hey all, i was wondering if anyone had any information on the SGSII potentially coming to T-Mobile in the US. I read online that we might not get an actual SGSII and the we might get the Hercules and i've also heard that the Hercules will be the T-Mo version of the SGSII. I really would love to get one so i'm just hoping that they come stateside.

The Hercules is a variant of the U.S. market Infuse with a dual-core TI SoC. What other features it has haven't been confirmed. It's due out in September. T-Mobile won't be getting a version of the SGS2.

You'd only get EDGE data speeds. Your only hope for a version that works on T-Mobile's bands is if Wind Canada gets one. But the Canadian's on the forum have said it's a Bell Canada exclusive so it's a long shot.

Just got SGS2, it is connected to t-mobile usa, and it does only get EDGE speeds, and no HSPA+.
I can still keep it for trying out stuff for a bit, and would install any custom mods to try. If won't work, I may want to return it.
Is Wind Canada the only one with HSPA+ which is an option here?
There is no way to add only that support on top of a stock android?
The other feature that's needed to make it an excellent offering it T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling.
Any suggestions?
Ok, got an att sim and hspa+ works getting 6mbit downloads wih sgs2 now. Will only have that sim for test for three days. Though att is definitly costlier than tmobile for data and phone plans and they charge for overage rather than throttle.
Still my preference would be to hspa+ on tmobile, get tmobile wifi calling to work etc.
Also noted that tmobile wifi calling wont show as an app that backup software can see.

I don't see AT&T being quite more expensive unless you really need the unlimited minutes. Otherwise you could get the medianet plan since the S2 isn't detected as a smartphone, which will solve your data problem for overages.
On tmobile i pay $25 for 'unlimited' data which means after 5gb it is throttled. I am on a no contract plan. Price for contract plan is $30 for the same data plan.
If i dont pay for overage its great. Yet them not recognizing it as smartphone may not hold for too long, as us flavors of s2 are being prepared.
While it does last that they dont recognise it as a smartphone, are you also on smallest data plan and pay the minimum?

There is an unlimited non smartphone data plan in att for just $15 and many of us are on that plan.
We do get hspa+ speeds on this plan. Pretty good deal compared to tmobile.

I just bought an unlocked SGSII http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875176292 from Newegg on "sale." It states that it has UMTS 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz.
I thought T-mobile used 900 and 2100. Can anyone explain why it doesn't work with T-mobile?

T-mobile uses 1700 and 2100, not 900 and 2100.

Rrr, guess i missed the same point about tmobile's bands. There was a list of the 4 freauencies and no distinction of which one is for voice, data etc.
So running a speed test using AnTuTu benchmark clearly shows sgsii is a great pick performance wise as it is dominating the charts. Though that app lack a distinction for original cpu speeds. I may overclock it if i get time as its a fun game, thouhgh not right now.
Data plan wise, on att usa, you are on $15 for non smartphone. The its ar their mercy, and they could identify sgsii as smartphone anytime in which case we'd loose that excellent option, right?
Now got my previous smartphone, mytouch 4g with tmobile on a family plan. And that one would likely not fit on att hspa+ eigher. I can validate it later with my test card from att.
Phone plan wise att family starts at $69 for 700 min for two lines, and they also got 550 min unadvertized for $10 less. This is still $10 above t mobile base for family at $49, yet no big deal if att data is cheaper at $15 with the mentioned 'non smartphone' option.
With att data on hspa+, you vuys easily use the mobile access point without limitations? Have anyone tried vpning and working on that, remote desktop to work machine for a significant time, full working day, etc?
With my att test sim, hspa+ downloads are fine, anywhere from 1.5 to 6 mbits, uploads sometimes were slow around 300

To save you and everyone else the trouble, as of now:
- There is no AT&T phone that supports HSPA+ on T-Mobile's network
- There is no T-Mobile phone that supports HSPA+ on AT&T's network
- There is no unbranded phone that supports HSPA+ on T-Mobile and AT&T, you have to pick one or the other. The SGS2 does not support, and most likely will never support, T-Mobile's funky AWS bands.
The Hercules is rumored to have AT&T's bands. So was the G2X and it didn't.

