[Q] Why should i root my play?

i am pretty good with computers but i am a noob when it comes smartphones, the play is my first smartphone and it didnt take long for me to get bored so i started trying emulators out. Ive now got psx4droid, gameboid & other emulators on here running nice & smooth, But all i keep reading now is about rooting etc and started to feel like im missing out!
what do you really gain from rooting?
and how easy is it to brick a phone while rooting?

if you dont have a reason to root, really there is no need, root gives you r/w access to the /system/ and /data/ folders, it will let you theme you android, backup you apps and clean cache's that you normally couldnt, another good reason to root is for apps like "adfree android" this will remove ads from apps and website, making some free apps just as good as there payed brothers you can also use root to keep things like busybox updated

You can imagine rooting as using a computer with full administrator rights. It will allow apps to have access to system files we normally cannot access. This allows you to freeze or remove bloatware. Use overclocking software and backup software just to name a few.
It is pretty hard to brick a phone by rooting. Its if you unlock your bootloader and start playing with custom kernels and roms that you start playing a little more dangerous.

yea i heard that you can customise themes etc that would be cool, and yea i would be doin it for the adfree and isit set cpu app & titanium back up to make some more space

if your using 2.3.2 you can root using gingerbreak or gingersnap, but if you have 2.3.3, that cannot be rooted by normal means. and you have to unlock your bootloader and flash a rooted system image, if you unlock you bootloader, you will forfit any official support from sony

yea im on 2.3.3 i tryed gingerbreak 1.1 & 1.20 but they didnt work

If you delete something that isnt supposed to be(from sony preloaded s/w)...you mite end up bricking the play....if you delete useless stuff only you wont brick infact would gain speed and space on play...
I deleted the Timescape, Twitter stuff, sony wallpapers, android wallpapers and brucelee game and etc(dont remember now)
The fone worked fast and gave space....you could also move softwares from fone to sd card thru root too(one's which dont give option on unrooted device)
but always make a backup of everything, id say use titanium from market, its free, it would need super user and some other stuff...

You do lose the ability to update, however, I emailed sony when I encountered this problem, and they did advise me on how to get around it (at my own risk mind you), and now I have the latest firmware

I dont think xplay 3.0.A.2.181 fw was ever posted so unless someone can post it, it wont work. Maybe 3.0.A.2.181 was posted but i cannot remember seeing it

If the phone is SIM locked the bootloader is locked, so if you wanted to root it by unlocked the bootloader you would have no luck, If you're still on 2.3.2 the gingerbreak apk root method will work for you.
Rooting the phone won't have any affect on the carrier. Well I don't think so anyway.
Back on topic, I rooted my previous android phone as soon as I got it (a ZTE blade) it was a great phone fully featured and good value. With the root came custom roms, adfree apps, screenshot tools, remote access etc. Rooting the phone is great if you have an inner nerd and you want to tinker with the phone.
I'm rooting my xperia play soon.

No. Unless you unlock it yourself it will still be locked. Sim free just means your phone will take any sim card. Its not locked to 1 network (sim locked)

Best Rooting Method

So since as if we have already been abandoned by the Gingerbreak Project, what can you guys recommend to root my R800i without removing the ability to update the phone to higher Android in the coming months?
So you see I am really new to Android and I have little knowledge on unlocking bootloaders and the like that's why I stuck to Gingerbreak last month. Now that I have updated to 2.3.3, yeah everybody knows Gingerbreak no longer works.
I cannot consider reverting back to 2.3.2 since the 2.3.3 update really improved the battery performance and I'd still choose that over the ability to root on the 2.3.2. But then, bottom line is we really love our phones rooted.
So to cut the crap, anyone please recommend the best method to root the R800i (I would be open for tutorials) whilst preserving our ability to update to better versions in the future?

Ive not rooted or unlocked the boot loader yet myself as this is my first android device im taking it slowly but according to threads in the development section you can root and upgrade as long as you do nothing to the device before upgrading, root the phone then upgrade to 2.3.3
This means flashing backwards first obviously.
As far as upgrading in the future you will be better off flashing a custom rom if development goes well. Custom roms will take this device further than official updates will.

