NEED HELP. Kies update fail! - Galaxy S II General

Was updating my standard, stock UK T-Mobile GS2 through Kies, following it exactly.
It was downloading and then it said when it began updating, that the connection has been lost (with the phone)
It was from PDA:KE3 / PHONE:KF1 / CSC:KE3 to PDA:KE3 / PHONE:KF1 / CSC:KF1.
It then came up with the prompt to disconnect the cable, then battery, then replace battery and turn on and then try again. BUT should I do this?
BECAUSE my GS2 has the Android robot and says "Downloading" "Do not turn off target!!" on it?
It's been doing this for the past 30 minutes or so.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

well if you mess up your phone following kies' instructions you will still be under warranty if you have not rooted your phone

Eugh...warrenty. so much effort. never made a complete backup of all my apps and stuff.
I have slow internet...so I'm going to leave it till like 12, even though that might actually cause screen burn. then i'll turn it off and on again. :/

if you used kies it will have made the backup just before updating

it doesn't do apps and all of that does it?

no but google does, so if you do a full wipe and re-register your phone with google it will start downloading all your market apps again automatically, you can check your apps in your market account
https://market.android.com/

Happened to me one i unplugged it before i knew the risks.
Ignorance is bliss.
Nothing happened all was fine.
Id suggest using odin, its faster.

Its just in download mode? Try to hold down the power-button for a while until it turns off. Unless your PC is still doing something the download mode does nothing

yup that's the way to win an argument, only see all the evidence in favor of your argument whilst ignoring the evidence to the contrary.
KIES is fine for most people and the OP should just use KIES to try and solve his problems first at least he will still be under warranty unlike a wrong odin flash

sorry for hijacking this thread,
does flashing using odin void the warranty? my device was shipped with a german DBT rom and due to the fact that there is no ke7 dbt rom on this forum, i used odin to flash ke7 xeu. does that affect my warranty? i used the jig to get into download mode, as i am too stupid to access it through the buttons (although bootloader mode on winmo always worked for me, it isn't the fingers then ). my device is not rooted, nor has it ever had anything else than a stock rom on it and i never had the yellow triangle.
again, sorry for hijacking, i realize that this is a serious issue, but while we are on the topic of kies vs. odin, losing the warranty would be a clear pro for kies.

I think that so long as you flash official software, the warranty is fine. Its once you root/flash custom roms that the warranty may be affected.

You don't totally rule out warranty, it just becomes samsungs discretion they look at the flash counter, which you can incidentally reset using a USB jig

There are millions of people who succesfully use KIES to update their phones, a very small fraction have problems and come here, a tiny amount of people use ODIN to upgrade their phone, it does not take very long to find threads from people who have messed up their phone using ODIN. It's like advising a little kid who has cut his finger with kiddy scissors to use real scissors instead.

I don't discredit your post whatsoever, I understand your logic, but I have never heard of someone messing their phone up who read instructions and flashed properly using Odin. People that flash kies normally, have a chance of messing their phone up, even though statistically small. Knowing that the benifits of Odin still outweigh kies, and that's from an experienced standpoint. Also backed up by giants in the field like pulsar and intratech, but your opinion is respected, I just don't choose to follow it, would rather follow advice from experience and developers always pal

Download Mode on Nexus S

Hi ,
I turn on Download mode on my Nexus S .
Odin detected my phone , but I haven't Firmware to upload..
Maybe this method will be help to fast root Nexus S in future ?
The nexus s is already rooted.
And there is no reason to use this ever. (just install the rom through recovery)
unless I am missing something????
My objective when I bought the Nexus and sold my Galaxy S was to remove Odin/Kies from my life
I would like to never hear again these words
Ok , but in my opinion root as Odin is simply I look for Firmware with Polish language , but probably does not exist. In SGS I upload Firmware as Odin and I have Polish language. Now I have Nexus S from USA and it hasn't Polish.
You're not going to get a download mode on this device. I appreciate your dilemma, but 99.9% of us are overjoyed we don't have to deal with that methodology. The less Samsung this phone feels the better.
I would post in the Google forums and see if you can get a Google employee/dev to address your request.
Wrong forum.
Odin is really not that bad. Its a really easy way getting back to stock and makes the device practically not brickable.

