root explorer - Acer Iconia A500

Will file manager HD do the same as root explorer? Still learning this system. Thanks

I have both on my A500, and while File Manager HD is awesome for searching for files and general moving/shuffling of things, it has no root option, so you can't change permissions on files if you want to. I have Root Explorer strictly for that reason. If you aren't rooted, then I'd just go with File Manager HD, its got a bit better UI and looks pretty classy and will do anything you would need it to do. But if you are rooted, or are planning to root your tablet, get Root Explorer for that.
As a personal choice, I mostly use ES File Explorer, it has a root option and is almost as nice to look at FM HD.
Hope that helps.

+1 ES file explorer, looks good, tablet optimized... kinda... and root support!!!, it's free goddam!!!

+1 on ES as well. I use my desktop as a file server for my Tab
MK

I use File Expert, which is free, has root access and also supports transfer of files to and from the tablet via wifi and over the internet. I have Root Explorer on my phone and I transfered it to the Iconia, and there has been a time where it was more convenient to use than File Expert, but in general, I am very satisfied with it. Plus, it's free.

Just a thanks
Thanks to all that posted. I have been really tacked out getting this tab the way I want. (Nub). Good thing got laid off last week, now have much time to play.

The underlying protocol is called SMB. So yes, it is Linux, Windows, OSX and several other OSes.

Understood. So perhaps it could connect then. I'll try it out.
You can connect and copy it over, but I haven't found a way to stream video from my NAS yet.
I would love to turn this into a XBMC-style media hub.

It'd be nice. Honestly we need a VLC app conscious of Windows shares.
Es file manager file manager hlhd works well for me. Also can access direct to my windows web hosting server as mapped drive.but only works within that app.wish it was built into long click menues. But we don't get everything we want
Someone could provided write something for this as if you install say Facebook at it added a share likpnk in long click lenient of other photo and sharing
If you are rooted and install any of the kernel available in the forum then you can use cifs app in the market to map windows shares.

I'm using ES File Explorer (pre and post root) and I'm able to access a networked windows share (Win7) with my video files. When I select a video file, a dialog box appears asking me which player to use. I use Rock Player Lite and after about 15s, my video starts!
Also, this works remotely using VPN (DD-WRT!!!)

You seem to already be rooted according to your sig. So now, backup all your apps and settings with titanium backup, and put the Honeyvillain ROM on your tab. Full wipe. Restore your apps etc. The reason for the ROM is that it already has the Cifs module integrated right into it, making it so you dont have to add it yourself. And it is an awesome Rom that is 3.1 and works great.
Now, go to the market and DL the free app calls Cifs Manager. In it you set your network shares just like in windows. You just have to run the app once (and after any reboot) and it mounts your pre set shares as if they were right on your tab. Then you can use ES File explorer to browse to them. /mnt/cifs/your shares. Clicking aything will allow access as if it was on your device.
I stream videos with no lag or delay this way. It works perfectly. And if you set Moboplayer as your default video player you can play pretty much any file without issues (at least I have so far).
Good luck!
AndSMB seems to work fine

Looks nice, I personally like File Manager HD for casual browsing/file exploring, very easy to use and allows you to bookmark folders into a side panel for quick access.
Still need Root Explorer for the more powerful options, however.

How do i acess folders on the Nexus 7

I can't seem to find where you look at folders on the Nexus 7, am I missing something? On my galaxy S2 I can open up and go into all the folders available on my phone but I cant see the icon to do this on the Nexus 7?
you can get a file explorer app from the play store for free. astro file manager and ES file explorer are two good ones

