before going on the nexus one, I had a hero htc and strut really faster than the nexus of the home, the lag does not the hero and the nexus with snapdragon yes
After rooting and installing a custom rom (tried both cyan & modaco desire), the lag disappeared. I believe a large portion is due to the extra memory freed up running these roms.
When google releases their next OTA with himem, and some other tweaks, it should (hopefully) be fixed for non-rooted users.
I have heard some folks using 2.1 on their Droid that it's a tad bit laggy as well.

I'm using cyan's rom and it's somewhat smoother than stock, yet not as smooth as my mother's Magic.
Surprising to say the least.

Yeah, the magic is running 320x480 (vs 480x800), im assuming still on android 1.6. The processor speed difference should be able to make up for it, but it seems Android 2.1 is the main reason for the lag at the moment...perhaps a background process?
Also, do you have animated wallpaper enabled?
I'm currently on MoDaCo Desire a19, using SetCPU @ 998mhz, and using the Social Live Wallpaper, and the screen movement is smooth as silk. Prior, I was using a21, and had the same homescreen lag I had on the stock rom.
Using home++ is smooth
yes it is the resolution(480x800) that is poorly managed but why ?

Home++ beta 0.8.0.7.15 from their website allows live wallpaper.
Try switching to a different live wallpaper and see if you see any performance increase. Are you using the stock N1 live wps or one that is made by someone else?
no im using cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and sometimes desire rom alpha 21
I was always aware of it being not so smooth but when I finally compared it to an older HTC Magic I was disappointed... it's definitely smoother on the magic. I'm running CM btw, and I didn't notice any improvement in smoothness after flashing.
Yeah, that's very odd. After I flashed it, there's a night and day difference.
Have you tried removing all your widgets & shortcuts to see if it reduces the lag at all? Then add them one at a time to see if something's screwing with it?
Dunno why it would have that big of an impact, but to be honest, sometimes the dumb things fix more than one would think, hahaha.

Nope, only one of the stock wallpapers (the one with the red rock).
I have noticed that if you add shortcuts to several contacts, performance plummets. Could you check and see if the same happens to you?
With the stock ROM I get a lot of lag too. Home++ really helps, but i want live wallpaper and 3D launcher.

I added 20 contacts, and while there was a minor slowdown initially swiping to that page, it's not running that much slower overall.
I'm using TaskPanel, and kill everything but the HTC sense, mail, messaging, live wallpaper processes on phone start up. Then I don't touch the thing, and have nothing on it's autokill list (I let android deal with it). I found that if I don't do this, the FM Radio app along with a couple others autorun, and android never kills them, even if they are never used.
At this moment, after having the phone on for 22 hours, I have 179MB of free memory.
(Using the following on my home screen: Social Live Wallpaper, HTC Big clock w/ animated weather, TaskPanel 4x1 widget, last.fm widget, htc calendar, htc photo album, power control, htc friendstream, htc news, and the rest of the empty space is filled with program shortcuts.)
I don't think it have anything to do with the resolution. I think it have everything to do with the new launcher. Remember, when Droid came out it had the pull up launcher and 2.1 immediately came out it had a different launcher. I have a feeling it was rushed and not optimized. I could be wrong but i have a funny feeling the next release will probably be better.
For now I'm using Enom rom with the Manup hero like theme and goodies. I limited the launcher screens to 3 screens to improve it a little better to me (albeit 3 screens is more than all i need so I'm cool with it).

English is not my first language, I run into some unintentional puns every now ant then...
So i got one phone with stock ruu on it and been looking at ways to customize it. I tried a couple different launchers and somehow managed to overlook this one. It's called zeam it's pretty bad ass it's light weight and fast with both the left and right buttons both customizable. It has the ability to have up to nine screens and still move fast. of course my favorite function landscape mode that actually turns in less than a thirty minute wait like some other launchers. I know I sound like an ad but I'm in no way affiliated with these guys. It's downloadable from the market and here's the xda page

Bro I know the feeling. I was working with this dev on rooting the phones and he was having me try stuff that I had posted eventually I was like dude you should really check out some of my posts
great damn launcher !!
but i wish i could have my clock weather set up like in normal Sense UI
the beautiful widgets 2.36 has line thou it in 2.1 :/ and looks like crap
So i've been watching videos of both stock android (Nexus one, G2) and videos of the Desire HD rom with Sense on other devices. Something that's become quite apparent in the sense rom is that HTC decided to strip a lot of the nice animations that make stock android pleasing to the eye.
Examples include, when you open and app you get a zoom in effect, and when u close it u get a zoom out. Also when the keyboard pops up it sort of slides from the bottom. Another is when you open the app tray, the icons fly in.
But on sense there's no animations. Everything just appears instantly. That really is sort of putting me off Sense, and that's a big disappointment considering i like the look of HTC's widgets.
Has anybody else noticed this? What do you think of it?
Agree to disagree...
...
Must say, you are right, but aren't the guys from Cyanogen Mod going to do something about that?!
CyanogenModders only work with stock Android, so whatever magic dust they decide to sprinkle on the DHD, it will not have Sense in the mix
Next week is looming large... Im gonna take a day off work to show my new baby some love when it arrives)))
I had a nexus and the zoom's are really nothing to write home about

Im sorry to say but you are wrong. If you go to the display settings and under animations set it to 'All' you will get keyboard sliding animations, screen transition animations, the only thing you dont get is a 3D effect with the app draw, but it does slid nicely into view from the bottom and is just more professional. However as mentioned previously its android, customise! Add all the animations you want!!

