See you guys around - XPERIA X10 General

Most of you hadn't even noticed that I was in this forum. I've been around for 6 months more or less. When I first got here I didn't even know what rooting was and I ended up being an addicted to Wolfbreak's updates.
I renewed my plan today and got a LG Optimus Black for free and I'm gonna give it a try. Out of the box it looks more responsive and snappier the my beloved x10 so I'm gonna try and root it, but I'll keep an eye on this forum waiting for the gingerbread update and the successive custom roms.
I just wanted to thank all the devs here, WB, Z, goro, Ricardo and all of them, you guys have really given life to an forsaken device and it was a lot of fun and learning, I really appreciate the effort you make.
Thank you guys and take care

Here i have made you a cake.

I know I haven't really done much for this community, but still I'm gonna hijack this thread to bid my farewell too. It's been a fun, and certainly a thrilling first experience with Android, or any smartphone for that matter. I've been around since we first gained root access, created a huge thread in anticipation for 2.1, saw the first custom roms, demanded multitouch, gained multitouch, demanded Android Gingerbread, gained a promise for update to Gingerbread, achieved kernel bypass and more. So, I've seen the whole lifecycle of our X10, yet I'm leaving just when it's going to get a new breath of life. I'll probably be lurking around this part of the XDA too though, since I'm donating my X10 to my mom after I receive my SGSII.
Thanks to zdzihu, jerpelea, Wolfbreak, achotjan, DooMLoRD, erickwill, My_Immortal and everyone else whose actions and efforts have made this phone better than it was set out to be. I love you all and hope to see you guys again sometime. I hope the community is as good in the other camp as it was here in it's prime.

^ just hopefully less arguments than here. . Enjoy ur new phone

It's the top selling android phone ever, the development over there will be insane!
I envy you

Don't worry bros I have an inspire now and I hang around the x10 forums much more than the inspire forum. Of course I gave my dad my x10 so I still check for updates for him. Once you join the x10 family, you are always part of it!

Give us more impressions about the new phone
I'm not a fan of specific phones (maybe 1 week before I buy a new one, and few days after) so I'm curious about LG.

I'll probably add my experiences to DooMLord's thread tomorrow or in the weekend. I might even make a comparison video if I have time.

Its been a few days with the Optimus Black now. First thing you notice s the screen. I read reviews saying that it is a middle point between a normal LCD screen and the retina display but I compared it yesterday for quite a few minutes with it and I really think they are closer. Compared it yesterday with x10's screen and there's no comparison. The phone is responsive and I have seen little to no lag so far. I cannot talk about the LG optimus interface that much cause I jumped to the launcher pro plus right away. I'm loving the front facing camera.
Yesterday comparison with our beloved x10 made me have even more respect for our devs.... My x10 with Wolf's TW 8.1 and goro's custom kernel feels almost as snappy as the Optimus Black, the screen does make a big difference though.
Quadrant score with the Black: 1300-1450. Rooted and with blootware deleted. The phone is barely new so the dev section is still in diapers, hope it gets better.

I already posted this into DooMLord's thread, but since I promised I'll post this here too:
Okay, it's my turn to give some first impressions:
Holy shiet it's thin! A lot thinner than I expected it to be, considering that I thought the X10 was thin already. Also, holy shiet the screen! Simply put, it's gorgeus. The X10's screen just holds no candle to it.
The second thing that hit me was that it's LAG FREE. Like, completely, utterly lag free. When you're used to your phone lagging in every single operation from scrolling down the menus to watching a video, this feels almost unreal. Only thing I don't like at the moment is the icon style Samsung opted to use. It looks cheap and stuff. This phone coupled with the UI style from Sony would be _awesome_.
The all-plastic build doesn't bother me since the X10 is all-plastic too. Also I really like how light it is, especially compared to the X10, and the texture they used in the back cover provides nice grip.
These are of course first impressions, and to be fair I was extremely frustrated by my X10 which gives the SGSII an unfair bias. I'll probably do a more thorough "review" after I've gotten used to the device and probably after the X10 has received it's gingerbread treating just to be fair.
Without root and all the stock apps installed I got 3340 from Quadrant Standard.

The gpu in the arc is the adreno 205 the x10 uses the adreno 200.
I got rid of my lags on my x10 long ago.
But the sgs has that mali400 GPU.. hmmm.
but i'm personally awaiting the tegra2 based unit.

