is there any way to set it so the phone wakes up when a new text is received? I frequently drive with the stereo WAY up and don't hear notifications and my car is highly modified, so it's not smooth enough that I'd feel it on vibrate. My previous phone used to wake up, which was PERFECT, I never missed a message.
I use SMS Popup. It turns on the screen when a SMS is received, and I also can setup different SMS notifications for contact. It's really nice to have different SMS audio alerts per contact.
The messaging app "GOSMS Pro" has that and its free!
Handcent does it as well
OR...
If you're riding around in your highly modified car with the music turned WAY up... Maybe you shouldn't be reading new text messages?
Yes, I'm probably old to you. Maybe I've accumulated a bit more wisdom, too?
+1 on handcent. This app is a life saver! Lol. It'll make ur phone platinum and chrome

Handcent can read your text messages out loud and you can talk to it to message back if needed.
This isn't nearly as direct as the other solutions but MIUI has an option for this built in. If you haven't tried it I recommend giving it a go!

Is there any add on for the Exec that will allow me to have a different notification sound for a Delivery Confirmation text (marked as from System Administrator on Vodafone).
I like to get a confirmation back but I only want a very short sound for it, not the normal notify sound I get with a normal text message!
Any ideas?

Don't know if this will work - but I noticed the other day that you can assign ringtones to specific contacts (I think) - maybe you could set up the SysAdmin as a contact with a short ringtone - I don't know if that would work for texts. (I've not tried it at all).
No, this only works for Ringtones, not Notifications from text messages.
where are all the default sounds for text notifications kept?
Mortring does the job. Search in the google for it. I'm using and an can assigne diferent rings for instance for notifications.

Ive heard of Mortring, but can you tell me if it will allow a ringtone based not on a number but on a named string, as the test I get back for delivery confirmation doesnt have a number associated with it, it has the words "System Administrator" on it, no number at all.
Well i think not, because the one thing the app can do is to apply a ringtone to an unidentified contact, contact with no categories defined, by categories. The same for text messages.
So basically it functions using the number and the string used by the appz is the number.
Here is the topic made by the author of the program and you can ask him.

Greetings,

Thank you for that, im greatful
Thought I'd tag on this thread.
I have just got two phones, on each for me and the good lady. She wants to know if there is a way of it reminding her that she has a text - currently the phone makes a noise once and then unless you open it up to check, you have no idea if you have a text.
Her old phone used to make a tone every few minutes if she had a text.
I can't see any settings in the phone to do this. Are there any apps out there that would fit the bill ?
Any advice greatfully received.

I don't know any apps, but you can go to Start>Settings>Personal> Sound and Notifications>Notifications>New Text Messages and check the "Flash light for NO LIMIT". This will ensure if you receive any text msgs that the indicator light will flash orange if you have any text message and it will only disappear after you dismiss or read it.

Phone Alarm from http://www.pocketmax.net/ will do this, and a lot more besides.
As for my problem, Mortring doesnt seem WM5 compatible - Oh well

but then I thought I'd have a look myself. Looking at the registry, text message notification is in notifications not sounds. Anyone know what the options are in HKCU/ControlPanel/Notifications/*/Options are ?

i finally found a hero rom that works for me but one thing i dislike is that popup sms is very buggy on it. ill get notified a few times for each message. ill get the same notification twice, about 20 mins apart. is there any other app out there that works like popup? i need my screen to "wake up" when i receive an SMS/MMS.
by any chance have you made sure to disable notifications in the sms settings of the device. Also check to make sure you do not have the sms popup setting for reminders enabled. Not using it right now only cause I have been toying with different roms and have been reformatting my sd card with each rom but when I was using it at first with the qtek hero rom I did not have any issues. I am about to flash the evil 1.6 and will test it on that rom and post findings.

Try dgAlert Classic, allows you to set some good sms mms settings including; wake up, led color etc...
yes i did have my notifications set up correctly in both popup sms and the native sms app. i will try this other app and see how it goes. thank you both for the replies.
I have been running on evil's 1.6 hero rom on tmobile mytouch and have had no issues or conflicts with sms popup

