'My Data Manager' top item 'Media Storage' - Legend General

I've been running the app 'My Data Manager' to see what's using up my data on 3g. Everything is really low, not worried at all from apps you'd expect like twitter, email, internet. However the top by some margin, though still only a few mb really, is 'Media Storage'.
I'm not sure what this is and why its sending data to the internet over 3G. Does anyone know ? All I've done today is a few SMS, read twitter and looked at a few internet pages e.g BBC News and Amazon.

Nexus one keep chew up my data.

Hi, I am new to Android and just bought Nexus one.
I like every features of the phone. However, I switched off Autosync with google account and turned off even background data. Lastly I killed all of the background running apps except 3G watchdog (to check 3G usage).
And this F nexus one still downloading some data!! its downloaded like 200kb for an hour. Last week it chewed up 50MB on a day when I used data for an OTA update which was around 15MB.
I had an iPhone 3G and 3GS before, but I used iphone with push notification on and never had problem with data usage.
Why my nexus one is keep chew up my data? Am I doing something wrong?
I am sad that I need to run gmail app to see if I received new email.
PS. Last 3 days, I used data for like 5min per day and it chewed up 30MB per day. -_- Root the phone and flash with custom rom could help me out please!

Is there any other way other than just blocking 3G connection? I wish I could just use internet when I need it and download only what I used. little over is ok, but 20MB per day for nothing is not alright for me.. sigh..

hmm I guess you can just use the toggle data widget and turn the data off when you are not using it, when you want to however just tap the widget and it'll turn back on for you. Is that what your looking for?
Can I ask why it is you wish to do this? Do you pay per MB?
I can understand the latter, however there is a great deal to switch off if you want to stop the phone from syncing everything.
try these
* Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks, uncheck 'Data roaming'
* Settings -> Location & security, uncheck 'Use wireless networks'
* Settings -> Applications -> Running services, stopped all except Adriod keyboard & Live Wallpaper
* Settings -> Accounts & sync, uncheck 'Background data' and Synch is off for the accounts I have (facebook & gmail)
* Settings -> Privacy, uncheck 'Use My Location'
* Facebook -> Settings, 'Refresh interval' set to "Never". 'Notifications' set to "Inactive"
* Gmail -> Settings, 'Email notifications' set to "Never"
* Email -> Account Settings, 'Email check frequency' set to "Never"

Thank you! I will try this setting and how it goes. Is there push-notification like iphone? push-notification seemed work great with using tiny amount of data.
By the way, I live in AUS and I have 250MB per month to use. If I use more than 250MB, I need to pay extra money for data usage.

I just do not understand why Nexus one is chewing my data while its just sitting in my pocket, when iPhone did not. Imagine 10MB per day is equal to 300MB per month. I saw someone used 3weeks with 7MB download, which is understandable. Why mine doesn't..
A simple method without rooting or any other application would be:
1. Dialpad *#*#4636#*#*
2. Phone information
3. Menu
4. More
5. Disable Data Connection or Disable Data on Boot
There you go. You can enable it same way . Choose first option from 5. if you want to re-enable it without a reboot.
Ran into this problem, too. Slapped APNdroid on it since to toggle data connections, which works great except the app can be a little glitchy.

I downloaded APNdroid as well, but it blocks 3G phone as well. I assume that it also toggle phone connectivity.
I think it's hilarious that you're getting so upset because your SMARTPHONE uses DATA. 250mb for a month isn't nearly enough. Do yourself a favor and get 1gb at least... and enjoy your phone!

Well, 250mb for you maybe not enough. But I used it kind of enougly with iPhone. Also, it chewed up for no reason? I did not get any benefits with the usage. I wouldnt be upset if the data that spent by nexus one was beneficial for me. It's just leaking and I wanna know why is it leaking.

man, really..
my phone is on 24/7. all day with 3G, evening with wifi.
at the end of the day i never am above 5-6 MB of data transferred in total.
Im not sure what you've installed but its not the default experience.

I'd argue there is reason. The major focus point of the phone is so that you can receive your data on the go. I get my email, weather, news, IM, sports scores, twitter updates, etc, etc... instantly and automatically. Not only that, but my phone backs up my settings, and contacts automatically so I don't have to even think about anything when I wipe my phone to reflash a new rom.
Frankly without all that, there's not much point to the phone. You might as well just check those things from a full scale computer, and just carry a dumb phone.
Really can't see why you'd want to limit the data usage of a N1 (or any other 'smart phone'). It's completely useless without a data connection!
That said, it really shouldn't use much if you aren't doing anything with it. I only use 400Mb ish a month with plenty of use including mail/calendar etc sync all the time, plenty of web browsing, google maps, podcasts and streaming music for last fm.
Maybe you have something installed that's doing something in the background (like your data monitor!?).
I have to agree with the OP; There are cases where one would want to not get constant updates/have constant data usage, e.g. if you travel a lot (internationally), or if you're on a low budget for a period, or if you just don't have the subscription to cover it yet.

Well, I would not start this thread if my nexus one transferes data like yours. Also whatever app I've installed, I killed all of them and still chewing up data. I know this is not the default expereice, so I wrote my exprience to see if anyone else is having similar problem and to find answers from other nexus one users who spent more time with the phone than me.

