Whats the probability of bricking my phone if I root it and install some apps vs rooting it and installing roms? I tried to look around for info on this and found an article on another site that says it's kind hard to brick a phone since there are 3 safety measures in place? Sorry, a tad paranoid here, first smart phone.
close to 0 unless you really start to do some really wrong things
Its tough to be beyond recovery. The only surefire way I've seen is clicking "phone" instead of "pda" in odin. This forum is great and everyone is very helpful. Before flashing a new rom, read a much as possible. You should be fine.

ok thanks, is it easy to flash to stock? I saw the way to do it in odin wasn't sure if there is something even easier.
The probability of bricking your phone if inversely proportionate to the amount of reading you do before you flash something!
If you stick to the proven, tested, well documented stuff and read, then re-read, the directions you will be fine.
If this is your first android device, I would strongly encourage reading a lot and a few times before attempting...Fascinate is a bit different from other android devices as well the way the system works...I have had eris, droid, incredible and the x...and with the fascinate still read and re-read everything before attempting. One tiny missed step could cause hours of hassle and recovery time...
Just to give you some directions...here are good threads to read:
-ROOT, Recovery, Update and More...
-How to flash Voodoo Kernels and more...
Also, don't be afraid to ask questions... it's always better to ask, then mess something up.

I want to root the phone to get rid of annoying bing and install the wireless tethering app. Then I wanted to install voodoo to hopefully fix the lag which I sometimes get. I'm just concerned about the ease of reverting to stock. I am kinda interested in custom roms or themes but not entirely sure of the benefits of the roms or the safety of installing either.
On a side note dang how did you afford all the phones or did you just trade them up as you went?

I have 3 lines with vzw, so I do have updates once in a while
My eris, I had less than 30 days and traded it in for droid...then sold droid on ebay and bought the incredible....then returned the incredible within 60 days because of bad battery and poor call quality....then got the x...well the x was just too big, so i returned it and bought an incredible off ebay... that one was actually perfect...and finally got the fascinate with one of line upgrades...and sold incredible .....that's quite a history now that I look at it
As far as mods, follow the links I posted above...on the voodoo one, definitely read and re-read to make sure you understand and won't miss steps. If anything, you can always restore back to stock using odin...although hoping you will not end up to need it.

I went from eris to droid to fascinate. I took a gamble on ebay by starting the bid on a fascinate at $175. I won it for the initial bid and sold my droid on craigslist for $200 so I actually made money getting a better phone. Win.

Ah alright, yeah the plan is to not need it unless I have to take the phone in for some reason xD. Right now I just realized I'm not sure how to get this damn hard case I bought off the phone... anyway is odin the only way to unroot?

I have just switched over to verizon from AT&T a couple of days ago. It was an impulse decision as I was only in the Verizon store with my girlfriend to get a her a new phone. I was showing the sales guy my pimped out Samsung Captivate and explaining to him him how easily these things can be manipulated and how much I loved my Cappy. Thats the last thing I remember. I woke up to find I had switched my service (3 lines) over to Verizon and I was now the owner of a Droid X.
I loved my Captivate and had no thoughts of ever switching but they had a promotion going on that blew my AT&T plan out of the water so financially it was a good decision. But I am beginning to wonder if I haven't made a mistake.
Out of the box, the DX is rebooting pretty often. I had planned on getting on here when I got home to find the latest and greatest ROM anyway so I didn't worry about it too much.
I am currently running Liberty 1.0 as my first flash. That is of course after flashing .340 which I read may or may not fix the rebooting issue. I am liking the ROM but the random reboots still persist. Its beginning to get too much to bare as I have yet to have one phone conversation that isn't interrupted by the phone powering down by itself.
I have searched for any word of a fix for this but I haven't found any definitive answers other than to do a factory reset. I have done that several times, as well as reflashing .340 and Liberty to no avail.
Before I take 3 phones back to Verizon and crawl back to AT&T and beg for forgiveness does anyone have a definitive solution for this?
Its worth mentioning that I bought my daughter a DX as well to replace her Cappy (she is NOT happy BTW), and it does the same thing. It is still stock out of the box.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
I have a Dx and haven't had this reboot issue, however, my sister traded in her iPhone for an x on my advice and now she's having the same issue you are. I was going to have her flash to liberty and do a system restore but obviously that hasn't worked for you. Hopefully someone will have an answer to this problem