Google has said that they don't want to create an OS that requires the user to need a file explorer.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Lack of file manager has been a trend in general; I don't think you can even get one on Windows Phone unless you unlock.
Solid Explorer
At first I thought I was just missing something when I couldn't find the explorer. It became essential when some videos I bought over didn't show up in the download folder, so I installed AntTek Explorer. Seriously, ANYTHING would have been better than nothing. I understand not always needing it, but it's good to have the option. At least we can download one easily enough, so it's fine.
Nexus7 2012 Help pls
I've used Motorola for the past 2 years and am able to connect via USN to my Win7/64 bit system with ABSOLUTE EASE.
I am dumbfounded because I am NOT able to view NEXUS files/directories on my PC.'
When I connect the USB- I only see DCIM and Camera. (If I selected Camera MTP).
If I selected media Device which is the default, I see nothing in PC File Manager.
This is very disappointing because I'd really like to see files on the PC, because typing and moving and renaming is so much easier.
Yes, I know I can see files using Android File explorer, etc.
I am preparing to root my phone, as I did the Razr, and wanted to back up files using Helium (old Carbon), until I get it rooted and can use my paid for Titanium Pro.' --- So, where the devil will the backups be stored? Going back and forth between tablet and PC is odd to say the least.
I thought Nexus was the bomb for allowing users to totally manage their devices. Guess u have to have tiny fingers, great eyes, and LOTS OF Patience!
Any help or comments is very much appreciated.

[Q] How to share a Nexus Player directory?

Hi,
any idea how to setup a Samba share on a NP without root?
I tried WEBDAV Server (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.webdavserver), but it fails to start.
Any other idea?
I'ld like to be able to copy files (Kodi stuff) from my Windows PC to my NP to sync settings/addons.
thx
Sorry, can't help you but I've also always wondered how to "share" a directory in a Android Device. Would be of great benefit for my Tablet and Phone, etc... to transfer files over a local LAN. Keeping an eye on this one to see if anyone has an answer.

thanks for that. Just installed it on my Nexus6 and can't get the service to "Start" however. Once I figure what the heck is wrong, this will probably be exactly what I'm looking for!
After getting tired of opening ES File Explorer and enabling FTP access everytime, I started using 'SSH Server' (available on Play Store), which loads on boot (after you tick the right boxes to do so) so I can access my Nexus Player storage via SFTP from my Openelec box and my MacBook. I'm sure there are other options, but this one's enough for what I need.

It needs root AND SEL set to "permissive" on Marshmallow. That's why I can't get it to work. I had it working on an old tablet (because there is no way I'm setting SEL mode to "permissive" anymore) and tried to transfer a file, all sorts of errors and when it did work, it was VERY slow.
So this app, really not useful.

Glad I could help. I myself I'm new at this, just got my Nexus Player last saturday I've been using Android for the past 4 months after a life on iOS. However, I love how this sort of stuff can be done on this OS!
If you have ES File Explorer open on 2 devices on the same LAN you can just send from 1 to the other directly.

That's true, yes. But there is no ES File Explorer for your PC / MAC, so sending files from a PC to a Android device won't work that way. (unless you count installing bluestacks emulator and running ES that way from a PC)

ES FileExplorer slow accessing USB 3.0 USB while Built in File browser fast? Any Fix?

Hey guys when I first got my usb 3.0 OTG cable and plugged it in on the 6p I found copying files was really slow. I even thought the USB OTG cable was defective. It won’t go past 1MB/s from copying in ES file explorer. Trying to copy a TWRP backup and it says 20 minutes. When I plugged in the USB it asked me do you want to let ES File explorer access the USB and I said yes. However, when I use the inbuilt file explorer/browser it is much faster and the whole backup is copied in under a minute. How can I give es file explorer full speed access to the drive? ES is much better than the inbuilt file explorer. Any ideas? I’m running pure Nexus by the way tried the same scenario on it and stock. So I’m willing to look at any rooted solutions.
try a different file manager than ES?
solid explorer is very good, there are also many others.
Solid Explorer does work at full speed.

That’s weird never had that issue with ES but your right solid explorer is working. May have to give up some of the things I use in ES file explorer and purchase solid explorer.

Just a quick question. (as a former ES user) what do you use in ES that you would be 'giving up' as opposed to another file explorer ?
Here is a few of the top of my head

Well i just downloaded solid explorer for the first time but i know es has a lot of network capabilities like Connecting to your LAN and the Android TV and Remote manager feature just to name a few. But since i don't use them every day i can use another file explorer for local things. I'm not sure if Solid explorer also has these features. Also i like the feature where if both devices are running es file explorer you can beam over files instantly with no setup using the share menu. This was really useful for the nexus player i got since no native file browser.
