The Desire of HD2

Hiya - I am finally ok to upgrade with T-Mob! I been wanting the HD2 for a while, but now they are releasing the Desire (early April according to the latest info from T-Mob). Please tell me guys, should I wait for the Desire?
- Part of me loves WM part of me hates. Like when you want to make a call - it wont, or finish a call - theres always a few second delay or it doesnt want to stop!
I tried the HD2 in the T-Mob store, it looks great, love the keyboard etc... but it froze couple times. Is this really normal?
- I like the idea of Android.. but wonder if it still has teething probs...
All of you who had the HD2 plesae give your honest opinon... is it worth to take the plunge for the next 18 months or so?
cheers!!!
Go for the Desire... I have the HD2 and i don't regret buying it really... A very nice phone with great hardware etc... The problem is the software.. HTC, and its Sense, has done a very good job making the OS look pretty... And it is, no doubt about that.. The problem is this: Stability.... Every once in a while the phone crashes, becomes slow etc. and requires me to reset it, even pull the battery when its total chaos ... It's not THAT bad, but it pisses me off frankly
The good thing about WM is the ability to customize it.. The funny thing is that it's pretty much a requirement to do so, to make the phone's software act decent...
The desire has a smaller screen, but also a more comfortable form factor.. But, as i said, it all comes down to software and longsighted view... Android is a platform of the future, and even right now it has taken big steps towards mobile OS domination.. It's fast, stabile and good looking.. What more can you ask for?
but than again.. android also crashes... (I know cause my cousin told me..)
I've got the HD2.. and I'm very pleased with it.. and yes it anoys me when it crashes.. but this only happens with custom roms and not with the stock rom.
My opinon is that your choice shouldn't just be software related but it has to be the whole thing..
And the phone is good enough to survive the comming 2 years...
(especialy if we get an update to wm7 but its not confirmed yet. we'll hear that next month.)
To me me the HD2 is the best phone ever and curently there is no phone that is able to replace it!!!
yesterday I was holding my uncles touch pro 2 and was so slow to me..
I own a HD2 and love it, very very few crashes and the latest ROM from HTC fixes most problems people had at the beginning. I've got a friend who owns a Hero (Android + Sense) and complains all the time because of crashes and bad network signal and so on.
The Nexus One received a lot of bad press because of poor 3G signals but hopefully HTC have patched that so it shouldn't be an issue on the Desire.
Also, if WM7 is as closed as some make it out to be then I personally will be getting an Android next purchase. I had a G1 with some of the first iterations of Andriod and franky they were crap, but it has had some massive improvments since then and is looking very slick and has a great future ahead. I have not used any of the 2.0 versions but they have slowly been tempting me away from my HD2 and WM, the only thing holding me back is a spare pile of cash.
It all comes down to personal opinion and how much you want to do with it and if you want to tweak it. If you are more of a fiddly type and love messing with settings and stuff then get the HD2, if you just want to use it out of the box without doing anything to it then go with the Desire.
For me HD2 is my first WM phone and honestly I have no idea why are people slagging it so much. I have absolutelly no problems making phone calls, texting or doing anything else with my phone. It's been 2 months since I got and it crashed once and that was because of me installing some dodgy app. I think people moaning all the time just dont know how to use it properly. Its the same with Windows XP, Vista etc. Some of my pals restore their systems every few weeks while I've had my last XP instalation running for year and a half and it was still all right just a bit slow to boot up.
In conclusion - if you know what you doing there is nothing wrong with WM. If you want more idiotproof os go for android or iphone.
If the T-Mobile ROM is stable, then I would say get the HD2 with the bigger screen. I have the T9193 version and when it works, it is great. I have to do a lot more tweaking on it to get it to work the way I want it. The data connection constantly drops or is off even when I have full bars with the H logo. Youtube app doesn't work on mine, I have read there is a fix where I have to edit the registry to remove the cingular settings.
I want to try Android myself, I will ge the X10 when AT&T releases it.
I;ve own the HD2 for a month now with dutty's HG v0.9 ROM / 2.08 radio. and i dont know what crashes you guys are talking about. mines is completely stable.
buy the desire android gets ubdates more than windows mobile
HD2 is the best phone I have ever used. I have had it 3 weeks, not a single crash. I am still on the 1.48 ROM, had the sms sending issue, applied the htc patch, all working. everything works on my phone. Apart from sms everything worked out the box. I have applied all the tweak and improvements from Xda, made it that much better. Go with the HD2, you won't be sorry.