To maintain at least HSPA+ speeds, I can either Of two options:
- keep sgsii, move to AT&T, find how to migrate another existing smartphone since my tough 4g won't work with AT&T's data. *Maybe sell it and get another AT&T phone.
- return sgsii and stay on tmobile.
Have talked to AT&T support, and they confirmed that data plans for non smartphones begin at $10. *And that sgsii does not show as anything in their systems now neither a smartphone nor a non-smartphone. *And that it is correct that they can't guarantee anything about not identifying it as a smartphone in future.
So the best chance of the $15 data for non smartphones to last is if we get lucky enough that when they do launch the us AT&T version of sgsii, then the international one will be left out.
I am not exactly clear why the $15 non smartphone plan is needed over the $10 one. *Though, cant test too much with my AT&T temp sim, as they didn't want to change the plan the store gave me due to being on a trial period.
Still got today to try att sim out and can return with no fees, so will call or step by the store and check if that would be possible. *One challenge is that they already saw the phone and got excited, and listed it as a smartphone plan. * ..., we'll see how it goes...
Then I am also reading that AT&T talks about a dual LTE/HSPA+ support, yet that lte may take time to be battery friendly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162330&page=2). *
So possibly waiting for LTE to mature is not practical, in which case maybe no point in waiting for AT&T us version of sgsii which may only add LTE.
Coming from tmobile hspa+ usage since nov 2010, now when testing AT&T, it is more influenced from during the day traffic and speeds are slower vs faster speeds at less conventional hours. *Also seeing some sporadic speed tests issues coming from another device using the wifi hotspot - usually the upload, sometimes download too is near zero speed. *While most speed tests are decent. *Then have not seen any of that on tmobile.
One issue making me consider moving to AT&T is that tmobiles speeds in my new place are very bad for hspa+ if it at all it gets an*hspa signal. *Used to never need wifi and get consistent 4-6 mbits downloads ..., now getting even 1 from tmobile is a challenge.
Then, would like fast Internet when traveling overseas. *And tmobiles phone worked well last time with fast speeds. * Then I have seen some mentioning that tmobiles bands could be better for world traveling than AT&T, is that so?

- The $10 plan requires an unlimited messaging plan. The $15 plan is a stand-alone.
- The carrier versions of the SGS2 will have different model numbers and a different series of IMEI codes so I doubt that would effect the international SGS2 in AT&T's database.
- Our SGS2 won't support LTE. But it's going to take AT&T at least a year and a half to get any meaningful LTE penetration.
- I came from T-Mobile. AT&T's HSPA+ clocks a lot slower than T-Mobile's and isn't as widely available. For some reason though, things like video buffer less for me even though the speeds clock slower.
- AT&T is far better for international travel. They have roaming data plans you can pre-purchase that are less than 1/4 of what T-Mobile charges. Also, because the SGS2 is unlocked, you can pick up a SIM locally if you want to.
I'm surprised T-Mo isn't getting the GSII, they're usually good with Android.Well, this sucks...

No offense, but they're also the smallest carrier and are in the process of going away. I'm guessing they're getting an Infuse variant instead because Samsung's got the production capacity and probably cut them a deal.

So I called T-Mobile today because they have promotional 4G rate plans right now. And I gave T-Mobile my IEMI number and according to their systems the nexus one qualify for the upgrade to their 4G network. I upgraded to it for an additional $5 dollars a month. Now to my knowledge the nexus one was not built to handle 4G band speeds but I did notice a major speed boost on my device. Maybe not a full 4G experience but definitely feels like my 3G is on steroids. Btw I'm on the EVEN MORE PLUS PLAN.

i was wondering about this because HSPA+ is just a newer version of what Tmo 3G phones use, afaik there is no change in the bands they use to communicate and it really should just be as simple as flashing a new radio to a phone to get it to be HSPA+ (aka 3.5G aka T-mobile 4G)
now i doubt that a provider will be willing to update their current phones because they want you to buy a new phone that is "for their 4G" network. its possible though that the Korean radios that have leaked may have this support in them and might explain why your seeing a speed increase.
something else you can do is go into settings>about phone>status> check mobile network type to see if it says HSDPA or HSPA+
there is also another more advanced screen that you can check but i forgot the silly #*#* code you put into access it but i know if you install the app anycut you can make a shortcut to the screen as well
with anycut just make a shortcut for "phone info" to pull up the more advanced screen.
I'm getting 2.87MBps down, and 1.30MBps up. And no I didn't do any radio update. I just told the T-Mobile I wanna switch over to 4G and they said ok and switched me over for an extra five dollars a month.

