I have a G1. My wife has a T-Mo BB Pearl.
We want to buy the nexus one outright and put her sim in it.
Can I call and have them move her line to my plan and switch me to the even more plus (unlimited).
Seems like a way to avoid the individual plan only TMo is doing. I mean, they would never even know she had the N1 right?
You can just put the sim in and it should work out of the box with whatever plan she had (or is being switched to). They generally don't care what plan she's on, but the data plan may be device specific. I don't think there's a different rate for the android internet vs BB internet.
that should work but im not 100%...
well, the tricky part is that she used to do PR for T-Mo and for the past 3 years we have had a completely free, unlimited BB. Seriously, it has unlimited data/voice/anything.
I was concerned that she may lose this when putting her sim in the Nexus, but like you guys said... seems like T Mo nor the sim card would know the wiser.
Really just want to get her into android and have a nexus in my house.

I work for T-mobile so I can clarify this pretty easily.
You mentioned corperate discount for the BB plan, unfortunately if you get an N1 you'll lose that. The problem lies in that the BB data and Android data are defined as two different types of data on tmobile, and while it may work for a little while you'd still have some problems. (my boss has to do this on occasion when switching between his g1/cliq/mytouch and his unlocked bb storm)
You'd have no problem changing the plan over, but if you wanted to keep it free, you may have some issues. (You might be able to convince them to give you the android plan free, since it was a gifted bb thing?)
Since it's on the even more plus, just go in on the last day of your close date (bill is due one day, close date is generally a couple days later, check with #225# and 'due by' is the date you need to go in, before you pay your bill) Have them change the plan then and you'll only have to pay next month's bill including the new data plan, and your services would take effect the next day with all the new stuff.
if you have additional q's feel free to pop me an email at jareduarunorudu[at]gmail.com (I may not see the thread)
Hmm, did not realize there was a difference in BB data and android data.
That could severely limit what I am trying to do as I do not want to do anything to lose her "free" phone and its service.
So, you are saying the Nexus could not get data from the sim card, because her sim card has BB data plan on it, right?

It's a weird plan thing =\ BB's always been separate though, even before all the new smartphones came out because of their enterprise push email service.. it was always listed differently on accounts lol. Now it's listed as total internet for normal smartphones, BB data and then android data's separate =P
The first thing I'd say try would be to simply take her sim out, put it in your g1, and see how far you get. if it works, it should work the same way with the N1... Worst case scenario is you get the n1, it works for 3-4 weeks then quits working, you call customer care and yell at them until they give you free android data heh.
Gotta love GSM.

you make this sound like this isnt your first run in with having to give someone free android data?
ive still got my 5.99 internet (works with N1) i have little faith in it lasting in the long run but are you saying that if i raise my voice enough they will upgrade me for no cost? lol
I threw her sim card in my g1 and it worked perfectly.
Ordered the nexus last night.
Thanks for all of the help.

Good to hear it worked!
Haha no, it's not my first time. Depending on how you yell, I've seen people given free $300 phones just to stay, but it depends on how you do it, who you get, if they're foreign and a few other things lol.
Due to a messup by a rep I had one customer keep coming back and doing the same thing 3 months in a row for free unlimited texting on their family account on flexpay haha.
since it did work I'd say that if it stops working say it's been working fine for ages and the plan is grandfathered, make it free because it was working perfectly fine before and it's not your fault that the system defines it as two different things when it's still just data
Good luck! hope all goes well
Sorry for the late reply, I had never seen the notification thing on XDA before lol. (still relatively new to posting a bunch)
I just bought a used Atrix from a friend and don't want or need data. Plenty of wifi around me.
I have done some research on how to get around AT&T's auto data upgrade and it seems like everybody who gets a new iPhone who doesn't want or need data does the sim card swap. This is where they get a new sim card, put it in their old phone, call att and data block it, then put the new sim into their new iPhone. My question is, is this the only way to get around the auto upgrade? And will this work with any smart phone, not just the iPhone?
Sorry if this is an old topic, but I searched and couldn't find a suitable answer so I figured I'd come to the pro's.
Atrix 4G Q&A
For all of your questions relating to the AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G
Just call them and be like you cannot afford it. If the rep refuses ask for the manager, if he refuses ask them for the corporate number and call them. I did that few times to get early upgrades and always worked.

