[CAUTION] Windows VIRUS in sdcard - Galaxy Tab General

I really want to share my experience with other users here and warn everybody for this, because I wouldnt be able to locate any information after several searches in ggle. This may be a big security hole in the Android OS. Be patient and read till the end.
Yesterday I purchased my brand new SGT-P1000 (fmw:XXJK5, FROYO.XWJJ7). After playing around with the browser to check its Flash capabilities, I decided to play a little with the backround wallpapers as I wanted to design a custom one.
The way to upload images to SGT to test 'em, was through a USB mass storage connection, after having set the appropriate option in SGT's settings. After having done this 1 or 2 times, all of a sudden I saw IE windows starting to pop up in my WinXP desktop. This was strange cause I never use IE as my main browser. A quick view in task manager revealed 2 or 3 running processes with strange names and some files (executables) in file expl. windows dissappeared. I quickly understood that Im under a virus attack and under panic I shutted down windows and started thinking ways to overcome the situation.
I planned to turn on the PC once again to better understand the behaviour of the virus. So I did ... The strange processes had now different names and as I was able to issue a regedit command and navigate to CurrentVersion\Run keys (there are two of them, one in HKCM and one in HKCU key), I noticed a strange autorun entry pointing to some file in TEMP directory. Then I tried to open the services tab by issuing a 'services.msc' command. The result was an IE warning that the page could not be displayed due to ActX restrictions. So there was no way to figure out the registered processes in my machine. The fear to loose my data multiplied, so I decided to switch off, take the drive out and move it to an another machine in the office. So I did and after carefull examination of the folders and with little help of an antivirus program, I figured out the location of the malware files and got rid of them. Their location was in the TEMP folders of the machine, in my personal folder under 'Documents and Settings' and in the Windows folder (not system32). I dont remember what their names were, but as I told before, they were able to change 'em between reboots. My main observation was that the icon of two of the executables was the famous red Adobe Flash icon.
I took the disk out and put in the original machine, rebooted and the strange processes had gone, but I still couldnt see all my files in explorer windows, whereas in the other machine I was able to see em (and that was a great relief, cause I understood that nothing was deleted). Then I realized that the virus had changed security permissions for the local machine by inserting a key under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones, which after deletion and rebooting brought the system back to normal again. Then with the help of the SYSINTERNALS utilities, I was able to locate the spots where the virus tried to regenerate himself. These were in 'Sheduled Tasks' (2-3 jobs there), in processes (1 registered process) and in autorun (as I told before).
So, my thought was, that browsing around through many sites trying to find a custom wallpaper for my SGT caused the attack. But I didnt want to believe that, cause I use FF for browsing loaded with many add ons for safety and security.
Anyway ... I was happy that I could overcome the situation, I turned off the office pc and I arrived home to continue playing with my SGT. Playing around with SGT's and AndExplorer file manager, I browsed to the sdcard folder, where to my surprise, I saw that it contained 2 exe files with strange names (I remember one of them: koubuu.exe) and the same Adobe Flash red icon I noticed in my infected disk. There were also up to 10 .lnk files (shortcuts in windows systems) and a autorun.inf file and a x.mpg file.
If you were able to read with caution up to here, you may begin understand what the cause of evil was. No browsing to strange sites in the PC, nothing to do with the PC at all ... The cause was the browsing in the SGT (to realize that flash was performing well). During that playing some f***ing script run and placed these files in the sdcard mount. Of course this could not harm the functioning of the SGT at all, but when plugging to a windows machine (under mass storage) the autorun.inf activated and run the exe files, which in turn place themselfs under different names of course to several places in my machine.
Im not a security expert, and Im not saying that the virus came up to my sdcard folder due to flash's capability of the SGT, but as an experienced user and a software engineer from 1996, Im writing this to warn users and developers here, to be VERY VERY carefull with SGT's browser cause it's for sure that it lacks security. Another thing to mention is that as an iPhone user (which I was), I would've never faced a situation like this.
Anyway ... it just screwed my first 'hand on' to SGT and waste almost a night without sleep ...
Beware of Android ... it was developed very very fast as a cheap Apple/iOS competitor.
So you can imagine what the last means !!! It still needs much more work and effort.

