I usually drive my phones until they die. Well the exception was the Samsung Instinct that I had for 27 months. Piece of crap.. Right now I'm pretty much locked into a Kingdom ROM. As long as it works, or I can fix it I'll keep it. I still own my first Ham Radio setup(1975). A used Hallicrafters S-38A Receiver(post WWII), and a Heathkit AT-10 transmitter(1950's). I have a stack of tubes, and other parts to keep them running for years to come along with all the other old electronics that I have hanging around. My kids are gonna hate me when I kick.

I'm rolling my Evo until the wheels fall off.
It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice.

I plan on keeping my EVO until it breaks, or Sprint covers my house in LTE, and there is a hackable replacement option for my evo

+1. The Evo 4g proves itself daily as one of, if not the best smartphone on the market. Overall functionality is amazing. I am always learning about new technology and the old Evo still gets **** done. I couldn't buy another phone and get 25 hrs of hard use battery life with all my data, GPS, etc enabled. Full HDMI mirroring. Setcpu...the list doesn't end. Just a really really great phone.

Im waiting until thr end of this year to upgrade to evo 3d or if there is a better phone coming out.

I had that PoS phone too... I hated it so much that one day I decided to drop it in water... and then start whipping it around the room like a bouncy ball... damn thing refused to die... the bottom right cracked and separated but was still fully functional...
edit... I refuse to treat the evo the way I did the instinct

UNLESS YOU HAVE a 3D TV in your home. the evo 3d is a waste of money. I've got 4 3D tv's. :-D and 3 3D LED screens in front of me with my super computer.

I'm keeping my Evo until the Within comes out (assuming the Within is hackable). Even so, I'm keeping my Evo so I can learn how to dev.

I'm keeping this baby till it explodes... Can't let a OG go down unless it's in a ball of flames. Only way to go out!

Planning on keeping it until it doesn't have life anymore. It's a fully capable phone with great developer support.

I'm not letting go of this puppy until it decides to kick the bucket, even if I replace it with a new phone and it becomes a WiFi-only device, just like my iPhone 3GS.

Like all my other phones before, just waiting for a real upgrade. But seems like its gonna be awhile longer since the Evo is still top of its class and nothing better in sight.

This is more than a phone, its a personal assistant, no not that kinda personal assistant picking up coffee. I'm locked in for a while and i happen to have caught a Guy trading in a 2.2 evo for a evo 3d... So i gave him $50... This will be my developer phone especially for the ice cream upgrade. I do believe as they move up in dual processors, the apps and games will be one of a kind. At that point the upgrade might important. At least with laptops ungrading ram is nothing but plug n play that you can do by yourself.. you are stuck on the device side of things to keep you on a Ferris wheel of upgrading. I rather sign an agreement with HTC to exclusively use and buy there products and get a deal. This way HTC can already project what consumers want in a phone and what developers would like to see from a software/hardware stand point. Then offer you options of what carriers you can use there device on. What carrier allows unlock devices, better plans etc. #justsaying

I'll be getting the 3D later this year, but even after the fact I'll be hanging on to my 4g for a good long time.
My old Hero has already been "re-purposed" as a full time media player and I expect I'll do the same for the 4g.
No, these phones are way too powerful to trade-in to be sold as a refurbished unit, or worse, just toss into a drawer, once their life as phone has ended.

I was totally going to keep mine... until I dropped it out of a moving Jeep while rock crawling. Needless to say, she didn't survive. Now, I'm in the market for a new phone and cant decide what to get. Nine more days till my upgrade, its exciting.

I almost dropped mine the other day, was juggling my evo and my macbook pro and caught the evo and the macbook took the fall. I LOVE MY EVO

I have a brand new nexus s 4g sitting on my night stand and use this rooted evo instead. Just works better and with decks aosp rom my battery lasts as long as the nexus running decks rom.

I ditched the epic.