Yes, because it is a much younger platform that needs those updates. WM 6.5 is already quite stable and doesn't need all those updates.
Unless you are talking about GMaps, GGoggles etc. Because all those great free services that Google are offering are very temping.
I too own Hd2 and I dont really know wheter I totaly love it, or I hate it.
It is totaly fast compared to older devices. Winmo is great cuz it can be customizable. Winmo is stable base for app. I dont use HTC slowdown programs and It's quite satysfing.
On the other hand, winmo is quite slow and ugly. You have to customize, if you want decent device. Android is really looking great. Winmo 7 (windows phone 7 series) is total crap, full of LOOOOONG pointless animations, and no functionality (and ugly too). So there is no future. And android's future is quite bright, look at all these new and nice games for it.
Thats how it is. I love my HD2, but I'm really curious about android. So both ways are great choose if you ask me =)
Thanks
Thanks for your opinions/experience guys! Its going to be a tricky decision.. I normally go for the 18 month contract so hope I do the right thing. Never used android before, but it looks great, but then Im waiting now T-Mob to make me an offer I cant refuse...
In any case, you will have to wait until the end of March. By then, it will likely be clear whether the HD2 gets an upgrade to WP7 or not.
If the HD2 doesn't get an upgrade to WP7, then I'd say get the Desire. Windows Mobile 6.5 is dead (not yet, but soon). The Desire will at least get updates to future Android versions.
Right now, there are things that Windows Mobile does better, and there are things that Android does better. The quality of the applications on Android is certainly better than what you can find for Windows Mobile (there are about 30000 applications for both, but almost noone develops anymore for Windows Mobile 6.5).
Android has perfect integration with Google's services. Windows Mobile has not-so-perfect integration with Microsoft's services (e.g. you can't sync the calendar with Windows Live). Only Windows Mobile has good Exchange support, if you're an Exchange user.
Stability? That depends. I would not claim that one of them is more stable than the other. But Android works more smoothly (with transitions etc.).
My Nexus One has never crashed, and I have had it since before the launch.

class action against HTC/Microsoft?

What do you guys think of getting involved in a class action against HTC/Microsoft if HD2 is not allowed WP7? Now that WP7 is announced, many software companies are going to stop (or already stopped) developing for WinMo 6.5 and we are left outside with an already bricked 2 month old device (it's not even out for USA). I don't like paying $1.000 (yes it is that expensive where I live) for a device which will be outdated in 2 months. HTC and Microsoft should be more loyal to their customers than that. What do you all think?
HTC and Microsoft never promised a WP7S upgrade.
If you're thinking about raising a class action for something that wasn't in the contract of sale, you are, as we say in Scotland, an eejit (idiot).
Sell your HD2 now and be phone-less for 6 months, then buy a Wp7s capable phone. Or at the very least wait for an official announcement on whether it will be upgradable or not.
they never promised an upgrade, but they never said that we won't be able to use WP7 apps as well. Even when you buy a desktop PC with Windows, you're given the option of free upgrade when the new OS is imminent, else no one would buy. And that's when you can still perfectly use all the new applications on your old OS. Don't you feel kinda being cheated, is it only me??
bricked device? it still works doesn't it? you've got a year or so before 7 really hits the mass market, that doesn't stop your phone from working NOW.
do you look at cars the same way? I got my Renault Laguna, it's made in 2001 but I'm not moaning because they don't let me upgrade to the nice shiny 2010 model engine just because i have an older version.
I don't get the complaining about being able to have 7 on their phone when clearly it doesn't have the hardware (4 point multi touch, 3 buttons etc) that windows 7 needs.
I'm sure MS or HTC will take the OS as far as they feel like before 7 rolls out and I would not doubt that some of the clever code monkeys here on XDA will be able to cook up a fantastic 7 ROM that will work in some way on our currently working and rather impressive HD2's
why are people complaining about not having win7 available on the device when it is out in about 7 months time? Did you buy the HD2 SOLELY on the basis it would have this upgrade in OS? Did HTC promise you that it was going to upgraded to win7 when it came out?

