GPS-Bug after OTA-Update 2.50.xx.x - Desire HD General

Hello. After the update (vodafone branding) the GPS does not work anymore. There are no satellites found and after finishing maps GPS is still active and seeking. Only a complete restart help to end GPS. A software reset has brought nothing. Any ideas?
Thanks Chris

Hi.
I do not have this problem.
Why don`t you try to download RUU and reflash via your PC?
Maybe this will help.

Exactly the same here. Contacted Vodafone and was given a numer to talk to HTC. Currently they are looking into the probem so no resolution yet!

Sorry mate, did not read you are using vodafone.
In this case wait for an update with fix.
Cheers.

Oops - not updated my signature lately.
This should be correct now

Confirmed on mine too. Used GPS Test and it just couldnt find anything. Any way to downgrade?

Me too! Well at least initially.
The GPS appeared to be dead, not finding any satellites. However I left it on using GPSTest and after about 5-10 minutes it eventually started to find satellites and then improved in accuracy over the next couple of minutes. Much the same way as you would get from a completely cold boot, when the phone doesn't know where on the globe it is. I did a couple of reboots after I first read this thread. Just took a drive and it seems to navigate okay as well.
Unfortunately I had already fired an email off to HTC telling them I was displeased. At least it may make them get something sorted out for those with no GPS at all by adding to the complaints file.
I had a vague hope that the OTA update was preparing the DHD for an unlocked bootloader.

Can we restrict it to certain devices?
Are affected only branded devices, even when using different providers?
There are only old or newly purchased equipment?
After all, some have no problem with GPS.

mine have the same problem.vodafone

Mine to, O2 Germany

Hi,
I have the same problem. My Desire HD are of Vodafone Spain.

With GPS status, downloaded satellite's data, fix faster then the older rom, 8/8 satellites, and google maps works fine.
I have an unbranded dhd.
What's the problem?

Vodafone DHD (NL), no GPS after update.
Hard resets didn't help either.

A cold start can take up to 10mn if you have a poor reception.
Did you try with GPS Status and downloaded the A-GPS data before trying to launch google maps?
Those who did that seemed to have it working again...

I don't get a fix after >30min's. Did everything hard reset, gps status, agps....
Looks like it's only some branded phones that have the problem.

I would like try to download RUU and reflash via PC, but where is RUU?

hi guys
I have the same problem
vodafone ireland
any news about this?

No GPS here after the update too..non brand Desire HD I have..Czech Republic

After Update no Gps Signal!! HELP

Hello!
Can anyone pls help me i have made an Update on my x1 to the Generic de r2 Rom, and now do dont get a gps signal anymore. I have tried it with igo8 and there was no signal and i also tried it with goggle maps -- Same result.
Even some hard resets dont solve the problem, does anybody know how i can get my Gps Signal back?
Thank you
Sorry I don't know how to get your GPS signal back, but I am happy to hear that more people than me are having problems with the new ROMs . I do have GPS, but no bluetooth! Hard reset and reflash doesn't work. I have tried swedish and UK rom. Same result.
My guess (=hope) is that there is a reason that these new ROMs aren't official yet, and that SE will work out the bugs before the official release (which should be any day now if one is to believe various sources on the net).

These releases are OFFICIAL and come either directly from the service centre update service (EMMA) requiring RUU or the Memory Card bootload method, or like most regular people from the Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) which you can download from their site.
I read just the opposite opinion on ROM thread where is stated that UK_Generic is not at SEUS yet...
Weird, my GPS works worlds better after the update than before.
I am also having problems with GPS after updating to the new generic UK ROM.
I cant save my external GPS settings (hardware) found at settings>external GPS. Google maps says cant detect GPS hardware. My GPS used to work with the old ROM.
One problem I have found with flashing to a new cooked ROM is the country location. Sometimes the regional settings has set the country to US instead of UK. For some reason this prevents the GPS getting the right sattelites.
So check under start/settings/system/regional settings to make sure it's pointing at the right country
Try these settings
COM pot 2
bitrate 9600
I soft reset my phone and tried these settings, now it works....
Did they change the GPS ports with firmware?

