Cell Radio - Epic 4G General

I need a way to kill the cell but keep WiFi. How is this done? Airplane kills it all. About to travel and can't find a way.

Have you tried turning on airplane mode then turning wifi
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Airplane Mode means all off. Won't do it..

Well that works for me just turn on airplane mode and turn wifi back on just tried it and it works fine I'm doingit right now
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Agreed, just go airplane then reenable WiFi. You should also have the option to turn off mobile networks in settings.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Switch pro allows that option for their airplane mode widget.

Damn, I'm sorry guys. It did work. I swear when I flew in Sep. It wouldn't work like that. Thanks for the help! : )
Damn this phone is awesome!

The ability to have airplane mode on and still use wifi is actually becoming very common apparently. The iPhone has had that latent functionality since the 3G, however I think the reason it was so common there is due to AT&Ts exorbant roaming rates.
/offtopic
Back on subject, I like that ability as using wifi for the majority of functions of my device helps conserve battery for me.

Love my epic, hate my sprint.

So I can't bare to be without my Epic every waking second of the day. sue me. My problem is I'm moving out of the country and am keeping my phone. I want to basically use it as a wifi enabled android powered mp3 player. Problem is I'm worried it will constantly be searching for a signal. I've removed my msid and phone number from my ##msl# dialer code, but the phone still searches for a signal killing the battery life (I've seen the difference in the battery menu between no signal and airplane mode). I would leave it in airplane mode and be happy except that you don't get bluetooth while in airplane mode. is there a way I can just get the cell radio out of the os since I'm not going to need it anymore, and still keep my bluetooth, wifi, and gps functionality?
Thx in advance for any advice

Did you check out the ##3282# menu? Might be something useful in there

You can disable just the cellular radio using Tasker... this will still allow you to use wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc...
##debug# is an interesting dialer.code as well

I don't have Tasker anymore but I believe you just create a widget with the action of Phone > Radio > Off or something to that effect.
Then when you click the widget it will simply put an X over the signal bars instead of that annoying airplane, still allowing you to use all the secondary radios.

Can I ask a question here? I live in Phoenix, Arizona and I don't get any 4G. Does anybody else have this problem? Like, come on Sprint. I'm in the capitol of the Grand Canyon State.

3g/4g toggles

does anyone know how to shut off 3g without shutting off 4g? I know the 4g toggle doesn't work, which I'm fine with. 3g is what I wish to shut off. anyone?

Bump. Wow there's really no way to do this?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
I'm gonna keep bumping this until SOMEONE answers! There's gotta be a way to shut off 3g while staying connected to 4g. I was able to do this on every rom on my epic. Its a HUGE battery saver if your constantly covered in 4g.

the radio on this phone doesnt seem to separate evdo/cdma/4g.. when u turn off one you turn off the other.
ive found you can be in airplane mode while on wifi.. but thats about it.

The above post seems to make more sense than my suggestion below.
You could just install a custom ROM that doesn't support 3g. Like Task 14. I've seen people use it and it work fine, just losing 3g. But I wouldn't expect much, if any support running it on a 3g device and it being it's a WI-FI ONLY ROM.
Edit: no idea for sure if this would definitely solve the battery problem though either.

Or you could simply enable flight mode, which deactivates the 3g and wifi. After the tab goes in flight mode, reenable wifi only. This works for me, i use it in areas where 3g reception is bad to save battery

The last few days I have been running Tasker with a script that enables flight mode whenever its locked and disables i whenever its unlocked. My batterylife has quadrupled that way, not exactly sure why. I dont need mail sync etc, so this was a good solution for me.

It's even really handy, when you enter pin and enter flight mode, to simply use power button menu to quickly start 3G

ROM with no phone or 3g capabilities.

I was thinking today. Sadly the day will eventually come when I will get a new phone. I love my EVO and would probably want to keep it around after I move on. Would there be any point to creating a ROM that basically turns the phone into a mini WiFi tablet. Maybe removing the phone and 3g and 4g capabilities would make the phone quicker and last longer battery wise. I honestly don't know as I'm a noob. But it was just a thought. Maybe this could be accomplished by simply removing some system apks. Idk.

Airplane mode.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Hey man,
The fastest way to turn off the 3g connections is airplane mode, but for best rom to run if you are going to use it as a reader tablet thing lol I would either suggest cm7 or you might like this!

Wouldn't airplane mode kill WiFi too?

Pretty sure if you turn on airplane mode first, then wifi on, it works. If I remember correctly.

Hmm. Never tried that. Thanks. So my idea IS pointless... LOL. Thought I had a good one there.

Interesting
Hmmm, curious on how this will be implemented, and the benefits for the evo.
There some good info on the bottom link I provided, sprint has all the claiming 50 percent savings on your battery if you're using the optimizer. I'm willing to try it

Seems like a feature I've seen Motorola hype about their VZW phones
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Is this setting going to put us on a roaming network, even if a Sprint network is available, because of better speeds or strength?
This will be interesting to try out

what makes this optimizer special? My EVO will automatically toggle my 3g/4g/wifi already. I just leave on all of my radios...when I get home my wifi turns on when I leave wifi turns off and 3g comes back on....and when im in a 4g area my 4g automatically turn on.
So I dont get what makes this any different?
I believe it will automatically turn your radios On only when you have service available. Ie. when you enter a known 4G area the phone will recognize it and will automatically turn your 4G radio on. No need for you to have it on all day scanning and wasting battery. same goes for Wifi connections.
It will be interesting to see it work. I'm willing to try it. Sprint is pushing this service to most if not all of their smart phones.

It is sprint's idea to try and offload as many users from their network as possible. Which if it automatically selected the best network. IE wiFi or WiMax then they are not hammering their network as hard.
Haha touché
Good point

I notice it doesn't have a full change log. Is there going to be radio updates? Hboot? Looking down the list none of the updates show these, when they were added.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
only for non rooted phones ????
so when will the devs add this to their roms
I hope they update android and/or sense.....I know they didnt state that in the update notes but back in January when we got 2.3.5 that wasnt in the notes either.
So I'm hoping for a surprise to hold me over until my upgrade in November
I would suspect that it only has the sprint optimizer, which really is just a way to offload consumption on their cell towers..
Just curious did anyone receive this update yet?