WP7 is not new version of WM6.5. Call it Zune Phone and it all becomes clear.
And even if free upgrade is offered sometimes with desktop computers, it clearly is stated as a part of the contract. Here it was not. If you don't like it, you should have not bought it.
I had thought of hanging on to my Touch Pro until WP7 came out. I ended up getting the HD2 and I've never had so much fun with a phone.
We are spoiled rotten in this community. I can get my device to do anything I want it to do and a few things I hadn't even thought of thanks to the hard work, generosity and smarts of the good people who contribute to these forums.
Come on! We don't even know if we will like WP7 yet! Enjoy the amazing device you have. Modify it, flash it, load a thousand apps on it if you like.
By the time WP7 is stable, usable and has a load of good apps, we'll probably be good and ready for an upgrade.
If the HD2 does everything you need in a phone what does it matter if it will run 7 or not? Especially if HTC never promised it would.
If its just for epeen status you're gonna look like gypsy joe anyway come the time trying to run a new OS on an old phone. Either way I am sure some bright spark on XDA will make 7 run on the HD2.
Also remember that WP7 is brand new OS with no applications at all. It will take at least a year till it will start to be usable for basic operation. We don't know how hard it will be to adapt actual applications. It might be minor modifications, it might be totally impossible, and everything would have to be done from the scratch.
Yes .. we all want new better WM .. but WP7 is just not that.
How many more threads are we going to get on the same subject.
WM6.5.5 is NOT being withdrawn and will continue to support the business users. From what i've seen of wm7, its "pants" and not suitable for business use, but thats my opinion.
I find it difficult to beleive that so many of you purchased the phone based on the pretence that it would be upgraded to WM7. At the end of the day, you will get it anyway - albeit not from HTC but from XDA.

you are right but most applications developers stoped developing for wm6.5 and starts to develope for the upcoming wp7 series so it is wm6.5 end (but not in an official way)
reasons why this bull
1 in the box which my htc hd2 was piece of paper saying that this phone would get a upgrade to wm7
2 there footage of wm7 on the htc hd2
3 the fact that ms always denie all rumours about all their products
4 no device has 4 point mutil touch if was the case this would be a big deal for microsoft as apple owns the patents for true mutil touch screens
5 windows specs change all the time and this is true for all software
6 the htc hd2 pro is coming out and professionals would want wm7
a piece of paper may say they will do 7 but maybe the rules changed and they discovered in the full release version they can't run wm7
i'm sure the initial idea was great but reality has deemed the hd2 not suitable for wm7
would a pro want an OS that's not allowing backward compatibility of their "pro" apps? no so maybe they'll stick with 6.5xxxx
have you actually tried wm7 yet? all this fuss and it might turn out to be rubbish then i guess you'll bring another class action against MS to say you want 6.5 back
whether it be Apple/MS/HTC they can't please everyone but to rant about it BEFORE the OS is out is pretty pointless. think logically rather than throw toys from pram please
I think WP7 will be business oriented. Only think they can do better then the others would be exchange synchronization. Otherwise I see no reason why would anybody buy it. And before new apps are done for it, iPhone will have new version, Android will be at 3.0 and another players may show up.

Sorry guys, I couldn't help it
this forum gets dumber by the day.
I'll Stick with 6.5!
Why does anyone want WP7 anyway? My phone works just the way I want it (now, after a few problems initially), it is fast, looks great and makes most other phones look like they were just dug up in an episode of Time Team!
I have just about every app I could want, running beautifully and doing pretty much everything I could ever need. If I was offered WP7 today I would say no! An untried OS with no software support for at least another 6 months (after release) and we don't know how customizable or flexible it will be... I'd be mad to jump ship from 6.5!
When I know what the new OS actually is, when I know I can get all the software I require and that I can make the phone the way I want it and that the OS is something I actually like THEN... I'll have a new device that will have even more bells and whistles and this won't be an issue...