What I've noticed is that the term "lag" is completely subjective. I used my X10 with the latest custom kernel and it still didn't feel as fluid as I would've hoped it to feel. A lot better than without it for sure though. But the point is, what's lagless to you might be laggy to me and vise versa.
The Exynos chipset is better than the Tegra 2 in overall performance, but I believe that the Mali GPU has some flaws like the forced bit depth etc. so if you're really into gaming then go for the Tegra 2 version.

G1 Successors..

So I have been casually been browsing around off and on for the past few months for a rocking follow up phone to the G1.. Don't get me wrong- I absolutely love my G1. Ask anyone who knows me, I love it and it loves me. Nothing like owning the original android, and plus its a stellar phone. I looove the keyboard, there isnt another like it other there. It's just I havent been able to settle on a great daily ROM that is extremely stable, with good battery life and is snappy.
So I thought I would share my findings in my conquests to find some phones that us G1 fanatics could buy once we decide to put down our heavenly G1's.
1. Obviously first off there is the "G2". A great phone I might actually get once I finally part ways with the G1.
I was browsing Tmobile's site today and found another sweet quasi-G1 phone that are yet to release!
2. The Tmobile Sidekick 4G looks like it might be the first sidekick whose execution follows through on a cool phone concept. The keyboard looks very spacious and much like the G1 and plus its got the whole flip screen idea which seems kinda neat to me.. http://sidekick.t-mobile.com/
Feel free everyone to add any comments or any other phones that you think might fulfill a g1 user's dreams for the a future phone..
It looks like G2 is a name used for different phones. Can you link a picture?
I think a good successor may be the HTC Vision, http://www.newphones.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/HTC-Vision-phone.jpg
Desire Z would be the real successor.

Dang, that HTC Vision does indeed look pretty slick. The keyboard looks like and spacey; I hate the keyboards that are cramped..
Here is an image of the HTC/Tmobile G2. And official Site here Great Review of it Here; I think it looks amazing!!

Hot dang, that Desire Z does look super sick!! Here is a link: http://www.htc.com/www/product/desirez/overview.html
In fact in just briefly look over it, I cant figure out how it is different from the G2- perhaps newer?

It is not different except slightly with regard to the software on it. Also the compatible frequency set. If you're reading these forums, then the software it ships with doesn't matter to you to begin with.
BOTH are HTC VISION -- that is the real name of the hardware.
That samsung "sidekick" thing looks very similar in spec to the VISION. A couple of things to be aware of... samsung is known for poor quality "feel" (i.e., they feel cheap and plasticy), has had SEVERE problems with things like GPS.
Given the similarities in specs, you KNOW that the HTC VISION has been totally owned (you can take a brand new one from tmobile and run "gfree" on it and it instantly becomes full hardware and radio unlocked). The samsung is still an unknown quantity and a risk. Go with what is known. The VISION is an excellent phone and a worthy successor to the DREAM.
Note: I see that your carrier is ATT... you would be better off buying one from BELL CANADA than from tmobile because of frequency selection.
I thought the Tmobile G2 was the successor to the Tmobile G1. No debate? Lol

haha, yea I guess 'officially' you are right..
dhkr: Yea I was reading reviews, and heard pretty much the same thing about the sidekick.. The sidekicks always kind of 'appealed' to me, but now I think I am moving on past the 'cool' phone stage and looking at phones that are function based/pro (ie the G2).
Actually I will be getting a new plan come may so I might go with another carrier- we will see.. Gosh I keep lusting over the G2; it looks like wicked! Although I just recently rerooted my G1 and cant get enough of it; the original android = AWESOME!
I was just kind of posting this more for people to get informed about possible phones they could buy after their g1; phones similar to the g1. (rather than a 'what should i buy?' thread).. thanks for the input!
Agreed...Sidekick looks great, but I have had a long experience of reliability with my HTC phones...it would be hard to go past the G2/Desire Z
I had been looking quite closely at these phones. At first I really liked the Desire Z. I wanted one just by looking at it. I wouldn't have gotten rid of the G1 very easily though.
I'm changing my trail of thought though. I'm starting to look ahead to the XPERIA Pro. (Can't post a link, can't edit the post until after 5 minutes... getting tired of these forum restrictions. :/) I think this would be my G1 successor... maybe. I don't think I could afford this when it is properly released here until it becomes an average phone that's not capable of the latest software demands, but I'd damn sure love one of those in silver right now!
Thanks for the input, and I would agree that the xerpia pro looks very nice. At first glance it seems like it might be a bit flimsy; gosh those htc phones just have such a pro/smooth look.
Here are a few links for the Xerpia Pro and photos .. (sucks about the forum restrictions chocolate columbo, just keep posting!)