The SIM card trick stopped working a while back, its impossible to not get a data plan with a smartphone now on AT&T unless you find a way to spoof your IMEI, which you're not going to find anything on because its illegal in some countries. Sorry.
They really shouldnt be able to force people to get data plans if they dont want them (for non-subsidized phones), but for now there's not much that can be done about it.
I don't think there is a way to avoid this since the minute you turn your phone on, they have your IMEI and all the other info based off of that. They made it very clear that you can't use smartphone without data plan. It will be added automatically

Smarter thieves often change a phone's IMEI number so that if a device is reported stolen, its harder to track. Also a way to get around having a phone's specific IMEI number banned from a network, again usually because of theft.
I strongly believe AT&T is cracking down UNLIMITED DATA FOR NON SMARTPHONES trick.
I believe this deserves its own thread. Here's my story.
Bought unlocked .GS3 from expansys USA.
Went to AT&T store as new customer and got GoPlan for $50 everything unlimited. This plan gives you the same data that people can choose for non smartphones $10 a month.
Everything was working fine until this morning. In the notification bar I see data is active. It switches alot from H to H+ and 3G. This was happening when data was working fine. Anyways, now even when it says in the notification bar that it's on and working I can't use internet or do anything that requires data connection. My device is not rooted. All I did was got the phone...got the at&t Go Plan cut the sim with scissors to microsim and it was working fine for few days. NOW HERE IS WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING.
Called AT&T and spoke to several reps. Some of them obviously had no clue but the last rep made me kinda worried. She asked me for IMEI number. Before when I gave my .GS3 IMEI number they would tell me it comes up as an unknown device. This Chinese lady told me after I give her my .GS3 number it comes up as SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 ....WTF???? I thought ATT couldn't detect this when international phone is used ? Of course I denied and told her I was using old cheap Nokia which is not a smartphone. I don't know what she did but told me she would update it to make sure it's not a smartphone.
So how did they know I was using .gs3. Why is my data not working....what are my options here....

Nope.
I think your mistake is doing a go phone plan. They're probably more suspicious with that as you are not really a valued customer but a month to month guy.
Everything is working fine for me on a 2 year contract.

I can confirm that I had the exact same thing happen to me. Data worked fine until this morning. I can send and receive MMS, so the internet is definitely working. I called AT&T customer service and updated my number from my old, unlocked EVO 3D to my new GS3. They immediately recognized that it was a Galaxy S3. Data still didn't work. I had them change the IMEI in the system back to an unknown IMEI, but I'm still not getting any data services.

So you want to know how to use data meant for non smartphones on a smartphone?
Mine is still working fine on the $10 MediaNet plan. But then again, I never had to call them because I was still using this SIM in my International GS2 as well.
Best thing to do is find an old AT&T dumb phone and call in with that.

Dude stop being a troll.
i have an international i9300 and my wireless profile shows an unknown device still. *shrug*
same goes with an international i9100 on my other line
if you ever call 611..dont ever tell them what phone you have! just say "oh its some samsung"
Just don't do the go phone plan meant for go phones only. It probably comes up as a red flag when you change the SIM where is the normal plans you call in and ask them to change the IMEI and you tell them which phone it is.

