can't connect to pc...usb device not recognized - Xoom General

hey guys.
i've been using the xoom for about 3 weeks now. i have the latest motohelper driver. i'm using windows 7 x64. i've been able to access and transfer files before no problem. I rooted over a week ago and also have had no problems moving files around. accessing the sd card from the pc has also worked.
now yesterday I send my wife to move a file over, and she tells me it's not working. sure enough, no matter which usb port on the pc I plug it into, or how i disconnect and reconnect the cable on the xoom, windows gives me the USB device not recognized message.
I've tried rebooting both the PC and the Xoom. i've reinstalled the drivers. i've enabled and disabled usb debugging on the xoom. still get the same message. under device manager it shows as Unknown Device. if I go and manually select the Motorola MTP drivers it tells me it can't start the device.
we haven't done any recent software changes on the PC or the Xoom. specially not within the last two days for it to go from plugging in just fine to USB Device Not Recognized.
any suggestions?
thanks.

New Droid X can't install USB composite device

Hello folks,
Last Saturday, my Droid X was stolen. I just got the replacement today and being a semi-noob, I just realized that I hadn't copied all of my Titanium Backup from the SD card to the computer so now I'm basically stuck at the beginning.
I'm ready to root my device but I've hit a roadblock. For some reason, I cannot get through the installation for USB Composite Device. I've tried PC Mode, Mass Storage, Windows Media Sync, and Charge Only. Sometimes I can see the icon of the Droid in my computer but I can't get it to show only the removable storage device.
Cannot Install this Hardware - Error occurred during the installation of the device. The System cannot find the file specified.
I don't want to root and backup everything to the SD card if my computer won't read the SD card. I have the motorola drivers installed and this worked fine on the previous phone.
Can anyone help me figure out this problem? Thanks!
Make sure the Motorola drivers are installed correctly on your PC. You might need to locate the latest versions from motorola to do this.
IIRC, I had a similar problem on my work PC originally. For some reason, the automatic detection wasn't set to check the Internet for drivers, so it was only looking on my laptop. Try checking that.
Did you try changing the phone settings so "USB debugging" was on? Sorry- I can't remember where the heck it is now. The settings on this phone to me are just wonkie. It's in there though. Try it with that turned on.
Usb debugging is in settings>applications>development
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Turn USB Debugging off. Set USB connections to Mass Storage.
If you have autplay turned on, then Windows will offer to run/install the moto connect software. This version is slightly different ( from what reason?) from the one available at Moto's website.
Run that full install, THEN switch over to USB Debugging and allow it to install the drivers (Again)

[Q] connectivity windows seven

When I plug in my Htc Glacier w7 automatically installs drivers for the phone. Upon inspection the drivers are for remote NDIS internet sharing. So great i can tether super easy, and all. The problem lies in the fact that i have no way of accessing the SD card. even when i mount the SD card on the phone it fails to show up on the computer. The SD card works fine, and the phone works fine. I have all the usb drivers for the mt4g but i never get a chance to apply them. If i got to update drivers it says its already up to date even when i point it right at he usb driver folder. If i uninstall the drivers and unplug then replug in the device they are just automatically reinstalled, not giving me a chance to do anything else. Just upgraded to w7 from xp64 this is the only major problem i am having.
Just in case you haven't tried, in settings check under connect to pc, and you should have the choice to turn the phone into a portable hard drive or something like that... can't say what the exact wording is on the phone, as I'm not running stock anymore and the connect to pc sub-menu isn't there anymore.

Cannot Connect to PC AARGH!

Hi,
EDIT * I have found a solution in that I can connect via WI fi so that's pretty good but if anyone can help me with the USB issue, it would still be appreciated. It seems that the Wi Fi connection is more limited as I am unable to view things in explorer *
hoping to get some help using my USB to connect to my PC. I've installed Kies but when I try to connect to my PC it just keeps on trying to connect but never actually does it.
I have looked for guidance on this but keep coming across the instructions to go into 'about phone > USB settings' etc etc. However, I do not have a USB settings in about phone. In fact, there is nothing at all about USB in About Phone. I do have a 'USB Utilities' in Wireless and Networks but all that gives me the option to do is 'Connect Storage to PC'. I have a memory card in my phone.
When I do connect to the USB cable, with Kies open, when windows 'finds new hardware' it keeps saying a problem occurred during installation.
Please can anyone help me out? All I want to do is basically drag and drop some files from my PC to my phone. Thanks very much for your help.
Settings --> Applications -- Development --> USB debugging.
Thanks for that!
It got me a little further. I also unmounted then remounted the SD card. However, when I try to connect via kies I now get the message:
Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to re click the USB settings on the phone before connecting to Kies now that it's installed the hardware on my PC?