There are av for andeoid (i use lookout) what i meant was i was going to plug my tab into my mac and do a sophos scan on the internal sd but i have had mac issues (it wont boot)
You should really get some av (avast free works for me)

There is a reason if only Windows has autorun, and if Microsoft is disabling it.........

What happened to you my friend is that a script got installed from browsing unsafe site. I am no engineer but i bet its one of those remote access scripts that microsoft patches on a daily basis which is prolly why your windows permissions got screwed (virus lesson number 1 deny user access). Anyway stock browser sux I never used it, and I think google and samsung are aware of browser issues. Hopefully we will see updates or next os.

Right !
Which browser do U propose for the SGT ?

I personally use skyfire which is an amazing browser. Dolphin HD comes highly recomended as well.

First of all: I am not an IT-Pro but the issue seems to be different. My idea is that the files havw not been initially on the sdcard but came indeed from browsing unsafe websites with your computer. Often Viruses protect and spread themselfs in the way that they copy themselfes to any mass-storage and/or nas attached to the infected computer. Maybe that way the virus went onto the sdcard. So I guess that it was not the SGT's fault. Sorry for bad english...

autorun.inf

so something very strange showed up on my g1... when i was looking through my sdcard with astro this came up in a autorun.inf file...
[autorun]
;fnldyysbuqcvzpnrofhariaepd

;sgtlhkaeymrvtiwpwnbswqrwenzajrpipwwrfrjrjyxwuvqysjjqaqxducqznobylygiiucvdzmllqw
The file appears where it is calling it from and it is a windows file but why would it show up on my android?

aww crap so now we have android viruses now? how the heck do we know if we have any and how to get rid of them?
sadly, this is where iphone is clearly not a problem (everyone hates pc stuff and always trying to sabotage)

What? This is a Windows virus that simply propagates by copying itself to all mounted drives (note the autorun.inf file). This has nothing to do with Android.
i don't think it is a Gphone virus, it is a windows virus.
Run a fulls can on your computer. The g1 isnt affected. It is based on the linux kernel. Windows is a mainstream OS so righting virus's has max impact since they will work on most PC's
With linux however, there are so many variations and such a lower number of users its that a virus would have low impact being spread. A linux virus wouldnmt work on all distrubutions without being coded to work on all making the file much larger.
Also linux has much tighter security permissions, if a virus did infect, the damage it could cause would be limited to permissions are set for the current user. It would not be able to modify system files, or copy itself into places without permissions.
This is why i run linux. No virus checker, no firewall, no spyware checker. There are also other advantages of linux/mac systems.
I have been running linux for 9 months, and now only have 2gb freespace. I have windows aswell. Linux runs as fast and smooth as it did when i installed it, windows has prgressvvly gotten sllower.
So, your g1 should be quite safe.
Disinfect your pc and memory card, to avoid spreading it.

It looks like Trojan Horse SHeur.CODS also known as W32.Tideserv according to a few places I've looked. I connected my Fuze to my laptop when I got home from work tonight. First as a Disk Drive then as ActiveSync for my Outlook. I played with customizations all day long at work and didn't see this particular folder (I cleaned/organized my storage card). After connecting to my Vista Ultimate laptop I found the folder "RESYCLED" on my storage card root, and it contains only one file "boot". I was curious like the rest of you - was my first thought. My became then . I just scanned my laptop yesterday night and found nothing.
Here's the link to Symantec's analysis of the threat: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-121016-4048-99&tabid=2
Apparently it's a recent discovery - Dec 10th.
In case you want to know if you're possibly infected, the symptoms are:
RESYCLED\boot.com in the root of your OS drive and USB storage device
autorun.inf in the root of your OS drive and/or USB storage device that contains something similar to my example below - it is created as a protected system file so you will need to go into Folder Options and uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files" so that you can see it
For example, my autorun.inf file contained:
Code:
[autorun]
;hkugpkenxpvzxhsntkierhcflipocsxsrvghnqpn
shellexecute="resycled\boot.com c:"
;toptzsxuizytvxhntkskeqaayeqturkjpgueqxyuyk
shell\Open\command="resycled\boot.com c:"
;lqrpqpoblodjeuitprbtdcgswwvvmbkwrxpyskfkondjsvinrgfyrabdpuyehckfjkaucmigadz
I tried simply deleting the files but they were recreated by whatever caused it within 2-3 minutes (literally enough time to alt+tab and add to my post and alt+tab back to the C:/ window).
As soon as I find a way to get rid of it without it recreating the files I will be happy to post it to this thread. It managed to forcefully redirect me away from Malwarebytes.org which has freeware that is supposed to remove this issue.
This is an old post but i got rid of it as soon as i found it i run Outpost pro 09 and i blocked a thing that poped up to propigate it. also blocked all other access to that file as i didnt know what it was. Even still i only reboot my desktop which it was on once every 3 weeks so i cleaned it off all my devices and network disk before any reboots.

