My wife just got a GS2 and after setting it up and playing around with it for a few days I'm convinced the two are fairly similar in use.
Sure the GS2 is a bit faster when multitasking but day to day use is to me almost the same.
That said I'm happy to hold off for newer design when it comes as jvq on GS1 with ext4 does it all only on a slightly smaller screen.
Battery life is comparable.
Browser is almost identical in speed.
Gmail a slight bit slower.
Phone call quality is on par.
Music player... Sounds great with both running voodoo app.
Just wish it had a flash for camera but still takes amazing pics for 5mp.

I'm not a fan of the SGS2 form factor. Too big and bulky for me.
It's a shame that the SGS2 wasn't the exact same form factor as the original SGS with an improved camera otherwise it would be my phone...

Thank God the SGS2 wasn't released the 14th as I believed, because I would have bought one. I think my SGS1 does the job very well and it would be stupid to buy it. All that "must get better phone" non sense... I'll leave that for the iPhone users
I will install CM7 soon and will forget the thought of buying this phone.
SGS 1 is better then SGS2 about the battery cover and other important parts.
I would like the RGB screen in SGS2 (compared to pentile on SGS) but other than that I'm not really clamouring for any of the other features. Maybe the RAM would be nice, but the dual-core and 8MP/1080p camera don't seem that big of a deal.
The clincher for me to upgrade would be a higher resolution, 960x540 would be nice at 4.5", and a more powerful GPU to go with it. I feel like future games will run out of GPU before they max out the CPU, maybe I am wrong.
One thing that many reviews don't really consider is what about SD speed? I find myself wishing the SD card were faster when doing many tasks like transferring files via USB, installing/updating applications, etc... I may have seen something about improved SD speed in the SGS2 but I can't recall exactly.
In the end I would be very happy to win one for free in the Bell contest, but for my own money I will hold off until at least the next flagship release. I shouldn't really be dropping $500+ on new phones every year and I have no regrets about the SGS, it seems like it will have good longevity especially in the GPU department.

Agree with the screen and the ram, the SGS2 is a multitasking god.
It rarely kills apps which most of the time makes it seem like its faster because it never has to relaunch anything

MIUI is based on CM7 which lacks GPU accelerated browser.
Played ard with my frd's stock SGS2.
Very smooth without lag.
1 big stickly point with SGS is its sucky GPS. I think SGS2 fixed that problem.

Gps locks almost instantly for me on jvq with Aus settings in Gps fix.
No problems with tracking and I use it everyday for work. I think it was hit and miss with some gs1 as its always worked for me even on 2.1.

I have never had luck with gps, it locks on really quick and is pretty accurate (use it for golfing all the time) but once I jump into a vehicle it goes off the charts.
Mind you I never use gps in my vehicle, golfing + sgs = pro
Even with the Hype,.SGS 2 still has many problems, yellow tint, pink spot, over heating, weak battery... I'm glad I stick with my SGS..Now with DXJVQ.. SGS is finally a beast unleashed!

Hey dude
The one thing I miss from sgs is an led flash.
Optimus 2x has that.
But optimus has a lcd screen, where sgs is oled.
Because oled has no back light, if you use a dark theme, you can get so much more battery use with the display on with oled phones than with lcd phones.
I'd never buy an lcd phone again, but I do miss having a camera flash on the sgs.
Depends what's more important to you.

Gs1 definitely sounds better than GS2. Especially with voodoo sound.
And yeah a flash would be good but when I compare night shots with both cameras, the flash makes people look like startled animals in headlights. GS1 night pics are remarkably clear and natural.