Update on Android on HD2 - New Article

Hey all,
I have been waiting for news on this and it has been May since there has been any word on the Android OS being able to run on HD2s. Supposedly they have gotten over most of the major conflicts with this anticipated pairing. Check out some of the information from this article below:
Title:
HTC HD2 Android Port Makes Strides, Nears Release [Community Overcomes Problems Plauging HTC HD2 Android Port, Hopes to Have Public Release Available Soon[
Info:
With Windows Mobile dying a slow and painful death, Windows Phone 7 right around the corner and Android gaining a considerable portion of the smartphone marketshare along with buzz, the HTC HD2 remains a device lingering in limbo, begging for some attention. Regarded as one of the best Windows Mobile 6.5 powered handsets with a 4.3-inch capacitive display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 576MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, microSDHC slot and WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/3G the HTC HD2 lacks no where in terms of hardware, but arguably everywhere in terms of software.
...
Apparantly, the port was plagued with problems regarding the HD2′s processor along with the Linux boot tool dubbed HaRET that would be used to actually make the Android port. Luckily, those problems have been overcome giving the HTC HD2 Android port the much needed kick to near public availability. Be sure to check back soon as we track the port’s progress.
If/when this port is made available, will all of you HD2 owners out there make the jump from Windows Mobile to Android? If not, why?

I am not sure how true this is but hopefully it does come out soon cause i do miss my Android OS. Let me know how you guys feel about the article if you want to search for it.
I also have heard that someone actually has a working Windows Mobile 7 on a HD2, its in the development stage, can someone post on that if they know more. I am hoping for a dual boot so I can use both and have the best of both worlds.

hey theres a pretty cheezy app in the omarket that looks like android its basicly like the sbpshell i guess but its kinda cool to mess around with =) and i cant wait for andriod i check up on it every day haha i hate this winmo 6.5 crap
Keep in mind we are still a long way from a fully functional port that you would actually want to replace winmo with. I wouldn't expect a fully working port that can actually use most of the hardware (bluetooth, wifi, gps, camera, etc.) and that works like an actual android phone for at least a year... and I would consider that fast development. Look at all the other ports for other winmo phones... none of them are fully functional yet... they all have missing parts and bugs. Great progress has been made in the last week for the hd2, but theres still a long way to go.
guess if you could do a dual boot with windows and android..would that make it the first hybrid OS? maybe call it WinDroid..or has that already been coined?
check out the twitter page where they posted a pic of the hd2 running ubuntu

There are several other WinMo phones that can boot into android... this isn't the first winmo device there working on this for. That's how we pretty much know what to expect with the port and how it will take a long time to get it fully functional... They'e been porting android to winmo devices for years... even before there was an android device released.... but not one port is fully functional yet like a dedicated android phone. These android ports are fun to play with and if theres specific apps you want to use its nice to be able to boot into android... but they usually aren't good enough to replace winmo as your daily phone os for a long time. So don't expect your HD2 to become as functional as an EVO or any other android phone anytime soon.

Like I said earlier... the android port is not going to be as good as an android phone. Your not going to want to use it full time and replace windows with it for at least a year. You shouldn't have gotten a HD2 if you don't like winmo, because thats the only os that will run well on the phone for a long time. The android port will be nice to play with, but its going to be very buggy and not very functional for a long time. Look at the android ports for the other winmo phones... and they've been under development for years.
I don't know about that...I've used the port on both the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 and both are REALLY good. Really...the ONLY thing that stops me from using the TP2 port in everyday use is the "no external speaker". It's usually not a big deal durring work hrs since it's on vibrate all day anyway...but when im home and stuff gets loud...vibrate doesn't work for me. The only other things that don't work I believe are camera, bt, and gps(which KIND of works). None of those 3 would stop me from using a phone every day. The Android port for the TP2 is blazing fast compared to other devices with the same processor(i.e. g1/mytouch) and offers you that beautiful wvga resolution(480x800). if and when the HD2 gets to that point...i'd use WM durring the day for work, and Android by night lol
Is triple booting possible?
I thuroughly enjoy the freedom that the HD2 allows us. If you know how to us WM propperly, there isn't anything that this hardware can't handle. Adding the ability to boot into Android, or WP7 for that matter,is simply an added bonus. Will I install it on my phone? Of course. There isn't much that I haven't installed on my phone. But did I buy this in hopes of a port to another OS? No. I would have bought a phone that came with said OS if I needed that.
Thank you to all the developers who have worked tirelessly to make our phones so much fun. Keep doing what you do for those of us who can't.
^i agree wholeheartedly. I bought this phone after having a G1 and before that having a Wing, MDA and SDA. I am used to WinMo and Android and though I love Android, I can't say I'm dissatisfied with WinMo at all. I love the freedom to flash roms and all the different sorts of customization options I've got. If Android is what you want, I'd say don't get the HD2 from the start.
Speaking of Win 7 I hope the developers are working on it for the HD2. Rumor was that it will not be able to run on it.