that's not HSPA+ speeds, HSPA+ speed varies from the same as HSDPA to twice as fast.

that is very good for 3G but uncommon and probably about as fast as you will ever see on HSDPA.
here in the east SF Bay area i usually get about 1.0 Mbit down on my N1 on T-mobile but the speed i see varies and depends highly on local network traffic and what my signal strength is at

N1 here and I had the original data plan that cost 24.99/mo. Old family plan I had for ages since I had the SE Xperia X1, which I still have but do not use .
I have the 3G+ speeds ever since I started using the CM roms, but I never "upgraded" the data plan for faster speed.
How much were you paying beforehand if I may ask? And was it a data plan as well?
I don't think the Nexus can handle the same speeds as the G2 or the new Mytouch 4G.
At work someone has the Mytouch 4G and we did speed test with both phone, mine is on the latest Korean radio and he's download speed was always double than my Nexus.
So again I don't think is possible.

I didn't implied you lie, what I say is they are wrong, and it's sad because I'd love to have 4G in the nexus.
I dont really understand 3g and 4g speeds, but isnt the latency more important? I dont think 3mb vs 10mb will make a huge difference on a phone, it doesnt on my desktop connection, but isnt the biggest hurdle the time to actually get the network to connect to the internet? From what i have noticed, the first website you access takes alot longer than the subsequent sites.

Depends on your usage...if you download files, then speed DOES matter, MUCH more than latency. If you simply browse, you do need a MINIMUM speed, but then latency is mucchhhh more important. I would consider 5mb a minimum speed for good browsing.
On computers, you CAN use faster speeds to access the pages faster by using pipelining...dun think phones have support for that though

Call them back and get back on the $20 preferred Android Internet plan. They misinformed you. The data plan you are on does not determine the data speed you see. There are a ton of people on HowardForums with old grandfathered $5.99 T-Zones plans and $9.99 web2go data plans getting faster speeds then what you are seeing.
You are wasting your money with any plan more expensive then the $20 preferred Android Internet plan and if you can get on a cheaper one it will work exactly the same.
It's very possible that T-mobile is throttling accounts now that they can offer faster overall speeds.
It could be a (****ty-consumer wise) way to exploit the 4g (mis)nomer.
I can tell you this I am a T-mobile RSA and I am not sure what the extra $5 amonth the guy did but there is no 4g data plan. Every Android data plan i use in the store is the same plan I give ppl on every android phone T-Mobile sells. There is no 3G or 4G plan. Every plan is the same unless you are looking at the 200mb, 2gb, unlimited plan. I would say call 611 and tell them to change it back and run speed test again. T-Mobile in the soon to be future is moving to a 3 tier data plan. By this I mean they are going to let you pick a 200mb, 2gb, and unlimited data rate plan. Every plan is going to have the same speeds but limit you to what you can download before you are throttled or start to see overages. Call and get your money back.

Same thing he said. I'm a TMobile CSR and whoever you were speaking with was trying to get a 5.00 bump on there add ons. No difference between EDGE data plans/3G data plan/4G(HSPA+) data plans. People that use the Iphone on our network pay the same 25 or 30 that people do that have 3G devices.

I'm in canada on rogers "hsdpa+, hspa, 4g, etc" and at peak hours I get 2.95 down and 1.2 up and have had up to 5.65 down 1.4 up

There hasn't been much said about how long T-Mobile's 3G service will be operational outside of T-Mobile's FAQ. Basically, it appears that their 3G, AWS spectrum should be active for at least the next year, and I'd expect even longer until LTE is ready to go. As for T-Mobile's current 3G/4G expansion, I wouldn't be surprised if they complete whatever work is already committed and then slow that down until AT&T formalizes whatever plans they have for it.
Also.im wondering about all those new line of fones ready to come out....i was looking at the htc pyramid...is it worth buying considering the att buyout

Assuming the AT&T takeover of T-Mobile is successful, I'd have thought there was absolutely zero chance of AT&T not continuing to use the AWS spectrum that T-Mo currently has, although it may decide to re-purpose it in the future. However, I doubt this would happen for several years.

