I don't know what is it, or how they do it, but first I wanna know why they do it. All I heard is root! root! root!
get to know it
Do not root update install 3rd party apps until you know honeycomb and android
Of course root is obviously needed it also puts system files in your hands to mess up.
Please be careful and read all the forums and threads here
Thanks for hearing my 2 cents
If you dont know why you most likely do not need to do so yet
There are a great bunch of people here .take your time and do not jumpinto to deep
If you're not going to root, obviously the first thing is to set your tablet up with your Google account (either an existing GMail account or a new one.) Then set up any other email accounts, and install any apps you know you want that aren't on the tablet already (Kindle/Nook, games, utilities, TweetDeck, Pandora, MoboPlayer, etc.)
Find yourself a good File Manager; Android doesn't come by default with a program to let you view the files on your tablet :| I personally use ES File Explorer, but HD File Manager is also pretty good and was designed for Honeycomb/tablet size displays.
As Erica said above, don't even consider rooting until you've worked with Android a bit. If you don't need the tools root provides, you're better off not doing it.
Rooting your tablet (or other Android device) installs a "SuperUser" application which can allow other apps to act as the owner of the operating system (for Windows user, Administrator level privileges rather than User). In most cases, the method of getting root involves using a device- or Android-version-specific exploit/security hole.
With Root/SU, you can:
Run root-only apps like Titanium Backup, SetCPU (profiles only currently)
Remove and/or replace apps and other files not normally in the "user" space (CAUTION: Acer's update process expects damned near all of the pre-installed apps to still be there, so ALWAYS back up the original files!)
Once the hard-working and never-appreciated-enough Devs figure out a way around the bootloader (or Acer unlocks it), you can replace the kernel files, overclock, replace the entire ROM with a custom one
Some caveats:
Rooting will almost certainly void your warranty (if discovered should you have to return it for warranty service) and if you do it wrong, you can brick your device (i.e. you now have a flat black brick, not a functional device)
Some apps will not work on devices that are rooted (and/or have the SuperUser app present). Currently this includes at a minimum Google Movies and Blockbuster.
DON'T waste you time trying to update. It's been pulled until release fo HC 3.1.
DO enjoy the unit!
DO download apps and play.
Root at your own risk, but HC 3.1 is around the corner and you will have a dificult time getting it if you don't know what your not a techie.
Lastly, put it in Airplane mode before sleep mode to save battery. If you are turning it off, no dif.
Get Astro file mgr - free
Get Weatherbug for HC - free
Get Pandora - free
Load a micro mem card with all you music and videos, and enjoy one of the best devices in production.
If you have a memory card reader, blow you Ipad friends minds by asking them to borrow the memory card in their digital camera, plug it into the USB and swipe through their pictures. They don't have an app for that.
I have had my A500 since last week. I have basically just been trying out apps and browsing Forums to get more info. In the end the forum here seems to be most active and contains the most interesting information.
Also try to google for list with "Optimized for Honeycomb". This will make you fiind the apps that are optimized for the Tablet.
I did not root my device as I dont have any need for it (yet), but I am certainly waiting for 3.1. The current version of honeycomb is a bit unstable.
For the rest just enjoy the tablet
Smile, you just bought a great tablet
So what are you guys saying is that I should not update my build version, and wait for the 3.1 update
Of course first have to buy a screen protector before remove the plastic cover. Apply the screen protector before it get dusted. Then only turn on the device, sign in your Google account and connect internet and do setting. Then go update the firmware.

Correct, unless you know what you are doing.
my EVO was rooted until the last ota. That was great but what benefit is there for my tablet ? My phone could wifi and I could get rid of ads but what extra can my tablet do when rooted.
Main reasons I rooted my tablet was so I could watch netflix on my tablet and so I can hook up my 500gb hdd and access all my movies and pictures on my tablet.
I've been looking at installing a custom rom but still content right now with being stock rooted. I'm sure I'll break into it soon but for now those are 2 big reasons I rooted. Not to mention its rediculously easy to do so, so its like why not lol

how are you running Netflix? I am rooted and Netflix will not stream on my Iconia.
Reasons to root a500.
1. Able to edit the 'wpa_supplicant' file in system/bin to get the a500 to connect to my ad hoc network.
2. Able to edit the 'libnvomx.so' file in system/lib to get Netflix working.
3. Able to use any program that needs Superuser permissions.

