Can any Nexus One owners confirm that this is in fact true? I've heard mixed reports. PC Mag announced that T-Mobile rolled out the service Jan 5th, right before the Nexus One release http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/185916/tmobile_usa_finishes_upgrade_to_hspa_72.html
If you do have anything above 3.6M bps (the current ceiling) please state your speed and city. You can use the speedtest.net app from the market to verify.
I saw that too from a few different sources, I've tried on all 3 of my phones and haven't got over 1mbps yet, I saw people posting on the Nokia forums that they were getting 6mbps, I didn't see pictures to verify though. I'm in Folsom, CA with 3 bars and I'm getting 824kbps down and 205 kbps up right now on my Nexus.
I don't break 800kbits
Yeah my G1 is not getting it either, I thought maybe Nexus One would have it before they enable it for other phones...
People are confusing HSDPA with HSDPA+. HSDPA will get you up to around 700-800kbps. HSDPA+ will get you up to 3Mbps or so. T-Mobile just upgrade nationally from UMTS to HSDPA which goes from like 400 to 800 kbps, a decent improvement. Currently, only Philadelphia has HSDPA+ as the test market. Hopefully the rest of it will get it soon. All T-Mobile 3G smart phones have the hardware to do HSDPA and I think HSDPA+ as well, so you won't need a new phone when T-Mobile activates it on the towers.

Just did a series of 5 speed tests of a 1MB file via a local server from different points in my downtown Seattle office. Gots download speeds of 256, 700, 768, 1119, and 1330kbps. Tried the speedtest.net app with various endpoints and got 1694kbps as my best download and 434 as my best upload.
Will try again from a different location downtown later tonight.

Where do you live? If not in Philadelphia, are you sure you turned off WiFi?
I had a good number of 1500+

Seattle, WA. Double-checked, wi-fi is off. Just had a coworker with a G1 produce similar results.

Sweet deal then, perhaps T-Mobile is still slowly lighting it up one city at a time. Still only 600kbps here in Pittsburgh
kbps and kB/s are different. 1000kbps is 125kB/s, making it about 2/3 of your low end DSL connection.
Also, jimbo831, you're mistaken. T-Mobile has been on HSDPA/HSUPA since the rollout began, and everywhere in the nation had 3.6mbit potentially available. Realistically, no one got this. They just flipped the switch to 7.2mbit HSDPA (which is NOT HSPA+ that's in testing in Philadelphia, as that is 21mbit).
I'm seeing speeds of about 1.2mbit since the switch, compared to .5 before the switch in Atlanta, GA.

Well, I'm just using information that has been reported by TmoNews. And I don't think HSDPA is active everywhere then, or it is just slow as molasses here in Pittsburgh because my phone is still only running at 600kbps, which is only about 100kbps faster than I remember during my last speed test a few weeks ago.
Edit: I have verified otherwise. I checked the "Status" on my G1 and it only reads UMTS. So it looks like T-Mobile has been on UMTS, and still is here in Pittsburgh. I guess once I get HSDPA, my speeds will go up.
I just checked my phone is Oklahoma City and it showed HSDPA instead of UMTS under phone info. Cool!
Can someone tell me what's wrong with my testing results?
1st test: down - 450ish, up - 45...
2nd test: down - 550ish, and wtf.. up - 6 kbps -___-
These are all in kbps btw.

I noticed in certain areas of Philadelphia where I live that speeds can be about 1 mbit a certian towers and 3.5 at others. At the slower locations it says hsdpa too. On my nexus at the locations it said hsdpa but umts on my g1. When I can see the speed differennce it clearly shows that tmobile has not completely upgraded their network. I think we Need to call and complain

Does this mean that the G1 doesn't support HSDPA, that it shows UMTS regardless of which 3G you're on, or if it just happened to click off HSDPA for that moment? I thought for sure when the G1 came out they said it was an HSDPA compatible phone.
Does the boost only effect 3g or Edge aswell?
Unfortunately there's no 3g in my area
Although I find PC World a reliable source, I think they meant to say AT&T. Here are three separate sources confirming AT&T with their HSDPA 7.2 rollout. And by the looks of other's speed tests, it isn't true for T-mobile.