This is not a bash thread. I owned the epic for roughly 4 months. It is a very good phone. Reason I dropped it was due to it felt cheap. The phone was pretty loose concerning the slider. Also I never used the keyboard. The amoled screen is nice but I needed a bigger screen. So I switched to the evo. And from what I can tell during normal everyday use is that its just as fast. I don't game and I know the epic is better for gaming. I still think the epic is a damn good phone. Just sharing my experience. Also even with gps turned on so far the battery life on the evo is a little bit better. It does not get hot during web browsing like the epic did.
Im still here though. Been here since the epic launched and still glad to try to help other if they need it.

My only complaint with Samsung is the software. They make awesome hardware, though. I think they do it on purpose because if they matched a software engineer to eke out everything from the hardware, you wouldn't really care about buying a new phone so much.
Even though Samsung sucks at supporting their Products, it'll be hard to go to any inferior screen.

Not sure how you can get better battery life on a stock EVO. The hardware in the Epic is simply more power efficient than the EVO, it's a fact.

Love the epic...agree the slider mech sux....
Ive never seen a problem with the sliding mech. Matter a fact I also have a moment and the intercept and those mechs are fine as well. I don't see how they're bad.
Anyway At this point jumping to the Evo isn't a bad idea at all if you want to. All of this "Epic is just a better machine" means squat when it's not even updated with an official Froyo yet. It's like having the most advanced yatch in a desert.
I for one love my epic but the second something esle comes along. I think i'll be leaving myself. Unless the device that comes along is also made by samsung. Then no thanks.

Well stock 2.2 battery life so far is great. Stock for stock there pretty close honestly. The epics display eats a ton of battery.
Also another thing I am noticing. On the epic I used roam control due to no sprint signal at work. If I left it on automatic the epic would lose signal, the radio would then reset itself 2 times before it would go to roam. So I used roam control to just roam only. On the evo it seemlessly switches between home and roam without completely losing the radio.

No it doesn't. Its actually much more efficient than the Evo's.

Agreed. The Tegra 2 LG Optimus looks pretty appealing, if it gets the advertised battery life. Wonder if it'll come out for Sprint.
That said, I do play some Super Mario now & then on the Epic. The keyboard + Game Gripper is nice for that. I can't do the screen controls, too slow.
I love the Epic to death, but Samsung support sucks.
To the person mentioning switching ... HTC shift.
I know a few buddies who went from the epic to the Evo. Both good devices. Sprint kind of limited.

Evos a great phone. I had both the epic and the evo, switched back and forth for awhile before deciding in the Epic. The epic IMO is quicker, but the development on the Evo may have changed that by now, idk. I will say that my evo always had better battery life than my epic. Same apps and same usage, both with the Evo on 2.1 and 2.2. Battery isnt a big deal to me personally tho since I always keep a spare battery. Enjoy your Evo. I personally miss the development compared to the epic, but im hopeful that that will changer soon. If you end up not liking it, sell it. I sold mine for twice what I paid. My wife just sold her second evo for $550 cash off craigslist.

I've had a person on Craigslist practically begging me to switch his 1 month old Evo, for my epic. I have been really torn between what to do. I really like this phone, and it is only gonna get better when 2.2 offically releases and the source code drops. I think I would regret it if I traded and it turned out the epic is being pushed beyond what any other phone has done before performance wise with the release of the source. T-mobile just got their release for 2.2 today, so hopefully we are not far behind (ya I know, we are on CDMA).

The epic is my first samsung. I always have HTC from the ppc 6700 to the evo. I switched from the evo. Even tho I do agree the epic feel's cheap, but it does have better hardware than the evo.
Deal breaker for me was the camera, I was Surprised how crappy the evo was to take pic's, but at least the epic sux's less, it's actually pretty good.
Development is slower, but it's still gets plenty of love. I for one don't plan on flashing every other day.