Hm, hopefully you didn't get a phone that was returned or something because another person got it flagged somehow.
There was another user here that was the "3rd" owner of his SGS3. And his phone was flagged in the system as a SGS3.
What region did your phone come from? And ask the other dude that got his flagged as a SGS3 under a go phone plan.

can you elaborate on that? do you call in with any dumb phone with your SIM card in it, tell them to switch the data plan by giving them the # of the S3, and then switch the SIM?
A few wks ago, I got a text from AT&T stating that I went over my data limit & I checked my ATT account online to see whats up. It showed that I had a non-smartphone & 100mb data plan. I've been on a grandfathered unlimited plan forever & I had to call ATT to get my old plan back. It took over a hour to get things straighten out.
Honestly this didn't need to become a new thread, same stuff seems to be discussed in the benefits of att international I9300 thread.

No, once you call in they will see you are on an old dumb phone. Tell them you want the unlimited data plan for it. If they ask for an IMEI number, just give them the one from the phone you are calling in with.
After they set up the plan, take the SIM out and put it in your GS3. Good to go.

I agree.
I've been on the $10 plan for almost 2 years. I had them change it at my local store. No problems. I got the AT&T One X, switched to a normal plan. Got my GS3, went back in and had them switch me back to the $10 plan. They knew, they laughed, all was well.
Go to a store. If they ask to see your phone, you don't have it with you, its a generic flip phone. Done.
update:
I seriously think AT&T is catching up on this trick. I spent one hour on the phone with a lady who knew what she was doing. She put my device under UNKNOWN made sure I had data for non smart phones and we did everything and no connection. The only time I was able to connect was when she applied data for a smartphone. She tested out $5 50mbps of data and as soon as she applied this it worked. Since I'm on a prepaid goblin I had to get 1.GB for $25 unless I sort this out....what should I do....buy old at&t phone...get a new sim card and use it then put it in .gs3? I think as soon as u put sim card in on a smartphone it will detect. I can't pay $75 a month and get 1.GB of data
Hey all. I just found (but has probably been out for awhile) a new thing that StraightTalk and the sister companies are doing. They are now offering GSM based SIM Cards for any AT&T and T-Mobile (and some sprint i believe) networked unlocked phones. Link at bottom for StraightTalk Sim card. They have both the full size card and the micro sim too. (For the iPhone 4s guys) I ordered a sim card last week and will hopefully get it on Thursday (7/12/12). I'll post later how it is and all. If anyone else has or had or will do this too post away how it worked out for you. StraightTalk and Net10 are both offering the SIM card for only $14.99 right now and charge you for shipping SOMETIMES. I was able to get just in under the limit that they were offering Free shipping on all orders $14.99 and over. Good for people that want a new Cheap phone service but want to keep their GSM based phone or cannot afford a new phone.
Net10
StraightTalk
Excelent, awsome offert. But I will not enjoy it because I dont use Tmo or At&t.
@josuearisty: The SIM Cards can be used in any unlocked AT&T or TMO phone, ex. our Bravos. That's what I was talking about.
The SIM cards really work in about any unlocked GSM phone that works on 800mhz and 1900mhz bands.
Working......
Well my Sim chip came in yesterday, put it in my phone, went online and switched my equipment on www.straighttalksim.com. Well all was well yesterday after about 5min of easy work. Old phone turned off new one on. Ok. No data, no text's? huh? Oh ya! Switch the APN settings. Got the little red card that came with the chip and had the settings I needed. Cool I thought to myself. Punch in the settings, reboot, enjoy! Works! Cool. Make a test call, hmm. There's a ring, yea. Connects, yea. Can you hear me? Good. Everything works. Awesome. So I use it all day yesterday and what happens? You guessed it, battery dies. Ok fine, charge it. Charged overnight. Wake up. Checked my emails, didn't notice I was connected to my home wifi, was out side, sent off a text, it sent, I thought, waited, hmm, must still be asleep. Oh well. Took my son to school. Cool. Check my phone at school, no messages. Strange, I usually have something by now, it's been an hour. Make a call, "Were sorry but you have reached your service end date. To contune please add another airtime card or......" WTF!! WHAT HAPPENED TO MY 20 MORE DAYS LEFT! I JUST BOUGHT A DAMN CARD! Drive home PISSED. Called StraightTalk off the wifes phone. "Please hold for the next available customer service rep." ok shouldnt be that long "your expected wait time is TEN MINUTES", pause for information to sink in. WHAT!? Whatever. Then they answered. "How can we help you today Mister Jones?" You cut off my service, "Oh i'm sorry about that, let me transfer you to someone who can help you, may I do that now?" yes "Ok thank you and thank you for being......... yada yada" ok so next guy comes on "Hello how may I help you?" You cut my phone service off "Oh i'm sorry for that let's take a look at your account." So he does and then asks when did I start and when did I last buy a card and such and then he says please hold so I can look at the account. Well his hold I guess is just not talking, not the button. Well after about 6 min of just hearing him breathing he says "Ok mister Jones i've replaced 11 days of service for you, will there be anything else I can do for you today?" Umm you did what? "I've put the remaining days back onto your account that we're supposed to have transferred but didn't" Oh ok thank you that will be all for today. " I thank you Mister Jones for being a part..." CLICK! I really don't like talking to customer service people that much. So,, I've been having a fairly good experience except for the time I had no service.
Rating is interesting for this one. 7 out of ten for service (or having service), I guess 5 out of ten for the customer service people, and everything else is fine so far.
Your sig shows you running CM7? Mine or Quarx's? Need to know if I need to update the apns since Strait Talk is supposed to be there by default now.
No I use an old quarx one. If you need to know any apn let me know and I can find it for you. Most of the time I've seen that the apn settings are somewhere on the sim card and the phone saves them.