The Nexus S is "practically not brickable" as well. Flash a new image via fastboot.
Fastboot just as easy to use as Odin, and in fact easier, since it can be used on any platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) and doesn't require Windows-based buggy software and drivers to talk to the phone.
As a Mac owner, I for one am glad to have no need for Odin any more...
To the original poster looking for Polish...the Nexus S is setup totally different than the SGS line of phones. You're not going to be able to push some currently available SGS Polish enabled ROM to the NS and get it to work.
LOL,
Really dude? Odin is pointless, and certainly isn't simple when you compare it with the mere 5-6 lines of terminal commands required to root your Nexus S. Not to mention there's already a 1-click rooting tool out, so unless ODIN can get you a zero-click root, this is just useless.

There's another thread about this right in this forum...it ends with a post from a guy with only one post on xda that says yes, you can get into DL mode. No one asked for more details there...
I tried a couple of known 3-button combos from other devices, and even a "su reboot download" from the terminal. None of them got me into DLM.
I use connector with resistor 301K to turn on Download Mode.

thanks!
yay! my old 301k is compatible
i had a hunch it had to be it
after all the SNS is part of the Galaxy S family
Odin detect 4 ports when you connect SNS.
Is possible move one file (Polish language pack) from SGS to Nexus S ?
I agree with everyone who dislikes Odin. It's almost a surefire way to brick your damn phone because the app is so unstable! I'm no n00b, but I bricked my Vibrant...twice. Never had an issue via fastboot with my N1 or NS. It's so easy, fast, cross-platform...it's darn near perfect.
Coming from vibrant and plenty of expirience ...Its impossible to brick with Odin and Odin is a no brainer easy to use and very quick to use to flash. But IMO no need for it on NS

Kies mini "Unregistered device". Please help

I am running stock but rooted. When I connect to Kies the "Phone Upgrade" button is unavailable and I get:
Firmware version: Unregistered device
I have registered the phone on the Samsung website.
Do I need to unroot before applying the upgrade?
I dont know what it's going on with kies. I have a complete stock phone. No rooting out nothing and tge mIni kies and regular said unregistered device when I plug it in

I am sorry but I don't play with this stuff on a daily basis. I rooted the phone strictly to use the tether application but that's as far as I have gone.
I don't know what "un rooted jvd" means. Can you help a n00b out?
EDIT: For the record I searched for a thread about this particular topic and one doesn't exist. The only reference I have found about this problem was buried deep in another thread that didn't relate to this issue. If the goal for deleting threads is to have one massive thread that contains an insane amount of issues then this thread will likely be deleted. :-/
"Unregistered" may refer to the IMEI for your phone not being registered with Samsung's website. Register there and then try upgrading again. Rooting of any kind shouldn't be necessary.

Actually I asked GalaxySsupport on twitter and they responded that it could be over capacity with as many people hitting it right now.
I was getting unregistered device on JI6, when I Odin back to JFD and then kies upgraded me to KA6
I just plugged it back up (without changing anything) and it is allowing me to upgrade now. I guess the servers were just too busy.
Two questions.
Will updating from a rooted phone lose root? If so, will current rooting methods restore root?
Thanks...
When i plug my phone in with Mini Kies, it doesnt do anything. It says"please connect mobile phone" but when i do, nothing happens. It still says to plug in phone.
Anybody else get that? I am also registered on Samsungs site.
make sure you have samsung drivers for your phone installed on your pc http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929&highlight=samsung+drivers
There's supposedly an issue with the program and Windows 7 64-bit, so that might be it... I'm not 100% sure that's an issue, but others are saying it is.
Then there's the fact that Kies is a buggy POS application. Kies mini is slightly better, but not by much

I think its time to create an official warning about upgrading using Kies

Over the past week I have helped 3 people that have had there phones messed up by the updating process of Kies. Thankfully they was all recoverable, but I actually think it won't be long before we see bricks using this software;+( So be careful guys, use Odin whenever you can

Well its been kicking phones out mid flash, if this happens while flashing the radio segment, its a dead phone:/
If you check intratechs thread in the dev section it will show you a better and safer method through Odin. Plus you will have the advantages of getting roms earlier sometimes

