas. And at least two providers have documented plans to keep expanding their current 4g system deeper into the Panhandle.

Sprint's New Direction and What It Means to Consumers

Hello everyone,
Today was a very big day if you are on or thinking about making the move over to Sprint. Today, they announced their plans for their future LTE network and how they plan to move forward over the next few years.
The first thing to discuss is Wimax. Wimax is a good technology, but the problem is that both Clearwire and Sprint deployed it very poorly. First of all, it was deployed on a very high spectrum, making it difficult to penetrate through buildings and travel long distances, while not degrading in signal strength. The other thing about the current Wimax deployment is that (and I have noticed this personally) switching from tower to tower over Wimax is very poorly done. What I mean by this is that switching from tower to tower doesn't work like it would if I were to use 3G.
Wimax was, however, a great investment. Wimax gave Sprint a great partnership with Clearwire, and it also gave Sprint the the title of the first 4G network(not that the title really matters anymore). I feel that Sprint knew they were going to at some point make the switch to LTE, which is why they used Wimax instead of LTE. It turns out that it is pretty easy to convert a Wimax tower to an LTE tower, its just a few hardware and software changed and you are ready to go.
Now its time to get down to the exciting stuff, the conversion over to LTE. Sprint plans to deploy its LTE network by the middle of 2012 using its current Wimax network (which will be converted over to LTE), Lightsquared's new LTE network (assuming it goes through the FCC), and most importantly, Nextel's IDEN network. I say that IDEN is the most important because of two things; the first being that the network is already of decent size, so there would be a good signal in much of the country, the second being that the IDEN network runs a lower part of the wireless spectrum, allowing the signal to reach farther distances and penetrate buildings. All three of these solutions will expand Sprint's network effectively and quickly, and give many people in America 4G.
As far as devices go, Sprint will be releasing 15 LTE equipped devices in 2012 (the first phones will be strictly 1900Mhz which will be Sprint's 4G), and will continue to sell Wimax devices throughout 2012. This is a smart move, as I believe that completely dropping Wimax support would cause a sort of uprising among Sprint customers. If Sprint turns off its Wimax network at the end of 2012, they should allow any customers that still have a Wimax phone to upgrade to a new LTE phone, thereby honoring their promise of unlimited 4G.
The price of this new network is not cheap. Currently, Sprint believes it will spend around $10 billion to create this new LTE network. They also believe that they will be saving about $17 billion within the next 5-6 years because they will be fading out their IDEN network (which currently costs $4 billion a year to run). Note that this number is much higher than wall street analysts had expected, but Sprint is going to do what it has to do.
So what is the end result? I believe that if all goes smoothly, the LTE rollout will go quickly and Sprint will have a thriving LTE network by the middle of 2013, and at that point it will cover most major cities in America as well as the more populated suburbs. However, if this transition does not go well, I feel that this could be the end of Sprint. Sprint is spending a lot of money these days ($10 billion on a new network over 3 years, $30 billion on Iphones over the next 4 years) and I am sure investors are a bit wary of the overall situation.
I have very high hopes for Sprint, and I hope that they rollout their new network successfully and quickly, so that everyone can experience the true speed and power of 4G LTE on the (in my opinion, maybe not yours) best wireless network in the nation.

All this talk about lte, wimax, clearwire, etc. has brought me to realize I know very little about the subject. I thought 4G was 4G. Apparently there are differences. None of the carriers offer 4G where I live, the closest being verizon about 60 miles away. I guess I'm off to the world of google and wiki to do some researching.

actually, none of the carriers anywhere in the country offer 4G, they offer somewhat advanced 3G that they've labeled as 4G. But that's a debate for a different place.
Chances are, if you don't have "4G" now, you sure as heck won't miss it if you get a phone that has "4G" capabilities and you're in an area that isn't covered by that service. I rarely use the "4G" on my Shift, because it's 150 miles to the closest site that has it. I think that's the case for a whole lot of people with the Shift, and other "4G" phones, especially on Sprint.
The LTE service Sprint is coming out with is supposed to be put in the same locations as their 3G within a year of the beginning of the rollout, so all 3G covered areas would also have LTE in theory (or so the rumors have said). That would actually make a difference in the phones people purchase, and make that extra $10/month for the "smartphone fee" worthwhile.
It's probably worth waiting on your upgrade until next fall to get the LTE phones if you're into the more advanced phones, but Wimax will still be supported (but not likely expanded), and of course they'll still have the 3G capabilities. Personally, I haven't decided whether I'll keep my Shift past my Feb upgrade or not, it'll depend on the condition of my Shift, the device rumors I'm hearing, and of course how much money I have to upgrade. It's my last yearly upgrade, so I have to actually buy a phone that I expect to last for two years.

From my understanding they're re-purposing their 1900mhz band they use for 3G/Voice for LTE. Once the re-purposing is complete our phones would lose 3G/Voice functions outside of roaming on Verizon as they're relocating their 3G/Voice services to 800mhz (Verizon uses 850mhz so our 850mhz radio won't work on Sprint's 800mhz band). Hopefully they'll keep 3G/Voice on 1900mhz so they can gradually phase out their 1900mhz phones on both Sprint and Virgin Mobile. I'm not due for an upgrade until March 2013.

You probably won't notice a huge difference except for the amount of coverage. Comparing my WiMAX speeds to those of my friends on Verizon's LTE we're about the same speed (around 10Mbps).

I didn't know people actually use 4G. I have in here in San Antonio but never use it cause I'm always on WiFi and if I don't have that I'm probably not on my phone downloading stuff

I use 4G whenever 3G is crapping out because it really kills my battery. I think im going to start carrying a 2nd battery.

I have 4G where I am, great at the house. Can definately tell when I switch back to 3G. Use 4G all the time and love it.

I have 4g most of the time but my wifi is much faster. For a while I was using the 4g until I could figure out who my internet provider would be at our new place. 4g is still pretty bad as I live in downtown los angeles with cell coverage that dies as soon as you walk into any building more than 100 feet.

I just hope sprints lte has better building penetration. That's the only reason i don't use wimax much now. It drops connection so easy inside buildings if you are away from windows and takes a long time to pick it up again and while it's trying to connect or if it's dropping you get no data.

How's your 3G reception? They're re-purposing their 3G/Voice 1900mhz band for LTE so if you have crappy 3G reception most likely you'll have crappy LTE reception when it finally rolls out.