Click to collapse
Turn off USB-Debugging
Don't connect phone yet
Open Kies
Open the Tools menu -> Troubleshoot connection error
Go through the guide and let it reinstall the drivers.
Connect you phone, and let it connect
The default setting has the USB debugging tick greyed out. When I select it, it asks me if I want to allow debugging.
Do you mean that I shouldn't allow debugging and then connect (after reinstalling Kies) or should I allow it and connect? Sorry for my noobishness, Android is all completely new to me.
You should untick the USB-debugging - Then reinstall drivers NOT entire Kies
OK, it's unticked and I'm reinstalling the drivers via troubleshooting.
Do I need to unmount then remount the SD card before connecting my phone? Thanks for your help btw.
Shouldn't make a difference
Bah, I still have the same problem. It just says that there was a problem installing the hardware when I plugged in the phone.
After reinstalling the drivers, i shut down Kies then reopened it. I then plugged in the USB and then plugged the USB into my phone.
When I first installed Kies yesterday, Microsoft Active Sync kept on trying to activate and ask for a CD. It kept on holding up Kies. In the end I uninstalled Active Sync. Also, I still have Samsung PC Studio on my PC from when I had a Samsung a few years ago. It was one of those old slider phones, not a smart phone. Could that be part of the problem? I was hoping to keep it because it's proved to have the best media player I've ever had.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here.
Try without restarting Kies.
What part of the drivers aren't installed? (Check device manager)
In Device Manager, under Portable Devices there's something called Android MTP that has an exclamation mark next to it. It says it's not configured correctly and that 'No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device'. I'll reinstall the Kies drivers now.
Thanks for this help mljjlm
P.S. Now that I've unplugged the phone, the MTP thing isn't showing in the device manager list anymore.

Of course, it's a part of the phone, and it should not be plugged in because they would have to force a reboot when reinstalling drivers (which might sort your problem btw)
Reinstalled the Kies Drivers and then plugged in my phone but got the same problem. It says a problem occurred. Same device now has a problem in device manager. Maybe I should just uninstall everything and restart? Should I uninstall the old PC studio too?
Just try the reboot without uninstalling anything and then plug the phone in when your pc has booted
Argh! Still didn't work! I think there must be a problem with my PC, well, I'll try doing full uninstalls and reinstall it all. I have to go now as well so I'll have to try again tomorrow.
Thanks very much for your patience mljjlm. It has been greatly appreciated
Are you trying to just transfer files back and forth? If so... forget using Kies.
(I don't have a micro-USB cable with me currently, so this is all from memory)
Just remove the drivers from your device manager so it's like your machine has never seen your phone before. Then on your phone enable usb-debugging.
When you then plug in your phone, you should get a usb icon up top on your phone's display... pull the window-shade down and click on the USB connection button. You should get a fullscreen window on your phone that says something like USB Connection with the friendly android waiving.
Now your PC should see your phone as a standard USB mass storage device.
try plugging the usb cable in another usb port on your computer and than try again.

You're using Kies, that's what you're doing wrong. You said in your very first post you wanted to be able to drag and drop some files from your PC to your phone, so use USB debugging (say yes when it asks you) and Windows Explorer.
If you are using a custom rom like Checkrom Revolution you will need to install the kies support from kitchen pro.
Also are you using the cable that came with your phone?
I have found a few microUSB cables that will allow charge and wont allow data transfer like the new ones for nokia devices and some blackberrys.
It worked! The USB debugging thing!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. The forum said I was limited to 5 thanks per day so if you didn't get one of the thanks I apologise. Thanks very much!

[Q] USB File Transfer Problems

Helo all,
since two days I now own an Thinkpad Tablet and am happy so far. Only when ein plug it into my PC (Win7 64bit) via USB it is recognized but I still can't transfer files. When I open MyComputer in the Explorer on the PC I ca see the Tablet, click on it but then no files on the tablet show and I also cant transfer any. It then gives me an error: Device was disconnected or istn working properly.
Tried installin ADB Drivers form Lenovo, switching USB debugging off and on, no help.
When I plug it in on the tablet im prompted with the selection of just charging or MTP. If I choose MTP it makes the same Windows sound as if unplugged....
Any Ideas?
thanks

USB not working on Windows 7

Last night I finally decided to use Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit to unlock the bootloader, root the device, flash CWM recovery and installed SlimBean ROM. It was somewhat of a pain to get adb to work at first, it had me uninstall drivers off my PC. Now when connecting my tablet to my PC, PC is not letting me view the internal SD card, nothing comes up. I've tried connecting it to another Windows 7 PC, same issue. Wondering if its something with the ROM, anyone else had this problem? What's the solution.
Uninstall USB ADB Driver
I had the same problem. What ended up working was re-connecting the tablets via USB to my Windows 7 machine. Open up Device Manager and find Nexus 7, right-click on it and select Uninstall (this removes the ADB drivers that were used to root, etc). Then disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it. Then it should automatically reinstall the USB drivers for MTP access. Hope that helps.
That's actually what I had to do to get Root Toolbox to work....or so it said.. I'm surprised though, if I hook it up to another PC why that PC wouldn't automatically try to install the driver.. If I have it with USB debugging off, it doesn't show in the display manager, if I enable USB debugging it does. Tried uninstall, disconnect, reconnect USB cable, same issue.
Check your USB Connection settings for MTP yet?
Thank you. Didn't know where that was at first. Went to settings:storage:menu icon:USB connection settings: checked MTP. now my PC is detecting the N7.