Why even bother if it is soo buggy and not fully functional? Just for fun? I don't get it if it is sooo far away from a fully functional port why is everyone so excited. Sorry but your statement makes me feel like this android port is a big waste of time. Im sure next time I get a new phone I will try out an ANDROID phone.
The reason we are excited is because it brings new life to our phones, it allows us the freedom of choice. I love Windows and I love Android and the prospect of getting WP7 makes me excited because I don't have to shell out money for a new phone when I have a phone that I love right here, to do whatever I want and make my phone what I want it to be. It isn't a waste of time, it is a huge step to the development for a Android port to an original Windows phone. Saying it's a huge waste of time is like saying cooked roms is a huge waste of time, it adds another spectrum to our devices allowing us to customize, mod, hack, and personalize as we please.
I just booted Android on my HD2 and I can not wait till it's stable and I can play around with it even more. I got to the Set Up Device screen and played with the menu ! I'll post a video soon!

HD2 WP7 Hack good for microsoft?

I've been thinking about this and surely it is in their interests for the hack to happen, we have android already. so if you grow to like android chances are when you get a new phone/contract you'll get an android device..?
Which brings about my point .. consider the hd2 a try before you buy for your next Gen wp7 device .... I'm going to give it a go myself but I really like android ATM ... that cotulla is some guy
My thoughts I posted on Pocketnow:
I have an HD2 with 6.5 on it. As 6.5 has been "killed off", I am now running Android as my daily driver... And it's fantastic! I've already spent £30 in the App store, I'm beginning to use Gmail, Google, etc.
If MS choose to give me a code, then I will do the same with WP7, and have a fair trial of both before deciding what works best in my life.
But at the moment, I can't trial it other than in shops/off friends, and it's becoming a one-horse race for Android. If MS want to tempt the many many thousands of HD2 users, they should turn a blind eye to this.
My hardware is less than a year's old, there's no way I'm buying a new phone for another 12 months.
It's absolutely good, I just bought a HD7 after having used WP7 on my HD2 because it was just flakey enough, and I missed having full use of my camera... proof that the hack is good.

the hd7 is one of the nicest looking phones out there, but the hd2 is is just king of all phones, being able to run both solid builds of wp7 and android.
if i lost my hd2, i'd gladly pay out the same money i did a year ago for it
Yes, i have the same idea) I have HD2 with WP7, and now a im going to buy HD7 =)
I have tried both WP7 and Android on the HD2 and would have stayed with WP7 if it wasnt for not being able to watch flash or copy and paste, and microsoft is just giving away codes i personally have called twice for activation codes and was able to use marketplace and everything. I will forever be a fan of android though especially on our HD2's because there are so many different flavors and im a big fan of choice, and android also has a better market. The apps for WP7 suck to me but i did love the tiles.
It's definitely worked on me! I can't even imagine using another OS after using WP7. I will be getting an HD7 once it's time to upgrade. I'll always keep, use, & love my HD2, but will go to a native WP7 device soon. The apps I used & need on Android are now on WP7 & superior to the Android versions, so I'm very happy with WP7. A few minor changes & this will be the closest to perfection mobile OS, imo.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
the full power of Android and the "beautiful" design of WP7 will be the perfect combination to MobileOS right?
HD2 is a powerful machine till now.
Shall other devices even more powerful upcome soon? Maybe a full Windows 7, MacOS or Linux in a 4.3 inches screen device with the camera and phone features is what we are waiting for!!! or not, but I found that I love how simple is WP7.
peace out fellas!!!
Lovin WP7 on the HD2. My only issue is MMS messages, but this is definitely going to make me get a HD7 once my upgrade comes around.