Not actually done yet
Some cities got the green light but tmobile never actually made a press release I guess.
To clear up some misunderstandings:
For data transmissions (All speeds theoretical);
GPRS = 2G
EDGE = 2.5G
UMTS = 3G
HSUPA = A UMTS protocol/specification with speeds up to 5.76Mbit/s
HSDPA = 3.5G UMTS protocol/specification supporting speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2(T-Mobile's latest upgrade) and 14.0 Mbit/s.
HSPA+ = 4G UMTS protocol/specification currently defined up to 56Mbit/s with potential of higher bandwidth. T-Mobile plans to start rolling this out mid 2010 with 21Mbit/s speeds.
byte = 8bits
Bandwidth is usually measures in Mbit/s(Megabits) where as download speed is measured in KB/s(Kilobytes). Divide your Mbit/s by 8 and you will have your download speed. So if speedtest says d/l bandwidth is 800Kbit/s then a file download would be approximately 100KB/s.
Alright now lets keep this thread on topic please and post only if your bandwidth is above 3.6Mbit/s which is the current theoretical limit in T-Mobile's network.
What type of download speed are you getting using your Hero? My download speeds seem to peak at about 700Kb/s when the phone states I'm getting an EVDO signal. Is this all I should expect?
This has been true with the stock rom and the current 2.1 ROM I'm using RegawMOD2.0.2p.
Thanks...
-TL
Are you getting a EVDO signal or EVDO Rev A?
That sounds right for EVDO, but slow for EVDO Rev A.
Also was that in a moving car or standing still? Mine's always slower in a car that's going at normal driving speeds.
i get about 1500 most of the time... if i have low signal i get around 700-900
phone says "EvDo Rev.0" I've never seen it say anything else, always in and out of NYC and live in the Northern NJ area.
-TL
all i know is it's fast as hell.
My peak rev a speed was 1.8 mb download avg about one meg though
Yep, sounds about right. I live in an area where sprint rents towers from ntelos wireless, and theirs tends to be about that slow... It really depends on who owns the towers, how many people are using them, signal strength, etc...
However my friend has a evdo rev A phone on US cellular, who owns their own towers in this area, and he gets 1.5-3mbps regularly! I really wish sprint would have rented from them in this area, but whatever, my bill is less than his by a lot.
My peak is 2.5mbps, and I average about 2.2-2.3 at my house. I've seen as low as 700-1.2 in some areas.
Based on the speedtest app my rev A normally gets around 700-800 kbps. I have seen it go as high at 2 mbps at like 3am on a sunday night. Even when the speedtest app says I'm getting 700 kbps if I use wifi tether and go to something that is data intensive it gets above 1 mbps. I turned hulu on through wifi tether and it was keeping a steady 1.5 mbps. That's plenty for me until I get an EVO anyway.
Mine fluctuates depending on where I am. The fastest download speed i got was 2.3Mbs. But usually it is around 1M or so.
It really depends on how many people are using the towers at that given time. I get alot better speeds late at night when most are sleeping.
All I know is I have the lowend dsl package here because it was $10 a month when I signed up and get download speeds upto 780kbs. If I'm downloading a huge file(ROM's,programs) I usually tether my phone because it will usually get twice the speed I get on my dsl.
What! I average about 250kbs, 500 on a good day
I average 1.2 Mbps

Then my question is should my phone say EVDO rev A or rev 0?
For those of you getting higher than 760Kb/s does your phone report rev.A?
Also I seem to recall some discussions early on about Rev.0 and Rev.A and that the Rev.0 indication was incorrect (according to Sprint) and should have been fixed by a software upgrade.
I just upgraded my radio to 2.42.00.03.10 my PRI is 1.68_003.
So what's the scoop?
Thanks,
-TL
Well, I live in a small town west of Hilton Head Island, SC and I get (on average) 2.3 meg down and 0.80 meg up which seems pretty good considering less than a year ago we didn't even have EVDO in the area.
Also, I am on EVDO Rev. A.

My phone always said Rev 0 until I flashed fresh 2.0d. My progression of roms was stock -> fresh 1.0/1.1 -> DC1.0 -> Fresh 2.0d. All besides the current one said rev 0. I was on stock radio for all of it so it wasn't a radio change. I tested my speeds before and after each Rom and the avg with speed test didn't change at all. I think the rev 0 is really just a typo.
I'm in Rev A. coverage, but right next to a mall. I get about 750kb/s on average.
EvDO Rev A, brand new radio from another thread on this forum:
101.0 kB/s, 77.2kB/s
Using speedtest.net app on htc hero.
I used to get around 140kB/s on the old radio (stock)
ETA: This was for the server in Radnor, Ohio. I changed it to Clarksville, TN and I got 130.6kB/s, 76.4 kB/s
EVDO - avg speeds
I live in Tampa area. Rev A - I avg between .5Mb and 1.5Mb, but I test as high as 2.5Mb(this is from speedtest.net app) - If I wireless tether I consistantly pull between 1Mb and 3Mb testing from lots of sources.
evdo
When i am at home i get 2.5 meg and 500k upload. I have a 5 bar signal here though.
My hero says evdo rev 0
with 4 bars on my hero....