opera 10 and camera usage

am i the only one getting mad problems trying to use both together? i ll have opera 10 open and minimized and ill try to run the camera and it will fail to initialize alot, sometimes just fail to initialize, sometimes it says not enough memory, but opera 10 will be the only other app running...
anyone else have this happening to them
I have this problem too. I think this is a known issue and there are no fixes as far as I can tell. you just have to kill opera 10 before starting camera or just use opera 9.7.
I used to have this problem
I used to have this problem but I removed most of the startup programs along with the \program files\selfservice (just renamed to stop.selfservice) programs and I can run everything at the same time. I even removed the bluet hoot service app in the startup but you can opened via shortcut.

connect to your PC with activesync, then use your PC to navigate to my device\windows\startup on the phone.
you know I just tried opening opera and camera and it's fine. perhaps it's working with the leo cpu patch now.
Just to follow up
My phone has been on 3 days without rebooting and I haven't close at all Opera 10. I have 26 processes running including 10 apps running. I think I solved the problem on my phone, not a single mem error.
So the problem was either in the startup apps or the selfservice apps.
By the way I don't use sense, i use SPB MS and s2u2, the phone feels fast very fast even with all that load?(only 179mb RAM free).

So, I have connected my phone using activesync, and every time i open the files on my phone, the windows directory is no where to be found. Why is this? I can find the windows directory just fine when using file explorer on my phone. But not via my computer.

Did you try to unhide the folders on Windows explorer>tools>folder options> check "Show hidden files and folders" remember not to delete the files in the startup folder just move them, maybe you'll need them if something doesnt work well specially BThoot.
Do you open it and choose to connect as active sync on the phone or disk drive? I think when I choose to connect as disk drive, then only the storage card shows up and not the on device storage.

As active sync, and yes that's correct you can't see the phone storage when accessing it in disk drive mode.
The items in the startup folder are mostly just .lnk files, which are links to the executables in the \windows folder...so as long as you can find those again if ever needed, then it's safe to just delete anything in there with a .lnk extension.

My set up>
T mobile HD2 latest ROM(how ever I was ok using old ROM).
SPB mobile shell 3.5.5 (Sense theme)
S2U2
Arkswitch
In My startup programs(windows/startup)>
arkswitch
ilock2
lumosstarter
spbmobileshell
everything else I moved to
windows/startup2 (or anywhere)
there is an app called BTtrayCE, this enables the bluethoot, so if i want to enable bluethoot i press a shortcut that i made to that app, then i turn bluethoot, probably is ok to leave bttrayCE but anyway i dont use it.
then i renamed the folder
program files/Selfservice to program files/stopselfservice
in this folder there is a lot of trash from t mobile that starts when you turn on the phone.
I think one of my main advantages is SPB ms, really, it disables all that sense stuff that crashes the phone (in my opinion), you can get better performance by using titanium but, it is not too productive.
I'm attaching some pictures of my phone. it is running since morning (it died because of battery) the last screen shot i posted before
Again no problems with the performance at all battery last for 1.5 days but i dont have data plan, just wifi 21 hrs a day.
Hope it helpsss

Awesome Roberto, thank you! I haven't gone in to clean out my startup group yet, but according to what you're showing even the few things that are in there now can go...although I might just put bttray back in there since I use BT all the time.
Also, oddly enough, I don't have the program files/selfservice folder you mention...maybe it's new in the 2.13 ROM...?
They came on 2.13

Actually yes I think they came with the new 2.13 ROM. For some reason with those files running I wasn't able to open more than 5 apps at the same time - they were autoclosing-, i think that's t mo's solution for stability in the HD2.
alright so i deleted some things, and i thinkk i may have messed something up.
when i hold the end key down to get to the menu where you can vibrate or turn off data it lags rediculously.....
could someone send me their startup folder shortcuts so i can compare what you have in there?
like an idiot....i didnt backup before i started deleting

[Q] Any real application or way to hide the files?

