Anyone have a clue as to when 3G Xooms will get their update?
Late summer is what I got. And it may have to be done with the lte upgrade. Which sucks.

It will come as soon as Verizon f's it up enough.
The real answer is that nobody knows outside Google/Verizon/Motorola, and they're not going to announce until right before rollout.

Is there any actual evidence of this? From what I gathered, a couple of people just made blind assumptions about this and it started rolling from there. I have never heard of an update having to be done physically by a carrier or oem, and it just seems like a bad idea. I can guarantee that not everyone will be sending in their Xoom for the 4g upgrade as well. This just doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not aiming this at you, or calling you out personally, but this just seems highly unlikely to me and I won't be too happy if it is true, and wanted to know if there was any reason to give this rumor any merit, or if it can be brushed off.

The sd card works good under root. I have no real use for 4g on my tablet. I really hate sending this thing off. Plus I use wifi as my primary data source. Data is backup if I need it.

It especially doesn't make any sense considering that many Xooms (like my own) are encrypted, and the tech couldn't even boot fully to test the update.
If your encrypted how are they going to test that the 4g module is working in your xoom?

In the verizon xoom upgrade "getting ready guide", they tell you you can optionally encrypt your Xoom before sending it in. I imagine they will be able to boot into the os, just like a fresh ROM. So I'm sure they will be able to test 4g, as well as the software update. But I still highly doubt this is how the update will be done. Guess I've seen both carriers & oem's do dumber things, I just hope it's not the case! I expect an ota just like every other update.

You expect them to test? Most likely this will be an assembly line function. Any required updates will occur either on next boot with connection, or be installed via some kind of assembly line flash similar to first assembly, needing to be completed by user on first boot. It makes more sense for the update to be in 2 parts, with os update plus introduction of software, then the hardware change out.
Having a tech man handle each device for software, is too expensive and risky. I personally expect to see email saying backup your data, because a wipe will be required

I'd imagine they don't need to. The module has been QA tested, and it's a simple matter of plugging it into a mini-PCI slot.
Well if the design is as I'm thinking the 2 are seperate. I rooted and found I have not lost my Google movies and have just gain SD support. Funny how the stock root works fine, but yet others have lost wifi, market stuff, etc. I am going to request the module be shipped to me. I can't afford to be down 7 days for that. I will be more than happy to sign a waiver to release moto if I screw up. In fact they are going to get more support from me anyway. My wife loves the fact that my xoom is performing so well. Now I have to by her one! And she hates moto. This has been the best work/play device for me yet!

Wrong, I have webtop mod. I still got the update notification two days ago (I volunteered for beta test). I didn't actually update so I don't know if the update will go through or fail after the webtop mod.
supposedly there is issues with the update and rooted users? can anyone confirm or deny this?

Sorry I wasn't clear when I said it stop the update I didn't mean it would stop it from downloading it stops it from installing. Webtop mod causes update to fail during install. A couple of posts up umm (sorry I don't know your name you've commented on my posts before) the poster with the new York name said that being deodexed would also cause the update to fail. I can't confirm or deny this but that might be true as its a major change just like the webtop mod is.

Wrong. This doesn't cause any major problems, you simply lose root. There is currently no method of rooting if you update, save flashing back to 1.2.6 or 1.5.2.
I assume this is consistant with all Atrix owners. I've just GladRoot my Bell Atrix, but only so I can use setcpu. I have not modded anything else.
So, hopefully (one day) Bell might update their version of the Atrix, although its not looking good right now

Just a curiosity considering you're from Aussie Land...why did you get the Bell Atrix vs. the AT&T one? Since modding or romming wise, the Bell doesn't have much going on for it due to no SBF

There were 2 reasons
1) I was in Canada at the time skiing around the day of release (17th March), needed a phone that worked on the right bands (my T-Mobile Nexus S didn't work at all) and happened to go past a Bell store while I was grocery shopping that had them in stock for $599. So I got it and had it unlocked in store.
2) Wanted one without the AT&T branding
All in all, I probably should have gone the AT&T version. I didnt know that Bell was so crap releasing updates. Modding wise, I wasn't fussed there was no SBF. I actually don't mind the phone because it has less bloatware on it from what I have seen.
I'm happy to just have root, and it plays the games that I use with absolute smooth operation. Overall, apart from the lack of updates, I'm stoked with it.