Didn't 3.2 add native USB host support? If that is the case, you won't need to root to access your hard drive once they release the 3.2 update.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not about the hard drive (my FAT32 drives work just fine). It's about NTFS filesystem which is not supported out of the box hence the rooting.
So to make it short... I doubt that we'll see any change on this front.
Rooting allows you to use apps like AddFree Android. It kills in-add apps
Hi I am new to the world of acers and the iconia as I previously used all apple products. I have heard about rooting your device but there were a few things I wanted to know before I do so. Firstly is it difficult to do so? Is there much risk involved for example could I possibly ruin the device if I do something wrong? and the other thing I wanted to know about rooting a device is what are the pros and cons of doing so?
Thank you in advance for your contribution.
Welcome to the Android world. Addressing your questions:
Firstly is it difficult to do so? no, you just browse on this forum for the iconiaroot file. It is as easy as run the app, wait a few minutes (reboot included), and done, you are rooted.
Is there much risk involved for example could I possibly ruin the device if I do something wrong? I don't think so, never heard of anybody bricking their a500 just by rooting it (I could be wrong, but chances are low).
and the other thing I wanted to know about rooting a device is what are the pros and cons of doing so? you can have more control over the OS and do some modding that would not be able without root, for instance NTFS support (you are no longer limited to the 4GB file of FAT format), on the cons, Acer might not like it and would refuse to apply the warranty, but you can always unroot, leaving no traces so they won't know (basically I think there are no cons)
First off rooting your tablet only means you have changed the level of your user access to root. This alone won't cause a device to become bricked. It only allows you the user access to files that if changed without caution can brick a device. Like they say "guns don't kill people, people kill people". Translation "rooting doesn't brick tablets people brick tablets". The process is safe and won't hurt the device. The reasons for keeping users from this sort of access is for the manufacturer to protect themselves from an endless supply of returned goods that are broken from user error.
As for gains you'll be suprised at the customization available especially compared to apple products. Go slow and learn.
sent from the drivers seat, yup texting while driving
Netflix! You can patch your tab so that the apps finally work
You can also get SetCpu which can save you battery life.
you can use drivemount to mount drives that are not FAT32 formated (NTFS)
you also can change your wifi so it allows you to access ad-hoc wifi networks.
or you can use adblock to block ads on your device.
you can install a custom recovery and do backups and install custom roms...
i definately would root it!
I agree
There is no danger in rooting your device - nor is any technical skill required, it is literally as easy as changing one check box in settings, downloading a program and clicking "root". This opens the door to do lots of fun things with your Iconia. Unrooting the device in case you wanted to return it is also just as easy, click one button and you are set.
As other posters have pointed out - having root access cannot brick your device in itself. Having root access and using it to modify a part of the system and not doing it right can result in a unbootable tab.
Welcome to the world of Android and grants on your new Iconia. There are plenty of great things you can do after gaining root, just remember to take things one step at a time and ask questions if you are unsure *before* proceeding with any modification of your tablet.
In my experience, I was rather new with Android when I got my Iconia as well. Just take it slow, and when in doubt read the instructions once more and ask questions

+1 to that - Netflix was the only reason I rooted.
Pro: Netflix
Con: you shouldn't need root access just to access netflix
This is for all the developers out there. Let's see if anyone out there has the talent to get this done. I will pay money for something like this to a developer as well. Here is the goal:
To set up a platform on smartphones that basically comes with two separate partitions. Ideally what would be better would for manufacturers to manufacture a smartphone with two separate flash drives. Say a for a 32gb device they would use two 16gb flash drives and for a 64gb device they would use two 32 gb flash drives. The main objective here is security and privacy from all these invasion of privacy that all these applications on Google Play store require. Usually they require access to your call logs, pictures, files, memory card,SMS messages, contacts list/s,notes,calendars,videos,audio,etc...
What would be nice is for one to have an option to say download an application like Facebook which pretty much requires every permission you can think of to be downloaded on a separate flash drive to where it has pretty much access to nothing except for what you choose to install on that flash drive or that partition. Wechat recently pulled a dirty trick in one of its updates to where one can not completely uninstall the application after installing it on a HTC smartphone.
Would like to have a secure and safe partition or separate flash drive preferably that would allow one to input contacts, photos,SMS messages, notes, calendars, call logs,etc.. That no application could have access to for our own privacy and safety along with security. Something like how one can ru two separate systems on a MacBook computer to where Windows can also run using Paralles?
Any geniuses here no how to do this or get this done?
This doesn't require a genius... This requires resources lol! Nobody can do it other than a manufacturer at all.
1. For 2 seperate NAND chips we would need to recreate it's PCB board, reconnect the ICs and chipsets which can't be done by household tools or by human hands
2. That would require full customization of the filesystem of android which would probably then be blocked by google because it won't follow their convention. Ask Madame Dianne Hackborn regarding this