If the radio has been partially flashed and stopped mid flash i think that corrupts the baseband with no return. I remember that the only real way to brick a Nexus was to stop the flash process while the baseband was being wrote to.
And yes samsung would be obliged to give you a new phone or repair the damage caused if Kies is the culprit
Yeh kies is not very good, I've had many time outs.
If you are worried about flashing via odin don't be you can get official Rom to flash via odin.
They are Roms that Samsung has releases .
Read the simple instructions and flash via odin, once you do it one you will see how easy it is

I can't help but wondering how on earth someone manages to mess up a Kies update?
Unless they are running some custom rom/kernel...or somehow have a running process that interferes with kies during the update.
I have never had a problem updating through kies from official firmware.
So I am a bit puzzled when I hear this...
Yes, thanks a lot for creating this thread. Kies has been suffering in the firmware upgrade issue for a long time now. It is time for solving the issue with sincere urgency.
SHAME ON SAMSUNG.
Regards.
Yeah u r right,,,kies dont even work anymore,,,whenever i try to update,it just download the firmware and just before the flashing process a message pop up saying "FirmwareUpdate has been stopped",,,its damn irritating,,,i guess it doesnt work on Win 7...
But i wanted to ask something for a while,,,i see some people here are just "obsessed" with flashing firmwares and roms now and then ,,,,i wonder that isnt it a bit tiring to install all those apps again and again,,i mean i know google restores ur apps,,,but what about those which are ummm cracked?? (i kinda have alot of cracked games i bought only a few)...
Atleast with a Kies update all ur apps remain secure...

Kies from day one has been unreliable for a number of reasons mostly not user problems .
For starters its driver setup and use has always been poor .
Its connection setup is not robust likewise its failure to recover from broken downloads .
Kies in a nutshell does not recover from errors and is error prone even for the most advanced users .

It's just a matter of bad luck. It can happen, and maybe it'll happen to you one day. You can't always blame this on the user. Like for example, there's a power blackout in the middle of a flash and your computer suddenly turns off. Nothing you can do about it, yet you're screwed.
Kies is like that, it's a not a completely safe piece of sofware. Even flashing the bios on a computer isn't. Thing is, Odin allows you to flash official firmwares and is generally safer. There's no real reason to prefer Kies over Odin.
on your phone, go Setting:
About phone --> Software update -->Check for update
that got my phone updated to KF4(1st try).. tired with kies but no luck(2-3 hrs+ many dl errors)

The "pinned" threads in the general and Q&A sections are a good place to start. Also make sure to read any threads about MF3. Good luck.

Did you buy the phone in this condition? Because I can't imagine how any thought process would allow someone to do ANYTHING to a phone if they didn't at least (and I mean at the very least) know what firmware the phone was running. And actually, much more than that needs to be learned before the phone is ever touched.
So you bought it from someone like that?

Try manually putting the phone into ODIN (download) mode and then manually cancel out of it (volume down button...I think). and see if it boots up. There is also a thread in the general section about "a fix for KIES", you might want to check it out. Also, apparently Best Buys stores can reflash MF3 phones if you ask them nicely. All of this might help if you were on MF3.
If you were not on MF3, try to ODIN back to stock. Only do this with MDB or MDL firmware.
Good luck.

I called AT&T and they are going send a warranty replacement, I was completely honest about my situations. After talking to Samsung at Best Buy, He told me it was a software issue and to contact AT&T
Guess what! I pulled this phone back alive! Oh yeah!!!! Stunning! HAPPY! lol Im looking for the link that saved my butt just touch base with everyone!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2404970 This is what saved my goods, so if you know anyone is having the same problem its kind of a loop hole works wonders.
Congrats.