If its the release that I think your speaking of. It was for T-Mobile (UK) not T-Mobile (USA). I thought the same thing once I read about it, but read more and its for the UK.
I have both the Epic and the EVO. I love both phones, but I like the EVO a bit better. I'm sure my reasoning is totally different from others (as expected). I would love to compare the two with 2.2, but for obvious reason I cannot. I'm VERY tempted on rooting my Epic finally. Battery life (for me, as I cant speak for others) have been great on both. But again, everyone has their different uses on their phones.
Well imop, I wouldn't of down graded... When they come out with a better phone damn near every 6 months. I would've stuck with the Epic till something better came out ( like the dual processor ) thats coming... But if you got-it like that just to buy 500 dollar phones because it feel cheesy ( And I agree ) then you made the right decison...

In my opinion, I think the Epic is a great phone, the only complaint I would make is the battery life. Then again I use my phone constantly and run many tasks at the same time, but I'm sure emulators don't help either lol. As for the slider, that made all the difference when debating on buying an epic or evo. Even if it is a little loose the qwerty is almost perfectly spaced and is probably the best one i have used on any phone (and I have gone through a lot). As for the software we all knew that Samsung sucked at providing it, but thanks to hard working people there are plenty of ways to get the newest android versions through ROMs which don't take too much work to use.
Personally I don't plan on changing my epic until it can no longer support newer android versions, but that's just me
Here is the link, 1 of out of 2 I saw today for T mobile customers getting Froyo for their Galaxy S phones.

HTC EVO turns one year older

You could say the HTC EVO had a good run and still to this day has an advantage over its competition, but now with the arrival of newer and beefier-spec'd phones, the EVO is already one foot in the grave...or is it? Let us be proud of what the EVO gave to us that other phones didn't for months...
1.) America's first WiMax/4G phone - We've enjoyed running a 4G network for 4 or so months before other carriers hopped onboard
2.) first Android phone with front facing camera - it didn't take long for other competitors to have one, IPhone4 for example..but ours was fully functional, no wifi only.
3.) the kickstand - not the first phone with a kickstand. it kickstarted the trend into other HTC phones- Inspire 4G, Thunderbolt. i don't see the competition having kickstands on their phones...or maybe they just don't care about it.
4.) Android OS - what other phones can say they have run Eclair, Froyo and NOW Gingerbread in the span of their lifetime?
5.) the XDA community - the best support from the developers with the most ROMs than any other phone available. there's almost two-hundred roms available according to the list at PPC geeks...although half of those are not supported anymore..but still that is alot of roms...
there are probably more i can't remember. feel free to chime in.
in summary, i'm still keeping my EVO even when i'm gonna replace it soon with something better. nope not going to trade it in or sell it on ebay. love my evo.
This has been the best phone I have ever owned hands down. When I get my 3d, this will be staying in the family. My eldest daughter is just dying for me to give her my evo, so I guess I will.

In July, I will have it for a year. First phone I kept for more than 6 months (not including my old Nokia 8260 from almost a decade ago, which I had for ALMOST a year). I just discovered rooting and flashing ROMs, so honeslty... I'll probably keep it even longer! With all the different ROMs etc... It's almost like a different phone with every flash!
Today, I have used my EVO for one full year. That is the longest I have ever used the same model phone consistently... in my entire life. And it is definitely still not slow.
Only phone that I have had that hasn't felt obsolete after a month. Our Evo has stayed on the front lines for a whole year!! I am a proud owner.

I've had mine for a little over 2 months now. The reviews from peers were what made me get it then and not wait for the 3D (well and the ? about rooting the 3D)
I love it so much, my wife just got one so we could be the same. It's clearly the best phone I have ever owned.

I think I'll stick with the EVO until I/O next year.
I love this phone. If I didn't just get a tablet then I'd be itching for a new phone. Now that I have a tablet though... I hardly tinker with the phone anymore haha.
I got my EVO last summer. As soon as I saw my brothers, I had to have one. I plan on keeping mine for a while. It has been fun flashing roms and using the apps. I am still happy with mine.

I have really been looking at new phones...