Looking spiffy but on first glance I might still prefer the G2.
Nobody wants the g2x? (Basically a stock Froyo version of the optimus 2x. Coming out on the 20th i believe.

well, although that phone looks rad, it does not really match the features we g1 lovers like.. mainly an awesome physical keyboard. I think I prefer the G2's maker (htc) over g2x (low build quality LG).
Being a g1 owner atm I do appreciate having a physical keyboard over touchscreen typing, however I'm sick of having smaller screens just cuz I prefer the latter. I don't really see why everyone trips out on how big or thin/small the phone is, its like if the phone isn't a .01mm leaner then the last everyone bashes it and calls it a brick. Ffs I love my fat g1 with extended 2300mah/bigger back cover to boot, I've never dropped it and its always comfortable holding it to type novels like this one or even play emulators on. I guess my main gripe is why nobody has yet to make an 4.3 inch slide out qwerty phone(closest being the epic, but samsung is fail!) My next phone will be the g2x I'm sick of waiting for my dream phone and hearing that cyanogen tweeted g2x is his next personal phone its really a no brainer for anyone that enjoys a stock android experience with tons of mods to come. To hell with the physical keyboard,G2x here I come!

I completely agree- it is very annoying to hear people bash the g1 without even trying it out. So once we have a type-off I can completely dominate them. People need to stop being so obsessed with the size/thickness of a phone. Please people, build quality, and functionality is way more important.
As far as screen size, yea sometimes the smallness of the g1 bothers me. I am stoked to upgrade to a g2 soon though because its a wee bit bigger of a screen
I've adapted to those comments. As you well know, even as big as it is considered, the practicality of the G1 will still outweigh a large majority of phones being made now.
As much as I love it, it is an old phone and it does show. People are going to be more impressed by weight, immediate GUI interface and screen size than much else.
I've had my G1 for a little over two years now. I could've upgraded back in December but that was a very slow time for phone releases. All the fastest phones had been out a while and nothing good had been announced for the near future. As soon as I found out they were releasing the G2X I knew what phone I was going to buy. I loved the G1 for it's stock UI, the keyboard, trackball, and all the dev support it got/gets. I have been feeling that the G1 is not enough for me anymore with it's dated hardware and (sorry for bringing up size) relatively large size compared to current phones. This thing just looks like a dinosaur and feels like I'm riding a bicycle when everyone's driving Corvettes. I'm very picky about what I want in a phone now and honestly the only thing I think the G2x is missing for my own taste is a track ball/pad. But considering I'm going to a 4" screen from a 3.2" I know I won't have a problem. Also, I'm an Nvidia fanboy .
Yes, good point about the trackball. I looooove my trackball, it makes scrolling so painless. But I agree that its hardware is very much dinosauresque which is why I am looking to upgrade.
I think the G2 is one of the best bets... the only problem I have with it is how old the tech is considering duel-core phones are cutting edge now.
For me... I'm thinking of the HTC Sensation.