Mango update

After today's press conference it looks like there are many cool new features coming with the Mango update. I guess we'll have to wait some time to see it fully functional at our HD2
I can't wait!
I really can't wait either! God, I love my WP7 cell now! Can't stand using Android with all the bugs! MANGOOOO!
Moved your non developmental thread over to the general section.
Peace,
Josh
great stuff!

We must wait for DFT Sir
Vegas?
We should have a bet going. Over or under.
Over = Mango on our HD2 on or sometime after Windows official release.
Under = Mango on our HD2 before Windows official release.
What do you guys think? Can we get a line at one of the casinos lulz!?!?!
My bet: Under, as I hope so because I don't know if I can wait more than three more months!

i would bet for "under" too, but if i had to pick a month it would probably be september.
i find it's very improbable for us to have it waaaay before the official release.
... just a gut feeling
edit:
then again, i might be wrong

That's great! If MS releases Mango to devs as soon as 4 weeks time, then hopefully someone or DFT can port it to our HD2 shortly after. But the thing is, i've heard rumors that DFT has Mango already on our phone. I haven't heard anything that is definite though.
So from what I gather, when MS releases Mango it will not include HD2 but we have to wait until someone port a rom for HD2?
I own a HD7 right now and unhappy with the phone because of no visible SD slot (unless I risk voiding warranty and mod it), no custom ringtone , no flash support, no bluetooth sync with my PC for file transfer... all of which Ballmer promises will be fixed in Mango. Oh and also no Android rom for HD7.
All of those reason make me wanna downgrade to a HD2 that has a SD slot and Android rom but my concern is it will take too long for HD2 to get Mango port.
Also, how stable is the Android rom for HD2? Particularly with Market apps. I once owned a Chinese clone of Diamond II dual boot with WM6.5 and Android 2.2, but Android on that phone can't use most Market apps.
What should I do? Keep my HD7 and have faith in M$ and Balmer to fix the issues or downgrade to HD2 now?

I think u should stick with the HD7! WP7 Mango update will be sweeeeet! I've personally tried everything from WM6.5, Android and WP7 on the HD2, and I think Android is the worst OS of them. It's slow and ugly looking.. I will stick with WP7 for now couse it has all the main features I need and it looks cool and it's FAST!

I've never owned an HD7, but I played around with it a few times. To be frank, there wasn't much to play with! WP7 fun is potential and not actual. I'd take actual over potential any day of the week. So, we'll need something in the meantime while WP7 can go from potential fun to actual fun. The solution for that would be Android. It's a no risk if on SD. Don't like a particular rom just erase it and get another one. Best yet, lets get 2-3 builds at the same time! What's great about that is your WP7 is waiting patiently for you with a simple reboot. Can your HD7 do that? No? Get an HD2 my friend! You may even venture onto Linux if you care to.
Very well put. Just a few questions:
1. HD2 WP7 rom is not offical MS release right? So when MS release Mango, HD2 will have to wait until someone cooks the rom?
2. Is there a likelihood or some project in progress to create English Android rom for HD7? Is it even possible to do this without a SD slot? I saw some youtube video of Chinese version of Android rom for HD7 but it's hard to tell whether it's a HD7 clone phone or a real one.
If it wasn't for Ballmer's promise of 500 new features and all the hype floating around, I'd have got rid of this HD7 long ago.

1. Correct, as WP7 for HD2 is not official, there might be some waiting time. NoDo was pretty fast, though.
2. Maybe there is a project, but afaik, nothing available yet.
Check it out!!!
Check this link out!! Finally the whole scoop on MANGO!!! Thought I should share with everyone else whose's waiting for this update. CAN"T WAIT FOR MANGO!!!!!