AT&T announced that they are going to use the AWS spectrum for their LTE rollout, and that they will migrate T-Mobile's existing users to their current 3G/FauxG bands. So the T-Mobile Tab will lose its ability to get on 3G at some point, but by then will it really matter?

The simple economics are that TMo are still going to be signing up new customers on 2-year contracts with AWS handsets and won't be able to move to new devices that supports both AT&T and TMo bands quickly.
So, I'd guess that switching off 3G on AWS would be at least 2 years down the road from when the acquisition completes, so it is doubtful it would be an issue.

So from what I understand (which admittedly is very little) the existing Tmob towers will be re-purposed for rolling out Ma Bell's LTE coverage (within 12 months). As we all know, Ma Bell and Tmob use different broadcast frequencies for their Mobile broadband. So essentially, within a years time... those whom own a Vibrant, Vib + or any other 3g enabled Tmob smartphone... will have a very expensive edge capable device... ewwwwwwww, really !?!?!?!?!?!
Has there been any other word on this... as in compensation, grandfathering of packages (AT&T data plans blow money-wise) etc...

Vibrant is supports some AT&T's 3G bands. Most of the time, you'll be on AT&T's 3G, but you can also get kicked down to edge if the area you're in doesn't support Vibrant's 3G bands.
Nope, it does 850mhz and 1900mhz, all bands. However, I will admit the phone has issues switching between GSM and WCDMA, so I set it to WCDMA only.

This is going to be more fun than the Sprint Nextel fiasco.
I don't think there is much mystery as to what will happen. This is AT&T we are talking about, after all.
While a nice bonus, the additional subscribers to AT&T's user base is really a secondary concern. AT&T's prime target were the (leases for) T-mobile's frequencies.
AT&T's network is already overloaded (thanks in part to weak infineon radio chipsets). They need to start the roll out to LTE to compete (verizon is already ahead of them), and they know that customers will cry foul and leave if their LTE and HSPA+ phones do not get service any faster than current 3G phones (see: Motorola Atrix).
So, what will happen to T-mobile users? Simple... AT&T will honor existing contracts and arrangements *for 2G/3G service* (T-mob does not have 4G, despite the marketing), and they will issue T-mobile users new phones (some discounted, I am sure) for use on AT&T's existing network.
What does this mean for T-mobile customers? Say good-bye to being able to answer a phone call at a concert or college football game. Being on the largest network means having to share bandwith/frequency with the largest number of users. They will fight for service with all those people with sh*tty iphone antennae.
Slower data, locked down Android phones, and higher rates for service if you want to sign a new agreement are what will inevitably happen. Current AT&T customers probably won't notice a difference unless they get an LTE phone (in which case they will get the faster data and non-overloaded service that T-mobile customers are used to).
T-mo 3G coverage will get better in smaller towns & cities, but this isn't much of an advantage for me since I live in a large city.
I hope that if that happens and I can't use my phone in their network, I'm given the option of just cancel my contract...

Really don't think so. FCC documents only say 1900MHz for 3G. Who knows though?
I just hope we can continue to use smartphones on prepaid plans. That's really why I left Ma Bell.

I don't think there is much mystery as to what will happen. This is AT&T we are talking about, after all.
While a nice bonus, the additional subscribers to AT&T's user base is really a secondary concern. AT&T's prime target were the (leases for) T-mobile's frequencies.
AT&T's network is already overloaded (thanks in part to weak infineon radio chipsets). They need to start the roll out to LTE to compete (verizon is already ahead of them), and they know that customers will cry foul and leave if their LTE and HSPA+ phones do not get service any faster than current 3G phones (see: Motorola Atrix).
So, what will happen to T-mobile users? Simple... AT&T will honor existing contracts and arrangements *for 2G/3G service* (T-mob does not have 4G, despite the marketing), and they will issue T-mobile users new phones (some discounted, I am sure) for use on AT&T's existing network.
What does this mean for T-mobile customers? Say good-bye to being able to answer a phone call at a concert or college football game. Being on the largest network means having to share bandwith/frequency with the largest number of users. They will fight for service with all those people with sh*tty iphone antennae.
Slower data, locked down Android phones, and higher rates for service if you want to sign a new agreement are what will inevitably happen. Current AT&T customers probably won't notice a difference unless they get an LTE phone (in which case they will get the faster data and non-overloaded service that T-mobile customers are used to).
T-mo 3G coverage will get better in smaller towns & cities, but this isn't much of an advantage for me since I live in a large city.