I ran tests with speedtest.net but I don't know enough to understand the results. Can someone point me to a good reference on EDGE/3G/wireless speeds? Or, just tell me, what do you think of these numbers. Is this slow, fast, average or what?
I'm in SF and chose the SF server:
3G Down: 979
3G Up: 1323
Wireless Down: 4402 kbps
Wireless Up: 3175 kbps
My 3g speed is actually better than your wireless speeds. Your location and of course how much the 3g network is being used in your area by others will contribute to slower speeds. But that still does seem fairly slow for 3g, maybe high traffic bogging down the network at the time you tested? Have you run any other tests?
I haven't run any other tests. Can you recommend any other tests?
Also, just for context, I ran the test from inside an old apartment building in a dense neighborhood between 8p and 10p.
that's pretty terrible
I get about 3.7meg consistantly down, 600k up in bentonville arkansas
speeds are alot lower than what i see in seattle, but on par with what i saw in most of O and Ca on a recent road trip.
I meant another speed test using the speedtest.net app, that would probably be the one of the worst times to run a test probably when theres the highest traffic. Just be sure you have a good signal when you run tests.
I just ran two more tests with speedtest.net, 10p PT. This time I made sure I had a decent signal (didn't pay attention last time).
3G up: 2226
3G down: 597

Honestly, the speed/performance has never bugged me or caught my attention because it was slow. But, what I'm gathering here is that I'm getting some pretty ****ty speeds, comparatively.
In Chicago we are only getting 1mb down 600-850 up....pisses me off...if tmobile doesnt raise it I need to consider att or sprint galaxy s....store claims speed in Chicago way behind rest of network and will get much better...i dont know if I can trust tmobiles network...is 3 mb common on tmobile 3g hspa like I have seen a few people claim in nj

I'm in the Suburbs of Seattle and I'm getting nearly 6mb/s download speed all the time.
I was looking for a thread to see what kind of speeds people are getting on 3g, 4g, and wifi. I could not find one for the epic (also I wanted to see with ec05). I will downlod speedtest tomorrow so please post your speeds. Thanks
At home, 3G usually pulls about 1800-2000 kbps Download and 760 average upload.
On WiFi, I get between 6,000 kbps to 15,000 kbps (depending on server.)
On 4G, I mostly get 1200 mbps (yes, very slow), but in certain areas, I can get up to 8000 kbps and upload is maxed out @ 1000 kbps on 4G.
EDIT: When I get my phone, I'll grab you some screenshots.

I'm in Anaheim Hills, and connect to the LA server as well. If I'm up in Brea on 4G, it's up in the 8-9mbps range. I think I'm on the outer area of the tower's reach. Voice still works, which is all I care about when I'm at home.
I had been getting 3g speeds anywhere from 1200 down and 400 up but the last few days I gave gone down to 200 down and 100 up on average using speedtest. In Memphis tn. Using slingplayer however it s streams great so I am thinking speed test is screwy. If I can stream video at hd quality it can't be that low

Nope, I've got MidNIGHT rom v5.2 and it's by far the most stable. You can try to reflash the ROM, but I think it's just that 4G signal in your area is poor.

This is inside my house. Which I can't even send a text with where I am right now. I have to use roam control in my house. Go outside and on the west side, get about the same speeds. Walk out to the street, maybe 30 yards(very rural/suburb/country area) 3g goes way up. I can start grabbing 4g but not reliable. But also just standing without moving my phone will constantly go up and down from full service to no bars.
A week or so ago I was at a friends apartment. He has the Evo. We both tested the 4g and he was over 10m while I was around 7m. And my 4g would drop as I was using the web, but his held it strong.
I've just given up on 4g. Most the time I want it I probably have wifi, and the other times the 3g is fast enough to load whatever while I'm still waiting for the 4g to get out of bed.
If I remember I'll try to grab some more tomorrow.

Are you sure that you're not being throttled for going over your data cap? Those speeds are super low. Like the other reply I regularly pull 8mbps down and 3mbps up.
Sounds like your over your cap. No other reason that should be happening unless you have no bars and are in a basement.

No, that's not throttled speeds. I was throttled and consistently got around 0.07 Mbps down and up.
I can see these 8 Mbps down speeds being plausible if you live in a metropolitan area, but if you live out in the middle of nowhere like me, the best download speed I have gotten is around 3 Mbps, but typically around 1.3-1.5 Mbps.

I see my best speeds in the suburbs, with fewer users. My slower speeds happen in places like Seattle with tons of people on the network obviously. I believe just a generally slow area giving 1.5mbps ish, but there's something wrong when he's getting only 0.40mbps
I am now testing in the suburbs as I'm visiting home from college.
Also keep in mind signal also plays a large role. I was just downstairs where my signal was -103 dBm, and my download speed was about 1.8 Mbps. Just went upstairs, signal was about -89 dBm and download speed was about 4.0 Mbps (measured twice at each location). Interestingly, both were with UTMS connections.
Wow, -103! The phone has no connection at -113! Eek.

That's not even OP... you're referring to the post above yours? He's aware of the lack of signal, which is why he's quoting it and saying that even at -103 he gets 1.8mbps.