I guess samsung galaxy S2 is coming soon !!!
Well in theory its a good swap, in terms of hardware the Galaxy S is lightly better than the X10i, the GPU in the Galaxy S is unmatched but the camera is a lot better in the X10i cos soon it will have HD recording with Continuous Autofocus which is brill, plus that beautiful screen is to die for in the Galaxy S, X10i beats the Galaxy S in terms of design, cos Galaxy S jus Looks like an iPhone wannabe, im stickin to my X10i even though i got offered a HTC Desire HD. if you don't mind to get GPS issues and lag within the core chip of the galaxy S go for it, the Amoled display is brighter and the photo camera is better, also there is no flashlight on the samsung
also, the amoled consumes more battery displaying the white color, keep that in mind.

no that is not the case. She is not aware of the power of android and wants to sell it along with her blackberry to buy an Iphone 4. An ignorant decision according to me and probably many of you, but for the common phone user who dont quite know how to use android it looks appealing. Therefore she accepted a swap because she is selling it either way.

My Samsung Captivate is my first android phone and I've never handled an x10, so I can't make a direct comparison. But I'm very pleased with it and I doubt you would be disappointed. It is ridiculously simple to mod. I had mine rooted & Froyo'd the same day I got it. The xda SGS forums are *very* active, so if you are interested in trying different hacks/ROMs, the SGS is a good choice

My phone was slow getting a sat lock (sometimes >20 secs) while it had Eclair, but now it consistently gets a lock within 5 seconds. Lag is noticeable only when there are multiple apps still running in background. This is easily remedied by killing unneeded apps. If you think it's still laggy, you can install One Click Lag Fix (OCLF) and lag disappears automagically
Yes, the screen consumes juice to show colors & white, but it uses *no* battery to show black. That is also why the contrast is awesome (black is black, not dark grey)
My phone's camera isn't the best and there's no LED flash, but it's good enough for quick shots of everyday stuff
Dropped from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
No.
The only thing I like about the Galaxy S is the screen, it really is better than the X10's. That's about it though -- I wouldn't be wanting to hold that - as someone already mentioned - horribly tacky looking phone. It's embarassing. Samsung's TouchWiz UI is comical. Seemingly they targeted the 8-12 year old crowd and by the looks of it, they've succeeded. The X10's UI is FAR more profesional looking.
The X10's build quality and looks are to die for, I wouldn't even dream about swapping it for anything else. I've also demonstrated the X10 to many inquisitive people, definitely much more than when I had the iPhone previously. Currently it can be modded to a decent level as you can see from the Homescreen screenshots thread -- and with 2.1 coming, I'm confident it'll address few other shortcomings the X10 initially had when it launched. Personally I don't care about 16 million colors, it doesn't seem to hinder my media experience one bit.
Ultimately, it's your choice -- all the best

Very nice indeed. However, I think overall, I'd still prefer the Atrix 4G: timelier updates (save for the cliq debacle, which seems to have been an isolated incident, all other headsets that got FroYo rather quickly considered), a more manageable screen size (4" screen is the sweet spot for me), and a higher resolution screen, despite the smaller size (higher pixel density FTW).
We still don't know how much RAM it'll have, as the Atrix 4G will have 1GB and the only other dual core phone out now has only 512MB, and how big a battery it'll have (The Atrix 4G packing a 1930mAH), and whether it'll have fingerprint reader for unlocking the phone (highly doubtful though).
Unless the Galaxy S II has another trick up its sleeve, it'll lose my business. Samsung's "whatever" attitude helps no one. While Motorola is infinitely less developer friendly, with the Tegra 2 at the core, I doubt anyone will be hurting for speed, and there's still a certain degree of customization that can take place in stock phones, so those who hate Motoblur can go with a different launcher to change things up, among other things.

Right now, yeah, you could get by pretty well with a galaxy s1. The question is, how well will it work in a year and a half? The 3 real arguments for the S2 over the S1 right now are:
1) It's a shiny new toy and I want it really bad.
2) It's somewhat more future-proof. This phone won't be the best in a year and a half, but it will still be pretty good.
3) I'm a huge power-user, and I fall into the 1% of phone users who push the hardware to the limits, and so yes, I need this phone.
Honestly, for me it was a combination of 1 and 2
I have both, and are both very good phones, but out of the two the SGS2 wins hands down, just by the slickness of it, no jerkiness when scrolling or playing HD games , and the extra size in display really does make a difference too !
Both are great phones. If you are planning to keep the phone for a while then I'd recommend the SG2 as dual core is not really being maximised at the moment but should do in the future but then hey we may get quad core phones. If audio is important to you then get the SG1 with the voodoo sound its one of the best mobile devices for audio playback the SG2 has a different sound card which is inferior.
You'll be happy with either, SG1 still has a good following, also check out the forthcoming galaxy plus.