Okay. I have some important PDF files that I need to carry in my phone and I really want to keep them private. I have searched in the market for the application to hide the files, but it turns out that all those applications only provides us the way to hide only Pictures and Videos, which is obviously more demanding and so called private data.
My concern is, no matter how I store these documents, Adobe Reader always and always finds them and displays them. I don't know what's wrong with Adobe and why it is searching for all PDF documents in the SD card and displaying it to public.
I have made the following file/folder structures to make the files not to appear in the Adobe Reader, but failed every time. Adobe just find them somehow.
.folder/file.pdf
.folder/.folder1/file.pdf
.file.pdf
.folder/.file.pdf
.folder/.folder1/.file.pdf
I also have tried all above combinations by applying hidden and system attributes to the PDF files and those folders. But as its Linux, I failed.
So I did some research and though I'll just disallow adobe from accessing things, but when I went to security thing, it told me Adobe don't need anything.
Then why it is searching for my PDF files.
There is a way and only way to hide those files from Adobe is to change their extension to XPS ( ), but it isn't feasible and not something I'm looking for.
Kindly assist me. Thanks.
Couldn't you just password protect them?
Although not as convenient you could use a separate micro sd? Or you could use a cloud system like dropbox.
you can use an application like app protector to password protect the adobe reader. though ur files will be displayed in adobe reader but adobe reader itself would require a password\pattern to open.

The files are already secured and there's no way to edit them without knowing the password of those secured documents. And applying password protection to every single file isn't a feasible solution. Though it's a good answer, it's not a solution. Life would have been easier if Adobe would just have allowed users to browse directories and open files instead of listing thousands of PDF files in the system.

Yes, separate micro SD card is not the convenient way as I bough the 16GB card just to have everything in single place. I even dumped my iPod Touch, because I'm considering my Wildfire to all in device. And about dropbox, correct me if I'm wrong, but it needs Internet connection every time you want to see the file, exception of cached file. May be I'm expecting too much, but my provider don't support the 3G in my area, so GPRS internet isn't something I can rely on.

Now that's a solution. I've tried the application just now and it looks promising. Thanks a lot for providing the solution, it's easier to get rid of Adobe instead of hiding files.
after applying the command, like writing . in renaming u have to restart ur cell , nd then ur reader will not find that. without restart it holds the path already so it able to find even u hide them. or dnt want to restart then install e.s security. thats gud

Even after restart, Adobe Reader just finds the files somehow and shows all of them. I'm using the App Protector now and its working fine. But few hours ago found E S Security in the market and installed it on my phone. I still needs to have a look at it. Thanks for the note mate, will be helpful for other applications.
Why Security-Through-Obscurity Won't Work
I'd rather try encrypting the files and/or not use FAT16/32 filesystem as it provides no security whatsoever
Maybe repartition your card to use a ext3/ext4 partition with user rights and encryption if those data are important to you.

Drop Box/Online Storage

Not sure if you guys have used this but Ive found it pretty handy for online storage. Called drop box, you get 2Gb free and can upgrade and get more if you need it!

It's a pretty popular online storage / file sharing service and along with the DropBox Android app, a great extension for storage on tablets.