Send the phones back to Verizon, that is not normal.
In my opinion, not to say you don't know what you are doing which I am sure you are, I know you are well aware of the risks of flashing roms.
I hear more people having issues with Droid Xs that have been re-ROMed, flashed, themed, etc, then I do people with stock DXs that are rooted and cleaned up of bloat.
While my DX might not be clean out the box, it's still in prestine shape, rooted and even flashed to Cricket. I have never had a single issue with it unless I am bricking it or messing with it myself.
A lot of times, people mistake the phone as the issue. These were $600 phones when released, still are (give and take a few bucks lol). I doubt the issue is hardware. Send it back to VZW or try the Full SBF 320 using RSD Lite. It's been the talk of the town.
Could be that there's a bad batch of DXs going around that have just been released? None the less, VZW can get you replacement DXs over night practially.
Sbf to stock and reflash liberty. Or take it back a get a new phone.

Ben you are right about people messing up phones by flashing. But generally taking them back to stock will fix any issues that have risen from tinkering.
My issue is that mine did it out of the box. My daughters did as well.
Funny thing is just this morning I updated my daughters with the .340 update and it seems to have stopped. Its been quiet now for about the last 30 minutes. I reflashed .340 on mine at the same time and it has rebooted about 4 times while I type this message. Maybe my daughters is fixed, but mine is definitely not right.
Thanks for the comments.
My sisters phone is also doing this bone stock. It doesn't always reboot sometimes it locks up and she has to pull the battery. She's taken it into the Verizon store and they reset it to stock (not sure exactly what they did). That didn't fix it so she took it back to exchange it and they told her " that's normal, sometimes you have to pull the battery." So they wouldn't exchange it.

Sadly this is has been a small issue with the DX, it's been posted many times. Mine did it when I first got it back in August and at first I was blaming Handcent on the reboots. Then for some reason it just stopped and I have never seen it reboot on it's own. Was it the update to 2.2 or removing Handcent? I've reinstall Handcent since so I honestly I don't know. Side note I still blame Handcent on the phones lag because when I uninstall it the screen redraws and the lag goes away.
Anyway there is a great big long thread on this at the Moto DX forums and Matt's (forum admin) advice was to return the phone for a new one. I would arm myself with a printed copy of the thread in case Verizon wants to throw a fit.
For the record I just dig this phone. I'm stock, rooted with just bloat frozen. It's been a great phone after the teething problems were solved.

What would be a good cheap upgrade (out of pocket) from Droid X? My wife doesnt have an upgrade until April '13 and her Droid X is so sluggish. It is so slow I cant see how she uses it. Was thinking of buying her a used Iphone 4 or 4s in the interim and then getting her a 4g device in April.

LOL, yes. Wish I had found another way than what i did. I flashed over baseband and radio. No data, could not activate. Bricked the phone, then reflashed 13 different ways but Sunday and finally I have her phone all set up with Liquid Smooth 3.0 and am just trying to get 3G back up and running. It is like a new phone. Hopefully this will last her until her April 2013 VZW upgrade......

Good to hear you got it recovered. Not sure why but my 3g was off when I first flashed Liquid Smooth too. I had to go into the Settings and mess around to get it back..

Hey everyone. I really don't know how to say this, nor do I think anyone will even care because I'm practically a ghost to the forums, but I just wanted to make a thread and thank everyone here from the past and present for the good year and a half-or so that I've been here on the E4G forums. Last night while randomly browsing some Sprint forums for the Galaxy Nexus (I just love to peek at other phones to see what's going on with them), I came across a post saying you can text the word 'upgrade' to the number 1311 to find out if your eligible for an upgrade or not. While this may be common knowledge to the masses, I did not know this and texted the number. Low and behold, I was indeed eligible for an upgrade! With that being said, money was definitely an issue here because I am flat broke, so my upgrade options were limited. From Sprint's website I could choose from a free SGS3, an LG Optimus G, or a Sprint Vital. And maybe something else I'm forgetting. I planned on going with the S3 because it had the most developer support from anything else listed. However, I went to a Sprint store, and it was only free for a new line. That, and also the only free phones Sprint offered me from the store was a Sprint Vital, or a iPhone 4S.
So I went to Best Buy. They offered me a few more options, a couple being the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G (Which has NO support whatsoever), the Vital once again, and the Optimus G. So... I went with the Optimus G. I've been reading that is pretty much a branded/skinned Nexus 4.
Its definitely...... Nice. Fast as all **** most definitely, fluid, and sexy. The development for the LGOG is kinda weak at best, but it's getting there. There's CM10.1 builds for it, as well as some AOKP builds, so there's that. I definitely need to get a screen protector and case for it though.
Alright, this is way longer than I wanted it to be, so I'm gonna end it here. Thanks for all the roms and memories guys. I'll still be around because the LGOG Dev scene is kinda whack at the moment, and I plan on holding on to my Epic for quite a while. So...... Yeah, lol.
Stay gold, everyone.