I would say main reason for me would be 2). I want a device which going to be good in the following 2-3 years. But on the other hand SGS1 will be good as well I don't care about playing games.
What really makes me want buying SGS2 vs. SGS1 is the less lag and more ram - I care most about those things. People say SGS2 is much faster and less laggy.
Today I saw it and it's really huge, maybe even too huge
You can easily flash gingerbread 2.3.4 on the s1. No lag whatsover and a faster filesystem ext4. I have a 10 year old pc of similar hardware and dont see why the s1 is not goo enough for a few years. I used to have one before I lost it

Both are great phones, but at this time the SGS2 is the better option.
Sgs2 has hspa+. And there are spots in my country where i get this. The real usefullness of this phone will happen by next year where there will be lots of accesories. I plan to keep this for 3 years.

lol offcourse sgs2 no doubt on it !!!
I feel it's going to be a difficult decision
I have both. I wouldn't have either if Samsung didn't fix my GS1 for free, but it's clear i couldn't go back to it, it's either GS2 or nothing. The speed difference is massive and that's why my wife has the 1 and i have 2.
I came from the SGS and got the SGS II now. For me the kicker was the lag and overall smoothness. SGS II has zero lag on scrolling, browsing, and on opening apps. And it doesn't matter how many apps you have open. There is a huge huge difference in lag and smoothness between the two.

I have a sgs1 and I did some comparison tests with my neighbour's sgs2
The sgs1 got only 2 advantages:
The sound is superior even without voodoo tweaks...actually the sgs1 got the best sound of all devices I tested including some standalone MP3 players
The second advantage is the price that is going down exactly because of the sgs2
For all other features the sgs2 is better
I think I will wait for the next sgs (3?) device, hoping that it will have the wolson sound chipset again or better, since this is one of the main features for me (the sound)
«»
Edit: and with sgs3 I mean Hercules ??
Thx for advices!
Now after reading about amoled screens I started to worry about possible screen burn in after some time. I buy phone for 3+ years I would be very dissapointed if the screen won't last that long..
You gotta get your information sources straight man...
It make no sense what you are talking about...
I recently got the SG2 (replacement for a broken htc desire) and the phone feels so much better. My dad has the sg1 and i'd rather have the sg2. I reckon if you bought the sg1 and a mate of yours showed you his nice new sg2 you would be jealous.
I was jealous...till I went comparing the sound quality....
Now I will wait on the Samsung hercules, hoping it is going to have the Wolfson chipset back as the sgs1 has:
http://www.androidauthority.com/sam...-hercules-coming-to-t-mobile-in-august-14441/
So the price difference where I live is exactly 2x more for SGS2 than for SGS1. Do you think it's worth paying two times more?

Yeah yeah, I've seen the similar threads but they're not up to date especially with gingerbread released. I'm due for an upgrade on the 26th and want to get a new phone before college in mid August. I've posted a similar forum excluding the nexus on the gs2 forum, but I want to hear the other side. I prefer the 4" screen, but also want to root and not have motoblur, and I hear the phone lags when you do that. I realize the nexus s is single core but are dual cores that much faster with current software? I like longer battery life and an led notfier since I'm coming from a blackberry Curve. Can anyone say how the screens compare, I've heard the pentile display is terrible, but have yet to see for myself. Finally I'm told that the atrix does not have neon support, is that a difference for the average user? Thanks in advance.

I've had a nexus s and it does not lag at all, neither does my atrix. Single core or dual core it doesn't seem to make a difference to me. In my experience the atrix has better battery life. As far as the screens go that's a matter of opinion, the samoled seems more vibrant but is utterly useless in sunlight. As much as I hate BLUR, I chose the atrix over the nexus s and once we have an AOSP Rom I will have no regrets whatsoever.