And I came to the conclusion that the Evo 4g is the best phone ever invented. It does everything. I have been rooted and currently left sense due to battery life. Deck 1.2.1 and sz 2.2.1 cfs SBC is the best I have ever run. The Evo offers full HDMI, 4g, great wifi, amazing battery life, I just found out I can connect a wii remote and play my nesoid and mirror any game and play 2 players w my daughter on the big screen. From a capability standpoint I have given up. There is no other phone on the market that offers me these features. Sure. Dual core. I could care less. My old Evo still rocking 1700s quadrant (for those that care) and linpacks 40+. I don't have it maxed out all the time. Lol it just works.
I Only started this thread to tell the community thank you for making/helping my Evo stomp ass on every smart phone that has challenged it! You the community have never asked me for a donation. Never begged for money. And always help when I need information.

And this, I believe, is why HTC doesn't want to unlock the bootloader. Look at how many people just on this forum have started looking at other phones after they got stuck being unrooted. HTC doesn't want you to love your EVO forever; just until the newer model comes out. The developer community for the Supersonic has been amazing, and breathed a whole new life into the phone long after people were supposed to be getting tired of it.

That's a good point. A friend of mine just got the 3D. He came from a Windows mobile phone. He has been going on and on about it but the stuff that he likes are things that I have had on my rooted EVO for a while. I think his excitement is Android based and not based on that particular phone. I have compared mine and just can find enough reason to switch before I see what the development looks like. My rooted EVO is only a small step behind the stock 3D, IMO.

doesn't mean anything. just that sprint doesn't want it on its shelves anymore in order to sell their new devices.
I'm assuming HTC wants people to upgrade to either the 3D or the Kingdom when it releases as the Hero 4G under Sprint.
Rumor has it that the Kingdom will be a tad cheaper than the 3D. It's basically an Evo with a bigger screen and a worse camera but better hardware specs. It seems like it will be Sprint's new flagship model for some time and will probably be used to tempt all the people that are still happy with their Evo 4Gs out of hiding.
If the Evo 4+ makes it to sprint, that will be the one I am interested in...but only if I can have what I have now. I could only consider it a downgrade to go to a phone that can not do what my current phone does...really not interested if its faster...if it can't do all I have now damn the Evo is nice. I really can't think of another phone that after rooting can do. ALL the things I'm allowed to do due to the amazing development teams
I love my evo 4g
will only upgrade to a phone that's actually superior like 2.0ghz quadcore processer with 16 gig internal, 8 ram with like 1080 resolution screen 8 megapixel camera. 3 megapixel front camera and better gaming than nvidas kal-el chip
But as there aren't going to be any like that for a while I'll stick with what I've got

I don't go for the conspiracy theory that THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO LIKE YOUR PHONE. This is nonsense. The more you like it the more HTC phones you will buy, and the more you will recommend it to friends. The locking seems to be due to carrier pressure, because the carrier pays for the tech support calls when people screw them up when rooting, overclocking, etc. You call HTC with a screwed up phone and they will tell you to call Sprint ;-)
Just yesterday, the Evo3D root came out, and the instructions led many hundreds of people to have to call tech support to get the phone connected to the network again! This is no joke, I was one of those who called. One of the rooters asked the Sprint rep, and he said he had personally gotten close to 70 calls just yesterday with the same "Error 16" issue due to the new root procedure!
Beyond, that, I agree, EVO 4G rules. I got a 3D, and I do not like it as much as the OG.

I have never owned a g2x. I merely made this post because I feel it is the best well rounded phone for all my needs. HDMI mirroring really makes this shine. The wiimote app only gets used occasionally but still very sweet and it works just like I have a damn old school nes haha. It just fits me and HTC locking bootloaders lol. They will eventually get unlocked. Not a big deal. Then we will all forget about the 3 weeks spent with a horribly locked 3d/sensation lmao.

ok so here the deal. i might get a evo, but im not sure if it will be better in anyway then my epic. now i want to get a evo 3d but dont have the cash. so my question is, should i get a evo or just stick with my epic? they both are about the same spec wise but that doesnt mean one isnt faster than the other. any ideas? now i would be keeping my epic incase i dont like the evo but i dont want to get it and wast my money.
thanks =)

Yeah, I'd have to say you should save money and keep your Epic. You're able to make phone calls and do the already important things you need a phone for. So save up man.