Indeed, so far loving it!
Another online storage tool is Spideroak. It works across many platforms including Android and Linux. I am still in the process of testing it out. Not quite as intuitive as Dropbox. But I used the promo code *worldbackupday* and got a free upgrade to 5GB of storage. Not bad.
I'm using ubuntu one for my tablet and pc with ubuntu
Wysłane z Acera A500
Just trying out Asus Web Storage. It has a very cheap option for unlimited storage.... Tempting!
I personally can't think of any use for these online storage systems. It would be okay if you could mount them and then have all your applications be able to access the files there directly, but if you always have to copy stuff back and forth first then... meh.
Well the great thing about DropBox is that it integrates into windows just like a regular folder.
Once you've installed the application (which has a very small footprint) you can use the Windows 'Send To' context menu option and send anything to the DrobBox folder on your computer and it syncs with the account, making whatever you put in there available from any web-connected device. (either in a public or private folder which you can also set up)
You can also setup shared folders between people/teams which has a semi-type check-in/check-out feature that shows when others are working on them. So, say I'm working on a design doc - I can open it directly from my DropBox folder (since its a regular windows folder) make changes, edits etc, save it and it syncs the new version with anyone else I'm sharing the folder with.
As far as the tablet goes, it really is an extension to storage but only in a minimalist sense. Launching the Android App shows you all your DropBox folders and you can navigate though folders and open files or download them to your tab (without having to mount the tab to your computer or do that SD card dance). The primary point being, you can access them directly from the DropBox app and not actually have them on your tab.
I use it mainly to store books and other documents (also my bootanimations and screenshots) so when I want to access them (or give access to them) I can share the link, or open the files directly on my tab - make changes, save and it saves to DropBox.
It really is flawless and elegant.

It's also entirely reliant on people and systems over which you have no control. It can fail without warning, just because something between you and their servers goes wrong, and you have zero assurance of security either.
I hate the "cloud". I think it's stupid, pointless and potentially downright dangerous. You have zero control over your data or who has access to your data.

What.are.you.talking.about?
All that reads like over sensitive hyperbole and paranoia to me.
You're suggesting that just because you have files in your DropBox folder that it's unsecure?
Anything can fail without warning - that's hardly an ongoing and preventative concern of mine. I could turn on the light in my bathroom and *might* pop and yet, here we are. I'm not about to take a flashlight in with me every single time *just in case*.
Your HDD can fail. Your CPU can pop. Your MB can short... I mean, what are you expecting? Putting files on DropBox is no more unsecure than burning it to a DVD or copying it to a Flash drive or leaving it on your HDD.
There are *levels* of security and DropBox is far more secure than you give it credit. If security is a serious concern of yours, turn off the internet.
And regarding the cloud. See paragraph 2.

I know it does on Windows, but my tablet doesn't run Windows.

That's the whole point why I don't like these kinds of things: it's cumbersome if I always have to go through this or that application first in order to use a file. It should just be mounted on a specific directory and that's that. I can only hope someone will create something like that for Android soon.
I wonder though if there is any way of mounting SSH connections, like for example as through Fuse as is possible on Linux. Then I wouldn't have to worry about these kinds of things at all as I have ample amounts of storage space on my server.
The company I work for, one of the largest IT corporations in Europe, SELLS cloud services. I know what I'm talking about.
Your files are not secure, no matter the assurances you're given, and Dropbox has had some pretty major security flaws in the quite recent past. And as a recent screwup on Amazon's cloud services recently showed, if something goes wrong or some dumbass makes a mistake, you might not even get your data back intact. That sort of thing happens a lot more often than you think, too.
Hell, we sell the bloody services to the world, but our own internal network services are down more often than a whores knickers!

If you need *more* security then don't use it. I don't know how much simpler it can be.

That's why there is an Android App. The service is a ubiquitous sharing that acts like a regular Windows folder while in the Windows environment. It's not *beholden* to the Windows environment.

I'm not sure how you can suggest it's cumbersome if you haven't tried it. Open the DropBox application, navigate to a file and select it and it opens in whatever app you have it set to open. They only different between than and opening a native application and then finding the file you want to open and opening it is that using the DropBox method, the file has to be downloaded first - which maybe is a thing for you, I don't know.
If you want it on your tab, select the file and download it - it saves to the local DropBox folder and at that point you can access it locally like any other file. The only other option is to manually put the file on your tablet - via cable, SD card, email - whatever method you see fit. To me, *that's* cumbersome.
Like I said, DropBox is more about access than storage. People use DropBox because they want access to files over the web in the same manner they would over a home network (without using bloated VNC's and multiple programs). If you have no need for such a function then DropBox doesn't sound like something you'd use.

