Drop Box/Online Storage - Acer Iconia A500

Not sure if you guys have used this but Ive found it pretty handy for online storage. Called drop box, you get 2Gb free and can upgrade and get more if you need it!

Right. And by clicking that referral link above, both parties get a little extra space.
It's a pretty popular online storage / file sharing service and along with the DropBox Android app, a great extension for storage on tablets.

Indeed, so far loving it!

Another online storage tool is Spideroak. It works across many platforms including Android and Linux. I am still in the process of testing it out. Not quite as intuitive as Dropbox. But I used the promo code *worldbackupday* and got a free upgrade to 5GB of storage. Not bad.

I'm using ubuntu one for my tablet and pc with ubuntu
Wysłane z Acera A500

Just trying out Asus Web Storage. It has a very cheap option for unlimited storage.... Tempting!

I personally can't think of any use for these online storage systems. It would be okay if you could mount them and then have all your applications be able to access the files there directly, but if you always have to copy stuff back and forth first then... meh.

Well the great thing about DropBox is that it integrates into windows just like a regular folder.
Once you've installed the application (which has a very small footprint) you can use the Windows 'Send To' context menu option and send anything to the DrobBox folder on your computer and it syncs with the account, making whatever you put in there available from any web-connected device. (either in a public or private folder which you can also set up)
You can also setup shared folders between people/teams which has a semi-type check-in/check-out feature that shows when others are working on them. So, say I'm working on a design doc - I can open it directly from my DropBox folder (since its a regular windows folder) make changes, edits etc, save it and it syncs the new version with anyone else I'm sharing the folder with.
As far as the tablet goes, it really is an extension to storage but only in a minimalist sense. Launching the Android App shows you all your DropBox folders and you can navigate though folders and open files or download them to your tab (without having to mount the tab to your computer or do that SD card dance). The primary point being, you can access them directly from the DropBox app and not actually have them on your tab.
I use it mainly to store books and other documents (also my bootanimations and screenshots) so when I want to access them (or give access to them) I can share the link, or open the files directly on my tab - make changes, save and it saves to DropBox.
It really is flawless and elegant.

It's also entirely reliant on people and systems over which you have no control. It can fail without warning, just because something between you and their servers goes wrong, and you have zero assurance of security either.
I hate the "cloud". I think it's stupid, pointless and potentially downright dangerous. You have zero control over your data or who has access to your data.

What.are.you.talking.about?
All that reads like over sensitive hyperbole and paranoia to me.
You're suggesting that just because you have files in your DropBox folder that it's unsecure?
Anything can fail without warning - that's hardly an ongoing and preventative concern of mine. I could turn on the light in my bathroom and *might* pop and yet, here we are. I'm not about to take a flashlight in with me every single time *just in case*.
Your HDD can fail. Your CPU can pop. Your MB can short... I mean, what are you expecting? Putting files on DropBox is no more unsecure than burning it to a DVD or copying it to a Flash drive or leaving it on your HDD.
There are *levels* of security and DropBox is far more secure than you give it credit. If security is a serious concern of yours, turn off the internet.
And regarding the cloud. See paragraph 2.

That's the whole point why I don't like these kinds of things: it's cumbersome if I always have to go through this or that application first in order to use a file. It should just be mounted on a specific directory and that's that. I can only hope someone will create something like that for Android soon.
I wonder though if there is any way of mounting SSH connections, like for example as through Fuse as is possible on Linux. Then I wouldn't have to worry about these kinds of things at all as I have ample amounts of storage space on my server.

The company I work for, one of the largest IT corporations in Europe, SELLS cloud services. I know what I'm talking about.
Your files are not secure, no matter the assurances you're given, and Dropbox has had some pretty major security flaws in the quite recent past. And as a recent screwup on Amazon's cloud services recently showed, if something goes wrong or some dumbass makes a mistake, you might not even get your data back intact. That sort of thing happens a lot more often than you think, too.
Hell, we sell the bloody services to the world, but our own internal network services are down more often than a whores knickers!

