Love my epic, hate my sprint. - Epic 4G General

So I can't bare to be without my Epic every waking second of the day. sue me. My problem is I'm moving out of the country and am keeping my phone. I want to basically use it as a wifi enabled android powered mp3 player. Problem is I'm worried it will constantly be searching for a signal. I've removed my msid and phone number from my ##msl# dialer code, but the phone still searches for a signal killing the battery life (I've seen the difference in the battery menu between no signal and airplane mode). I would leave it in airplane mode and be happy except that you don't get bluetooth while in airplane mode. is there a way I can just get the cell radio out of the os since I'm not going to need it anymore, and still keep my bluetooth, wifi, and gps functionality?
Thx in advance for any advice

Did you check out the ##3282# menu? Might be something useful in there

You can disable just the cellular radio using Tasker... this will still allow you to use wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc...

##debug# is an interesting dialer.code as well

I don't have Tasker anymore but I believe you just create a widget with the action of Phone > Radio > Off or something to that effect.
Then when you click the widget it will simply put an X over the signal bars instead of that annoying airplane, still allowing you to use all the secondary radios.

Can I ask a question here? I live in Phoenix, Arizona and I don't get any 4G. Does anybody else have this problem? Like, come on Sprint. I'm in the capitol of the Grand Canyon State.

[Q] Sound Whenever Connecting to a Cell Network

Hey guys, can't find the answer anywhere but, whenever I connect to a cell network 3g/4g or lose the connection whatever I am doing on the phone sound wise is interrupted by an alert. Any idea how to turn this off?
You're right, there doesn't seem to be a setting for that - unfortunately

I agree on this one. I tried browsing system files in hopes of locating and replacing the file but didn't have any luck. Pretty embarrassing when I'm at work and my pocket starts twinkling repeatedly as my phone tries reconnecting to network.
Well back to Verizon and the fascinate on Thursday. Don't have 4g in MN yet anyhow

Cell Radio

I need a way to kill the cell but keep WiFi. How is this done? Airplane kills it all. About to travel and can't find a way.

Have you tried turning on airplane mode then turning wifi
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Airplane Mode means all off. Won't do it..
Well that works for me just turn on airplane mode and turn wifi back on just tried it and it works fine I'm doingit right now
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Agreed, just go airplane then reenable WiFi. You should also have the option to turn off mobile networks in settings.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Switch pro allows that option for their airplane mode widget.

Damn, I'm sorry guys. It did work. I swear when I flew in Sep. It wouldn't work like that. Thanks for the help! : )
Damn this phone is awesome!

The ability to have airplane mode on and still use wifi is actually becoming very common apparently. The iPhone has had that latent functionality since the 3G, however I think the reason it was so common there is due to AT&Ts exorbant roaming rates.
/offtopic
Back on subject, I like that ability as using wifi for the majority of functions of my device helps conserve battery for me.

Roaming

I thought that if the phone can't get a sprint signal it'll roam?
I get absolutely 0 sprint service in the part of florida I'm in, but it doesn't even roam to verizon (which gets all bars here). It just shuts the radio off.
My friend with an lg rumor(I think that's what itscalled...its a sprint lg texting phone) gets no servicebut roams off verizon while over here...
What's wrong with the epics radio -_- I've been using google voie to text over wifi, but I need to make calls too. I keep getting "MISSED CALL FROM 555-5555" messages but my phone doesn't even ring -_-
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
You can force roam using Roam Control.
http://market.android.com/details?id=com.vuvuzela.roamcontrol
It works perfectly for me.
I can't buy it. Also, I shouldn't have to pay extra to roam for free...the phone should automatically switch instead of cutting the radio off. I can understan using roam control in areas where the phone hangs onto weak sprint signals and contantly switches back and forth, but there is absolutely no service here from sprint
The hero roamed full bars last time I was in a strictly no-sprint zone.
I hope cyanogen mod gets the mms bug fixed soon, ebecause I know thres a "roam" option in the cm menus. Atleast it was on the hero
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
dos anyone elses phone roam when there's 0 signal from sprint? Or does your radio cut off too?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Mine roams fine. Have you checked the settings in Mobile Networks?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah and I thought that the roam guard mightve been aproblem but I turned it off and still a nogo
It'll stay with the "no smoking" symbol until I hit a sprint tower (which I lock onto five minutesfrom the house -_- so its not like ima be roaming alllllll the time sprint!!)

