As I quite like running tests, and i am a bit bored, here are the results of me testing my Download/Upload and signal strength with different baseband versions.
Phone was kept in just about the same position the whole time, and no extra tweaks where applied.
The phone had 80%+ battery at the time of the tests.
All other data about rom/kernel etc is in the spreadsheet.
As I dont have random sims for the other UK networks on hand I cant compare
And onto the link
Notes:
For dBm higher(closer to 0) is better
asu measures the same thing, but on a diffrent scale, higher is better
Both download and upload speeds are in kB/s (Kilobyte Per Second) rather than Mbps (Megabites per second) (8 bits to a byte)
I don't have a low signal area on hand so I cant comment on data speed or signal quality there.
hello,
so the KE7 baseband is better than others baseband?

The "best" baseband version is very much dependant on network, and where you are in the world.
In my testing its the best for me on 3UK in england.
The best way to find out which is best for you, is to flash a few and do some basic speed tests, I recommend the speed test app here
I was getting pretty bad speeds with the KG1 modem/baseband/phone and I have seem some other 3UK user note it, so I though I would do some basic tests.

Do a speed test, turn it off, do a test.
If your download speed is faster with it off, your network doesnt support it.
Or google "network name Fast Dormancy"
The KE7 Radio for me on 3UK doesn't work well though. It does that thing where it gets stuck on upload.
Changing APPN to 3internet and turning off Fast Dormancy helps a little.

And for me, no matter which Rom and kernel i use, the download speed is less than the upload speed. Any idea how to rectify this.

im using:
baseband xxkg1
kernel xxkg1
rom: villain rom 2.0

Spiffy, the other thing to-do is look at which radio's where shipped with official roms in your region! As they might be more inclined to be better tuned for the area.
Before anyone changes apn from three.co.uk to 3internet, I have read that the original .co.uk one on our phones allows roaming 3g when out of the 3 network range. 3internet does not.

Not that I know of, use this app to edit it on the phone, needs root
Its really not a reliable Test in my opinion as I tried it .. Am on Vodafone Uk
I am on the KG1
Under status Mine will change between (73-87 dBm) and (17-20 asu) If you keep looking at it
I get around between 2 -2.5 mb downloads and 1 -1.5 mb upload
Just a thought on a different network

Can anyone confirm if they have a rock solid 3G/HSDPA data connection with HKCSL 1010 with any android builds? Please post APNs and radio/wm ROM/combinations if possible. It is nowhere near the speeds from my WM ROM from before but I just love the Android OS so much more as it's smoother and faster than any custom WM ROM's available. It runs great if it's on WI-FI, i just can't pay for my data connection and settle for a nice OS and almost 500Kbps data connection for now it's very frustrating and dissapointing since i'm in HKCSL 1010 NEXT G data plan..

with latest builds, i have problem with bad signal reception... a have edge connection most of time.. i didn`t have this problem before... now in 4 builds i`ve tryied.. maybe it is because ppp?
Thanks for the replies guys but what do u mean true hsdpa? We are on a 3.5G network and also I see some other fellow users having 3g speeds of 3-5mbps which is super fast already. I have tried almost every rom out there and different barebone WM ROM as well but made no difference. Speeds are like GPRS slow! Tried PPP and RMNET but can't even tell a difference...sad as I can't use it with full potential.

Those numbers aren't exactly true as the browsing is slow as hell. I don't know how speedtest.net do it but it sure hell ain't that fast as it seems like it's constipated.
Most I get on every build I've tried is rough 0.33mbs connection, I've hit nothing over 45kb/s yet seem to be able to upload at over 70, that's on T-MOB UK, pain in the arse but I just try and stick to wifi, nothing I can figure out after swapping so many roms/radios/builds/modules etc etc etc!!!!
try out bangsters 1.4 (the latest i think) and edit the startup to PPP, used chuckyrom and 2.12 radio and seems like it's working pretty good. Not much constipation at all. Try it out and let me know. I only had wifi so couldn't check 3G speeds before (here in HK for trip now).
i am using darkstones desire hd build on o2 in the uk and currently get roughly 2meg down when connected to hsdpa

Lei ho..
Please try my setup via my tag, I'm getting 2.3Mbit for download and 700kb for upstream..
BladeZ
Since moving to Android on HD2 from the myTouch Slide, my data speeds have oddly evened out.
Meaning, data speeds have increased in places I used to only get EDGE coverage at and decreased to about 2mbps where I used to get 4-5.
I just hopped on to this part of XDA but I've gathered that Android development has only been happening for about three months. That's nothing! Look at all the cool stuff people have done! I think it's only a matter of time before the radios and builds start jiving a bit better. I'm ultra happy with what I've got so far.