I'm not sure how you can suggest it's cumbersome if you haven't tried it. Open the DropBox application, navigate to a file and select it and it opens in whatever app you have it set to open. They only different between than and opening a native application and then finding the file you want to open and opening it is that using the DropBox method, the file has to be downloaded first - which maybe is a thing for you, I don't know.
If you want it on your tab, select the file and download it - it saves to the local DropBox folder and at that point you can access it locally like any other file. The only other option is to manually put the file on your tablet - via cable, SD card, email - whatever method you see fit. To me, *that's* cumbersome.
Like I said, DropBox is more about access than storage. People use DropBox because they want access to files over the web in the same manner they would over a home network (without using bloated VNC's and multiple programs). If you have no need for such a function then DropBox doesn't sound like something you'd use.

It doesn't differ at all from opening file manager, navigating to samba share and downloading a file from there. That's why I said I'd like something that allows me to mount the whole thing as a regular directory on my tablet, THEN it would be useful. Like for example, the eBook reader I have shows as a collection all the books I have. If the cloud storage was mounted on a directory I could just point the eBook reader to that directory and POOF, they'd all be visible and accessible without having to copy anything back-and-forth.
Unfortunately there seems to be no such service for Android. Atleast not yet :/

Look, I'm not bashing DropBox. I just voiced a wish for additional functionality. I already have DropBox-like functionality via file manager and browsing to either Samba-share or SFTP-share, with 2Tb storage, on my own server, but if I could just mount the thing on a directory it'd be a lot, LOT more useful.

[CAUTION] Windows VIRUS in sdcard

I really want to share my experience with other users here and warn everybody for this, because I wouldnt be able to locate any information after several searches in ggle. This may be a big security hole in the Android OS. Be patient and read till the end.
Yesterday I purchased my brand new SGT-P1000 (fmw:XXJK5, FROYO.XWJJ7). After playing around with the browser to check its Flash capabilities, I decided to play a little with the backround wallpapers as I wanted to design a custom one.
The way to upload images to SGT to test 'em, was through a USB mass storage connection, after having set the appropriate option in SGT's settings. After having done this 1 or 2 times, all of a sudden I saw IE windows starting to pop up in my WinXP desktop. This was strange cause I never use IE as my main browser. A quick view in task manager revealed 2 or 3 running processes with strange names and some files (executables) in file expl. windows dissappeared. I quickly understood that Im under a virus attack and under panic I shutted down windows and started thinking ways to overcome the situation.
I planned to turn on the PC once again to better understand the behaviour of the virus. So I did ... The strange processes had now different names and as I was able to issue a regedit command and navigate to CurrentVersion\Run keys (there are two of them, one in HKCM and one in HKCU key), I noticed a strange autorun entry pointing to some file in TEMP directory. Then I tried to open the services tab by issuing a 'services.msc' command. The result was an IE warning that the page could not be displayed due to ActX restrictions. So there was no way to figure out the registered processes in my machine. The fear to loose my data multiplied, so I decided to switch off, take the drive out and move it to an another machine in the office. So I did and after carefull examination of the folders and with little help of an antivirus program, I figured out the location of the malware files and got rid of them. Their location was in the TEMP folders of the machine, in my personal folder under 'Documents and Settings' and in the Windows folder (not system32). I dont remember what their names were, but as I told before, they were able to change 'em between reboots. My main observation was that the icon of two of the executables was the famous red Adobe Flash icon.
I took the disk out and put in the original machine, rebooted and the strange processes had gone, but I still couldnt see all my files in explorer windows, whereas in the other machine I was able to see em (and that was a great relief, cause I understood that nothing was deleted). Then I realized that the virus had changed security permissions for the local machine by inserting a key under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones, which after deletion and rebooting brought the system back to normal again. Then with the help of the SYSINTERNALS utilities, I was able to locate the spots where the virus tried to regenerate himself. These were in 'Sheduled Tasks' (2-3 jobs there), in processes (1 registered process) and in autorun (as I told before).
So, my thought was, that browsing around through many sites trying to find a custom wallpaper for my SGT caused the attack. But I didnt want to believe that, cause I use FF for browsing loaded with many add ons for safety and security.
Anyway ... I was happy that I could overcome the situation, I turned off the office pc and I arrived home to continue playing with my SGT. Playing around with SGT's and AndExplorer file manager, I browsed to the sdcard folder, where to my surprise, I saw that it contained 2 exe files with strange names (I remember one of them: koubuu.exe) and the same Adobe Flash red icon I noticed in my infected disk. There were also up to 10 .lnk files (shortcuts in windows systems) and a autorun.inf file and a x.mpg file.
If you were able to read with caution up to here, you may begin understand what the cause of evil was. No browsing to strange sites in the PC, nothing to do with the PC at all ... The cause was the browsing in the SGT (to realize that flash was performing well). During that playing some f***ing script run and placed these files in the sdcard mount. Of course this could not harm the functioning of the SGT at all, but when plugging to a windows machine (under mass storage) the autorun.inf activated and run the exe files, which in turn place themselfs under different names of course to several places in my machine.
Im not a security expert, and Im not saying that the virus came up to my sdcard folder due to flash's capability of the SGT, but as an experienced user and a software engineer from 1996, Im writing this to warn users and developers here, to be VERY VERY carefull with SGT's browser cause it's for sure that it lacks security. Another thing to mention is that as an iPhone user (which I was), I would've never faced a situation like this.
Anyway ... it just screwed my first 'hand on' to SGT and waste almost a night without sleep ...
Beware of Android ... it was developed very very fast as a cheap Apple/iOS competitor.
So you can imagine what the last means !!! It still needs much more work and effort.