Atrix vs Nexus S or Arc

Im really interested in buying one of these bad boys but can't really decide. Call volume and battery life is 2 most important thing for me on phone. And since arc is running GB does it have copy and paste? Why would you guys pick arc over those phones. Please don't say cause its sexy. I have till Friday to buy one of these. So please help me out guys. And is there any cases for arc? Or screen protectors? And how is call volume on arc still like x10? Or louder? Some Guy told me on Rogers that he tested arc on meeting and screen looked washed out compare to nexus s. And does arc can support third party earbuds with Michael? And how is stock earbuds sound quality?
thanks
Lmao what's earbuds with Michael? I think if atrix had gb it will kill them both but apparently atrix have locked bootloader same like arc I might wait few months and see if Sony Ericsson has really improved or lying about opening the bootloader after x10 hard to believe that SE promises.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but X10 wasn't the first phone SE gave us some mumble jumble...
OP
I have to admit that I do care about the shape and look of my phone. If Nexus S was better looking phone I would definitely go with it since its a Google phone and you are updated all the time and all goodies for you. I am all for vanilla OS.
atrix is still new and I don't care about dual core, they are not there. It doesn't mean since it has two core then its better. For what use?
I would consider nexus S again if it was better looking(would be the best in one package) its not that bad but it can't compete with arc.
"because its sexy"
Nexus s is so much smoother and faster than arc and optimized very well and arc would have a carriers junk in there that it will slow down stuff. Nexus s is unique and nice device. And it will get the updates first.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I cant speak for the atrix but its tough between the nexus and the arc. The arc has the better camera but the nexus is a little bit quicker imo, probably due to the fact its stock google and doesnt have SE`s stuff.
Both are sexy
and the arc does have copy and paste btw
No card slot in the Nexus would be an absolute no-go for me.

Lack of accessories for arc. But im assuming as soon as Rogers Get the phone. There will be accessories available. Probably nothing for good 3 months.

I'm searching for an android phone last two month. I have seen many videos of unboxing, hands-on, reviews, and etc. and I don't know why dual core phones runs android very choppi on interface, even adding that that phones uses good GPU chips. Motorola Atrix has a good screen resolution, but its interface isn't smoth, same as HTC inspire 4g.
There is a youtube video of an arc showed by a boy, apparently with the last firmware that looks very smoth (more than one or twon moths ago videos), except when you slide to timescape gidget.
I like arc, and i'll waith for the american version.

I've been using a Nexus S for the past couple of weeks and I couldn't disagree more. The Arc feels extremely smooth in comparison, especially the homescreen/launcher.
Yes, I understand that the Nexus S isn't really as consumer-oriented as the Arc but it feels kind of half-arsed, like they haven't really finished it.
As for the screens, despite all the talk of how great sAMOLED is, I'd say the Arc pushes it pretty close.
The Atrix, on paper, is the best of the three but as a Defy owner, I'd never look twice at another Motorola handset until the address the bootloader issue.
The Nexus S is a decent enough phone but the Arc's just nicer IMO.
Nexus s and Arc have the same specs so basicly they have the same performance. The Nexus can feel a little bit snappier because it has vanilla android.
Why i love the Arc is because of it's screen, it's really great even under direct sunlight, compared it with Nexus one and Iphone4. The camera of arc is great but it's similiar to Nexus s. On paper Nexus s has a little bit better battery than arc but in reallity it's almost the same.
I can't talk much about the Atrix, doesn't sold here but it looks like a great phone, only thing that i don't like is the encrypt bootloader.

Moto are really hurting themselves with the bootloader issue. If they think they are losing only xda users they are wrong. Almost all my friends ask me which android phone to get and I always tell them to get HTC as most of them are on Verizon. Recently, even the one's on AT&T I am recommending HTC over Atrix mainly because the bootloader issue.

And are any of your friends likely to ever want to install custom ROMs?
If they're not, then I kinda have to wonder why you're precluding Motorola as an option - you may be recommending a handset that doesn't suit your friends' needs as much because of your personal opinion.
Not to mention, with their most recent handsets HTC are locking the bootloader too, so to recommend them over Motorola on that basis is pretty ridiculous.
The number of sales Motorola will lost over this is pretty minimal, even within the more technical circles - I mean there are plenty of people on here who own Motorola handsets despite the locked bootloader because the rest of the specs demand consideration.

Well, some of them do and others want to be able to do if needed . But most of them ask what I would get and I give them my reasons. One of the reasons I give them for not getting Atrix is because I want screen bigger than 4" after using X10 for a year.
Fair dos.
Most of my friends aren't remotely interested in custom ROMs.

I can't say anything about Atrix, as Motrola doesn't exist in Norway
I have X10i also & I know about low call volume issue, but Arc has not that problem. Volume is loud enough (double louder than X10i).. Battery life is also much better than X10i. I can't compare battery life with Nexus S, but with same usage battery on X10i drains 40%-50% in 6 hours while on Arc only 18%-20%..
To be honest, i chose Arc beacuse of its looks & camera. It's one extra screen protactor in box (as one is already isntalled on screen by default), and one case.. this one:

My thoughts on the Arc and why im going to keep it (read if you want!)