i think t-mobile does a great job in coverage, i get full service in my neighborhood but i dont get 3g service, maybe this will help? if not i just want to cancel my contract and switch to verizon
After the merger is done and the network has switched over...Worse case, I hope to unlock, pop in a AT&T SIM continue to use my Vibrant mostly like nothing has changed. I don't know what effect flashing a Captivate modem would have. I'm not worried...yet.
I think AT&T might make a transitional phase (2-4yrs) for T-mobile existing customers(no new AWS phones) before switching all T-mobile network to AT&T frequencies.

I hope sprint gets it! I never had and never will have at&t.... I price checked with at&t a few days ago.. 210 dollars for 2 unlimited lines!?!? Data capped at 2Gigs.. And 10 bucks for every gig used after!? I pay 140 for two fully loaded vibrants. . Fack at&t

Same Here. I have been with T-mobile for 7 years now and even though I moved from a "4G" area to an area where I only get Edge, i still have stayed with T-Mob, but I am hoping we get the option to cancel our contracts because that Thunderbolt from Verizon is looking good. My co-worker has one and let me mess with it and it is nice.

T-Mobile has a better "4G" than AT&T does. Their HSPA+ is faster than AT&T's.

Completely agree with the article.
They are allowing AT&T to be a monopoly again,after all the work it took to destroy the monopoly.The FCC should shot down this deal period.
I am from Israel and I am coming to the States on the next Monday. I need a sim with unlimited data, and about 100 minutes of talk and some messages.. I also need wifi tethring option to tether my tablet and laptop. I cant decide which carrier to choose. T mobile daily plan sounds nice but there are others like h2o, net10... Any suggestions?

I would get the T-Mobile $30 unlimited data and texting with 100 minutes. The $3 a day plan is also a good option if you're going to use under 200MB a day.
All the plans AT&T MVNO's(H2o, Red Pocket, etc) have low data allowances and cost more than T-Mobile.
AT&T has 250 minutes and unlimited texting for $25 a month. You can add data for $25 a GB.

You should make sure your phone supports the AWS band (also known as band IV) for 3G before going on T-Mobile or band II or V for AT&T 3G.
T-Mobile checks UA string to detect tethering, so you will need to spoof it in your browser settings to get around it. Not sure about AT&T or any MVNO, however.
Would strongly suggest T-Mobile if your phone supports it and you plan to stay in a metro area. Otherwise, go with an AT&T MVNO.
While I have not had any experience with T-Mobile, all of my past experience with AT&T has been horrid. I would not recommend them for prepaid or postpaid usage

As much as I would agree (I hate calling people who I know are on AT&T because the calls drop frequently), T-Mobile's 3G coverage is much smaller than AT&T's 3G coverage - leaving AT&T as the only GSM option in some areas. That said, if you spend most of your time in or around major cities, T-Mobile is superior both on performance and price.
I have LG P500, it has quad band and tri band.. should it work with T Mobile? I will be in major cities like NYC, Philly, DC...

You won't be able to get 3G from any US carrier with that phone. It supports 900 / 2100 for 3G and none of the networks over here support those 3G frequencies.
You'll be on 2G no matter which carrier you choose.

Nope. T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 together. You can't just use 2100 on T-Mobile.
The international Milestone has the same bands as your P500. The US Milestone supports AT&T 3G.

The problem with the T-Mobile $30 unlimited data (up to 5Gb) plan is you won't be able to use any data on Edge and they don't really have 4G anywhere unless your phone does WCDMA on 1700Mhz then it will work at T-Mobile stores but that's all. You will need a newer Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3 phone to take advantage of 3G service on T-Mobile.