I highly recommend Roam Control.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vuvuzela.roamcontrol
I would love roam control
I've wanted it since the developer came out with it in the epic forums, but I can't buy it.
Which is why I hope that now that froyo sauce was released, cm will move over to rc1 territory and it'll be a simple toggle in the settings...
Pure aosp with speed and force roam built in....
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Try updating the PRL? When I roam it cuts off my 3g which is annoying but I still have cell signal.
I updated prl as soon as I updated to eb13
It wasn't bothring me that I wasn't getting roam, but I was on dk28 so I affiliated it with that modem since there were other bugs....but this is official froyo now so I figured a prl and profile update in sprint territory would've fixed it, but it didn't.
Unless its a hardware problem....... D:

dumb question.....did you make sure you phone was set to allow roaming?
Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Network Settings>system Settings>Automatic.
btw, I use roam control because it allows you to force Roam Only so it doesn't keep switching in low signal areas.

I get "unable to parse text" whenever anything is tried with Roam Control.
Tried fresh install, reboots, etc. No change.
Edit to add, i'm rooted of course.
Yeah roaming is set to automatic
Is there a dialer code that might help with signal searching?
I remember when I first got the epic, ther was something about dialing *#*#something and there was a menu where you would tell it to check CDMA only becauseit would search for gsm....would that help?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Roam control requires root...just an fyi.
It works great here on the new 2.2 update. The phone also roams by itself and connects to data via 1x with a normal prl. Or with a fixed prl it connects to 3g
Do you mean you never have a signal, ever? During your day to day life at home and work...? Cuz if so, dude, srsly: get off of Sprint. If you just roam 24/7, they'll drop your account anyway.
You sound like you have really unique, mysterious circumstances keeping you both attached to Sprint and unable to make purchases on the market (which is even more weird).
Call me a skeptic, but I'm having trouble buying into your story. :/ If you want to play this game, you can flash a Verizon PRL (do we know how to do this on Epic...?), but if/when Sprint cancels your account, do us a favor and don't waste XDA's bandwidth on a "WTF SPRINT" thread.

Interesting
Hmmm, curious on how this will be implemented, and the benefits for the evo.
There some good info on the bottom link I provided, sprint has all the claiming 50 percent savings on your battery if you're using the optimizer. I'm willing to try it

what makes this optimizer special? My EVO will automatically toggle my 3g/4g/wifi already. I just leave on all of my radios...when I get home my wifi turns on when I leave wifi turns off and 3g comes back on....and when im in a 4g area my 4g automatically turn on.
So I dont get what makes this any different?
I believe it will automatically turn your radios On only when you have service available. Ie. when you enter a known 4G area the phone will recognize it and will automatically turn your 4G radio on. No need for you to have it on all day scanning and wasting battery. same goes for Wifi connections.
It will be interesting to see it work. I'm willing to try it. Sprint is pushing this service to most if not all of their smart phones.

It is sprint's idea to try and offload as many users from their network as possible. Which if it automatically selected the best network. IE wiFi or WiMax then they are not hammering their network as hard.
Haha touché
Good point

only for non rooted phones ????
so when will the devs add this to their roms
I hope they update android and/or sense.....I know they didnt state that in the update notes but back in January when we got 2.3.5 that wasnt in the notes either.
So I'm hoping for a surprise to hold me over until my upgrade in November
I would suspect that it only has the sprint optimizer, which really is just a way to offload consumption on their cell towers..
Just curious did anyone receive this update yet?

Putting phone into emergency power saving mode

Here is my thought.
I live in Florida, and if a hurricane comes and knocks out power, I would like my cell phone to be able to send/receive e-mail/text, and phone calls. I don't want ANYTHING else to function like Facebook, Words with Friends, etc. to conserve battery life as much as I can.
Is there an easy way to do this in an emergency situation?
Freeze all the apps since you want email you cannot simply turn off data. Also note that there is a good chance power will be out to the cell tower near you as well. Generator power only lasts so long.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium
In an emergency situation you turn on airplane mode and toggle it once an hour or once every few hours to get messages. Power might be out for days, so you don't want data on all the time as its a waste and you prob don't need texts and emails immediately.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
For that situation I would buy a car jump starter and use that to charge your phone.

You know it would be cool to have an app where you choose certain apps out of your app list to be frozen and unfrozen on command. Like a widget clicker or even a status toggle. Just an idea.
Also just curious but if power get knocked out wouldn't that kill the towers as well? Or do they have emergency batteries?

Keep in mind your TWS % is a big factor in battery drain. Also, if your area gets a direct hit, you most likely won't be able to call out. Texting will still work.
I know this from experience during Katrina. Anyone in the 504 code was SOL for calls, but text and direct connect still worked.

i was going to suggest this app. Juice Defender has preset power save options, it runs balanced by default, u can go up to advanced to save more battery and extreme to save alot of battery. You can also set up a custom plan to shut down pretty much everything but what u want.