Hello all.
Having owned an X10 for just short of a year I've lived through S.E's initial step in to the smart phone arena, and while they made a lot of mistakes with the X10 they have clearly learned their lesson. Many die hard S.E fans said they were going to jump ship when it came time to purchasing a new phone, myself included, however, having owned my Arc for nearly two weeks now I'm so so glad I stuck with them!
No matter what phone you buy there is always going to be something about it that you don't like, the only thing for me, or what I don't like the most should I say in regards to the Arc is their choice of rear casing, it can be a tad slippery at times so would have preferred to have the same black rubbery casing as on the X10, which I could sit nicely on the slant of the arm on the couch but the Arc just slides down so just sit it at the side of me of me now.
Sure a default Android U.I would be perfect but having now rooted and changed most of it I like my phone even more. There's a few more little niggles such as the bootup time but I'm sure that will be resolved at some point just like a few issues with the X10 were. It's easy to say when you buy a phone it shouldn't come with any issues, unfortunately they do, whether you go with S.E, Samsung or HTC, go browse the forums of any phone on XDA and you'll see that some people are happy with their phones and some aren't, "you can't please all of the people all of the time"!
I recall a user on AndroidForums who had had their X10 replaced a good few times, at least 3 or 4 but were never happy, always finding some sort of fault with the phone and soon became apparent that the said user would have been better suited with a Nokia 7210 or similar phone because their Smart Phone was clearly too smart for them. I'm not saying you need to be a technophile to be able to use a smart phone nor should you have to be for it work as intended, but some people are always going to have issues for whatever reason.
Some people are unlucky and receive a dodgy handset whether it's software or hardware based so there isn't a great deal you can do on such occasions, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to suffer the same issues one person might be having.
To sum up, I love my Arc, current Andoid OS, fast and looks the business, as I've already stated I'm so glad I decided to stick with S.E because imo they've made up for the mistakes they made with the X10.
This is something I would like to see .. Good work bud
+1
Love this thing.

Good thread through.. Androids biggest perform is also its biggest success.. Openness. It allows the knowledgeable to do some seriously impressive things with their phones.. But it also lets the idiots have a go as well..then when they knacker their phone they blame everyone else..

This time last night I was trying to decide whether to buy an Arc or go for something else. After reading the 'other' thread, I had some real concerns about how good the Arc really was. After ALOT more reading tons & tons of threads/reviews I decided to bite the bullet and get an Arc.
To be honest I really can't see what people are complaining about? I think this thing is fantastic! I've spent all day on it and can't see wtf the fuss is about. Battery life is good, it's fast and smooth and looks pretty f**king cool.
Granted I've only played with it for 10 hours but at this stage the biggest problem I've found is getting used to how sensitive the touch screen is although that's more my fault as I'm not exactly petite and gentle. Also, the back was quite slippery but I've put this skin on and it cleared that problem up....

+1! Like people who root their phones then ask questions like "now what", if you don't know what something is before doing it, then you don't need to and should shouldn't do it in the first place, imo.

The arc for me is definitely one to miss. You say the arc is fast. That's because your compairing it with your experience of the x10 with older hardware and dated software. Pit the arc against the newer 2011 phones and you'll find its quite slow in comparison. It is to the x10 what windows 7 was to vista (even then I feel I am being a bit harsh to windows 7). It's a polished up version and as such, I see absolutely no reason upgrading from the x10 to it. With gingerbread coming to the x10 soon, I'll see my contract through and hope SE come up with a truly worthy competitor. If they fail to wake up from their slumber by then, the GS3 will most likely be the choice (iphone rip off or not).

Most people who purchase the Arc after owning the X10 are X10 apologists.
I am enjoying my Desire HD. However I will not be upgrading to the Sensation...
If SE has something decent up its sleeves and it comes up in time...

Hey guys.
I am a happy owner of the silver arc for 3 days now. I am very satisfied with it, battery on the first charge lasted almost 24 hours - of course somewhat light usage.
I only had to insert a piece of paper under the battery cover to eliminate squeaks.
I noticed you had X10 before. My gf is very impressed with arc and because of the lower price of the X10, she is considering buying it. Can you tell me how much better is the battery on the arc, comparing to the X10?
Thanks.