Anyway stock browser sux I never used it, and I think google and samsung are aware of browser issues. Hopefully we will see updates or next os.

Which browser do U propose for the SGT ?
I personally use skyfire which is an amazing browser. Dolphin HD comes highly recomended as well.
First of all: I am not an IT-Pro but the issue seems to be different. My idea is that the files havw not been initially on the sdcard but came indeed from browsing unsafe websites with your computer. Often Viruses protect and spread themselfs in the way that they copy themselfes to any mass-storage and/or nas attached to the infected computer. Maybe that way the virus went onto the sdcard. So I guess that it was not the SGT's fault. Sorry for bad english...

Wi-fi file sharing

Hi, how can i transfer files PC>TRANSFORMER or TRANSFORMER>PC via WI-FI?
thanks for answering...
i'm interested two...
also would like toknow if a good upnp soft exit without needing multiple tools like upnplay and moboplayer...
Try AndSMB.
Also if you have a kernel with cifs support, you can use cifs manager to mount your windows shares, so that you can directly open your shared files without copying them.
There are a few ways to do this.
The first is to use SwiFTP. This makes the transformer behave as an FTP server, then you can explore files on it using an ftp client from your computer.
The second is to use your computer as an FTP server and use AndFTP to explore files on your computer to move files onto your tablet.
I use both all the time, and they work really well.
Cheers.
I use ES File Explorer (free from Android Market) on my Transformer (and before that, my GTab).
It supports browsing of FTP and LAN. So as long as you know how to set up shares on your windows PC, you can access those directories from your T.F. and copy / paste / install APK straight from your PC.
or install File Manager HD.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm.hd&feature=search_result
and you can browse files on your pc from the Transformer (once you have shared them in windows.) and set up the connection in File Manager HD.
You can then copy and paste them as if they were on the same machine.
It will ask for login details, these are:
your computers network ip address eg 192.168.0.2,
your log on which is the name you use to log into windows with,
and a password, again, this is your windows password.
You will need to install Windows Media Player 11 or higher and add the shared directories to your 'library' then they will show up on the shared network using UpnP or SMB.

I originally tried that. But, for whatever reason, it wouldn't see my "shares" across my network whereas ES File Explorer did.
Also, File Manager HD has advertisements. ES File Explorer doesn't clutter up your screen with ads. Unless of course you are rooted and have ad blocking software installed on your TF.

This and "my cloud" are really simply and easy solutions that i also prefer, however they are not really wifi, or your home internal network. They require moving the data up over your broadband access and back again. If you have a large broadband monthly rate who really cares i guess but it seems kind of silly to push it up and back again. But at the same time i do't really trust free services like drop box to snoop over my stuff if not to just sell my habits or likes and dislikes to potential sales.