What would be the advantage of getting the Evo if you already have the Epic and it's working?
Both phones are great, but I prefer the screen on the Epic, so I'd stick with it. Especially since it will save you money.
im just board of my phone, thats the only reason. and my keyboad is litteraly starting to fall apart. my space key is in 3 peices, superglued on. no lie
Evo all they way!!!
Obviously I am kidding. Keep the Epic and save the money.

I'd wait for a new device that is better than what you currently have. Otherwise you're making a lateral move.
If your eligible for upgrade, amazon has all sprint phones on sale for a penny until midnight tonite. (Nov 28th)
Including the evo 3d.

i probably am, but my dad (family plan) NEVER resigns contracts....haha like never. we had verizon for like 8years, with out ever resigning a contract....lol
ok well thanks guys for all your input, ill just keep looking for a evo 3d on craigslist haha =) maybe one will be in my price range soon.
There's an Evo 3D in the market place for $200 in really good shape. Its a steal for that cost but the seller is only offering it at that price for today.

If you had neither phone, the answer would likely be easy: get the Evo (even if it were simply the Evo 4G -- and not the 3D -- we were talking about it would be the better choice given the heavy handful of unnecessary complications the Epic 4G comes along with like GPS, accelerometer quirkiness and lagging CM support [not to mention lagging manufacturer support]).
Given that you actually already have an Epic 4G, the answer is a little tougher. It would be easy to say: "Try and stick it out for now. The Epic's a decent phone. Load up some lean, optimized ROM's and it may satisfy you for quite a time longer."
Sure that would be easy for me to say, but it also comes from the view of subsidized phone buyer that isn't used to giving $200 and not receiving a top-2 tier phone. But wait, what are we talking about?? "they both are about the same spec wise" is way FALSE...
The Evo 3D is a top-2 phone on the Sprint network (it should have twice the potential processing power of the Epic 4G, does have twice the RAM [which, btw, I would expect to be the solution for the majority of any slowdowns you may be experiencing with your Epic], and if we are to continue to distinguish their specs... it also has 35% more screen real-estate, resolution-wise [if that matters to ya]). If you can indeed buy it contract-less for the same price everyone else typically pays for a top-tier-er on-contract: just buy the darned thing.
Disclaimer: I have never used, nor completely read any reviews on, and do not explicitly 'follow' the happenings of the Evo 3D. The above recommendations are based on solid common sense, but should not be confused to include personal experience with the device.
I own both and I have to say that the epic is WAY faster even when the evo is on an AOSP rom. Also, the epic screen is way better...

Keep the epic. By the way, why would you want an Evo 3D? The hardware is almost dated by now, and it'll definitely be out-of-date in the coming months with quad-core. Also, if you've played with the Epic 4G touch, then it'll blow you away. It is way smoother than the Evo 3D, and the battery life is much better. The Evo 3D's battery isn't awful, but with medium usage, you'll barely survive a day.
If you're looking toward a new phone, wait a bit for quad-core. Dual core is gonna be left in the dust once quad-core comes out, and it's not that far away. Note that quad-core will greatly improve battery life, performance, and more since ICS has hardware acceleration optimized for it.
That being said, I wouldn't get a Galaxy Nexus either. Nexus phones are great, but that's only because they release the latest & greatest android version. To be honest, the galaxy nexus doesn't even stand a chance against the GS2, but it definitely kills an Evo 3D.
Hope this opened your choices up a bit, rather than to focus on an almost 6-month old phone
Keyboard is a double edged sword. I got the epic for my wife and I because she wanted a keyboard and this would be my first android phone so I wanted us to have the same. The keyboard itself is great as far as keyboards go but moving parts always break eventually. The evo would last much longer than the epic I am sure. If you get new phones regularly its no big deal but if you stick with one for a long time the candy bar format sans keyboard would be the most reliable.

Go to swappa.com to see the cheapest unlocked but used phones. I hear it works well.

get insurance on that beast and get it fixed!
Besides, most people leave the Epic for the Nexus S 4g, not the EVO.
I'd wait for the LTE phones if you already have an Epic.