Man... I wish I could've gotten a GNex or something >_<
Rooting this thing has been nothing but a complete pain in ass. While there is a sort of a one click root kinda thing, which did work, it was finnicky as hell. And after that, throwing on a custom rom is even worse. It really seems like a 50/50 chance the ROM will boot, not because of user error, but because the phone really just seems unstable and not rom-friendly like our good old Epics are. I dunno, maybe because this phone is still relatively new or something, but this is definitely the biggest headache I've come across with Android at all. :banghead:
The stock rom is retardedly fast and fluid, yes, but this thing needs an AOSP rom on it.
Sent from my LePanII using xda app-developers app
I think I remember reading somewhere that there's some sort of hardware mod to basically make it a nexus 4. Like use Nexus 4 radios, Roms, etc. Only I'm not sure if such a mod would exist.
Never mind, only gsm versions can do it, I totally forgot about that part.

Yeah I seen that mod in the AT&T OG forums, and it looked pretty damn sweet. I finally got my OG running a CM10.1 build, so I practically have a Nexus 4 at this point
The only thing I've noticed about the AOSP roms is an extremely low signal reading, no matter where I am. Us always either at two bars or one, haven't seen 3 or above not once. But as long as it doesn't actually affect data speeds or calls I guess, lol.

Sitting at Verizon, gonna return my turbo for a HTC One M8 simply because 1 week of having to view ads and not being able to run rooted programs is driving me ****ing nuts. Good luck guys, I can't justify the off contract price for a device that may never even see root. Sob....
Well..........

Interesting choice. I came from the M8 and can't believe you would prefer that phone myself but to each their own. Good luck man.
Why are people so damn impatient? The phone just came out. If you had a history with Motorola phones then you know they will end up being rooted. I always root my phones but can wait until a root comes out for it. Anyway have fun downgrading because of something so menial.

Best phone out there, I can't believe your impatience is getting you such a huge downgrade.
I have the m8 now and it's one of the biggest regrets I've ever made. The build is beautiful, but thats where it ends. Camera is terrible, battery life is terrible, performance has the typical htc 6 month frame and then you have to format and start fresh again. I'd def reconsider that choice, next week I'll be getting the turbo. My wife got hers about a week ago and I cannot say how jealous I am.

Wow really? I also have the M8 and I easily get a day on a full charge, its always siper smooth, even when I have power saver on. I use Bluetooth to stream all my music. I can agree with you on the camera being mediocre, but it has otherwise been one of the greatest phone experiences I've had yet.
I'll also just say there are too many people here expecting too much and cry when it isn't instantly given to them. Don't buy a phone expecting someone to root it. Accept it for what it is and remember root is a bonus.
Im being patient myself but, hot damn, I want voice and data simultaneously. f root, give me that and ill be content for a bit.

I agree some people expect to much from a phone. There will always be a downside to each smart phone. I to was thinking about returning my Turbo and maybe get the z3 or Note 4. But I've always loved Motorola phones. Great build, voice, reception, battery. I've owned a note series before but I've always had problems with either the wifi or the GPS not locking on.
This is by far the best phone I've owned. Love it. I'm just glad I never returned it this past Friday.

To be fair , He's cheating a broken system where it should be illegal for a carrier to ask you to pay extra to unlock a function of the data you already pay for.
It will be illegal for them to charge for tether if the net neutrality push goes anywhere, or if the FCC can begin to classify this stuff under title 2.

Ya I know it sounds crazy, but I'm just not a fan. I've had htc devices that go back to the Titan, diamond, hero, evo, thunderbolt, rezound, etc,. This phone is the biggest let down and it may just be me on this, but man its just too finicky. It absolutely offers no protection as well.. if this thing touches water, your done. I think sense ui has major issues and starts to get corrupt after a period of time. I had this same issue with all of my htc devices. Go back to my Samsung nexus, g2 or even my note 3 and i've never experienced this.

C) it wasn't a hack, someone stole something from moto.
There is no reason to believe that will happen again
Also sunshine only works on specific versions of the OS and won't work on the latest versions. The next advertised sunshine update does not include support for the latest firmware. As of the last time I checked. Good luck with root in lollipop. .