GPS on Bell HTC touch stopped working

Hello Guys,
I have a htc touch (vogue) from bell. I upgraded it with the bell rom on htc site one year ago. The GPS has worked ever since. However, it stopped working last friday. In google map, it is always "seeking for satellit (0)". I tried htc gps tool, I can see some (3~6) sat in view. I can even get some gps position data (eg. $GPGGA,120214.50,4531.116641,N,07339.266674,W,0,00,1.0,0.0,M,,,,*23) but not able to fix it. I also tried hard reset and re-installing the same rom/radio. It will not come back. Can somebody help me out?
Thanks a lot

Did you check the windows Settings to see if you're still in com4 with 4800 bauds?
Yes. It is always com4 and 4800.
Have you confirmed that location is still on?
You may want to try backing up your data and re-flashing the original Bell ROM to see if it changes/resets anything. A number of variables are possible with what you described.

I played a little bit with the registry setting. It looks like the gps location I posted above is not my location but a place about one mile from my place, most likely a location of the cell phone tower nearby. I mean that information may comes from agps. I lost the location when I changed the registry gpsmode to 1.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will try to find the cd with the old bell rom which I really have no idea where it is. As a backup, is there a bell old rom I can use online? I just do not want to play around with the unlock thing.

Go to HTC's site, look up the HTC Touch and go to Support, you should find Software Updates and Bell should be listed as one. They're hosting the latest ROM, I'd suggest flashing that.
I am also with Bell and having the exact same problem since the weekend. I have been running NFSFAN's latest rom for the last few months. I figured it might be a temporary glitch on Bell's part, but please let us know if reverting back to the Bell firmware restores your GPS.

LOL...so i'm not the only one too!
I thought I screwed up my phone after flashing to android (nand) and the GPS wouldn't work, so i flashed back to nfsfan's rom. It didn't work, so I just flashed to stock...and it didn't help, hence I though I screwed up my phone gps, and came to post about this.
Little did I know....it may not actually be me...
Let us know when it starts to work...
A-GPS server from Bell appears to be down.
If you open up GPSViewer on NFSFAN's ROM after awhile it will get some satellites but not get a full lock.
I will see what sort of fix can be made for this ....
Same thing as of last couple days
Mine eventually started working after opening gps viewer from system tools and cold starting.... what a pain! also iGuidance did not pick up the GPS as before

Same here. My GPS was working on my Touch (NFSFAN) and Blackberry in St. John's, NL (Aliant), but I travelled to Ottawa on Monday and the GPS is not working on either device now.
In Quebec, takes longer to get a connection but still gets one...
just for reference, gps lock using vin's 23506 on a Bell touch works fine - less than 10 seconds.
I do wish nfsans would release a new rom for the vogue tho
looks like the agps servers are up again, getting good locks now

gps probs

Hi all,
Im new to the g1 and am having a problem.
I cant get my gps to locate any satellites, I am using a rooted and unlocked g1 with no data plan and just want to use gps and not agps. I know there are satellites around as I can find them with my other cell (lg incite using just the gps and not agps). I thought it might be the rom so I flashed 3 different ones with no luck on either and Ive been searching the net and on here but cant really find any help. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks in advance
It has taken up to 10 minutes for my phone to find satellites without the data connection to assist. How long did you wait for connection?

Ive tried 3 different ones with no luck. Allthough I did use google sky maps but I dont know if that was using the gps or not.

What ROM are you runnning? Radio? Rooted? Can you capture a logcat (alogcat from the market makes log capturing easy)?

Its rooted and running 2.1 but Ive flashed 4 different roms from 1.5 to 2.1 and none of them can pick up the gps signal. I will try the alogcat and post back.
I am having this problem too. Without data the G1 seems useless for GPS. Rarely it would get GPS lock. I had to put back on data and now gps lock is quick and reliable.