My speedtest results are good (~450-500 kB/sec down, 150 kB up) on 3g, but when I use the market, the speeds are much slower. Same with wifi: speedtest reports excellent results, but using market is slow.
Hi I just flashed back to a dutty's WM rom and the browsing speed is much more faster and consistant. The rom is fast but opera just isn't smooth at scrolling and the windows limitation of colors isn't as smooth either. There are always some good and bad for the 2. I miss android already...but until there is a fix for consistent 3G and hsdpa connection, it is not ready for primetime yet...just my personal opinion.

I'd have to agree unfortunately. Android's biggest weakness in my eyes is it's reliance on online connectivity. Nearly every app on Android needs to go online. So when the online connection is intermittent and unstable it makes Android virtually defunct.

GUYS!!! been fiddling with this $hit long enough! Today, just found out why my provider and 3G speeds are so damn slow. I read up on other forums (not xda) and played with APN settings. Don't know if they were case sensitive or not, or whatever..but i simply put in my provider name "CSL", and APN as "internet" and leave EVERYTHING ELSE blank, i get a screaming fast connection. NO HICCUPS NO CONSTIPATION. TRY IT!!! Don't input all those garbage numbers as it just confuses you! ONE thing though, you will not be able to access WAP I believe but i don't use it anyways. I have a LIMITED data plan and all this testing been taking up my 500MB quota already so I won't even bother with the speedtest process anymore. GOOD LUCK and please report back guys!

hi everyone
this is my bad news
i just got my nexus s
and i still own my galaxy s
now same phone provider(optus australia) same Apn setting this is speed result?
Galaxy S: 4.92 download
1.12 uploading
Nexus S: 2.21 download
1.05 uploading
what also i can see i got H on my Galaxy but only 3g on my Nexux s
well for sure this make the different i believe but why for the same Apn tested in the same place??
now we have to fing the answare
Mr Gee
The answer is that Google don't seem to like the H icon and therefore disables it. The phone still works fine on HSPA, it just doesn't display it.

but the different in speed?

Have you done multiple tests against multiple servers at different times of the day and averaged the results?
I can truly see a difference of 50% or more from one test to another sometimes, even when ran just a few minutes apart. Network traffic is just funny that way.
The other thing you might want to do to validate your comparisons is get the Antennas app from the Market (it's free) and make sure both phones are actually connecting to the same tower. They should be, but if you're in an overlapping tower area, they might not be due to load balancing by the network.
i will try
so definitely is not H on nexus S?

You will never see an H indicator on the Nexus S with the current stock firmwares. You'd need to flash a modded ROM or modify your frameworks file yourself to get it.
The phone is definitely capable of H speeds, though.
Same here in Florida. Vibrant gets 5 or 6 mbps down and 1.6 up while NS gets a max of 2 or 3 down and 900 k up

Have you guys called T-Mo customer service and asked them to look into the problem relative to your individual phone?
They'll probably tell you to try a new SIM card (if you're using the one you had on an older device).
The phone is capable of faster speeds than you're seeing. It should get comparable to a Vibrant.
my sim i three week old
i will try to swap with sim from gs and test again
to be continued
I'm going to start throatpunching people who ask this question.
Just because you don't see an "H" in the framework, doesn't mean you're not connecting to the HSDPA.
Start downloading something then type in *#*4636#*#* in the dialer. Look at "Phone Info" and watch the "Network Type." You'll notice a few seconds after it starts downloading, it'll switch from UMTS(3G) to HSDPA(also 3G).

I love my vibrant, so fast so reliable so quick...to me nexus s is a downgrade
I have both the SNS and the SGS
SGS is on Fido
SNS on Wind
both gets a top speed down speed of 2800+ Mbps
and aprox 800+ Mbps up stream
that just gives you an idea that the SNS works properly, it might simply be the capacity load of the cell tower you were connected to

Nothing wrong with the phones or SIM. Has to do with the modem. Flashing different modems on the vibrant have the same effect. Some modems are more aggressive, but use more battery. Nexus One stock gets same download speed as nexus S. I'm sure most NS and Vibrant will perform the same in the same geographical area.
BTW, you don't get the same download speeds everywhere. At home I get 2mbps but at work, about noon, I get close to 6 (with the vibrant) and close to 3 with NS.
In any case, 2mbps is pretty good. I won't go and exchange my phone because of that. I have learned to enjoy my NS as opposed to look for any possible thing that makes it not perfect in the eyes of "my friends"

yea i attempted this.... dkno how much of a difference it made for me, but before i did this i was averaging 2mbps downloads speed and uploading i was averaging 600 to 800kbps ..very consistently
after, im averaging from 1.6mbps upwards to 3.8mbps so it did something i guess but its not very consistent from what ive been seeing on my phone.. but ive only tested it for an hr or so...ill keep testing it for another day or two, go back to my original setup and see if it was a big difference or not.
let me know how it goes with anybody else that has attempted this

NOT WORKING FOR MY HD 2.
GPRS - 12
HSUPA - 10
HSDPA - 10
HSXPA - 2
That's my setting. The 12/8/5/2 or 12/14/7/3 just dont work for me and I've actually gotten worse data speed. I think it's location/cell tower/carrier dependent, so it might not yield the best result for all.