As for Dropbox, want to keep my files where they are, not put them in a special Dropbox folder. Also, having read somewhere that the only thing stopping Dropbox employees accessing your storage space is trust (ie no specific security measures stopping them from snooping), not sure I really trust that service!!

My experience setting up Atrix file and folder security

I was considering storing financial and personal information on my phone in the form of files and realized that though the fingerprint scanner is ok to prevent the casual browser from logging into the phone when it is left unaccompanied, a real hacker could easily see whats on there with very little effort.
The Atrix on the face of it looks like a secure phone with the fingerprint reader; however XDA users would know that nothing prevents a thief from entering fastboot and mounting the files and folders to see whats on there. No security app can prevent that.
Using the android built-in option and encrypting the entire sdcard is NOT an option for me at this time. I think its going to slow down the phone operation if the OS files are encrypted and each time it needs to decrypt each and every file and folder. Also it may present issues when testing new ROMs. (And I am dual booting - so my extSD also has a ROM which I would not want to slow down anymore than it already is)
So I searched for methods and apps to encrypt individual files or folders on the Atrix. There are quiet a few in the market and a few are free as well with good reviews. However most -even the ones with the best reviews seem to be just changing the file name and location and not doing real encryption. Also most of these use proprietary algorithms or methods to hide information. A really good app would be one that uses an open source algorithm to encrypt the files and folders - so that the algorithm would be tested and verified as being strong by the world.
Also another requirement was for the ability to frequently sync and update the files on the phone with the PC. The app should have a PC equivalent - that is the file can change on my PC and then I should be able to sync the changed file with the phone in some automated way.
Yet another requirement would be the ability to quickly encrypt and decrypt huge audio or video files. A few good apps could encrypt small audio and video files but not files of size 1GB or more. The apps would either freeze after some time or not encrypt them at all.
Finally I was looking for an option by which the files if I unencrypt them to be available across all apps for the duration of that session - not just in the app that encrypts and decrypts them. So in other words, once I enter the password, the folder should be mounted and available in any app that can browse the phone - until I decide to end or unmount the encrypted store.
I found only Cryptonite doing all of this. Unfortunately Cryptonite does not support Truecrypt containers on Motorola phones. There is some info here on the truecrypt port to android here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872297&page=7
However I could not get it working with the Atrix. Has anyone had success getting Kryptonite and Truecrypt to work on the Atrix?
Cryptonite also supports Dropbox, but I am not a big fan of storing sensitive info in the cloud - however well known the company is.
Cryptonite does support encFS and I was able to successfully create encFS encrypted folder on my Atrix. I would have liked to have TrueCrypt than encFS, just because I have been reading that Truecrypt has better overall support.
The method I use now for storing and synching encrypted information is:
for the first time only: create the encfs folder on the PC, then mount Atrix as a USB drive and copy the encrypted folder to Atrix.
To sync the encrypted files with the PC, I have to connect the Atrix as USB drive, open EncFS on the PC and select the folder on the Atrix to mount as a drive volume. Also mount the PC encFS folder as another drive. Now sync with the PC using any sync tool like MS SyncToy.
I went through a lot of searching and came to this which I think is good enough at the moment. I would like to hear if anyone else has a better app or method to secure and sync secured files on the Atrix - especially if you have got Truecrypt to somehow work on the Atrix. And I post this so that is anyone else needs this information, it is here.

I don't know about the rest of it, I never used any strong security on my phone nor do I intend to, but I think you shouldn't ever expect to be able to "quickly encrypt and decrypt huge files". You're pretty much asking for impossible here. It's like asking to build a full-featured house, furnished and all, in 30 minutes or less. A lot of data will always require a lot of time to process. Heck, even, say, straight plain copying such a file to a computer would take quite a while.
No.
Your not going to get business class security on your atrix, or any current phone most likely.
LUKS manager is the closest thing to legitimate encryption (not gimicky BS) i have seen, but it has some fatal flaws.
Passwords and such are safe and easy to store with KeePass, which is also on windows/linux for syncing and has years of reputation (also free/open source). It isnt for files though.