It largly depend on how you use your phone and ofcourse the android implementation on your device.
Both x10 and arc just got 2.1.B and 2.3.3 update which many claim has increased the battery life.
Also, display is most important factor which drains battery.
Bottomline x10 will have tiny winy bit advantage over arc when 2.3. 3 comes to x10. Both have 1500mA battery.
So, imo, let handling, look, camera be the deciding factors.
I understand, but I believe that the screen on the arc should be more energy efficient. Check the presentation form the xperia acro launch in Japan:
http://www.talkandroid.com/37350-sony-ericsson-xperia-acro-presentation-images-leaked/gpad7/
And we should not forget the cpu technology (45 nm vs. 65nm).
I still believe that if you use both devices exactly the same, the arc should last longer. Just my thought.

SGS v X10i

Hi,
When I left the x10 forums some of you asked me to do a post on the comparison of my new SGS to my old X10i. Well here I go:
I have had my SGS for a day now, the first thing I did was flash a custom rom and kernel. Now some of you said it was a little fiddlely it is a little bit fiddlely but reality it is only different. Using Odin to flash a rom is no different to using flash tool. One huge difference is you can flash a kernel on the phone !!! Yes you can us an app to flash a kernel without having to be at a pc.
The phone came with froyo, even with froyo the SGS felt smoother and faster than the x10 with gingerbread on it. Once the custom rom was in and the kernel was in i started getting the phone how i want it.
I have to say the phone is lightning fast, smooth and if I am honest the X10 is miles away from being anywhere near as good. The battery life is better, the sound is better, the in call sound is better everything is so so so much better.
Now this is just my opinion and my experience, but after using a Sony x10 for so long in truth the x10 was nothing compared to some of the phones out there. Even though the SGS is old now and has a bigger faster replacement out there is still loads of development happening and it can still keep its own with some of the newer phones that have come out.
My advice Ebay the x10 and get bidding on a SGS, if you are in a long contract like me. Or get an SGS2 if you can upgrade.
Sorry Sony not sure i could trust another device from you after seeing what you gave us with the x10
*this is only my opinion and my experience, I have returned to give it as requested by some users in my good bye post, please ask me anything if you want to know anything specific about the SGS*
I hope this has give you some idea from a users point of view and been informative
nice review. but i dont agree that x10 is that bad lol
I definitely agree it is that bad....

Honestly I loved my x10, but when you use something like the SGS you realise just what an android based smartphone should be the difference is huge
for my opinion, x10 is best android phone over its price value. even though the phone model is over a year but at 1Ghz processor, still not that bad nowadays. SGS is good but expensive. my next upgrade might be HTC phone
Please dont post like this i feel very very bad
I bought x10 1-2 months ago i was having a option between nexus s and galaxy s and xperia x10...
Galaxy S- I didn't bought it coz of touchwiz i was not knowing about its fantastic GPU...
Nexus S- I thought nexus S is only having 480p recording and the rest is the same...
Xperia x10- I bought it coz it looked great and the spects was also good and then came the video showing gingerbread update so i desided to buy x10 and bought it...
I was not knowing about its bad GPU but came to know after i bought it i was having hopes atleast the 2.3 update will bring something great but sony F***ed all...
Got launcher Pro Plus I removed touch whiz, even though it was not that bad
sorry
Hi Chiefy,
Have you got all of your apps on yet my x10 flew on gb after the fresh install but once I had loaded about 30 apps it slowed alot. I now have 65 market apps +, I'm overclocked with interactive governor, sysctl and build prop tweaks and its as fast as a fresh install again. (almost)
Cheers.