Hi Folks, I looked around for a thread like this and didn't find one, but if there's one out there let me know and please send me a link!
I would much appreciate it if you folks out there could do a few tests and contribute to this thread. Use the Speedtest.net app and do 5 runs, take an average, and let me know what rom, modem, location, and pertinent addons and settings you have.
I am on a stock rom, rooted with the Revolted Kernel.
I did some testing with 3G speeds just to see if anything I could do would change the abysmal speeds we get here in the Greenville, SC area. I did 5 consecutive Speedtest.net app runs for each test, and averaged the results, noting the time and other details. Background data was off on all tests, and signal strength stayed very stable around -80db. I kept the phone in the same location on the desk for each test. The results are as follows (average values are in the order of ping, download, upload):
Test 1. No reboot, no adds, EC05 Server: Toledo OH
9:55 AM
209,523,528
Test 2. Reboot, no adds, EC05 Server: Toledo OH
10:00 AM
231,381.6,413.2
Test 3. Reboot, no adds, Fresh EC05 odin with EFS Clear Server: Augusta, GA
10:15 AM
184,414.6,533.4
Test 4. Reboot, Supercharger V6 version 8, EC05 Server: Atlanta, GA
10:52 AM
205.8,404.2,605
Test 5. Reboot, SCV6, 3G Turbocharger3 update 11 setting 1 (fast). EC05 Server:Ringgold, GA
11:12
322.4,527,605.6
Test 6 Reboot, SCV6, 3G T3 update 11 setting 3 (fastest) EC05 Server: Atl, GA
11:24
196.8,319,489
Summary? They were all basically the same, nothing I was able to do had any significant effect of the speeds in a positive or negative manner. This is in no way conclusive, but is kindof interesting. I think the story here is that I am at what the network is capable of. If this is true, this is pretty sorry 3G speeds.
I am going to try different modems at some point, and post those results here as well. If you would like to see my data sheet, I have it in Excel, PM me and I'll send it to you
*Modem and GB test results in Post 2!*
Ok, here are my preliminary tests with the modems. Supercharger V6, 3G turbocharger level 3, stock rom, rooted, revolted kernel, basically same as above. Signal stable for all tests around -76 to -80db.

Excellent! Is there a link so that I can read others results and contribute mine? Reviewing others results is really the purpose of my post, so that would be very helpful.

Cool story bro.
Then since this one is already made might as well contribute.
I'll add mine here later, heads up though they're horrible.

Oh this thread's fine, it's deeply drowned by now, but it had speed-tests of every modem.

I have done some testing of the modems in the past, and found almost no difference for them for my location either, similar speeds and lack of variance to the results for the tweaks posted above. I think at least for some of us (myself included) the network just won't do any more than a certain amount. I can only postulate that if that is the case, it doesnt matter what kind of modem, tweaks, rom, etc you have. I am pretty jealous of those folks who tried modem a b or c and significantly increased their 3g speeds (and would be jazzed to actually see that data from speedtest trial runs). I think for my location, what you see up there is what I got, reguardless. That being said, look for results for modems sometime soon.
I'm just interested in seeing some actual results from different locations using the same testing method. I know that my format isn't truly scientifically sound, but I don't want to, nor would I dream of asking anyone else to, do 100 trials of each of those for each and somehow elaborately control every other possible variable, but by controlling the variables the best we can, it will produce relatively reasonable results.
Running cm7 I found my unturbocharged 3g settings were best, always over 1mbps for download

Coming from someone who got 50 kbps (yeah, that's right, friggin dial-up) for the past year.....
You learn to appreciate above 600kbps. Recently the towers in my area were upgraded
My 3G speed test just got 1609 kbps.

Thanks for the info!
Was that a single test or a run of five? What rom/kernel/tweaks are you using, if any?