Replacement for Dropbox

I understand Dropbox will require Android 4.4 in the near future. I have used Dropbox on my Nook for several years to transfer CoolReader bookmarks to my PC.
Is there an alternative to Dropbox?
If you use ES File Explorer, you can connect it to a remote cloud storage via webdav (e.g. an owncloud instance: a few providers here)
Not as slick as dropbox, but certainly more stable than the DropBox proprietary syncing solution.

Much obliged.
The good news is my old Dropbox app still works on the NST, albeit with only two other devices. Not so convenient.
The bad new is I cannot use Google's My Drive through ES File Explorer, probably because I didn't root with the Gmail option: thought I'd never need it. I have tried a few Dropbox alternatives but finding old versions of these apps that work with Android 2.1 isn't easy.
Have others found a replacement for Dropbox for their aging NST?

I'm not sure what this means. Are you trying to use the same version of Dropbox on newer devices and seeing problems or...?
When I checked the app recently I found it worked OK in the typical way, sharing an epub between my NST and PC, but perhaps the requirements of CoolReader are something more.

No, Dropbox is entirely adequate for file transfer between my Nook, Desktop PC, and 10" tablet. That adds up to the limit of three devices Dropbox now permits. However, I also transfer files between the Nook and the following devices:
another Desktop PC
a Chromebook
a 7" tablet
and two mobile phones.
With the new Dropbox limit, these transfers are no longer possible.
There are Dropbox alternatives, such as Google Drive, for all of my devices except the Nook. Hence I'm hoping for an alternative to Dropbox that will run on the Nook.

Well, wow. That's a lot of electric sheep to ride herd on.
Modding the only Google Drive app that will run on Eclair looks hopeless. When I ran up the line I could not even get versions targeted for KitKat to access my drive on a KitKat device. They kept saying they were too old. So by the time I would find one it would be so different from the Eclair version I could never reconcile the differences.
Cool Reader.....I thought it might have access to Google Drive but when I installed the version that runs on my NST on a KitKat device (since I was still fooling with that) I could not find anything about sync at all (although there was a .crsync file in the "Books" folder). Maybe I just missed it? I confess I find Cool Reader's scattered settings a little disconcerting so it's possible I missed it.
FBReader pulls off the Google Drive interface on the NST by passing the request through their own servers which you give access to a dedicated folder on your Drive. Then the data is passed back to you via their servers. A neat trick as long as you trust them.
Unless Cool Reader does something similar, Google Drive looks like a "NO" option.

Tab A 10.1 (2016) - How to adopt SD as an internal or use ADB?

I pulled out my old Tab A 10.1 (2016) and forget just how ridiculously limited this thing is with space. I did some searching and found out that I should be able to use the "Format as Internal" feature, but the feature is nowhere to be found. The android version is at 8.1 Oreo, so it should at least be capable, but I can't tell why the actual button/feature is missing. Another method I'm seeing is by using ADB from the PC. the idea is fairly straight forward, and yet, not. I opened adb through cmd line. But the next step I'm supposed to do is enter sm list-disks to list my USB connected devices. But when I enter it, nothing happens. The command isn't among the list of commands brought up when you enter adb. So... I have no clue where to go next.
I just want my 256gb micro sd card to become the main/"internal" drive for my galaxy Tab A, so that all updates, apps, images, et, are saved, downloaded and installed on the SD card by default.
Not recommended. It will slow it down and may end up crashing it, losing data in the process.
Use the SD card as the data drive.
Internal memory is for the OS, loaded apps, the temporary download folder. The DCIM folder can go on either drive preferably the data. There can only be ONE DCIM folder on the device!
Always redundantly backup critical data to at least two hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.

I appreciate it. I didn't realize it'd affect speed. But ... the issue is that the tablets only has 16gb internal. Half the apps I install cannot by move to SD card. Some streaming apps can while others can't. And before I even know whether or an app can be moved, there isn't enough room to install to internal. Ive search everywhere and can't find anything to install apps from play store directly to SD card. This is a major issue with updates too. I have absolutely no intension of installing games. But the majority of the following apps I do need for business purposes. I need to have social (Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Discord, Reddit, and Tik tok) for business purposes, as well as Etsy to shop and maintain my shop. Store apps I frequent for business materials (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, and a few others). Utility apps for notes, docs, and calculating, among other things. Art apps for sketching and designing. And lastly some entertainment apps including Hulu, Vudu, Netflix, Disney+ Amazon Prime, and Kindle.
I know it seems like a lot, but please try not to criticize. I don't think it's too unreasonable being that I have all these apps and much much more just on my phone. I know it's a bit older, but I feel it's odd that my phone can hold this much without hinderance for updates, but a tablet can't.
I do truly appreciate your warning. I really do. But if you know the process (legitimacy), would you allow me to try it and I will take responsibility for the risk knowing full well you warned me? Please? Besides, the SD card was on sell, so it's not a big loss lol.
Take note that apps can only be placed on adopted storage media if the developer has specified support via the android:installLocation attribute.