See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090. Follow the steps and you shall have root on 2.3.3 . I have also opted to "freeze" the bloat this time instead of just uninstalling it, in hopes that when 2.3.4 arrives i can do the ota update again and still keep root.
Also @ -josh- rooting will not damage your phone so its safe to root. I am also a first time android user myself but following the steps in the thread above worked fine no problems. And even if it didnt you can use SEUS to fix a phone with a locked bootloader

I rooted my phone when i was using 2.3.2 and found a good improvement.
Then i updated to an unrooted 2.3.3.
Ive left it unrooted for now. 2.3.3 performance is better than a rooted 2.3.2 i find.
It would be nice to root and remove the bloatwarw and overclock to 1.5 ghz, which can now be done. But for now i am happy.
Aside from a few Gameloft games not working, 2.3.3 is outstanding.
Not going to root until something major happens. Only reason i can see to root is to clock to 1.5 ghz to get n64oid working better.
Other than that, no point imo.

You can are not supposed to flash to 2.3.3.. You are supposed to flash your phone to 2.3.2 uk generic version. After root your phone and through your phone you go to settings /about/update software and upgrade it there without hooking it to the computer. Make sure that your bootloader is LOCKED, otherwise you brick your phone.

Anyway i can get them back without purchasing them again?

Use this to get to 2.3.3 unrooted. Everything will be put back to stock.

Unfortunately it didnt work for me. I only have one game in the list which was Asphalt 6.
Ive bought about half of them so there should be plenty more in the list but they are not there.
Ive emailed customer service. Not really that bothered if i get them back or not but i wanted to play Sacred Odessy again. It stopped working when i updated to 2.3.3.
Nevermind.

Don't email them. Call them. Email takes more then a week for each reply. Calling us 10 minutes wait

sheise. i've been on 2.3.3 unrooted for weeks now and i'm sick of the bloatware... flashing a 2.3.2 UK generic ROM via FlashTool gives back an error that's why i stuck to 2.3.3 unrooted..

It's better if you choose to erase personal files.. It's an option that you check off before flash. That being said, nothing on your sd card gets touched.

so everyone still uses FlashTool? it gives me back an error so i used WotanClient. Worked like a charm! I'm now on 2.3.3 UK Generic ROOTED! and works like anything else here in the philippines!

[Q] Best steps to get Rogers 2.3.3 and root?

I have a stock Rogers play and now that the OTA update is available was wondering what's the best way to get root and then update. I want to freeze delete most of the boat to speed it up a bit, while leaving the option to revert back to the rogers fw in the future.
Also I was wondering if anyone can recommend a sim unlocker, would be nice to use other providers when I'm not around home.
Sorry for the questions if they're pretty basic but this is my first smartphone and just starting to play around.

but as far as unlocking ur sim code, I did it last week from a website. really easy. u pay $20 and they give u a code. the code is needed when another simcard other than rogers is inserted.
I used this website: mobileincanada.com
there is cheaper ones i.e. $16 but I am not sure if they actually work or no. I tried this one and it works and they have a good customer service so its best if u try them. cheers

Wait, if the phone comes with boats, can I use it in the bath tub without a problem? That is an AWESOME feature, idk why you would wanna remove it.

My Xplay came from rogers canada also, but Im using it here in philippines, I unlocked it using cellphoneunlocker.net to have the unlock codes.. And they only charge it 8$..
It is originally 2.3.2 then i rooted it, deleted some bloatware, then when the 2.3.3 update comes out I used this instruction to have a 2.3.3 rooted Xplay http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090
But after update I fail to recover some apps, maybe because the backup app that i used is not titanium backup w/c is the advisabe one.. I didn't use that eventhough I have it is because i dunno how to used it to backup my files. Until now..
So i just install those app all over again..

After flashing you WILL lose ROOT!
There is a small tick box saying not to wipe data in flashtool , you can tick it
Factory data reset will not terminate bootloader or root

Depending on the firmware, gsm/cdma may not work properly, please wait for a global ftf or stick without placing calls or use data for web.

Edit :while totally ignorant of this post, another way to root is to downgrade to 2.3.2, install gingerbreak and do a software update from your phone. Remember never to delete any system apps as it will not update ever. Your bootloader must be locked aswell, if you wish to relock the boot loader go here

No need for a nandroid backup.
There's a simple way. When selecting the file for flashing in Flashtool, uncheck the Wipe user data button and all your data (apps, messages, contacts) will be retained.