I have a bout 60+ apps on my sgs, over clocked to 1.2ghz and it flys everything is as smooth as butter, when i had my x10 once i had but in a custome kernel and z's rom I thought my phone was smooth, I can not begin to tell how just how much faster and smoother the sgs is compared to when i had my x10
Thanks for the thread Chief, soon as i get one off ebay i will join you for a mess about, will keep my x10, will see that out until it dies, be nice to have them side by side to compare but i trust you review as nobody knows the ins and outs of the x10 better than a flash junkie.

yeah nexus s had adreno 205 too, much better gpu than adreno 200
of course the x10 can't keep up with the newer phones, even if the devs get the utmost out of it you can't replace the hardware with flashing a custom rom/kernel. However the x10 is in no way a bad phone even in comparison to the SGS, I've flashed many phones for mates in the past and I must say, none of those phones felt better in my hand than the x10 (hardware/case wise). Of course they had better hardware and were faster but I don't use my phone to play tons of games with it, it's neat if it can do it but also very overrated in my opinion. I use it to read books, browse the web, watch a video or 2 and if the iPod is out of battery I even use it for music but that's seldom and the camera of course is still very very good on the x10.
It all comes down to your preferences, if you want to have a bad-ass phone that can compete with handheld consoles in terms of gaming you can of course put a lot of money in it, but if you just want a good, solid phone for everyday use without a lot of gaming the x10 is just right.
I use mine with Wolfbreak's ROM and ADW Launcher, have every animation off because that's not what I look for in a phone and it is very smooth and fast for me when browsing/opening an app, smoother than the SGS with MIUI, as smooth as the HTC Sensation/Desire HD with a custom rom.
Also I don't think Sony did a bad job at all, they might have screwed up early with 1.6 and 2.1 with call volume being low but they gave us 2.3.3 after all, not everyone would have done that and I've had the chance to work with an Arc lately and apart from the cheap backcover the phone is brilliant in my opinion and I would probably get it over any Samsung/HTC phone.

People seem to lie to themselves to make them feel better.
Sorry but those on the worst laggy rom would still be 100 times smoother than the x10
Hey Chieff...
Ive also moved away from the X10 since May and i can tell you it was a great change... The phone is really fast and development is not near to an end... The only downside of the SGS i must say is the Camera but other than that the freacking phone overcome the X10 by far...
Chieff if you need any help in the SGS forums let me know i have worked and done some stuffs in there as well and kinda have some experience ....

I think the sgs is the phone I would have bought if it was a choice (my x10 was a very kind donation!) sgs is the best phone of its generation and the development is one of the most exciting. I hear that there is a chance the devs can get hd2 levels of hackability!
Enjoy Chiefy!
I will wait for some ice cream sandwich flavoured delights in the future, and for now, enjoy my x10.

all my phones have been sony ericssons so far and i must say: not one of them has ever let me down or disapointed me. The x10 was one of the first phones with an 1ghz processor and i think it can still keep up with most of the phones of today.
But issnt the sgs much "newer" than the x10?

why ive caved and decided i WILL get the SGSIII

well it seems everyone is making one of these lately, so i figured i would too.
Why i considered passing
first off, as most of you, i was pretty disappointed after Samsung's release.. i heard about this barrel-less, 1080p HD AMOLED Plus display, a tall order indeed, but with Samsung's track record, and complex to beat Apple in every area, totally believable! the Galaxy Nexus released half a year ago attained 720p, so the obvious next step was 1080p, especially after Samsung made that 2048x1536 iPad3 screen for Apple.
Samsung had announced their A15 processor, and everyone started going quadcore, so while i wasnt making any bets on it, i was hopeful for a quadcore A15, instead we got the quadcore A9.
onto the design, i had no gripes with the look of it, short of it didnt look like the rumored barrel-less look. im pleased with white, but shocked theres no black
Not waterproof =[, i know it was a stretch, but early rumors suggested we may see a waterproof Galaxy phone here. sadly not the case
Lastly, i was hopeful for the Xenon flash
basically, we didnt get this