When the OP made the thread and mentioned T-Mobile, I figured he had a T-Mobile compatible phone. If you reqd the post above, you'd see I pointed out that T-Mobile 3G/4G wouldn't work on his phone.
But, don't have to be at a T-Mobile store to get 4G. That's absurd. Also, there's no need for a new T-Mobile phone to get fast data, any T-Mobile 3G phone will work.

I disagree, it may sound absurd until you realize they don't really have any 4G network anyplace but they need service inside the stores so they can display the phones working. In the Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale areas the only place you can get 4G on T-Mobil is in or near the T-Mobil stores where they have a 5 bar signal. They claim they aren't using an amp or anything but if you leave the store and go down the street a few blocks there's no signal and it's not available anywhere else.
As for saying "any T-Mobile 3G phone will work" you know they haven't sold 3G phones since 2010, right? None of the new Samsung 4G phones can get 3G either, at least none of the ones I looked at in the store could get it since they don't have an option for HSPA or HSPA+, just GSM and WCDMA with nothing in between.

I get T-Mobile 4G all over Alabama, miles away from the T-Mobile store. I also travel yearly to TN, LA, MI, and GA, and I get T-Mobile 4G in those states as well.

All T-Mobile smartphones phones are capable of 3G. You confusing T-Mobile 4G with LTE. T-Mobile doesn't have LTE, and their 4G network is nothing more than fast 3G. The icon in the corner of your screen might only show 4G, but there are many instances where it's actually getting 3G I get 3G with my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile.
You really need to do some serious research.
Lets try and keep this on topic of the thread bout sim card and not go off about how good the actual networks are etc.
The fact of the matter is, you'll only get 3G/4G (HSPA+) on AT&T and AT&T MNVO's. If OP needs fast data, I'd recommend a Straight Talk AT&T-Compatible SIM from http://straighttalk.com. It's $50 for a month of unlimited everything (just don't go too crazy with data). When you fill in the APN, ignore any proxy fields except for "MMS Proxy".

His phone runs on 900MHz and 2100MHz, doesn't AT&T 3G run on 850MHz and 1900MHz?
Oh wow, he has some funky frequencies. He'll need a different phone for 3G/4G on any network then. Basic functions and EDGE should work though.

Needed a little help currently here in the good old U.S.A and on verizon wireless i am thinking about switching carriers one reason is my phone of choice is the Htc One, also thinking of switching because of the things that i can do on some of the other networks here in the states like talk and surf at the same time not only on 4g lte but also on 3g hspa+, which is another thing that i liked because if im in an area that 4g lte is not available i can fall back on hspa+ which is faster than verizon cdma 3g network that tops out at 1.5-2mb down and .4mb up.
The reason why i am holding on to verizon is that I have unlimited data no throttling or data overages and I am planning to buy my phones at full retail to keep me out of contracts with these companies and also keep my unlimited data because i use alot of data i mean 8gb a month avaerage over 4months i guess if i stay with verizon i would have to settle for the samsung plastic s4 or wait for the google x phone. just want to hear some opinions or advice thanks in advance.
Sprint is your only option for unlimited data. They don't have HSPA, but are substantially cheaper than Verizon.
I just switched from Verizon to ATT yesterday coming from Unlimited as well.
I switched mainly because of the lack of service in my area of work and lack of availability of phones. Does going from Unlimited to 5Ggb suck, yes, but I also have service where I work and will be able to get the beloved HTC One. I'll just need to keep an eye on my usage from now on.
I pay $10 for every GB I go over which doesn't sound too bad to me.

When my unlocked HTC One arrives I will trim the sim and use it.
I'm joining my fiance's AT&T plan here in NY, there data for two lines isn't horrible. $150 for Unlimited Talk/Text and 4GB shared data for $150 for a few business/pleasure phones isn't too bad, she's paying $100 a month for her non-smartphone though, ****ing crazy!

you order the HTC One on locked can you provide link plz, and i did not even think about staright talk that looks really promising same network as AT&T unlimited calls and text plus data unlimited? now im sure they throttle usage over a certain amount just not sure what that amount of data would be.

It does but HTC One 801e I have ordered does not have frequencies that are needed with T-Mobile.

Then I say Sprint. They are about 90% done with their Network Vision upgrade in Chicago.
You can visit Sensorly.com so that you can see how their LTE coverage is in your area.