I'm using Hurricane EH17, with the GPS Fix and msacik's kernel to fix reboots. Also using the EH17 modem with an EFS Clear.
If anything, data generally worked smoother in CM7, or at least SpeedTest indicated as such.
I just tested again and got:
1132/499 130ms ping
1615/454 125ms ping
1576/331 125ms ping
3G here. No 4G.
Put EH17 GB on my phone for the first time yesterday, with the EH17 modem. Data speeds seem to have taken a hit. Going to experiment with settings and post test results here in a bit.
Hi,
I have started this thread as I haven't seen any discussion forum which gives us a review on the modems being used in India.
I have tested quite a lots of modems and here are my reviews on each of them.
1. JW4 - battery life was good, lots of drops in network
2. KB3 - battery was draining like a hell in 3-4 hours almost 60-70%
3. KF1, ZSJPG, JVT- all are balancing the battery life and good network speed
4. BUJP5 - currently testing since yesterday night, amazing network speed and good battery life.
I have tested all the modems being on ICS and using them on 3g almost whole day and remaining being on WiFi.
If anyone of you came across any new modem, please post the link of the same and I will try to use it provide you the review for it (no ETA please)

Thanks to RITZYtheDEVIL for the suggestion
Lets do it in a professional way and this information will be helpful for new members coming over xda from India.
Install the app 'Network Signal Info'.
Open the app and press Menu key -> Log Mobile -> Log every 10 seconds -> Enable log file.
Press Menu key -> Screen Timeout -> 5 Minutes.
Now you have to keep your phone like this for 5 Minutes. make sure the screen stays awake and DO NOT TRY TO CLOSE/MINIMIZE THE APP. Keep it in foreground.
During these 5 Minutes it is advisable that you walk around a little bit with your phone, go into different rooms and if possible even go out of your house. Basically, don't keep standing at one place.
Press Back key -> 'YES' to exit.
Now connect your phone to PC -> in internal SD card go to folder "NetworkSignal" -> open the file in 'MS Excel'.
Enter your information in the form by 'Open Form'
If you want to view/copy all the responses in a spreadsheet then 'Open Responses'
The Google doc linked above is public and it will stay there forever, so don't worry about it. Please help make the list grow.
Kindly have a try on JVU
Provide me the link for it...

Can you please mention your location and network (in OP) as performance is network and location dependent.
Also if possible can you test with more than one networks ?

You seem to have covered quite a few modems. Thank you for that. I've tried a few myself and am tempted to recommend that you try XXJVU. I've experienced excellent battery backup and network connectivity with it.

Sure i will test this too and will update the op.
Did you tried it on ics as the link you provided is on custom rom 2.3.6

UCKF1 — Signal ranges between -70 dBm to -85 dBm. Battery life good.
DDJV5 — -60 dBm to -80 dBm. Battery life good.
XXJVU — -50 dBm to -80 dBm. Excellent Battery Life. Best modem in my opinion.
XXJVT — Same as XXJVU.
I have noticed the XX series so far has given the best signal reception and battery life.
Please note, if you are using a 3G network in India, signal reception would be average everywhere. And the signal would keep fluctuating between 3G and 2G. Hence, hardly all 5 bars.
The above readings have been done on 2G network mode.
A very important thing:
Most people think the modem is the primary drainer of the battery. It's NOT. You have to use a good kernel too. I have used a variety of kernels on CM9 and have figured out that Semaphore is the best kernel. Devil3 is the next. Stock kernel sucks for battery life.

Thanks...one last question on this. If I want to go back to the stock then how do I switch ? I read somewhere that flashing a nightly will not revert to the stock radio. I was in US last week, I got much better battery performance with stock radio as compared to what I get in india.

Just take the note of one which you are using right now by going to settings-> About Phone -> Baseband version.
Whenever you want to go back just flash the appropriate modem version by downloading.

Thanks mate for the above link however I think we are aware of those modems and few of them are not going to work in India and few are from old firmwares.
I am only trying those which are newer as there is no point in testing old firmwares which are already outdated.
Hope this makes sense...
Is there an xda link which provide the download link of all ics modem for i9000 (including stock modem)?

No, I haven't tried XXJVU modem with an ICS rom. When I was using an ICS rom, I went with the default modem that came with it. Never did experiment much with custom rom's.
Edit: Apurv24's post carries the link to it - XXJVU - the 2nd one; appears to be listed under ICS. I'm not sure about the risks and compatibility either.
No prob i will give it a try.

So far I have noticed XXJVU gives the best signal reception almost all over India. I'm from Pune.
I have traveled and used my SGS with ICS and XXJVU all over India(North, East and South) apart from my home town Pune and have got excellent signal reception (-50 dBm to -75 dBm).
Please note that this is over a 2G network of Vodafone. I also have a 3G plan but when I shift to the 3G networks the signal reception starts fluctuating and gives a horrible 1 or 2 bars.
If you are going to use 3G networks in India, you will face issues with signal reception. Most cities in India have horrible 3G connectivity—metros included.
All in all, XXJVU gives me excellent 2G coverage all over India on my SGS i9000 with ICS and Semaphore kernel.
Battery usage is decided by a lot of factors apart from the modem—Kernel plays a major role in battery usage too.