Mine working
Just to let everyone know I flashed to stock firmware MDL and when I rebooted it had a software update which I did without thinking which MF3. I then rooted with know problems and at this point I used goo manger and attempted to install CWM bad idea. Should have read but didn't but I read for a week trying to figure out and try everything I could think of no deal. I saw that people talked about going to best buy so I went to one close to me and system kept showing device not found the person told me he couldn't do anything so I called AT&T who wanted me to travel clear across the city to have it flashed or replaced. Decided that was to much so I went to another best buy and his system said not supported. He called Samsung and they wanted me to send it in or take to there Samsung repair center which was only couple miles away which I did. They had no problem flashing it funny thing they used Odin which they have the files for. I tried to get the guy to give me a copy of the software but he said he couldn't oh well I tried but it does prove that there is Odin files for it just have to wait. I know this is long post just thought that maybe it will help others.

downgrade confirmation

hello guys
I have a sm-n900.....it came upgraded to kitkat in the box
although the performance of the phone is mind blowing but I feel it is a battery draimer......and also I read reviews on net that people with jellybean used to have their battery last more than one day with usual udage but in my case it is only upto 16-17 hrs
I thought of downgrading to jellybean and went to service cemtre where they told me that downgrading in not possible in note 3
I then searched at home and found it is bit complicated and if we do we may loose update to kitkat if we want afterwards
like in my earlier s2 (i9100) and note (n7000) I could flash any firmware anytime
but wat to do downgrade this to jellybean without loosing the possibilities of update to kitkat
plz someone
I know people are here having far big issues compared to mine
but I would be really happy is someone would guide me through this

The reason you are not getting any response is because this question has been asked 59 billion times a day since KK rolled out, and the other million plus members who are aware of it are restraining themselves through giant facepalms.
In short, no, there is no way to downgrade.

I rooted via CF-AutoRoot (as my signature indicates below) and there were no problems. For me, KitKat is working perfectly in every respect.
No, you cannot reset the Knox binary trigger. I could not possibly care any less about it at this point in time.
I plan to use the device until something better comes along, then sell it, so why worry about it?

You need to do some searching on the site. All these questions have answers that have been gone over and over.
Early 4.3 users could root their phone but Knox gets tripped. RDLV method worked then without tripping Knox up till MJ3 of 4.3. Anything above that as stock and Knox gets tripped. KitKat goes one step further in that you cannot revert to 4.3 at all, even if you are willing to trip Knox.
You can root the phone but AFAIK (I haven't bothered with KK - my phone runs brilliantly on v6 (4.3) Omega) you trip Knox anyway you do it.
Knox 0x1 may or may not doom your warranty - somecountries have laws that say Samsung cannot quirm out of hardware problems by claiming software changes. You may or may not care about Knox. Mine is a grey import from HK that I had all kinds of fun getting over to a non-freaky ROM, so when it eventually triggered Knox I didn't give a toss. I did root the phone with RDLV and changed ROMs several times before something that shouldn't have, tripped the Knox bit.
Now there is about as brief a history as you will get. Use what is in it to go search and find any more complete answers.
Always search before asking basic questions - at the least it means you will be able to ask intelligent questions, not ones you can find by looking at the titles of recent posts in Q&A forums.

They'd just boot to Download mode and see the Knox flag.
I don't care about it, honestly. If I ever need warranty assistance, I'd just hope for the best, but since it's Samsung, I'd expect the worst.

plz answer......I know I annoyed a lot.....but plz
You should be able to use another mode. When you connect via USB, swipe down the Notification bar and there should be a Notify there you can tap to choose other modes.
You might need to go into Build Number (Settings/About Phone) and tap 7 times to turn on Developer mode and then turn on USB Debug. (not sure as that's always one of the first things I do)
Unless you are the only person on the planet who sees a need for Knox, you don't need to DL anything to do with Knox. Check in Application Manager and see if you can turn all of it off.

Interesting question. Do you find you can easily sell your rooted/modified phones?
I'm always concerned that people won't want to buy a rooted phone that's potentially been flashed 100+ times with possible excessive CPU over-clocking etc. I always try to put the phone back to stock (or as close as possible) before I sell it on.
Is it just me who feels those concerns?

Well, in my region, the vast majority of buyers don't even know what root is, so it's never been an issue for me. I don't expect that to change anytime soon. The Note 3 doesn't show any issues at all when reflashed unless Knox flag is tripped. Even then, the only "issue" is the warranty bit flag shown in Download mode and the loss of Knox container, which almost nobody uses. Out of a 100 buyers, you might find one that knows what root is and less than that who know how to get to Download mode, and even fewer who'd potentially use Knox, so no, not a problem.