Why i Reconsidered
Screen
while its very disappointing, it IS an upgrade from the SGSII, just because of sheer pixel density. 720 pentile > 480 RGB
Sound
the SGSIII will be the sound phone of the year! with an amazing Soundchip with DAC, and one of the first to use APT-X LOSSLESS Bluetooth Audio Streaming! my car's new stereo will be very happy!
Better FASTER Camera
while the MP hasnt changed, the sensor of the camera has, and now with zero shutter lag, finally! the picture i see when i snap a shot will be the picture i get, not whatever happens 1 second after.. cant tell you how many great shots ive missed because of this
LED Notification!
finally we get to have an LED notification. with my SGSII ive had to use BLN, and if you know anything about BLN, youll know it rapes your battery. no more choosing between notification or battery life.
Processor
while ive never felt a lag with my SGSII processor, the one area that can always be improved in browser speed. this is the biggest thing quadcore will affect. and a faster browser means a happier me. it will also increase battery life, since ill be spending less time waiting for pages to load.
Support
while its debatable other phones (which will not be named lol) may pose a serious threat, nobody has support like a Galaxy phone. Devs are all over Galaxy phones, and with people like supercurio spreading his voodoo goodness, and Team Hacksung adding their custom AOSP roms, we have lots to look forward to.
New Software Features
while these will probably be ported to the SGSII, its safe to assume theyll work a lot smoother on the phone theyre intended for.
Battery Life
im not sure if well actually see improved battery life, as my SGSII has the 2000MAh extended battery, but im hopeful new hardware will be less energy demanding.
LED Light
yes i said LED Light, i can tell you my SGSII has the brightest light ive seen on any mobile, and i currently own the HTC One X, and the LED is very weak. i use my phone as a flashlight all the time, and my SGSII reads just over 90 lumens using my LUX Meter. i expect the SGSIII will have the same LED, i doubt it will have weaker, and i am hopeful it will have better. (if anyone knows let me know)
NFC
i dont know if ill ever have a chance to use this in the US, but i LOVE the idea of using my phone as a creditcard. like something out of an anime! (any Eden of the East fans out there?)
Something New
im very happy with my phone, but its nice to treat myself to something new every once in a while. god knows we all could use it. it seems the SGSIII will be an improvement in every area of the SGSII
If that picture was a real SGS III....
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
Minor correction to the first post - the S3 isn't the first to use Apt-X. The Razr and the One X both have it (as does the iPad3 and several of Apple's computers).
Screen
I don't really think a jump from 720 to 1080 is really going to be that noticable on a smallish screen like what the SGS III will have. I don't tend to look at my device under a magnifying glass. Though on a tablet it would definitely make it sharper.
Camera
Xenon flash would be nice, but it was a bit much to hope for. It will be a step up from my Evo 3D, HTC screwed up the camera on that device. Mp doesn't make a difference if it is a good chip.
Processor
I have my Evo 3D on a custom ROM overclocked and it is running really smoothly. Two extra cores is nice, but the right processor will do right if it is a dual core. I won't be too disappointed if we don't end up with the Exynos here in the states as long as the chip is comparable.
Support
I'm looking forward to an SGS and getting good support from devs. My Evo 3D has been a hassle...
Software
Looking forward to the interesting opportunities with the voice control. I don't care too much for Touchwiz, but there are other launchers that can be used (plus custom ROMs.)
Battery
Newer hardware does tend to be less stressful on the battery even if it is more powerful. I manage my radios well so I'm not too worried, though I am a bit concerned about how the voice control will work with that. I'm not sure if I like the idea of my phone waiting to hear me say Hi Galaxy! because that seems like it might drain the battery.
All in all I'm ready to go up to the Sprint store and tell them to take my money. I was kind of hoping to see a ceramic body, though I am ok with the design they came up with. Looking forward to the AMOLED screen and the decent combination of hardware.

can i ask, why are you even in the SGS3 section if youre not here to gossip? the phone isnt even out yet, so clearly youre not here to get support. everyone whos here is here because they want to share their personal opinions, chitchat, gossip, convince themself to get the phone, or try and convince themself not to. nobody is here for development, troubleshoot, or get support of any kind, so if seeing other humans interact is offsetting you like it is, i suggest you come back after May, when the phone is actually released. till then well continue to talk about the pentile display, if the camera is any good, is the sgs3 better than the htc one, and whatever the h3ll else we feel like. so you sir can have a nice day, and let us have ours.
My reason is because I will get more re-sale value of my SGS2 now than in 6 months time (Nexus) or 12 months time (SGS4).

Um, his concern isn't with chat/gossip/whatever over the phone, he's annoyed with all the individual topics bring created starting out with "why I chose/ordered the sgs3" or "why I hate the sgs3." It's called forum etiquette 101.
The point is... when there are already nearly IDENTICAL topics, post there instead of starting a brand new one just to stay a new topic. Helps to keep the General section somewhat manageable enough to navigate.

Use the general thread here for general chat.
We dont need everyone writing one of these, can just go in the general thread.
Edit: And report dupe threads, that way they will get cleaned up much faster.