It doesn't differ at all from opening file manager, navigating to samba share and downloading a file from there. That's why I said I'd like something that allows me to mount the whole thing as a regular directory on my tablet, THEN it would be useful. Like for example, the eBook reader I have shows as a collection all the books I have. If the cloud storage was mounted on a directory I could just point the eBook reader to that directory and POOF, they'd all be visible and accessible without having to copy anything back-and-forth.
Unfortunately there seems to be no such service for Android. Atleast not yet :/

Look, I'm not bashing DropBox. I just voiced a wish for additional functionality. I already have DropBox-like functionality via file manager and browsing to either Samba-share or SFTP-share, with 2Tb storage, on my own server, but if I could just mount the thing on a directory it'd be a lot, LOT more useful.

"IndexService" issue solved..(Quick battery drain & endless or error index process)
"IndexService" issue cause drain your battery very very quickly... Especially, if your sd card loaded with a lot of big pdf files...
If you dont want to index your "files" go to "s search" settings through menu softkey (long press for open s search then enter menu) and uncheck files... and voila.. your pdf's and another user files not index anymore..
Actually, i really want all of my files content index by note3.. This is very very useful for my pdf library.. But for my situation; several pdf's (some of them are big textbook's, thousands of page) cause never ending indexing process and it's ruin battery life terribly..
If someone find a REAL solution beside of mine, please tell us...

There is an easy solution. Create a folder for your pdfs, drop a .nomedia file in the root of that folder, and put all of your pdfs you dont want indexed in there.
I found that the indexservice process is taking more cpu and time when I have more number of pdf files i my memory card.
So, right now either you can put less number of pdf files on your device to avoid the lag or just wait till the indexing completes.
After the indexing completes, the device works as wonderfully as it was working before inserting my memory card.
Hope I helped...Cheer!!!
Or you can just kill it in settings/apps/active...
It shuts up untill you reboot.

I really hope samsung pushes out an update about it. Even after indexing is done whenever I try to do something quickly it seems it will FC because of the indexer. can't really play any games on it as well because of it.

I don't have root either. Just go to settings > general > application manager > running, tap .com.samsung.android.strokesearch:service. (down near the bottom) Hit 'Stop' and then 'yes'.
Now it stays away until you reboot, at which point you need to do this again. Bit tedious, but it's quicker than rooting.

Easy way to root ant fix this issue
You can fix this issue very easily.
1. Root your phone in under 1 minute at towelroot.com
2. download a freezing app (I paid for a really good one, $6 for titanium backup pro)
3. freeze the offending service.
I didn't know how to do any of these things an hour ago. A quick google question for any you need to learn will give you easy answers.
towelroot is insanely easy. be sure your settings allow non play store apps to be installed; go to towelroot.com; click on the red symbol thing to download the apk; run the apk and you are rooted. done.
I have most recent OS and updates as of the date of this post, sprint Note 3 with 4.4.2 and cnc5 baseband/build number

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by 'files' and 's search'. Do you mean that you have to uncheck each .pdf file in some way? What if we have thousands of them?
Or do you mean something else?
Someone else suggested putting all the .pdf files in a separate subdirectory and adding a .nomedia file. This hides ALL the .pdf files from every app that might search for them including the ones you use to read .pdf files.
We called Samsung this morning. Three levels, no help. They did NOT even understand the problem. "Do a factory reset." Did that, major nuisance, especially losing all the bookmarks in the .pdf files. No solution, it just started indexing again. It says it will take 5 hours to index and there are only 4 hours of battery left. If you plug it into the charger the Galaxy Tab shuts down after half an hour.
I was thinking of replacing my BLU phone (which has serious Play Store/storage problems) with a Samsung, but now I'm not so sure.