The Desire HD Sense has a fade in/out effect by default for both Sense tabs and applications unlike older Sense versions ... its actually very pleasing and runs smoothly on HD2 so definitely will be awesome on the actual HD
Animations are nice eyecandy, but everytime they play you have to wait till they are finished. After some time they'll only anoy me. I am happy with as few animations as possible, so I turned them off. Just my humble opinion.

every time I put my Xoom in portrait mode, the homescreens lag, likely around 15 - 20 fps. landscape mode is perfect, probably like 60fps. I'm just wondering if anyone knew a fix for this, or just an explanation lol

same here. Not terrible but noticeably slower. Wondering if its because it has to render the widgets in portrait and theyre optimized for landscape? I really don't know.

could be. I haven't tried removing the Widgets and seeing if it increases the speed. might give that a try. But rendering Widgets in portrait shouldn't be any slower than landscape... "shouldn't" lol

I have mine setup like this, transparent background, I beleive the icons are the same size as the homescreen ones. I could set it up to have multiple pages, but I like having everything on one screen lol.
I also have the text set to white instead of black, I can see it just fine, camera doesn't really pick it up though.

That seems logical, however, it's just as choppy and laggy when you have the Xoom upside down (camera down, HDMI up). I only observe smooth transitions when in the standard, landscape position (and even this isn't always lag-free).

that's how launcher pro looks. I just don't like the small app icons. Plus I'm ADD so looking for an app in that is like looking for buried treasure haha
dxTop
I use dxTop Pro on my Xoom, pretty nice interaction. But I didn't set it as default. So each time I hit the home button I get a pop up to select either dxtop or launcher (the xoom default home). I find dxTop as a good alternative. That's why I don't use it as default, just when I wanna play around with a new home. Plus it offer the same exact 3D effects as the default home on the xoom. But with dxTop you have a "cube like" interface. So you can swipe up, swipe down, swipe left and right, and there is a swip for the center. So in all u have about 5 different swipe positon. Not just the current left to right position on the xoom default. You can google it for a demo and more info. Just thought i'll add my 2ยข.
Which is the better rom? Miksifted g or supreme sense? I havent tried supreme but i love mikshifted g, I was just wondering what everyone else thought.
Supreme Sense is the best sense rom IMO. A lot of bloat removed, fast and it's got all the prettyness of Sense 3.0. Only problem I had with it was no landscape on the homescreen. Other than that it's the best sense rom I've used.
Also I don't believe you will be able to flash sense kernels from ROM manager as they are written for older versions of Sense/Android.

EDIT:i lied. don't believe me!!!!
Well it's not really which is better. Supreme Sense is based on MikShifted G. So think of it as MikShifted G goodness , with alot of eye candy and performance to match
MikShifted on XDA Premium APP
TEAM MiK
Mik ROMs Since 3/13/11
Mikshifted-G: A Highly optimized ROM based off the 2.3 EVO Shift OTA. It is a very well rounded mix of Sense 2.1 and 3.0. You get all the important functions of sense 3.0 (Weather, task manager, lockscreen a few others) and alot of added standalone features like a very well implemented (if not the best) Rosie personalize button remap, and being able to toggle through all of the different types of system volumes. Mikshift-G is very stable, and speed is wonderful I get great speeds just as fast as AOSP. and battery life is also about the same as AOSP (alright maybe just a tad bit shorter)
Mikshifted-G is probably your best choice of the two if your not looking for complete eye candy and want a majorly stable and great performing ROM, with good amounts of updates (had to throw that in for anyone who reads the SS threads )
Supreme Sense: Supreme Sense is a project that is based off Mikshifted-G. The developer basically added a Sense 3.0 3D rosie for that extra eye candy (which is amazing)
This is based off of Mikshifted-G so it is still very smooth and gives just as good battery life.
Although even though the developer has done an amazing job at optimizing the Rosie to run smoothly on our devices the rosie and its 3D widgets are still memory heavy. Therefore it is not quite as fast as Mikshifted-G is. Now im not saying it isnt smooth , but there are a few hiccups and skips here and there. Most of the features are they're from mikshifted-G (except the Rosie Remap I talked about) and Supreme Sense is an excellent, stable, ROM.
If you are not TOO concerned about having the absolute fastest sense ROM and want extra animations to show off (or please yourself) then Supreme Sense is probably where you want to go.
Now these are my opinions , but it is probably better to try each one out for yourself and see what you prefer.
I personally am Supreme Sense all the way but to each his own

Well, I'm gonna put in my two sense (no pun intended). I have tried both since I was able to get my shift rooted, and I like them both. They are both really good, stable roms. I haven't had any problems with either. They are both fast. I really do not see any hiccups with either one. Maybe a slight, and I use slight very carefully because it is barely noticeable, in the Supreme. But supreme is sweet!!! It has some fantastic widgets, like the photo grid, and the carousel is really cool. If you do not know what that is, with a hard swipe on the home page, all of your screens go in a circle like a carousel, and if you want to go from the last screen on one side all the way to other side, you do not have to scroll all the way to the other side. It's one continuous circle. The options on the lock screen are super cool too, like the photo sensations. I highly recommend giving supreme a shot. Definitely worth taking a look. I guarantee that!!!
The ONLY thing that bugs me about supreme (and its not annoying enough to were i wont use it) is that almost everytime you scroll through your homescreens once you get back to your first screen (the home one...usually has a clock...) it freaks out and jumps backwards to the previous one then back to the first one.. kindof annoying
