you need to set the permissions right.

how do i do that?

Well when you use root explorer to copy the files to /system folder long press on one of the files and a menu will appear click on permissions and set like this: rw-r--r-- then you can move them to the right folders and all should be good
Sent from my R800i using XDA App

If you use adb to push the framework.apk and systemui.apk, there is no need to set permissions .... also you need to make sure the theme is compatible with the build you are using .... for example, if a theme is made for .143 build, it will never work on the .145 build ect

Here is where I'm at now, magic smoke live wallpaper installed fine but when I try to select it as my wall paper, it force closes. Not sured if I need another file. I then tried to install ocean waves, dandilion, and luminescence live wallpaprs but the installation failed on all 3 of those...
Any help is appriciated, thanks

Usually for me, I just copy the apk's into system/app, change the permissions, and reboot. Which apps are you trying to install?
Some apps will install im /system/app folder some will het fc's,and some apps will get fc's in regualar install but install fine in /system/apps folder.A tip:Sometimes an app gets fc when in system app folder however if you mod that file(change icon color, etc.) It will work fine!I dont know why that is maybe something to do with signature.
Moved to general as not development

Make sure you change the permissions of the files to match the permissions of other files in the system/app folder.

Help using Ninjamorph to change icon!!!

I am trying to change the Icon using Ninja Morph. I did exactly what the tread on "how to NinjaMorph" but it does not work.
It seems like I can change the color on the Icon's but it will not let me change out the Icon.
Here is what I did.
I start with New Project
go System than App
than I go the the app that I want to change the Icon
open Res, than Drawable-hdpi, tap the icon I want to change.
Than it opens a folders
I go to the folder with the Icon that I want to replace it with
I click on the Icon that I want use.
After that I exit
than I go to Finish Project,
It as me to confirm Action and couple of other question after.
I reboot the phone and the icon is not change.
What am I missing?
Note: I already did review the tread "how to ninjamorph" and it seem like I am doing everything correctly. The only thing is that the tread says that phone should reboot automatically and mine doesn't. I reboot manually.
When I change the icon color on "edit icon", it works fine.
By the way, I already have busybox installed.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
What's the app?

I tried many different app. One of the example is browser.

There are some system apps that just wont take. Does the app disappear from the drawer after you edit it? If not then its not taking the change. Be wsue youre changing the png as they normally have a couple pngs that look the same but only one is the icon.
Have you tried manually replacing them?
I tried many different apps. I can edit the icon by changing colors but it will not let me replace icon.

When I edit the icon, it would disappear but when I reboot the phone, app will reappear. The only thing is that I have to mount the app in the system. Once I edit the app it was not reinstall with app manager. In other words I have to mount the application directly into the zip folder for the system then reinstall the theme or the rom.

I've had some experience with ninja morph not always accepting my changes. After you open your project, use astro to go to sd/androidthemes/workspace. Copy paste the files using astro and then go to ninjamorph and finish the project. Then I use root explorer to paste the app in system/app. Install it (sometimes says fail but it works) then change the permissions and reboot. Just match the permissions list with any other app in system/app as they're all the same. Then reboot. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by changing the permission? Also, can you be little bit more specific with instructions? I am fairly new to all this.
Also, is there a way I can try to change the icons with my computer? Is there a program or an app out there that works like a Ninja Morph for the desktop?

I actually use picsay on the phone to make small edits to the icons. I then pull them from my sd to my pc to convert the jpeg back to png and insert them. But you can also use photoshop to edit images/create your own. Theg have to be the correct size.
I gave up. I just decided to use Better Cut. I never knew/realized you can customize icons on your phone with icon.

[Q] Timer on ASOP clock

On the normal clock there was a timer function. I dont see it anywhere on the asop clock thats part of super clean. Is there one? If not i guess ill just get an app for it but i used it alot so i remembered to feed my parking meter. Wife hates when i get parking tickets.
I love superclean but I had the same problem with the AOSP clock. So what I've done since the first one is open Rom Manager, click Download Rom, click Sonofskywalker3, then click Desk Clock and download the Stock Desk Clock and let that download.
I don't use rom manager to restart and install anymore because it used to boot me into a different recovery so I then restart into recovery using the button when you hold the power button and install the zip from SD card. It's a little tricky to find but you start in the Clockwork Mod folder. Find the zip for the clock and install it.
Also you may have to disable Voodoo to install, if you're on Voodoo, I know I did.
The clock will take over as your default clock but the AOSP clock will still be there.
Hope this helped!
I too prefer the stock clock over aosp. So you can do as was stated above or what I did was download it using clockwork then used astro file manager to find the zip. Open it
Then extracted the apk and replaced the aosp clock with stock.
I downloaded it from sonofskywalker and pulled the apk with root explorer and put it in system/app. Works great. Thanls guys.

