I moved the apk's I wanted to install into the system/app directory, changed the permissions, pushed the r/w button to remount the system and then tried installing the apps.
Here is where I'm at now, magic smoke live wallpaper installed fine but when I try to select it as my wall paper, it force closes. Not sured if I need another file. I then tried to install ocean waves, dandilion, and luminescence live wallpaprs but the installation failed on all 3 of those...
Any help is appriciated, thanks

Usually for me, I just copy the apk's into system/app, change the permissions, and reboot. Which apps are you trying to install?
Some apps will install im /system/app folder some will het fc's,and some apps will get fc's in regualar install but install fine in /system/apps folder.A tip:Sometimes an app gets fc when in system app folder however if you mod that file(change icon color, etc.) It will work fine!I dont know why that is maybe something to do with signature.

Make sure you change the permissions of the files to match the permissions of other files in the system/app folder.

Moved the htclockscreen.apk and the odex files from system/app with Root Explorer to get the stock froyo lockscreen going, but I need to restore the htc lockscreen. Moving them back didn't do anything, they're in the right place, but the system doesn't recognize it. I still have the stock froyo lockscreen. I mounted the system r/w, it just won't run as it should. I've even done a full system restore on my phone, no change there. Any suggestions?

Solved the issue, make sure you have the right permissions for both the htclockscreen.apk and htclockscreen.odex files, then reboot. Permissions should be rw-r-r. Thanks to g351427 for double checking that for me. I had it on the .apk, but forgot the .odex.
Not sure, but if its an apk, you should be able to find the lockscreen in application management. If so, clear default and see what happens.
The thing is, the lockscreen should be something way more imbedded into the phone than an apk, so your whole post doesn't really make any sense.
Same happened to me when I tried a different Sense Launcher. Something gets broken when you push files back. You would need to flash a ROM again, only catch is there is none. Good luck!

Found a thread in the Hero forums, apparently with the Hero you can flash it as an update. If I post the htclauncher.apk and htclauncher.odex, could someone make a signed zip? I'm at work, can't sign it myself here. I'll try flashing it, see if it works.

I was wondering if you are S-ON or S-OFF, and if you changed the permissions of the apk and odex after moving them back to the app folder.
Rsotbiemrptson
S-off, fully rooted. Ran fix_permissions from recovery, still no change.
Got a favor to anyone with Root Explorer, could you look at HTClockscreen.apk in system/app, long click it and hit permissions? What checkboxes are filled in?

rw-r--r--
Should be the same as all the other files in the app directory.
That's what I figured. I have both the apk and odex set to that, still nothing. Was planning on exchanging this thing, might be a problem.
****, nevermind, I did forget to change the odex file, I guess. HTC lockscreen is back. I switched the odex and rebooted, it's back up and running. Thanks g351427.
Sorry misunderstood your post.

How this you go about installing it ? Am assuming if you managed to delete it you must have rooted and got adb running or Root Explorer.
If you have root explorer and have placed the files in system/app the only issue I think you have is with the permission.
Mount as RW
Navigate to system/app , long press the mms.apk and select permissions, change the permissions to
Read Write
Read
Read
Now do the same for the other file, once your done check below your file description , the permissions should now be similar to the other files present there.
Mount as RO
Reboot,
hopefully it should work.
Cheers,
Vikram.

I think that only .apk will be needed. .odex exist after start of application, so I think that it is only some cashe/data file.
My mms.apk can try download here.

you need to set the permissions right.
how do i do that?
Well when you use root explorer to copy the files to /system folder long press on one of the files and a menu will appear click on permissions and set like this: rw-r--r-- then you can move them to the right folders and all should be good
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
If you use adb to push the framework.apk and systemui.apk, there is no need to set permissions .... also you need to make sure the theme is compatible with the build you are using .... for example, if a theme is made for .143 build, it will never work on the .145 build ect

yokone1,
We have seen this a number of times on both Go Launcher and ADW Launcher. This is a sure fix.
Download the attached file named AppWidgetPicker-1.2.3.apk copy it to /system/app then change
the permissions to Owner: Read Write, Group: Read, Others: Read. Do Not install the apk, just
move it and change the permissions. Next reboot, wait for the Kindle to upgrade and test Widgets.
Let me know if this solves your issue.
This worked perfectly, thank you so much! =)

I can copy it to my device into other folders, and when I then try to move it using ES File I get the notice can not move file. I am on a Mac and use Android file transfer but that can not get me directly to the system file... or I haven't yet figure out how. Can you help guide me?
P.S. I have also tried transferring directly via AirDroid and get a failed notice when trying to trf to system/app

Heather_A,
The folder /system/app is a secured folder, you need Root access to mount the folder:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117
If you have Root, you need to use either ES File Explorer or Root Explorer in Root Mode.
In ES File Explorer, you need to go into the Settings Menu, next the Root Settings Menu.
Click on all the options in Root Settings. Be sure to Allow the Pop up Superuser request.
Once you have Root, then look at the VERY TOP Left of ES File Explorer where it says Local.
Look to the Right of Local, it probably says /sdcard/Download. If this is the case, you need
to click on the Up twice until you see Local /. You are now at Root, from here you will click
on /system - Local now shows /system, next click on app, now you are at /system/app.
Does this help? Since you are working with the /system/app folder, it is critical to backup
the Kindle. Here is software that automates the Backup Process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888

Hey guys,
i did not root my kindle fire. I can use the ADW Launcher, but i cant use widgets. Nothing pops up after i press the widget button. So i installed the AppWidgetPicker. Now i can choose the icon and after that i can see all the widgets. Perfect i thought!
But when i try to choose a widget it tells me "widgetPicker closed" and nothing happens.
Is there anyone who can help me with this problem?:victory:

Root your device and your problem will be solved. There's almost no risk if you follow the instructions thoroughly

Another fabulously useful nugget of info on XDA-developers. Thanks so much. It is things like this that make that patronising and unfunny XDA sign-up video almost worth watching!
I'm having what sounds like the same problem on JB 4.1.1
Whe version of Android is on the Kindle Fire?
I have been running the v1.3.3.8 of ADW EX on Gingerbread (Atrix 4g) with flawless operation.
On my Jellybean v4.1.1 (Atrix HD), widgets are crazy. Static icons stay put, widgits disappear
and reappear all over the place.
Is the above fix likely to work for me on JB?
Thx
I am having a problem with the package installer on my Nexus 7. (Wi-Fi, 32 GB) I think I may have done something to it accidentally while browsing through the system files. I did click to install the installer itself out of curiosity, though, but I don't know if that could have any adverse effects on anything. I cannot install any apps, whether they're from the Play Store or an APK through a file explorer. I get error 406 when I try to download anything from the Play Store. (Except when I tried to update ES File Explorer. That worked fine... Every other app that I've tried will not update/ download.) When I try to install an APK, I get a message like, "There is no program to open this file." I had just rooted my Nexus after having it for nearly a year with the Motochopper root exploit, so the bootloader is still locked. I could still install apps, though, until after my first reboot. Could anybody identify the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you might have removed packageinstaller.apk thats in the system. you can fix it by getting the correct packageinstaller.apk from the interent and move it to the correct /system/app path and apply CORRECT permissions for it

It's still there. I think installing it with itself out of curiosity is what messed it up. It now shows up in the installed apps menu in Settings.

It doesn't seem that I am able to change permissions. I'm just going to back everything up and either flash a stock rom or another good rom. Thank you very much for your help anyways.
Same problem..
What do you mean about "changing permissions"? If you mean to change the file properties to -rw-r-r- then that didn't worked for me .. pls help!