I've been using the Epic since February, bought it because of the beautiful screen. I don't think I've used the slide out keyboard more than 3 times. It was nice to know I had it if I needed it but I'm now convinced I can do without one.
Eepppiiiiccccc!!!!!!!!!!! The evo sucks
Battery is terribleee
And its slower than this
And it doesn't have a cool widget button set in the notifications
And doesn't have a beautiful clear screen like this phone lol
And nooooo keyboardd so touch can get annoying sometimes especially when sometimes u get a drop of water on the screen (which winter is coming so be expecting a lot of rain) and in the cold the touch won't respond to ur frozen fingers lol
That's just what I think and I can give u a lot more reasons if u want
Like rooting the epic and having cwm and roms is easier on epic and u won't have all the amazing devs that u will have over here lol
This is all just my opinions

EVO 4g... my favorite device so far.

I must say this has been my favorite device to play around with that I have in my little arsenal of devices. I got this baby for free from a co-worker when she dropped it in a bowl of water. She was going to donate it and I immediately told her that I would take it. I sure am glad I did. To think about 2 years ago it came out with the specs it has was a breakthrough for Android devices and it still is a really strong almost unbreakable beast. I still use it on a daily basis to watch youtube videos via HDMI. Also the EVO 4g community is great with good peoples. I swear sometimes I think a noob is going be hanged when they ask a question but instead someone respectfully answers them. Great devs, great people, which will make me hold on to this device until this place becomes a ghost town which I don't think will happen anytime soon.
Please share any awesome experiences you guys have had with this device
This is the first and only smart phone I have owned. It has taken me to high levels of enjoyment and understanding. I have dived deep into Android and haven't been held back by my device.
I will say I am not happy with htc's recent trickery with their bootloaders but if they did a nexus device I would be right on it.

I still use my "decommissioned" EVO 4g daily to surf and watch netflix. It has become my "PDA." It is, however, tethered to my rooted 3devo which is running ICS and Sense 4.0 Marriage made in heaven.

this was my first android phone. i was a fan of android before i got it, and definitely knew that my next phone would be an android, so when it came out its specs made me drool. i've had a ton of smartphones since they started coming out. i had dell axims before smartphones, and this phone really is awesome. i mean, i think that pretty much any high end android phone is pretty awesome considering where we were only a few years ago before android was fully mainstream, back when your option was an iphone that couldn't copy and paste text, or a windows mobile phone that would crash when pasting. the one thing that really stands out with the evo for me is the build quality. its not *that* bad. indestructible? oh no... this phone breaks in weird places without even being dropped, like the usb port, power button, etc. but since my last htc product with the touch pro, i didn't trust htc with building anything decent. that phone broke in so many ways it was unimaginable. i was always thinking, what's going to fall off next? so, i've owned the evo for almost 2 years now, and well, i still own it. that says something.
I fell in love with it the second I had it in my hands. Android has been an absolute blast and I love that its continuously being updated and stuff. I have now moved on to the new HTC EVO 4G LTE and use my OG EVO as a tethering device for my computer

I'm not sure if I want to get my hands on the EVO LTE yet. I have been looking at the Galaxy note seems like a pretty neat device to play around with but I do want another slider. I am very partial to my slider devices
Be-careful about the tethering.... don't hit 100gigs a month.

I'm considering the Note as well. Just wondering if I will get bored with it. Been hard to get bored with my evo 4g since I can always flash a new and different rom. But the Note is tempting
This is the only phone I've owned that has kept my attention for the life of the contract.

It is really amazing, that 2 years later this phone still holds it's own. I still think it's a great looking phone, and with the abundance of ROMs available I have a hard time upgrading.
I agree with the post above, it's hard to consider upgrading when there is such a great dev community here. Thanks all!
I think that by having hdmi out for netflix makes the phone badass
My favorite phone too.

It will be sad to decommission this one... but excited about the SG3. Never gonna let it go though!!