Yes but when you do that, any Windows app or Mac app can still access anything on both partitions. How is that more secure? You cannot tell android to give app permission to photos on Partition1 but not to Partition2.
I suppose you could have 3 partitions, one that boots and lets you choose which of the other 2 to mount. Who is going to reboot their phone every time they want to switch between E-Mail and FaceBook though? ...if that's what you want, you can just use CWM and restore whichever backup you like, though that will take about 4-min of shutdown/restore/reboot everytime you switch.
What if you use users like in many 4.2.2 Roms. If you want an APP installed with to many access switch to a guest user

Yes this should be a great solution for dodgy apps. That way they won't have any access to the data located in another users account.

I guess it would basically be a virtual machine. There has to be a way to where one can separate things like two hard drives where in this case it would be on flash drives. Blackberry released something similar recently on their new OS.
Would be nice to be able to download all the basic applications which these days come with ridiculous permissions of which have access to everything on your smartphone. At times one does not wish to share their call log with Facebook or Whatsapp or Line Naver. One also may not to share their private SMS messages with those applications.
If we could choose where we want things installed it would be great.

What if the smartphone came with Operating Systems then on each Flash to where each was separate but you could switch back and forth between each like you can on a Macbook running Paralles. Being on separate Flash drives insures that one can get info from the other.
Seems like these days there is no way of blocking permissions without the application failing to load or run.
I have an HTC One and have Wechat on there. The other day I tried uninstalling it but I was unable to uninstall it as Wechat removed the uninstall option and gave us a downgrade option which leaves Wechat running. You can disable it though. Not sure how Google Play allows for such applications to be put up on Google Play that does not allow the user the ability to uninstall completely if they wanted to uninstall. This is why it would be nice to have a safety or dummy flash drive to separate private info and public info on a smartphone.
Again, what does choosing where something is installed have anything to do with permissions? Even if you swapped SD-Cards, then apps on one couldn't access apps on the other, but both could access everything on the system partition. The only way storing things in 2 different locations adds security, is if you can fully unmount all other locations, which would always require a reboot. Even a virtual-machine running on my PC can still access my PC and all of my network, and my PC along with all of the network can access the VM.
I don't think what you are trying to do (have 2 isolated drives) has anything to do with the goal of security. I don't think the actual security solution (having 2 isolated operating systems and needing to reboot to switch with no cross-access) is anything most people would want to deal with.
I think your best solution is to buy 2 phones.

Hi guys,
I am facing a lot of difficulty in trying to mount a samba share on the shield TV (16gb model).
It's freshly rooted with busybox, supersu, se linux mode and patched cifs manager.
No matter how I try to mount it, via terminal or via the patched CIFSManager, I always get an error saying "cannot access a needed shared library".
su --mount-master -c busybox mount -o username=shaf,password=android,rw,noperm,iocharset=utf8 -t cifs //192.168.1.1/android /data/media/0/android
The network folder is perfectly accessible through ES File explorer & I've even tried formatting the network drive as ext4.
I have checked in proc/ and the cifs files are there but I'm not sure if I need to load a cifs.ko kernel module, I assumed it was loaded.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me out here and point me in the right direction.

hey guys. im not much on networking. trying to figure it all out myself, but i found this app awhile back called servers ultimate pro.

they do have a 7 day trial to test things out but through this app i was able to create a smb/cifs server with windows 10 being able to map it as a network drive. At least on windows 10, i had to google and eventually found a few registry tweaks to make windows actually see it.
Currently my issue now is speed transfer isnt all that fast. its usable for my needs, but i average about 5-10MBps during transfer with an external usb 3.0 HDD plugged into the shield tv, transferring files over the network between my windows 10 machine. That is an issue im currently working on fixing, but i was at least able to create a working server with this app. The authors have a forum on xda as well but its looking more and more that it might become abandoned (servers ultimate pro) as the author(s) havent been responding to forum questions or even emails.
either way, just thought id let you guys know.