When my nexus one had setting like your nexus one (first day I received), it chewed up 70mb on that day. I would be happy if my N1 uses the data like yours.
(This is for everyone who read this thread)
By the way, why the hell people replies with their opinion about the data plan for N1? I wrote this on the other forum and I am getting completely different answers. I did not started this thread to ask how much data plan do I need for N1. Why is everyone is just saying get a more data usage plan, smartphone needs a huge data plan. Well, N1 is not my first smartphone and I know I need bigger data plan one day. But before I get a bigger data plan, I want to find out why my N1 is using more data than other users
does it have to do with the rom ur using?
maybe weather update plugin or something random like that?
why dont u try flashing it to the stock rom with no apps installed and give it a try?

strange internet conenction

if i use the facebook app, twitter or email my internet connection is fine.
If i try to use other apps like browser, ebay app etc i get no connection to the net, just waits and waits and then times out.
have i missed something in the settings?
anyone please?

[Q] Application to show network usage per apllication

Hi! I'd like to now whether it's possible to check which application is using the network, and how much it uses it. I've heard that in "Spare parts" selecting "Battery history > Network usage" you can check this, but on Samsung Galaxy S it only says that the data is not available. If there is no such app is there a ROM that enables this data?
I've had the exactly the same problem! Would be grateful for any ideas or apps to determine what is downloading data
i'm using 3G watchdog
best app so far that tells me my usage
I don't think 3G Watchdog tells you what app is actually using it though.
OffTopic: AllGamer your droptest video made me cringe :/

But it does not show usage per application. There appears to be no app that can do this
Edit: The Battery history menu can show network usage on the Froyo JPC firmware. Use the SGS info app, can be found free on this forum or as a purchase on the Market.
Or dial *#*#4636#*#*
It doesn't look right though, Just a blue are red bar for each app, including the Dialer, an app called "0" which has the highest usage here, and "1010". No number to go with the bar.

at least you can sleep well knowing our phone can stand all those abuses and still lives
unless you drop the phone from over 1.5 meter tall
I'd really like this too. Definitely want to know where all my data is going.....
well if you think of it, you are only doing these as the very basic:
1. email (text)
2. web (text & video streams)
3. calendar sync (text)
4. contact sync (text)
5. facebook sync (text)
6. tweeter sync (text)
7. IM and/or (text)
less conventional data usage
8. Fring <------- video uses more
9. internet radio stream <--- high data usage as well, but less than video
10. FTP server (depends on usage)
11. Torrent (depends on usage)
12. Remote Desktop / VNC <--- medium data usage
so in the end, there is no way you do not know where you are using losing your data to
That is mostly true - but sometimes you have mystery usage.
Today, for instance, i got ticked off, and disabled background sync entirely. I already have my emails only polling every hour, and weather every 6 hours. (with background sync off, it shouldnt even poll at ALL.) I don't have any facebook/twitter stuff, and didnt even go near the web browser. The phone somehow STILL used over 10mb of data in about 5 hours. I dont know what is using this data, and its annoying me.
Thus the continued request to find a program that will show usage PER APP.
I have the same issue
Same problem here, its only been 3 days and i already have 100mb of data usage. I've downloaded some apps but not enough to give me 100mb of data! This is realy weird and frustrating.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Well, i have discovered that such a program does indeed exist.
BUT - it only works with froyo. BOOOOO!
I have the page bookmarked for when i get it though!
Here it is: TrafficStats
Nice, now all my Galaxy S needs is Froyo...
i'm so looking forward to froyo
2 more week to go
i too want to install that Traffic tracking App

[Q] Data Usage ???

I have the 200mb plan because I rarely need internet when I am in my car or out somewhere (I am just forced to sign up for a data plan obviously).
I was wondering what uses the most data from my apps? Is it the GPS(if I use it for getting directions) Is it e-mail?
I've just looked up my data usage and I have 7mb taken out of my 200mb on 12/31. I remember I was out with my wife and checked my e-mail and refreshed tweetdeck. I can't imagine that would suck 7MBs of data, would it?

Google maps would use alot of data since its downloading the map data and directions. 7 megs a day is easy to get to considering when you are syncing up to email, maps, and market.
When it checks for email, even if there is no new email, data is still used. The phone sends out a request to the email server asking if there is any new email. If nothing new is there, nothing else is downloaded. But there was still data sent over the internet to find out. Going into the market, it has to download icons, app descriptions, review info. Go onto a web page, all the content of that web page is downloaded like html, css, images, javascript, just to name some.

Certain apps can't access internet with mobile data while others can't. Wifi works.

Hi There,
So today i am experiencing the strangest thing. I have not touched any settings anywhere that i know of but all of a sudden:
Mainly google apps (Gmail, Drive, YouTube, Play Store, Hangouts, a Google search within Samsung Internet Browser, Google login to Flipboard function) do not get an internet connection via Mobile Data on my phone
Other apps like Dropbox, Facebook, Facebook Messanger, Internet pages in the Samsung Browser, etc) load just fine as allways
Connecting to my wifi network all the apps from point 1 load without an issue just as any other as well
I am not at my mobile data cap.
I have not touched any sort of mobile data restriction setting or any other system setting recently that could've caused this.
So what in the blue hell can cause this and how do i fix it? (Don't want to hear about doing a full phone reset because that is not something i wish to do)
Cheers