does the led color settings work with the hero roms?
ok guys...a little help please. could you please navigate me to sms popup settings? not finding and since there aren't too many places to look, i'm either a doof (likely) or fatal1ty1.4hero has it removed (less likely).
has anyone else gone through this issue yet? i sort of feel like im the only one lol. im currently on modaco 2.2 but popup sms wouldnt work modaco 1.51, a few drizzy roms, and a few jac roms. on modaco it doesnt turn my screen on but when i hit a key the message with pop up notification shows up (but that sort of defeats the purpose of the app). my settings are correct (notifications in native messaging are turned off, notifications turned on in popup sms, message priority setting is on high). i also think i miss a lot of message when i have popup installed.
as a former iphone user this app is huge for me. i normally have to keep my phone on vibrate so its nice to be able to see the screen light up and also have the photo, name, reply button right on the little window. i would be extremely grateful for anyone who could help me set this up on my hero rom!
currently using tmobile mytouch 3g. modaco 2.2 32b hero rom.
SMS Popup v0.9.97 working fine here...
I purchased an evo for both me and my wife. A friend of mine did the same as well. It seemed like a good deal at the time and the phone seems to be good quality overall...
However, when messaging back and forth quickly, messages disappear from the thread and cannot be seen in any way. All that I receive is a notification. This has happened for all of us. Messages are also often received in the wrong order.
Would the situation be any better if I was using plain android instead of the buggy sense UI? It looks like the froyo rom is making good progress.. I'm going to try it, but if it's still as buggy as it is stock, Sprint will be getting 4 EVOs returned.
Try another messaging app like handcent or chomp. You have choices.
No problems here, and I'm on my 2nd Android phone. Both have worked great with no problems such as yours.
Seems like more of a rant then a request for help. that being said, my family has 5 Evo's between us and we have had not one complaint with the SMS. possibly sprint service in the area? i know when i'm in smaller towns the sms seems to lag, almost like its stuck in queue somewhere before being sent to me.
good luck mate!
Use Handcent. Problem solved. The stock app is slow and sucks.
If you hate it, go back to the iPhone where you obviously came from?
Now to try to find a question to answer within all that complaining....... hmmm... oh yes, I'm having issues with the SMS coming in odd orders occasionally. I did not ever experience this with my Hero.
So what I can derive from that is that this particular release of Sense, which is NOT Android, has a bug. You need to differentiate between the OS and the VERY deep reaching Sense UI that HTC puts on top.
I'd tell you to wait for the ROM development to pick up, but something tells me you're not a tinkerer. The iPhone is a fantastic phone.. you just can't tinker as much as you can with Android. So with Android you'll have choices but you'll have bugs. It's just something I come to expect.
It's like running Linux. Sure it's trendy to hate Microsoft, but holy hell there are a lot of problems with Linux apps in design, UI, and in general stability (Note, I didn't say Linux has problems.. I said apps. Because it's the crap on top of the underlying system I have complaints with). I still love it, I just have to approach it with an attitude that it's not going to be as polished as OS X, and it's not going to be as stable either.
Welcome to Open Source and the stuff people put out with it.
After hearing everyone praise handcent I decided to give it a try myself and wow is it better. Choice is very nice
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
Edited to remove ranting, I'll give handcent a shot. Hopefully it doesn't lose random messages =(.
I've gotten some messages out of order, but that's about it.
If I try Handcent and somehow don't like it, is it easy to revert back to the original built-in messaging app?

Nevermind I realize it's an independent app. I just replaced my Messaging icon with the Handcent one on the homescreen.
BTW, anyone using handcent have a problem sending MMS?

Just make sure you disable notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. That's annoying.
Also, I haven't had any problems with MMS while using Handcent.

Thanks, I totally noticed that too. But it looks like if I disable notifications in the notification bar then it doesn't let me make sure it plays a sound.
Does handcent control that on its own so it doesn't matter if the sound is disabled on the stock messaging app?

Yea I have that problem alot I usually use built in messaging for MMS and handcent for all other SMS. I never have a problem receiving MMS with handcent just sending.
I prefer chomp, and have had no issues. well maybe one, or two texts out of order. Like if the sender typed a "two page" text and sent, then sent a short text the short one might come in before the second half of the "two page" text.

I ran some tests and I can send over 3g it's only when wifi is enabled. So I did some research and found out sprint only sends MMS over their connections. The default messaging app will bypass wifi and use 3g to send mms. Handcent had patched this for the Hero.
I'd like to put in a plug for ChompSMS. I hadn't used it before, but people were saying that it automatically resizes your pictures when sending MMS. Maybe this isn't a problem on the Evo, but it was on the Hero. I will occasionally get a text out of order if someone sends me a long one that is broken up into more than 2 messages. But, I really like it's interface better than Handcent, which I have also used. As far as I know, I have never had a text go missing when using Chomp.
Android is all about choice. It's really nice to have all these choices and these are FREE (as in beer).
I know i'm over looking something very simple. I see an option to disable vibrate for calls, but do not see anything for notifications.
TIA gents.
i didnt see it either.
I think they are in the individual apps. Like for SMS, there is a vibrate notification option in the settings of the SMS app itself.

Cool. I searched for hours trying to find out how to do that, lol. I guess that what happens when you're coming from WinMo.
Because it is clearly too much to expect google to make it as easy as windows or an iphone.
For this, and also for alarms, for selecting text, for clicking on phone numbers and urls (not all of which work) in email and calendar entries, etc.
I would be very surprised if froyo fixes any of this.
Maybe the googlies made too much money on the stock that they simply don't care because they already own iphones.
end of rant.
My Evo Shift frequently does not make a noise or vibrate when I receive texts.
I checked the settings, and even send test texts from other phones.
Sometimes it rings/vinbrates, sometimes it doesn't.
Anyone else experiencing the same issues?
Is there a fix?
Thanks.
FYI: I did a search of titles under "texts" and "notifications" and got zero results.
Odd question: did you choose to do the GVoice integration with your account? I noticed when I did the integration that text messages were interrupted by Google Voice and not sent directly to my phone. I fixed it by checking a box that said send text to the phone or something along those lines in my GVoice settings. I only found out that was happening because I had their app on my phone still. Otherwise I would not have received any notification either.

Thanks for the repsonse.
No, I did not set up Gvoice Integration.
I've noticed that sometimes if I have the messaging app open when I lock my phone it won't notify me. pretty annoying. Not sure if it's the same problem on your end but mine has done it on every Sense ROM I've tried. I haven't ran any AOSP long enough to notice if they do it as well.
My wife has been complaining of this lately. Myself I haven't had it happen to me, but I use Handcent.
I have the same problem. I have GV installed, and do not get any sound/vibrate when receiving texts. This is a also a problem with voicemails, as i get a text saying to call a number. When i call it tells me to setup my voicemail (its already setup). If i dial 1 from dialer, it goes to voicemail per usual. Is GV causing these problems? - thanks - Viperspike
Wow. I don't even get voicemails. I switched to PF something that is a visual voicemail because my wife was pissed as hell I "ignored" 3 calls. They never even showed up until i called the voicemail number. Same issue with texts.... Anyone have any ideas?

Try using handcent or upgrade to GB 2.3.4 the messaging app in 2.3.4 is a lot better especially with notifications.