Ive actually tried that one amongst others, was one of the best tested at the time, even had, if i recall correctly, tasker support which is a must, but my shield for all intense and purposes, will be free of the google eco system, hence why i wont/cant have apps that require license check.......i dont like the artificial dependancy on other apps/services such as google services
On the lookout, hopefully, for an open source alternative with good tasker support.

Hey thanks buddy,
I think I had a look at that before but ignored it temporarily as I wanted to fix mounting samba shares first thereafter focus on making a script so it mounts automatically on boot but I don't see a problem with skipping straight to using the script.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to check/test the firetv script until next weekend, what problem do you have when trying to use the script?
I'm tempted to install the full android version with a tv style home launcher and check if I can connect to samba shares as this is driving me nuts lol.
Check out the thread 'nVidia Shield Android TV - Post your home screen' and see andrewthecoder's post, need to ask him if he's able to mount remote samba shares.
BTW guys, I think there's some confusion, my intention is to use the shield tv as a client, not to host a samba server lol.

Theres another potential, i stress, potential avenue to mount local filesystems beyond jellybean...sshfs
Easysshfs

https://bitbucket.org/bobrofon/easysshfs
Ive attempted to test this, sshelper server on the shield, easysshfs on the tablet with no success.......im thinking theres kernel modules involved( fuse.ko) , mind you im no expert. (Easysshfs logs makes mention of "fuse.sshfs is not in proc/mounts")
If modules are indeed involved then this is not an ideal solution (unless kernel moduling becomes universally compatible somehow), as i'd prefer any future purchases of stock android to have the ability natively, minimum, instead of waiting and hoping someone can release a solution
Sshelper

Edit
Well holy moly, i got it working, i just randomly decided to put admin as username instead of leaving it blank and hey presto....mounted.........quickly tested a file manager without network support, opensource "amaze", to browse and play a video on my tab from a usb stick on my shield........excellent
So for those interested, a simple two app install plus configuring (username, pass, mount to, mount from) and you have network mounting.....on lollipop.........excellent

Have you gotten this to work? I had it working on a previous OpenELEC box and an Xbian box, but I can't get it working on KODI on the Shield.

Yes I am sharing a "server of sorts" (Desktop in den with video and audio files stored) with multiple setups .
Shield with Kodi
Laptop with Kodi
Laptop with VLC
Samsung Tablets with Kodi or VLC
Sharing permissions need to be set to allow "Everyone" read/write access on server
I use a "MOVIE" folder, a "TV SHOW" folder, and a "MUSIC" folder then add source under files in KODI,select scraper for tv,movie,or music and it will also add covers and details to list. Kodi will detect files and add a MOVIE ,TV SHOWS, and MUSIC tab on home screen after scanning. I also set "scan on startup" " in systems settings so I only need to reboot to update libraries.
https://kodi.tv/ use wiki if you get lost
Hope this helps

It appears you are sharing your media from a server to the Shield. I am trying to use my Shield with Kodi as the server. I have an external drive attached by USB to the Shield and need to connect two other computers to it. I did this previously with OpenELEC and Xbian, but I can't get them to recognize the Shield/Kodi on the network like I'm used to. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!
I should probably mention that I am not rooted and would like to not root my Shield so I can get further updates rolled out by NVidia. That's kind of the problem.
I'm trying to run a Samba server on the NVidia Shield without root that has read/write access to external storage (external hard drive).
So far, I've been able to get FTP servers running on it, but nothing allows access to my external storage. I'd much prefer SMB to FTP though.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
AFAIK it is not possible to run a Samba server on Android without root since SMB uses port numbers < 1024.
Rather than attach my external drive directly to the NVidia Shield, I attached it to the router and have all my computers (Linux and Windows boxes) and the Shield connect to the shared drive and all folders. That works great!

hey guys. im not much on networking. trying to figure it all out myself, but i found this app awhile back called servers ultimate pro.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.serversultimatepro
they do have a 7 day trial to test things out but through this app i was able to create a smb/cifs server with windows 10 being able to map it as a network drive.

Does this app need root access? I saw this app yesterday and was going to try it.