[Q] Spica GPS problems

Hi all,
I am trying to find out how widespread the GPS locking problems are with this model. I am talking about non-assisted GPS, which can be tested using the "GPS Test" application on the market.
So, how is the GPS on your phone performing using GPS Test? Please give some detailed information like lock time, number of sattelites, urban/countryside location, and if possible firmware version of your phone.
---
My Spica cannot get a lock at all, will see up to 11 satellites but most of them with signal strength bars at zero. Firmware versions tested (all same result)
1.5 (XEJB2)
2.1 (XXJD1, XXJD4, XXJF2, XXJC3)
Same pb with my wife's spica. Samdroid version with FE7.
Can't lock withour assistance. What a pitty.
Go to your Settings -> Date & Time -> Uncheck Automatic and see if it helps
Or you can try this (need root)

i just don't bother with that any more...I might do it again after a month without wiping any data
rooting is like breathing to me ... as it would be to most of the people here
Anyone found a solution yet?
My spica wont connect via gps either. It just keeps blinking and nothing happens...not even after 30min.
I've tried GPStest and it reports that 12 satellites are in view but non in use, and there is no bars everything is at 0...not picking any signal at all :S
I tried my friend's one too and he gets a signal imediatley and a lock after about 10-30seconds.
Any solution to this? Is it a software problem or hardware problem?

I installed the alpha CyanogenMod 2.2 and GPS is working like a charm!
Problem was with the wrong libraries being used in many of the custom roms found at SamdroidMod. Devs found out about this issue and fixed it in this 2.2 release.
I'm running original firmwire which i got on the phone. (XXJE4)
I'm not willing to install alpha cyanogen of froyo yet...Is there really no other solution? I've had a chance to compare my spica to another one with original firmwire (JE4 too) ant that other spica worked while my gps had no lock. Also i had the chance to try one with samdroid on and it worked too.
Mine works from time to time. at the moment it works, earlier today it wouldn't get a lock no matter how long i waited.
First thing-delete /data/xtra.bin- this is data for agps which seems to cause gps locking problem. You can do it with RootExplorer/SUFBS or any file manager with root rights. Or use GPS Status and Reset agps data from setting. You can also try to swap libsec-ril.so, JF2 version works best for me. If you want I can provide update packages for libsec-ril.so
i have installed cyanogenmod 7.1 on mine, and can get a lock under 1min30s outside or under 3min in the bus near the window.
I have a rooted spica with android version: 2.2.2, baseband version: i570EXXJC1, kernel version:2.6.29 and Mod version:SamdroidMod-2.2.2-a9.
When I go to google maps app and click set location I always get an error saying: location temporary unavailable ! I checked the option on Settings->Location and security->Use wireless networks and use GPS satellites. And my phone is connected to the internet.
I just bought the phone last week, and its really embarrassing not getting this to work.

desire hd gps signal strenght

hi guys, i just dont know why my DHD gps signal is so weak. today i've been driving for 30 km and it could not connect to the satelites, all the way down it was "searching for gps". when i stop the car sometimes it finds the gps signal, but when i starting to drive, the signal drops down again. same problem with locations and google navigation. any ideas folks ?
Could be anything really, there are a lot of factors. If you're riding a hayabusa, it might not be able to keep up......!
Try a factory reset and see if it helps. I personally haven't had any issues.

ok, i'll try this. no, i'm using this in the car lol

what where the weather conditions? do you have heating in your front window? latest updates as to the locations of satellites? A-GPS option off?
any experience with other GPS devices in the car?
Just did a factory restore. Still can't get gps signal to work.
Before the DHD I had a HTC desire and it had a perfect gps signal. Now I place my dhd in the same place and its just showing "searching for gps" all the time. Sometimes he catch up the signal, but it drops down very soon. Maybe there is any solutions how to fix it. Please help me people