As simple as that statement may have been, that went over my head a bit. "developer" being Samsung? How do I confirm this? or are you saying that Samsung does not support it?
And is "adopted storage" the termed used for describing the adb approach?

The 3rd party app doesn't is what jwoegerbauer
said.
This isn't the device for this job. Repurpose it for something else.
With those kind of apps you better get something with a huge internal memory.
Don't mix business with pleasure on a device; remember what pays the bills.
That said those apps you use for business are an open invitation for malware, phishing, hackers, etc.

Fair enough. Thank you both! Ironically I had it as our over glorified house remote to control Home Theater PC (unified remote), XBox, Lights, Smart devices, etc... but everything is available on streaming, so we got rid of HTPC, and everything else we've been using through our phones. It does however make a very sleek looking $15 paper weight ^_^ (It's value is apparently only $15 lol) Ugh, I refuse to go to apple... I wonder what device would meet my needs. I'm about to wear out Google lol. Anyway, thank you both again.

You're welcome.
You can find something for it to do... google repurposing old phones etc.
I have stock Samsung's only. They have a learning curve meaning they should be optimized before use. A model running on Android 9 or 10 would work nicely, disable firmware updates so it can't upgrade to 11 as that will break it. You want 256gb of internal memory, at least 6gb of ram and a SD card* slot is preferable.
If you use it for business consider getting 2 so you have a backup.
* all critical data goes here including everything you need for a complete reload.
Always backup critical data redundantly to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC. At the very least use a OTG flashstick to back the data up. Verify the data is readable and all there.
Never encrypt backup drives! Put them in a safe or deposit box if you must.
Develope a backup plan or eventually you will lose data.

@[email protected] Thats a "lot" to take in. The information is straight forward enough, but when I feel like a monkey banging against an obelisk ... lol. I do get it, I promise. I'll have to figure out a plan. I just went and picked up an S7. Shame on me tho: I asked for 256gb and after halfway done setting it up (at home) it occurs to me its a 128gb. That WAS my bad. Not the sales rep. I should have been paying attention to price difference, but I got the protection pla, and had rewards points and there was a Sale, so the price balanced out, and ya. . . I have the attention span of a 2yo. But not gonna take it back. It runs very smooth and stores what I need/want. Work tablet anyway, so aside from nes/snes/genesis/n64 emus and Lemmings game from app store, won't be loading anything heavy (*head drift slowly up and to the right as I get lost in dreams of VR*) Plenty of free space. Just really really disappointed that the Device still have the Phone and Messages app even though Call & Text feature is disabled in the US. Anyway, Thank you!I really really appreciate the emphasis on backup. New to business, so have to keep in mind how important info is. Thank you again for everything!
It is a lot to take in.
It's a evolutionary process of learning and adapting... not all done at once.
Depending on your device and needs you will modify what I said to fit your goals.
If you load a lot of apps 256gb is probably better.
I don't like creating open box specials but do what you need to do...
You need at least 50gb of headroom after you're done loading everything.
You can get by with a lot less but personally I want at least 100gb of headroom after loading on the internal memory.
No such thing as too much... it comes in handy.

Ooooooh ya, I am right there with ya on Open box stuff. There are very few things I trust open box, but phones and tablets are not among them. So, I have everything installed and I'm at 27% used on internal. So I feel pretty confident so far.

Yeah, I buy new phones only and so far its worked out well.
Sounds like you have enough internal memory
Get a V30 rated SD card like the Sandisk extreme. These run well. Format it in the device before using.
A .5tb one goes for about $75.