I've suggested that in several boards. It's what works for me. Frankly it's best to put one in every directory that you don't actively require the mediafiles from. (actively being ringtones and music.)
So any folder with documents, books, comics, navigation maps, magazines, films... You can launch all from the file explorers. (the maps don't need to be seen at all by mediascanners.) nomedia files apply to subdirectories as well, so one in each directory will suffice. You can copy one from the Android folder.
I've got one folder with 30GB worth of PDF files.
I do occasionally get an indexservice wakelock, but that's always because it hangs on a corrupt file, not the pdfs.

Factory resets don't solve these things. Customer support employees are hired for their affinity with service, not their technical and product knowledge. They usually don't know much at all.

We have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro SM-T520 running android 4.4.2 just updated today. We also have a 12.2 Note, and I assumed things were similar. Maybe not. He just followed your instructions. Indexing is still running in the background. It won't stop. I'm reluctant to reboot, but will if it's necessary. Is it?
I don't understand how the .nomedia thing works for you and not for us. He uses ES File Explorer and EBookDroid and neither could see the files in the subdirectory containing the .nomedia file.
I would have assumed that if you persist you can find someone in the 'help' department who at least understands the problem. Apparently not.
This is extremely discouraging

I've got a NotePro 12.2 too. Strange how it doesn't work on yours...
Is ES File Explorer not seeing the .nomedia files or is the folder suddenly empty?
Did he reboot after placing the files and changing the settings? Indexingservice will always run for a few minutes after a reboot.
Alright, have him hook the sdcard to a pc (preferably with a cardreader) and let explorer search it for 0kb files. It depends on your system language, in english you can search for 'size:empty'. You can also click the advanced search options and select size.
Any file it finds that isn't a nomedia file or a playlist, delete (or move to the pc.)
Then do the same with the tablet itself. (this will take a while, mtp is agonisingly slow.)
Surely at some point this must begin to make sense.

The 12.2 Note hasn't been updated yet. Has yours? Fear and trepidation...
There were no 0-lenth files when he read the card on the computer. Sizes of the files seemed not-abnormal and he spot checked a few, which were OK. BTW, we're using linux, not windows.
Possible misunderstanding: Previously he created a subdirectory called .nomedia and put all the pdf files in it. The subdirectory itself was invisible to ES file explorer etc.. He's now putting all the pdf and epub files in /sdcard1/pdf and adding a 0-length file called .nomedia to the subdirectory.
The index service is running and the damn thing is warming up. He's plugging it into the charger and going to bed (he keeps odd hours.) More whenever.
Google doesn't seem to be willing to offer much help unless you own a Nexus -- they just tell you to contact your manufacturer. Given that they sell android to the manufacturers, presumably at a profit, this seems at the very least cheesy and certainly not in keeping with the "Do no evil" mantra. How can the manufacturers possibly be expected to cope with the inner workings of how the OS itself operates?

Ah. Folders with a . as the first symbol are hidden folders. They're still scanned by indexingservice, just not shown. (ES has an option in settings > Display to enable them) I usually just copy the .nomedia file from SDcard/Android and past it in the folder where I need it.
Basically it should be Sdcard(or sdcard1)/pdf, with in it the .nomedia file followed by all the pdfs. You can sort the pdf's into folders inside /pdf, because the nomedia file in /pdf excludes the folders in it as well.

BTDT, except he doesn't want to clear data/cache on the off-chance that it will delete his laboriously-recreated bookmarks in the books he's reading. It would be nice if apps would tell you exactly what they're going to delete/clear/empty.
I had a vague hope that the Samsung guy would perhaps know somebody in Samsung engineering, thereby bypassing the useless helpdroids.

Choose your size. It's a keeper.
Clearing Data/Cache on S Finder affects only the data gathered by S Finder. S Finder is nothing more than a search app. So it only clears the indexed search data.
The bookmarks made in the books he is reading are stored in the data of the reader app he is using or the files themselves. S Finder can't touch those.
I always prefer this one
I have a Note 4 and was having the same issue. The culprit in my case was the SD Card. I first used a Samsung Class 10, 64GB. "Index" was killing my battery. I formatted the card inside the phone, but it was no use. Then I exchanged the card for Sandisk Ultra 64GB, which I believe is in the same Class. Magically, "INedex" issue stopped and then I got very good battery Life! Result is: Samsung Card was not compatible with Samsung phone... Who can understand these things happenning..?!