I had the nexus s, it wasn't much of an improvement over my custom rommed Captivate, so I took it back. I was also looking forward to the Galaxy S2's release in America, until I got Gingerbread on my Atrix. There is no way the GS2 will be a substantial improvement over my Atrix now.
The Motorola Atrix was voted as the best phone at CES, and with Gingerbread it lives up to those accolades. Froyo and the ridiculous price of the lapdock killed this phone's initial release.
Take a look at the top results on Smartbench 2011, there is a reason Samsung delayed the GS2's release and overclocked it to 1.2ghz. Once the Atrix gets overclocked to 1.5ghz, those top results will change.

So will the battery life lol
Also, does the lack of NEON support make a difference for the average user?
EDIT: reread my post, thought I didn't include the question, reread it again, realized I did.

I was worried about lack of neon. But honestly it doesn't even matter at this point in time, apps don't even come close to making neon cpu make any difference whatsoever.
By the way, just got an atrix today! Found craigslist superb deal.

If you want to play normal or hi profile x264 it does.
Really annoying to have to re-encode to baseline x264. For xxxx's sake this phone can push 3D pixels like Samurai Vengeance II but can't handle HD video encoding, WTF.
I had nexus so and atrix together for two weeks. There is major performance difference between the two. Nexus s's 512 mb ram was the deal breaker for me, it was not enough. I think I'm spoiled by the 1gb ram.

well thats welcome news. I'll do some research. A really time consuming thing to investigate (encode, copy to phone, see if it plays, rinse and repeat)
I own both and I prefer the Atrix.
With an AOSP ROM this phone will scream.

I would stay away from the Nexus S. Ya, it's Raw Goog but the sub-par RAM, single core chip and cheap plastic construction just aren't worth it especially on a new contract.
I'm loving my Atrix on GB, rooted, de-blurred (Titanium freeze) and running Go Launcher EX. I experience no lag, web browser is lighting fast, GPS is the best I've experienced from a phone. That's my experience and opinion. Considering the timing of your upgrade I would suggest checking the SG2 out as it may be more to your liking. Some people like Sammy HW some don't (I personally hate it, especially their damn "Chin" design philosophy).
That said, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix, it's an excellent phone. I traded in my Inspire 4G at a loss and don't regret my decision one bit.
Oh, and DL/UL speed in Houston, TX I've been averaging 3.5mb down (6 max) and 1.3mb up (2.1 max). Inspire 4G never made it over 2.5 down (1 Ghz. w/ 768mb RAM). Atrix is on par with my friend's EVO 4G (Sprint WiMax, he avgs 2-3 but has a max he's gotten of 7 once) and another friend's T-Bolt (Verizon LTE, 5-6 avg and a max of 8). And yes processor and RAM do affect your up/down as it's partially determined by the amount of data your phone can process, another reason to stay away from the S at this point.

Might have been my thread. I apologize, but I was wrong. Even tough performance has increased substantially (from 8-10 fps to an average of 24) when playing high profile h.264, it still isnt perfectly smooth and, for some reason, the episodes of Game of Thrones were mute for me, which indicates a continuing lack of support to audio codecs. After converting it with the Handbrake method, it worked flawlessly.
@OP
The Atrix and the SGS2 have different offerings. SGS2 has a standardly overclocked processor, a bigger, brighter screen, less weight, and a GPU accelerated browser. The Atrix has a much higher pixel density, better battery life, and a specialized game store (Nvidia Tegra Zone which, despite the lack of titles in numbers, the ones it DOES have possess highly improved graphics over standard versions).
And for many of us, it has a lapdock, which is a perfect netbook replacement if all you do is work with word, excel, and light web browsing, being lighter and having better battery life than many netbooks. Its also fun like hell to play at customizing it
I like the overall build with the Motorola Atrix, but without the GPU accelerated and NEON support, would I be at a significant hardware disadvantage for everyday use? I feel I wouldn't. Also, any complaints about the screen?
Okay. Opera provides a gpu accelerated browser that is blazing fast. The screen is really nice, but you may notice grainy greens.
Edit: oh, neon support isn't an issue, at least for me. Most of my videos can be played using moboplayer.