I don't. Straight Talk's Apn comes with CM9 by default and I can get it from there. Just checked my APNs with my CM7 and I need to add that one in....Is they're unlimited data "AT&T\Verizon 2Gb Unlimited" or "Sprint Unlimited"? I'm thinking of going to Straight Talk and dropping off my parent's AT&T Family Plan.
//I still think AT&T & Verizon should be taken to court for offering unlimited data in big letters on the ads while its really only 2gb of data -- hardly unlimited, small, unreadable, quick changing terms you can barley read at the bottom of a 48" 1080p screen shouldn't count; I wouldn't complain if the cap was at 50gb+, but you can barley watch a few youtube videos with 2gb. I can easily burn 1+ gigs a day just with rom development (repo syncing, up\downloading roms, mods, syncing\installing apps after a flash); factor in streaming music, social integration apps, YouTube, email, web browsing, navigation, push ads....I can go on, but ya'll get the point of the rant.
I don't have the capped data I have the unlimited one. I don't know if they do like T-Mobile and roll your speed back after a few gigs or not. Alot of mixed information is online so until I use it I don't really know.
Short version. I have unlimited data.

I have a friend who has it, and from what I understood from him, its unlimited until you run out of minutes. Not sure if they throttle it or not, but I can deal with throttled internet....its being charged $20 for every 2GB that bothers me more than anything. He's only had it for less than a month as well and isn't a geek or tech savvy.
Makes me wonder if there's some way to use a VOIP service for calls with Straight Talk so you'd never go over the minutes and lose internet...

I haven't looked around all that much but there are several voip options in the google store. I don't remember but I think you can use skype to call other skype users voip. I just pay the $45 a month and have unlimited everything for 30 days. I don't care about min or texts or data usage. I am watching how much data I'm using to see if they throttle me or cut me off. In the terms of service they do say to not tether or data but I am anyway. Netflix and youtube are also taboo to them as well but what do we care? I'? tethering to my laptop to watch netflix and youtube with open garden. I'm using the non-root open garden just to try it out and even though there is a very lax set of settings it works as it should. Only downside to the non-root app it that you have to have bluetooth on the receiving computer or device. Mines built-in on my laptop but not my wifes. As well the app doesn't work on her HTC rhyme.