Did you get any answer from HTC? I have also problems with the GPS-signals on my DHD. Have you checked your gps.conf file in the \etc\ directory?
My gps.conf file contains a NTP server line and it says North-America.pool.ntp.org. I think that this is what causes the slow GPS fix.
Your'e from Irland and I'm from Norway and be both should use the european NTP server. Anyone else may know something about this?
I have the same frustrating problem, just bought my DHD full of expectation here in Dubai. I bought it new at Dubai Airport Duty free and it came with same problem, very poor (nearly zero) GPS reception. It also comes with NTP_Server file north america.pool
But I really believe there is something wrong with the hardware because when I contacted HTC and shortly explained the problem with the GPS reception they immediately ask me to return the product to the HTC technical center here for repair/replacement if necessary (mine is still under warranty). The fact that they so quickly advised me to return the device made me think this is a known problem for them but since their office is so far from my house I am still relutant to take my phone there (this is a nightmare for a brand new phone of 700 USD) I tried everything I could, factory reset, different rom's, all possible apps in the world!, anything you imagine including laying the phone on my backyard overnight with full 360g sky view + data and Wi-Fi connected but no success at all, just 3 or 4 sats on view with poor reception. My HD2 with WM6.5 and Android can fix signal using same apps in 5 sec. inside my room!!! my DHD takes hours for a very weak signal and it drops like anything. I will take my phone to service center this week, can't wait anymore for a web solution...what a hassle...
Just finished Twitter chat with a mate of mine who could NOT pick a GPS signal on his DHD.

Download GPS Status from the Market. There's an option there to clear the A-GPS state and download new data from the mobile network!
Try that before sending it back. My DHD took ages to get a fix when I first got it, but now it fixes in seconds once the A-GPS state has been updated.
I've had this problem with different gps devices in the past and my dhd as well. You just have to leave it exposed to the sky for long enough to acquire current satelite locations. Preferably stationary otherwise it won't. Another way is to update the list over the internet with gps status or similar. No hardware problem tho.
Well.....as I said before....I tried GPS Test, GPS Status and many others. I have downloaded A-GPS quick fix info from the web, I have left the device exposed to open sky overnight and stationary, etc, etc, etc. No way to get a good signal, it always drop with any movement on the phone. I took my DHD this morning to the service center and a lady, supposedly technician tried to convince me for an hour that I have to leave 3G + Wi-Fi connected in order to use GPS. How comes the technical representative of HTC here in Dubai can be so stupid in telling me such rubbish.... anyways I was so pissed to see that she knew nothing about the phone neither GPS.... ok...story short.. I finally talked to her boss who very luckly had a DHD too. I took this guy outside the shop and showed him my DHD was searching for GPS signal forever and I did the same procedure in his phone in front of both of them. His DHD fixed signal in 5 sec. using Navi Premium, mine was still searching, ing, ing... The same guy called some other " HTC regional office" and someone told him that the version 1.32.405.6 (which is the one on my DHD) needs a ROM update because of language problems and very known problem with poor GPS reception however this ROM will be available only btw Feb/Mar. I was happy on one side to know that they acknowledged the problem, on the other hand we all have to wait 2 month for using the GPS. Whether this ROM in fact will solve the problem or not, this even they don't know, for now, useless GPS on my DHD and let's keep waiting. I am a bit skeptical about this ROM update since I have tried many different ROMs Stock and Custom even some of them with gps.conf europe.pool but no success, off course I didn't tell this to them otherwise I would void my warranty. My last chance is these new ROM release otherwise they will replace my GPS antenna or main board as far as they told me.
I'd regard it as hardware problem.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I am 99% convinced it's hardware problem too but before they mess up with my device trying to replace GPS antenna I will give it a last try with this new ROM release. I know very well how these people work here in Dubai and the last thing I want is people oppening my DHD and soldering components etc. I d rather accept one factory refurbished than fixing mine with those unskilled people. I hope they at least change the whole thing inside instead of replacing micro components.
I found this?
It´s actually for the nexus one with the CyanogenMod 6 (http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/09/09/gps-fix-for-cyanogenmod-6-on-the-nexus-one/)...
Can someone try it and tell me if it work? I have the same problem but as I´am a new user of android , I´m a little bit affraid to do this...
* Take your SIM out of the Nexus One
* Power on the device
* Turn WiFi on
* Turn GPS on
* Open application: GPS Status
* Go into its Settings menu
* Click on GPS and Sensors
* Click Manage A-GPS state
* Click Reset
* Click Manage A-GPS state again
* Click Download
* Now put your phone on a stable, straight surface in order to enable the phone to get a lock. This time, you’ll see your phone get the lock back way faster than before.
With that done, now it’s time to put your SIM back in and use the network to secure a quick GPS fix as well.