The atrix also is not sized like a giant brick but weighing like a feather toy (the #1 reason I didn't go for the SGS2). Form factor wins for me. Not to mention in Australia, atrix is 150-200 dollars cheaper.
I would say though with froyo it is noticeably inferior. But that's no longer an issue, whether stock or unlock BL/custom ROM.
If you want a big screen and fast phone....sgs2, if you want sething new and try some mods atrix, if yu are a hard modder HD2

Now that there's actual photos of the AT&T galaxy family, would anyone consider it a superior choice? I kinda like the idea of a physical keyboard but I'm used to portrait like on my blackberry.
I've convinced myself that I would like to trade my x10 for an SGS. Is anyone here going to give me a reason not to?
Only plus with x10 is 8mp camera with 720p video recording.
What do you think?

The galaxy s is great, but comparing gingerbread and froyo, gingerbread runs laggier on the galaxy s occasionally either because of lack of optimization by samsung or because of lack of RAM (on froyo I'd have 180Mb of ram on boot and the phone runs smoothly for days while on gingerbread, I'd have 140Mb of ram on boot and the ram seems to get used up to 80Mb after a day's usage and the phone becomes laggy).
So, when Ice Cream Sandwich comes, my concern is that the 512Mb of RAM on the SGS might not be sufficient for it to run super smoothly.
But apart from that, the SGS is great, especially on 2.2.1 roms.
However, you might want to consider dual core phones like the SGS2 or the upcoming Nexus Prime.
Thanks for the reply. I'm just changing phones every couple of months getting a feel for different manufacturers as my upgrade is due in 6 months time.

Actually, HD video recording is better on the SGS!
At least that's what I saw when comparing to my cousin's X10.
better go for sgs 2 bro u get eveything

If you're only trading it like with a friend or stuff like that, just do it.
The SGS also records on 720p. Besides the CPU/GPU on the S is superior than the one embedded in the X10. At least for gaming it is.

That is one opinion! Running my SGS on XXJVS firmware with Voodoo kernel and ext4 filesystem is smooth an lag free. If you can wait a bit longer, wait for the S3....
don go for sgs....the choice is sgs2,moto droid, etc if uwana buy now but if u wanto wait abit , then wait for the 2ghz quad process......well iam waiting for one.cause my exp in using android is , like its open ground an more ghz,ram the better it b...for future proof...ive heard a hell of phones with high specs comming the end or mid 2012
I've had my SGS for a year now and I really like it. The customizations that can be done to this phone are incredible. It is fast and reliable.
I have actually watched movies on it when I had to wait for something. The screen is very nice, oh, did I say it was fast?
My only problem with my phone is the GPS is nonexistent. I have tried different fixes, but ruining stock firmware and not rooted, the GPS sucks.
I will be looking for another phone when my contract is up in a year and I do not know if I will return to Samsung.
Ian
SGS has a much better display, more ram, better multitouch technology, bigger battery, significantly better cpu/gpu, native divx support, wireless N tech and bluetooth 3.0 and prob a bunch more pros over the x10. the x10 has a slightly better camera, with flash, i kinda like the look better and thats about it.
So based on what I said, you decide
Kind of sounds like an SGS would be an improvement for now!
For the guys saying wait... I am due an upgrade soon so I'm just after trading maybe add a little money to it too. When my upgrade comes it will be whatever the latest and greatest device is in March 2012!
Ephumuris
yes do it either sgs1 or sgs2
I had an x10 and binned it for the sgs.
I am so happy that i did. The sgs is blazing fast compared to the x10 and there is tons and tons of development going on.
I dont miss anything about my x10 at all
I went from a wildfire to the sgs, I still miss the little bugger

Did you know that the SGS graphics can elaborate up to 90 millions of triangles per second?

I actually did the exact same thing after a month or 2 of using the X10...this was around same time last year. no regrets.