My buddy does it by the minutes, didn't know they had an unlimited service for $45 -- that's not bad at all -- which is why I thought the voip option was an idea to get around that, but I'd rather pay $45 for the unlimited anyways since its cheaper then AT&T's (un)limited plan.

Only downside to the non-root app it that you have to have bluetooth on the receiving computer or device. Mines built-in on my laptop but not my wifes. As well the app doesn't work on her HTC rhyme.

Did straight talk cut you off for watching Netflix ? I called their customer service about netflix, and couldn't get a straight answer about whether or not they allowed it. (no pun intended)
Hello!
I have found this phone on amazon for 150 dollars and have decided I want it. However, I cannot afford a data plan nor do I need one. So I was wondering if there is a crack or bypass with the activation screen and can just use wifi? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I originally bought my DVP from Dell (without a contract) and happily used it on Wi-Fi only for several months, so you should be able to use the Wi-Fi without a data plan. Just slip your current SIM card and go to work.

I'm guessing this is a question specifically about AT&T forcing a data plan on you otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. Either that or shirtlessrabbit4 had a Palm webOS device, which is the last handset I remember which required a data plan to activate.
I don't know how AT&T checks if your using a proper smartphone, unless they just reference it against a database of IMEI numbers of AT&T branded phones. If that is the case, maybe you should buy a T-Mobile Dell Venue Pro, having a IMEI on record with only T-Mobile?
T-Mobile will require you to have a data plan, too... a pay-as-you-go $1.99/MB data plan. If you switch your data connections off in the settings, you won't have to worry about these insane charges, but you also won't be able to send MMS messages, even though MMS data is not metered.
The best option may be Simple Mobile or Straight Talk which have prepaid $40 and $45/mo monthly unlimited plans, respectively. Each "unlimited" plan has an actual data cap of around 2.5GB/mo. I don't think you even need to have your phone carrier-unlocked to use it on either MVNO, but DVP unlock codes are essentially free now anyway.
I noticed that there are a number of ebay sellers with "buy-it-now / or best offer" listings around $150 for condition new DVP handsets, so you could potentially score a lower price. Keep in mind that ebay buyer protection ensures your satisfaction, even if the seller does not accept returns as a policy.

Well my normal phone is on Verizon (I'm using it now), but I just wanted a windows phone 7 device to use as an alternate device to mod or use at home. So I meant more like no activations at all and no plan, just the device and on a wifi network. I guess in the open I should've said I can't afford ANOTHER data plan, and I surely don't need another phone number, just want to use a dvp without charges

Could I simply do what you did and just nix the sim card to get what I'm trying to do? Sounds simple

You might want to consider getting an HTC HD2 or a Samsung Focus. Seems like all the custom ROM development are on those devices. With the HTC HD2 you can dual boot Android ICS and WP7.5 Tango (with sideloadability, lots of mods, or non at all if you prefer.) The Focus is a standard Galaxy S handset with Windows Phone on it, and is easy to sideload apps on using WindowBreak.
Unless the keyboard is the draw to the DVP, I'd go with one of them.

Well the dell is cheaper and has the keyboard and a decent sized amoled display, so that's what caught my eye as well as price. BUT..... I will go for either of those if thats what it takes to get wp7 without a plan of any kind. I also saw the HTC arrive but more expensive........ could that work for what I want?

You can use any WP7 handset without any kind of voice or data plan. As far as price of the Samsung Focus, you might want to check used ones on ebay. I once bought a used Samsung Focus for $60 in perfect condition except for the broken SIM card reader. That kind of thing would be perfect for you. The Super AMOLED screen of the Focus is better than the AMOLED screen on the DVP, too.
Since you're interested in the Arrive and the Dell Venue Pro, I assume you're dead-set on a keyboard. All I can say is that if I didn't use my keyboard for text messaging so much, I'd definitely abandon the DVP in favor of a thinner phone.