Bringing up my post, if you make a forced flash with R800x you MAY have some side effects like market not downloading or making no calls
This is, of course untested, so I'm not sure.

One thing you might ad in your edit about downgrading/gingerbreak/upgrade to retain root on new builds, is that this method will only work if you have a LOCKED bootloader or else you'll brick your phone. Bin4ry has posted a solution for that, but afaik people still has some problems after using this and some don't and it only works if you haven't tried anything else before that to rescue/restore your phone. Maybe a link to blagus tutorial on how to lock your bootloader would fit in nicely aswell

Very limbo, it worked for me ONCE, but I went back to 2.3.3, and then back to 2.3.4. And then it stopped working. It's stuck on updating
I believe it can still work.. But no one apart from me ever said it worked once

If you want to know Anyhow, the fastboot files you had from unlocking bootloader,put the future doomkernel4 in there and if your using Vista/Win7/win8
Shift+Rightclick
and type this in:
fastboot flash boot X.img
X = the name of the doomkernel4 once it comes out

Go and use the Clockwork mod recovery you used to get Root,and instead of finding the rootxperia.zip ,find the bravida mod.zip
if you still dont understand how to the get the bravia mod working,replace the Rootzip with bravia mod in Step4

If 2.3.4 is availbile in your area (which i assume is no),then no way to do it without waiting for the Software update over the air.
I made a isolated post saying that you can relock your bootloader afterwards

New to android. Considering rooting

I'm relatively new to the Android wold (1 month) and I bought an Arc from my Carrier.
I'm kinda satisfied but I really dislike the way some applications can't be removed (I count something like 20 applications between the carrier and Sony Ericsson partners).
So, I'm considering rooting the phone, but there is a lot of informations I shall process before doing it and I am a little bit unsure about some facts, so I hope you would help me. Here's my questions:
Is it really a reasonable behavior to root the phone, just in order to remove a 20ish apps or would you think I'd have a better experience to just stick with it ?
I understood there was some problems with arcs under android 2.3.4, they seems to be solved, but I'm unsure which method I shall follow (I don't want to mess the bootloader nor the ROM, I just want root permissions). May you show me which way I shall go ?
On my linux computer, I won't login under root every time I would power it on. When the phone is rooted, does this means, I am always granted root access and I shall be aware of what I'm doing or can I choose to get root privileges only when I need them ?
If I root the phone without changing the bootloader, would I be able to update the phone along Sony Ericsson releases ? (OTA only ?)

If the crapware is using up space you need, then that's a pretty good reason to get rid IMO. If SE had left us with a bit more free space it might not be such an issue. Also, root lets you do lots of cool things with your phone that you cant do otherwise.

If you have 2.3.4 then the best bet seems to be the zergRush method detailed here. Havent tried it yet myself, but planning to soon.

Dont think of rooting as giving *you* superuser access, think of it more as allowing you to choose which *apps* have superuser access. Apps with superuser access can do things normal apps cant. Think of the apps as the users of the system - you're just interacting with normal or privileged apps.
When you root, a superuser access app gets installed. Then whenever a non-system app requests su permissions, the superuser app will ask you whether to allow or deny those permissions (you can allow the app permanently or have it ask every time).
If I root the phone without changing the bootloader, would I be able to update the phone along Sony Ericsson releases ? (OTA only ?)

Yup you will still be able update via OTA or via SEUS. Updating via SEUS will remove root, but so far OTA updates have maintained root (no guarantee this will continue in the future though).

don't delete just freeze
i advice not to delete the apps that comes with the phone cuz you will not gain extra memory so if there any app that bother you just freeze it and it will be removed from the app drower and it will not work again but when you feel you want them back unfreeze it

I'm sorry, it's true I've posted a bit fast. Yet, I didn't found the sticky talking about freezing apps, but I found out I have to root the phone, even if I only wish to freeze the apps.
Now I know I'll have to root the device (the bloatwares are starting to annoy me a great deal) should I uninstall or freeze the carrier apps.

Apps such as Titanium Backup allows you to either uninstall or freeze a system app. Freezing the app just disables it while uninstalling will completely remove it from the phone.