How did you get permission to put in system/app with root explorer? I attempted that without success. I ended up doing an adb push.
Either way I agree the original clock is nice.

In root explorer there is a little button at the top that says mount r/o. I hit that so it switches to mounted as r/w, which i assume is read/write. R/O i assume is read only. This should allow you to do whatever you like in these folders.

[Q] editing framework-res.apk

Hey guys I need a bit of help..... I was trying to edit the drawables on my gf 's Eris in the framework-res.apk and when I recompiled the Rom and tried to flash my changes recovery tells me that the update script couldn't be verified due to framework-res.apk and aborts the installation.... what am I doing wrong? Do I need to sign this apk or something to make it work correctly? I did this on my Droid incredible the other day with no problem. I know there was another thread on this further down in Dec but unfortunately it didn't give me the answers I need...

I assume from reading your post that you updated the framework png's inside a Rom Zip package... You don't need to sign the framework, but you do have to resign the Rom Zip file. Try re-signing the rom file, that should get it working...

You can sign it using gnarlycs kitchen.
Edit: another thing you could have done is just pushed your modded frameworkres to its folder and rebooted the phone.

Sterricson Zip Signer, or get SignApkTool from the market and sign it on your phone... Just make sure you use the test-keys for the rom file...
I used zip signer from the market.... is there anyway I can use this to sign apk 's like HTC messaging and HTC IME so that I can edit drawables in those apps?

I use apk manager to decompile, compile, and sign apks. Unless I'm adding pngs I'm which case I use apktool. If your just editing or replacing what already exists apk manager is the easiest way in my opinion.

Those won't install...you need to push them to system/app and reboot. No need to sign them unless you resign a whole rom.zip

That's right.. thanks for adding that Conap. Also I was re-reading and just wanted to add as well that you don't want to unzip an apk to modify it and then zip it.. Use one of the other tools mentioned.. apktool or apkmanager

Also for pc 7zip works good also. Just right click the file 7zip open archive drop your png where you want it. Close the apk and push it to system/app or where ever it came from.
If your on ubuntu just click your apk and drop your pngs. You don't even need an apk tool.

That does work as well but doing it that way you will need to optimize the .9's if you change them also. xultimate works great for that.

I put this in the modding folder and used the script.bat file to extract the apk....I edited my files annd hit re zip apk and chose the option to retain signature for system apps. Then when I adb push back it seems to work fine but when I reboot browser doesnt show up in my app list!!!!! help please!!! where did I mess up? I even tried to zip align to see if that would fix it.....If I try to use coommand prompt to adb push the original browser.apk back into place it says error read only file system.....I'm locked out! ah!

To push the original browser, /system needs to be mounted as r/w which can be done with the command "adb remount"
As for the problem with the modded browser not showing up, try this:
Code:
adb shell chmod 644 /system/app/Browser.apk
adb shell chown 0:0 /system/app/Browser.apk
#now reboot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik-cache, and reboot
the string you typed for the modded browser....i type that into a normal command prompt not into apk manager correct? I tried to put my normal browser back with adb remount and it still doesnt show in my app list but if i look with a file explorer the apk is in the right place....why wont it show up?
OK i actually pushed my old browser successfully and it wouldnt show in my app list....I then followed your instructions and did adb shell chmod and chown and reboot wipe dalvik and cache and it still wouldnt show up. I really dont wanna have to flash a recovery image....
edit: If it has any importance this is actually on a droid incredible i was testing for my gf's eris. So idk if it changes anything that this is actually an inc.

You need to use a Root Explorer type app. There are 2 files in system/media that need to be replaced with the 2 boot animation files you want to use. The 2 files are: bootsamsungloop.qmg and bootsamsung.qmg.

I assume you meant "ROM Toolbox" because I don't see "ROM Toolkit" in the market. ROM Toolbox has dozens of bootanimations to choose from. If you see one you like, you should be able to install it within ROM Toolbox. It has been a while since I used it to change bootanis, but I think it was a pretty simple and self-explanatory process. If you want to change bootanis manually, you have to go to
/system/media and swap these files:
bootsamsung.qmg
bootsamsungloop.qmg
bootsamsungmini.qmg
bootsamsungminiloop.qmg
And set permissions to rw-r--r--

The boot animations in ROM Toolbox are in the bootanimation.zip format that need to go in either /system/media or /data/local folder. Unfortunately, with Samsung Touchwiz, the required format is the qmg format.
I'm not 100% sure how it is now, but it used to be that the kernel needed to support the bootanimation.zip format in order to be used (or a deeper system/framework support) Most AOSP based ROM/kernels have this support by default but TW doesn't allow this to work.
There's a thread in the theming section that has several of these files to use, but aren't of the greatest quality, IMO.
I used the international bootanimation files from this thread