Well you did end up getting a nice phone. But just an FYI for the next time you're in Canada that the Nexus S(Tmo) will work on 2 carriers, Wind and Mobilicity, as both use the HSPA 1700 frequency. Only negative is that they are currently only have towers in major metro cities.
I hope Gingerbread is actually released one day with source and that it will be possible to make the alterations such as removing CIQ that were done with Froyo.
Time will tell.
Its coming, samsung/sprint will not just drop all the $$ they did, and then not put out a relase

We will get it. The new Conquer has it and it is basically an Epic. I think they want to resolve the reboot issue that has plagued new Gingerbread releases from the start. Then they can wash their hands of the Epic and not worry about any more maintenance releases.

I could be totally wrong, but my personal opinion is if the Epic had been on say Verizon this update would have been long since finished.

I want an Epic2 so bad right now, I think the last rdf pushed me over the line I'm affraid to say...
I wish the epic2 had a keyboard. I'm probably going to hold off on getting any new phones until the next good android with a slide out keyboard. in the meantime I really wish they would put out source to our Dev's who seem to have a much better handle on debugging and let us get our cyanogen on. Hell with a good cyanogen 7 rom I probably wouldnt get a new phone for another 2-3 years.
Agreed, I mean I have to face the facts, Ill have this phone for at least 1 more year, and I'm sure longer, since Ill probably wait till the next "thing" comes out after I'm eligable for an upgrade.

I agree here. The International version has reportedly received timely updates. I don't know if they were referring to 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 or an incremental bug fix upgrade but supposedly they don't have this issue. I can't resist anymore. I went to the Sprint store and the Manager is going to hold one for me until I get there on launch day. Maybe having 2 active phones is excessive but I can't wait until my upgrade comes. Also, I am not ready to get rid of my Epic. I still love this phone.

Verizon??? The company with the last Galaxy S phone to get updated? The single carrier not to have any SIGN of the gingerbread update ever coming out for their Galaxy S phone? The carrier that believes that the Droid Charge is a suitable replacement for THE GS2? Sprint is probably the best carrier to bet on for upgrades to non "Droid" phones...

That's right. I would venture 90+% of people have NO CLUE what Gingerbread is, nor what version of Android they're currently running. They see an update come through, install it, and go about their business. A select few of them may notice something different with the looks, but that's about it. They may notice something looks different, but only because one of their apps (I'm thinking Eclair vs. Froyo messaging) looks a bit different. If that's the case, they probably assume the update was just for that app...
If Samsung is throwing around Gingerbread all over the Epic (as well as most of the US galaxy s series) have not gotten, maybe it is the carriers holding everything up. All of the updated GBs have been through Kies and for some reasn Sprint don't want the Epic on Kies.

Also, it saves you money to keep it and nobody has canceled anything yet. We have an official statement saying Q3 for the Atrix's ICS update. We then have lots of speculation based on many things regarding it. So let's at least try to stick with Motorola here until they've actually not delivered on their promise.
I'm hoping there will be a new Nexus phone around the end of this year when I am finally able to upgrade. Otherwise, SGS3.

Exactly right. I've never understood this "ZOMG, no updates, must change phone now!!1!11!! eleventy !!1!11!!" logic from supposedly intelligent people. If your phone is very old, sure, I can see upgrading, but a phone that's not even two years old and has what's currently the most prolific version of Android available (Gingerbread)? A phone that, in many ways, still kicks the crap out of most (not all, but most) phones currently in the market? All because it doesn't have a version of Android that, based on what I've seen, has more than a few significant issues on many devices, issues that have been largely resolved with Jellybean (shades of every-other-Windows-release-is-crap syndrome!)? Unbelievable.
I have a better question: what will there be left to talk/worry about once Moto hits us with ICS? JB?

Why waste money when I am not due for an upgrade?
There are people still running Froyo on their phone. Lol..
I was informed by my provider I'm stuck with Atrix next 28 months.
Me to have a nice day...

However, the grand x had been released, maybe we can get something from it?

I hate to be the one to say this, but you know when you go back to the root Atrix 4G section, there's a button on the right hand side that says "Search this forum", and if you select "Show posts" and type in "ZTE" and then press "Enter", you'll get around 4 pages of discussion on this topic?
As for which phone to get, a Nexus, I guess. At least if they make one with an SLCD and external storage/32GB internal... I don't really like the lower life-expectancy of AMOLED screens, and I need at least 25GB of data storage space.
